NSFAS facing crisisNational Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) launched a fundraising initiative called the NSFAS Fund-a-thon, in partnership with the SABC Foundation and Vodacom Foundation at the University of Fort Hare last week.

NSFAS has been facing financial difficulties for quite a while now, in the past few years the financial aid scheme has been marred by a number of student’s protests due to the shortage of funds.

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Honourable Mduduzi Manana made a strong appeal to citizens to enthusiastically contribute towards the initiative as it is aimed at helping South African students who cannot afford to pay for

college and university fees. “The principle of

cost sharing in higher education is an important one in South Africa. The cost of higher education should be shared between public and private interests” he said.

NSFAS Fund-a- thon is a fundraising initiative that is meant to increase funding for academically-able and financially deserving students. By sending a Small Messages Service (SMS) to 49919 and key in the word NSFAS, the general public will be able to donate R30 per sms. Thus, increasing available funding whilst encouraging responsible citizenship amongst all South Africans.

The NSFAS Executive officer, Mr Msulwa Daca made a point that education is not just a government issue but

the private sector and the general public are to play their central roles in providing access to higher education and further education and training. However the Vodacom Chief Officer, Ms Maya Makanjee expressed that education is a societal issue therefore as the Foundation, they are investing in education through their contribution in this initiative.

“It is important that we prioritise education in order to better the lives of south African, it is a task that we are all responsible of” said Ms Makanjee.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare Dr Mvuyo Tom encouraged everyone to form partnerships to transform higher education and training as this will assist students from disadvantaged

backgrounds to have access to higher education.

“Corporates and students must link up and form partnerships that can be mutually beneficial. Student from disadvantaged areas will be able to have easier access to higher education” said Dr Tom.

TOGETHER WE CAN OVERCOME

Remembering Clarence Makwetu

For centuries, family units, communities and individuals have been united by the power of prayer and a sense of higher purpose. This sense of unity and striving for the greater good is universally practiced across all faiths.

The social fabric of societies and has endured even in an ever-changing world. A similar sense of unity and purpose swept through our nation in the momentous months leading up to the first democratic election in 1994, and in the first few years thereafter.

However, as the events of the last few months have shown, much work remains to be done.

Simply put the dawning of democracy did not erase the social injustice of our past, and could only do so much to end the artificial social, racial and cultural divides that were inculcated by the apartheid state.

The year 1994 was only the beginning of our journey and it is now incumbent on this generation to continue building on the legacy of those who sacrificed everything so that we could be free.

It is now in our hands and we need to have serious national conversations about our efforts at social cohesion and nation building. Speaking of what divides us will undoubtedly be uncomfortable and may even open old wounds. But if we ignore it or try to wish away the uncomfortable realities of present-day South Africa we risk division at a time when our nation is crying out for unity.

Our goal as South Africans should be to promote inclusive nation-building and social cohesion. The only way to ensure this is through dialogue. Together we

must deepen community and societal conversations.

Such conversations can begin in our families or in our social circle. They can be led by communities or by faiths. Wherever it starts, we need these conversations to take place.

It is these honest and open discussions that will shine a light on the inequalities, exclusions and disparities that still exist in society. These same discussions must also surface our triumphs where we have risen above the fray and extended a hand of friendship and uplifted our neighbours.

Greater social cohesion is within our collective grasp. It starts with living our Constitution and embracing the enduring spirit of our freedom and democracy as our true north. We need to build on our strong foundations by systematically working towards eradicating divisions and injustices, and together creating a more inclusive society and economy.

We must push for a recognition of shared symbols and values; and promote a countrywide conscious sense of being proudly South African. There are many

more things that unite us then things which divide us.

This was once again reaffirmed during the recent commemoration of Human Rights Month where South Africans paid tribute to those who made sacrifices and put their lives in danger for the sake of freedom and human rights for all. Their sacrifices are a timely reminder that South Africans need to be united on all fronts if we are to foster greater social cohesion fight the scourge of racism.

When we join the conversation in our places of worship, in our schools, our communities and among our friends, we begin to create the building blocks of social cohesion and common understanding.

I urge all South Africans to join the conversation! As former President Nelson Mandela once famously said; it’s in our hands now.

Former Pan Afrikanist Congress of Azania (PAC) leader Clarence Makwetu will be finally laid to rest in Cofimvaba this Saturday after he passed away in a private hospital in Queenstown earlier this month.

Makwetu was 87 at the time of his death. He had been ill for quite a long time.

A memorial service was held in Cofimvaba, earlier this week and The Eastern Cape Legislature said it would afford Makwetu a Special Provincial State Funeral for his stellar service in the struggle against apartheid.

The Premier of the Eastern Cape, Phumulo Masualle lauded Makwetu for his immense role in South Africa's liberation struggle. Speaking during his visit to Makwetu's Gwatyu farm, outside of Cofimvaba, Masualle described the late anti-apartheid veteran as a great leader.

"In this province, we pride ourselves of producing many outstanding leaders. He is one of them, who have made significant contribution in the struggle for liberation” said Premier Masualle.

Family spokesperson, Mazwi Makwetu,

said the family was encouraged by the support they received all over the country and Masualle’s visit.

"He made us to realise the whole country is mourning with us and this has instilled some kind of great strength within our minds and we will deal with the death and work on the burial of my uncle" said Mr Makwetu.

Makwetu was born in 1928 in Cofimvaba. While working in Cape Town in the 1950’s he became an active member of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League. In 1959 he became very instrumental in the formation of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC).

In December 1989 he became the first President of the Pan Africanist Movement (PAM), the front organisation of the PAC. When the PAC was unbanned in 1990, PAM was dissolved and Makwetu became the Deputy President of the PAC. On the death of the PAC president, Zephaniah Mothopeng, in 1990, Makwetu was elected President of the PAC.

He served in this position until 1996. After the 1994 democratic elections, Makwetu led the PAC delegation to the National Assembly.

Makwetu was a political activist for 40 years from 1954 to 1994, when he retired from active politics. A staunch Africanist, Makwetu's role in the struggle for the liberation of South Africa is extraordinary.

Bumpy road for IEC elections

MMM: scam or a scheme?

The final registrations for the Local Government Elections took place last week. MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Fikile Xasa is adamant that the Eastern Cape is ready for the big day on the 3rd of August even though there have been a number of hiccups at some of the voting stations around the province. More than 25 million people have registered to vote according to the IEC.

The MEC Xasa stated that only a few the voting stations in the O.R Tambo District were not operating because of service delivery protests and people had trouble identifying which voting stations

they could register in. “We commend the work of our election

teams including Mayors and Councillors and members of the SAPS. Their interventions facilitated the opening of voting stations that were initially closed due to protests, let us allow officials of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to do their work without fear or intimidation” said MEC Fikile Xasa.

The IEC has also come under great pressure from some sectors like the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and the Democratic Alliance having complained about the final voters roll. Political parties expressed concerns in the administration of the voting process amongst others things. The FF+ says they received

complaints about incorrect addresses, names and addresses disappearing out of the voters roll.

The FF Plus’s leader Pieter Mulder said the confusion was worrying since the elections were four months away.

“It has to be established what exactly the problem is‚ what the extent of the problem is‚ and it has to be rectified as quickly as possible‚” said Mulder.

Democratic Alliance Spokesman on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Kevin Mileham said the uncertainty over the finalisation of the voters’ roll raised concerns over a potential constitutional crisis if voting did not take place within the prescribed time and with the requisite requirements

having been met.Apart from the confusion experienced

at the weekend‚ there were incidents of violence reported at some voting stations in the country.

About 40 out of 22‚617 voting stations were affected. The areas worst affected were Vuwani in the Vhembe District Municipality in Limpopo‚ Paarl and Wellington in the Western Cape.

Minister David van Rooyen condemned the incidents and urged all leaders to take responsibility for the violence and work towards ending it.

The MMM Scheme continues to draw mixed reactions from the South African public despite being under investigation by the SAPS.

Hawks Unit on suspicion of being a pyramid scheme.

MMM is a money-making scheme that promises its participants 30 percent growth per month.

MMM dubs itself a “social financial network” where users register and indicate the amount of money (minimum R100) they are prepared to put into the system. Then you get special

MMM money known as Mavro, which accumulates 30% interest per month. You then get an order from someone (you are given name and details) to transfer money to.

Once that’s done you can sell your Mavro to another MMM user who gets your order and buys Mavro from you, and so it goes on.

The scheme was named after its Russian founders, Sergei Mavrodi, his brother Vyacheslav Mavrodi, and Olga Melnikova with the three Ms standing for their surnames.

It was founded in Russia in 1989, originally importing computers and

office equipment. The company moved over to financial operations later after it was accused of tax evasion and creating its successful ponzi scheme in 1994.The scheme claimed 1000% returns and started an aggressive TV advertising campaign.

In 2007 Sergei Mavrodi was found guilty of defrauding 10,000 investors out of 110 million rubles.

In 2011 Mavrodi was back with a new pyramid scheme, which he described as such. "This is a pyramid," Mavrodi said in his appeal to the nation on his blog.

"It is a naked scheme, nothing more, people interact with each other and give

each other money, for no reason" said Mavrodi.

The scheme arrived I South Africa last year and claimed it could generate a 30% per month return through a "social financial network"

MMM South Africa denies that it is a ponzi scheme, and instead claims that it is more akin to a stokvel.

“There’s nothing illegal about it, this is like a stokvel … If you’ve got spare money to invest, you can get 30% of that money at the end of 31 days,” a Nigerian who runs the scheme’s office.

South Africa fashion week (SAFW) spring/summer 2016/2017 wrapped up last week, rounding off with some great gear in the menswear collections. The designers made it clear that graphic prints are a really big trend as multiple collections sent models down the

runway with bright outfits. Wearing monochromatic head to toe is the way to go for looking sharp as “Touvch” displayed in his show.Design houses like House of Saint Luke and Ephymol brought back short shorts in a range of colours and prints. Particularly great for spring/summer weather.

Short shorts in bright colours like blue, green and yellow for beach days were in abundance as other designers interpreted this trend with more tailored styles in an array of subtle, darker colours for versatility with simple button down shirts.I must say the head wrap made an appearance again and I find it very

interesting that this trend has expanded to the male world beyond the Arabic culture. It is always cool to watch and see how some things such as turbans and wraps trespass their more traditional ambiance to become pure fashion. I guess that’s evolution. [email protected]

4TH STREET There are three wine coolers in the range, white, pink or rose and red somewhat sweet peachy, apricot aromas and flavours on the white and pink- but surprisingly tangy and refreshing with a noticeable fun sparkle. “Like winey grapetiser”, was how one person described it. The red wine was more distinctly berry like on the nose with a notable sweet grape and red wine feel. Overall, the range impressed the team being full of flavour and not too “winey’.

KLIPDRIFT & COLAA hand’s down favourite – even with those who shy away from drinking brandy! The balance of spirit and cola was superbly judged and the most positive aspect the team noted was that the brandy wasn’t as forceful as anticipated. “That’s really, really nice! Yum, yum!”HUNTER’S EXTREME GUARANA

BOLD APPLE ALEIn terms of flavour it’s thumbs up: Zippy and tangy lime and citrus acid tartness but then the apple takes over. “The apple comes through but feels that it could pack more of a punch,” one teamster said.

FIVERThis is from the clever team which gave South Africa the phenomenally successful Four Cousins, the Retief family of Van Loveren in Robertson.

There are five flavours in the wine cooler range, each with a different name.

HOOCH Hooch is a spirit cooler which comes in five flavour variants: Apple, ruby, grapefruit, blackcurrant and strawberry.

SMIRNOFF DOUBLE BLACK ICE GREEN COFFEESPIRIT COOLERThis smells more like bubblegum and sweets than coffee. The cooler is tangy, toned sweetness with good refreshing tang and a distinct dryness. No lingering flavour just clean finish. Again, a well balanced with alcohol integration.

SOUTHERN COMFORT LIME & SODA SPIRIT COOLERThis is an interesting drink which saw a notable split between tasters. It’s a “love it/hate it drink. Those who enjoyed it liked the lime twist, oaky note and distinct Southern Comfort flavour. In the other camp were those who felt it didn’t have enough of that sweet Southern Comfort vibe and that the drink as a whole could have used a bit more concentration.

FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHYThe saying "one picture is worth a thousand words" demonstrates the importance of pictures and the information that they can convey. Written and spoken words are essential for communication, but sometimes, pictures can make a point even more powerfully.

This week we had conversation with East London based photographer and lecturer, Mark Fredericks on the thoughts and momentum behind the art of his work.

“People inspire my photography in terms of their reactions to the images, as well as the socio-political condition of their daily lives. Photography is a social practice, and that is how I approach it. Yes, it can be a rewarding career, but that is not my driving force it used to be, and I discovered that my creativity waned,” says Mark.

Q: How do you get the person, place or thing that is in front of the camera onto the film, chip or paper in just the way you want?

MF: “I spend a lot of time looking at images. I analyse the messages in images, because it is my view that we form our opinions of life through images, and not reality. I always discuss my thoughts with clients or commissioned models, and this seems to work. They understand what I am looking for, and deliver. Trust is an important element.”

Q: Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking and career path?

MF: “Steve McCurry no question. The photograph of the Afghan girl is possibly my most favourite photograph of all time. It is the type of image that a photographer wishes they had captured. I also enjoy the fine art work of James Nachtwey and Helmut Newton. Maxim Vakhoviskiy’s work on ‘Black Venus’ is also amazing.”

Q: Exactly what it is you want to say with your pictures and how do you actually get your photographs to do that?

MF: “It really depends on what I am working on at the

time. I always like to focus on the bigger picture, and I always tell my students that there are events or contributing factors at play ‘outside of the frame’, so I encourage wide-angle photography for events etc. Portraits and intimate subject matter such as families and weddings, require focus on the emotion, so mid to telephoto focal lengths are used. Emotion is in the eyes. I use 50mm to 105mm to really close in on the eyes. Once the eyes are captured, and the models are relaxed, then the emotion flows from the image.”

Q: What technology/software/

camera gear do you use to keep focused on what you do best?

MF: “Over the years I have built up a nice kit. Flashes and lenses, I tend to buy bodies at the low end of the budget scale - because my commercial work has tapered off due to teaching. I splurge on lenses. I would easily sell my camera bodies, and I do try

to upgrade every two to three years, but I hold onto my lenses. These days I make many images with my S6. It is an amazing device, and makes me think of the old photographic adage:

“The best camera in the world is the one that is always with you.”

On my cell phone I use the in-camera settings and the free App ’Snapseed’. I get good results up to A2. At home I flit between light room, Aperture (the best in my view), and Photoshop.”

Q: What motivates you to continue taking pictures economically, politically, intellectually or emotionally?

MF: “I don’t really take photographs for the money. Photography for me is a social skill. Social media has made me aware of the talent out there. East London has some serious photographers, many of them very young, and they will only get better. These youngsters motivate me. A future talent is a student of mine Sisipho Zamxaxa. I think that she has major potential because she loves photography. “Emotionally I am motivated by my sons - Dwayne and Jason.

I taught them the sociology and value of the image form an early age. Both of them are very good photographers, and they are constantly pushing me. When Dwayne visits from abroad, then we go on excursions in the vein of the ’Top Gear’ challenges. The first thing I taught them was to ‘drop the attitude’ - the subject of the photograph is the most important person and not the photographer.

“Politics influences everything I do. Our media focus contradicts the realities of the majority of people in our country. Images are able to openly display this, yet it is neglected, instead township life and the lives of shack dwellers have replaced the ‘human zoos’ of the late 19th century and early 20th century with ’township tours’ being marketed as a tourist option. Crazy stuff.”

Q: How has photography

influenced you as a person?

MF: “As I have grown older, I have started to think about my images a lot more. I have sold a lot of my equipment due to personal circumstances - and I was rather forced into using my Cell phone, and I have discovered that by returning to basics, professional results can be obtained.

Q: What is your favourite photograph that you have ever taken and why?

MF: “This is very difficult to answer, but if I would have to select only one image, it would have to be an image I captured in 1995 in Prieska. I snapped three ladies sitting in front of a dilapidated house. They were in an area, which was to receive water & sewerage services, and they had to vacate the building. They were exhausted after clearing out their meagre belongings, and I snapped the image before the spell was broken.

Picture 1:

“The image of the old man was captured in Pretoria outside the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA) offices. The old mans name is Willie Herman who was originally from Elsierivier in the Cape. He came to Pretoria in the 80’s to work as a boilermaker, was injured in a work related accident, now finds himself destitute in Pretoria - he lost his left leg in the accident. When he started to tell me his story, I put the camera aside and listened to his life story.

Picture 2:

“I was showing students how to hide the identities of people they interviewed using lighting, when I asked these two students to pose for a profile shot - Athabile Mrasi (right) and Sinentlahla Vulindlu (left).

Picture 3:

“The image of the man in the red T-Shirt, I captured on my way to Alice (Fort Hare). This old man was working in his field on a blazing hot day. He seemed pleased that I took the time to capture the image . I snapped two, and showed him the images, and he just laughed and went back to work. There was a language barrier sadly, yet we are compatriots and we shared a special moment. At least I’d like to think so.”

Picture 4:

“I took this shot earlier this year, and I really enjoyed the shoot. The model is a friend Noloyiso Siqele. I enjoy doing portrait photography outdoors, and in the late afternoon, when the light in East London is just magical!”

DISABLED SWIMMERS CLEAN UP

NEW SA COACH HAS THE EXPERIENCE

Disabled swimmers Jared Burger and Mathew Moss made a huge impact at the SA Disabled Championships meeting that was held in Bloemfontein recently.

The Eastern Cape swimming team picked up 15 competition medals at the event. Amazingly, Burger and Moss earned 12 of those medals between them.

Burger 20, picked up 8 medals while Moss who is only 11 years old come home with 5 medals after competing in the U14 boys group.

Burger brought home 2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals and an SA record for 200m butterfly. He swims freestyle and butterfly events.

Moss grabbed 1 gold and three silver medals for breaststroke and backstroke events. He is

a student at Stirling Primary School in East London. Moss swims for the Aqanova Club.

He competes in the S9 class for swimmers with only one arm. Considering that, he swims against much older boys he is reconised as one of the bright young disabled stars.

Burger competes in the S10m class for swimmers with neurological disorders.

Two years ago, Burger moved over to the disable swimmers code.

In March while competing in the SA Open Water Swimmers Disabled event Burger won gold medals for the 3km and 5km races.

Burger completed the first year teaching degree at Fort Hare University after matriculating at Selborne College. This year he decided to take a gap year to see how far he could go with

swimming. Earlier this week Burger

participated at the Senior Nation Disabled Competition in Durban.

A total of 77 EC disabled team members and 23 mangers made the trip to take part in swimming, goalball, judo, boccia athletics and 7 A side soccer.

EC disabled swimming committee member Chantal Burger praised the sponsors and the EC Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Convention for a well-organised trip.

“It was great everything including meals was paid for. I would like to thank our sponsors Kempstone Group, Sondalani Sports, Elvin Coup and former SA rugby player Keith Andrews for their support,” Burger said.

The Eastern Cape will be hosting this event in Port Elizabeth next year.

Allister 'Toetie' Coetzee (born 23 May 1963 in Grahamstown) is a South African rugby union coach and former player. He was appointed the head coach of the South Africa national rugby union team in April 2016.

PLAYING CAREER

Coetzee has been involved with rugby since 1974 – he spent 22 years as a player and has been coaching ever since his retirement as a player.

Prior to the unification of different rugby union governing bodies in South Africa, he represented SARU between 1985 and 1991 and was captain of their side between 1988 and 1991.

He was a Junior Springbok in 1992 and played Currie Cup rugby for Eastern Province between 1992 and 1996 and also played in the 1994 Super 10 competition for them..

During his playing career, he was also a teacher at Gelvan Park Primary School in Port Elizabeth, where he worked for fifteen years. He played as a scrum-half and retired at the end of 1996.

COACHING CAREER

He started assisting Eastern Province coaches Johan Kluyts and Steve Baker in 1996 and was appointed assistant coach.

In 1998, he was also appointed as the team manager at Super Rugby side the Sharks, where he also became an assistant coach in 2000. He also coached the Emerging Springboks in 1998, a Vodacom All-Stars team in 1999 and the South African

Under-23 and South Africa 'A' sides in 2000. He was also on the coaching staff of the South Africa in 2000 under Harry Viljoen, taking charge of their mid-week side. He became head coach of the Mighty Elephants for the 2001 season,

becoming the first coloured head coach of a provincial side. He remained head coach in Port Elizabeth until he resigned in July 2003. He became a selector for the national team at the end of 2003

He was appointed as assistant and backline coach to Jake White's Springboks in 2004, where he remained until 2007. He was on the coaching staff of the side that won the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

In 2005, he was also appointed backline coach for the Cats for the 2006 Super 14 season.

Following the end of Jake White's tenure at the Springboks, Coetzee was one of the four main candidates to take over as head coach. However, after losing out to Peter de Villiers, he accepted an offer to become backline coach of the Stormers.

He also took over as head coach of Western Province later in 2008, Coetzee was appointed head coach of the Stormers for the 2010 Super 14 season.

He remained with Western Province and the Stormers until the end of 2015, when he moved to Japan to take over as head coach of the Kobe Steel Kobelco Steelers.

On 12 April 2016, he was appointed as the head coach for the South Africa national rugby union team.

Border coach keeps perspective Border Bulldogs coach Elliot Fana believes the Cell C Sharks will be out to make a real fight of it when the two teams meet in a Currie Cup match at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London Friday 15 April at 7pm.

After Border’s shock win against the Lions last weekend, a much bigger crowd is expected to turn-up to see if the Bull Dogs can follow through on their last victory.

Fana issued a warning to the Sharks and all other opponents they will face this year.

“Our weakness in the past has been our inability to put pressure on our opponents and I am pleased to say that those days are gone” said the coach.

Fana believes that one of the biggest positives from the win last week was the fact that Border won away from home.

“That is something we really struggled to do last season, everyone knows that Border do well as the season starts and then we throw a good start away each year. That is bad history. We must change that by beating the Sharks on our home ground tomorrow,” Fana said.

Border captain Siya Madaka said that Border won last week be cause we wanted the win more that they did.

“Today we will do our best to make sure that can down on handling errors. Last week we missed a number of good chances because the last pass went astray,” Mdaka said.

Border did grab a win against the Sharks in Durban in of three preseason friendly matches played in March. The team suffered a narrow defeat against South Western District (SWD) and was badly beaten by Free State in a match played in Kokstad.

“The friendly match results including the win against

the Sharks must be seen in perspective. The fixtures were an ideal opportunity to test combinations and all our squad players. It was never really about winning or losing. I believe the team is in a good space to win again tonight, although we expect the Sharks to really come at us. Boland beat them last week and their players will be out to put that humiliation behind them.

“It is all going to be a test of mental strength and I am sure my players are ready for the challenge. I think that we are much stronger mentally that we were this time last year and that will show in results,” the coach said.

Border Bulldogs captain Siya Mdaka left and Coach Elliot Fana are planning to set a trap for the Cell C Sharks at the Buffalo City Stadium.
