Managing Concerns About Falls Have you ever turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on your favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you.

Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result is severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interaction with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent.

A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older participants. Participants learn to set realistic goals, to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

The Manchester Health is offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls. This 8 week program starts on Thursday October 1, 2015 at the Manchester Senior Center located at 549 East Middle Turnpike from 10:00 to 12:00. A workbook and healthy refreshments are provided. You must register by calling the Manchester Heath Department at (860) 647- 3173 as space is limited. Hartford Hospital Mobile Mammography Van The Town of Manchester Health Department will be hosting “Take the Time” Digital Mobile Mammography Van sponsored by Hartford Hospital’s Partnership for Breast Care on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at North Main Street across from the Community Y for employees and the public.

With digital mammography, the images are recorded directly into a computer. The image can then be viewed on a computer screen and specific areas can be enlarged or highlighted. If there is a suspicious area, your doctors can use the computer to take a closer look. The images also can be transmitted electronically from one location to another and are available upon request from the patient. Report will be mailed to your primary care M.D.

Make a Difference to a Child in Just One Hour Per Week!

RSVP Volunteers in Vernon and Manchester help youngsters learn to read

The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program is looking for volunteers age 55+ to spend one hour per week helping an elementary school child become a better reader. Invest your time to help a child succeed in school! Call Theresa Strong, RSVP Manager of the Community Renewal Team, (860) 760-3088 or email [email protected]. You can help a child succeed in school by donating just one hour per week! The Community Renewal Team’s Retired & Senior Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers age 55+ to serve in our signature program, RSVP READS, for the 2015-16 school year. RSVP READS pairs the volunteers with elementary school students for an hour of reading support. Volunteers make reading interesting and fun, act as positive role models and inspire their students to read. This year, the program will operate in seven Manchester and five Vernon schools, from October-May. Training is provided, and many friendships are formed among the volunteers. Choose your preferred days, hours and locations – we can even accommodate travel plans! Some people choose to serve only as substitutes, filling in as needed. RSVP READS tutors truly make a difference in the lives of their students. So, why not choose to volunteer today and share your love of reading with the children in your community? Please contact Theresa Strong, RSVP Manager of the Community Renewal Team. Call - (860) 760-3088 or Email: [email protected]
