    BRUINS PROSPECT ROUNDUP

As we prepare to flip the calendar overto new month, scoring is the name of the game with Boston Bruins

prospects making a positive showing in both the amateur and procircuits.

Ryan FitzgeraldandBrian Ferlinare both providing a consis-ent offensive spark for Boston College and Cornell University withhe NCAA season in its early stages.

Fitzgerald has not looked out of place in the Hockey East, scoringt a point-per-game clip with the Eagles and surprising some ob-ervers with his precocious two-way play.

The two-time Massachusetts state champion with the Malden

Catholic Lancers has always possessed a high-level hockey IQ,but the freshman center brings a well-rounded game that allowscoaches to use him in a variety of situations. At 19, the 2013ourth-round selection has made a seamless transition to the elitecompetition faced at the NCAA level, and looks like a seasonedpperclassman in the early going of his first campaign.

Ferlin said before the season that getting off to a better start thane did a year ago was one of his objectives, and he has backedhat up with six goals and 12 points in his first 10 games of 2013-4.

At 6-foot-2, the Floridian does not play a snarly, aggressive gamebut is adept at using his big body to establish an effective net frontpresence and is a consistent offensive contributor when using his

quick skating burst, impressive vision, hard shot and deft passingouch to generate quality scoring chances for the Big Red. Theatural athlete whose father played college baseball may not comerom a traditional hockey hotbed in Jacksonville, but he thinks thegame well and his overall game has improved considerably in hisunior year since arriving in Ithaca, N.Y.

n Providence, 2010 second-rounderAlexander Khokhlachevisnjoying more consistent success in his first full AHL year, as he isdapting to the more rugged and faster pace of that professional

    eague.

Although he doesnt possess blazing wheels and explosive jumpon his skates, Koko compensates with slick puck skills and theigh-end creativity to make plays in tight spaces. Looking ever more

comfortable, the former Windsor Spitfires star has gotten strongernd is showing more willingness to consistently take the puck intoraffic than he was in the past. When the 20-year-old Moscow na-ve is on top of his game, he can back defenders off with a daz-ling array of moves and effortlessly create scoring opportunities.

Although he was scratched from a recent game vs. Springfield, hat roster decision had more to do with roster management and

    matching up than anything performance-related.

Anthony Camaratallied his first career AHL goal against Spring-eld and has had to make the most of every opportunity he gets,

playing 14 out of his teams first 18 games. With so many tal-nted forwards in the Providence lineup, ice time has been hardero come by for a few of the rookies, but the depth will help keep

Bostons farm club competitive throughout the season.

    BRUINS PROSPECT SNAPSHOT:

Kevan Miller, D Providence (AHL)/Boston (NHL)

Scouting report:With a 6-foot-2, 205-pound frame and qfeet, Miller is a textbook shutdown defenseman for the modergame. His skating is above average with a wide-base, good econtrol with fluid pivots and direction change. He plays wit

head up, looking to advance the puck with crisp, high-percenoutlets even if he does not often lead the rush or attack aggsively on offense. Although not much of a goal scorer, the rshooting Miller has a heavy shot that he launches from the pand keeps low to the net for deflections. He is a rugged, tcious defender who staples opposing wingers to the boardsuses his strength to win one-on-one battles or keep the frothe crease clear. A natural leader who captained the UniversVermont Catamounts, Miller has the on- and off-ice attributeBruins covet.

Outlook: At age 26, the Los Angeles native is a little older the average Bs prospect, but has earned his NHL opportunitold fashioned way, with hard work, perseverance, and opporttic play. The undrafted free agent who signed with Providencan AHL deal after his final NCAA season earned his NHL conwith a steady, hard-nosed game and willingness to buy intoBruins culture. Beginning the season as the teams eighth defer on the depth chart, Miller took advantage of his recent caby playing the simple, yet effective brand of hockey hes becsynonymous with in Providence. His value as a plug-and-playtion speaks to the impressive depth the Bs have built acrossorganization. Miller serves as an inspiration to aspiring pros are passed over in the NHL draft, but willing to do the grunt and take the longer path to hockeys highest level.

    KEVAN MILLER

    PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT

With just over a minute let in regulation, and the Bruinsp3-2 over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Head Coach Claude Juliensent Captaindeno Charato the ice.

With the Pens sending an extra attacker out, it was a shutdown mission. Joining himwas defenseman Kevan Miller, playing in his third NHL game.

ohnny Boychuk was unavailable, as he was in the hallway shaking off a puck head caught in the throat.

he next rugged, steady blueliner at Juliens disposal: Miller.

A surprise for some, Miller stepped into the Bruins lineup that was out bothAdamMcQuaidand Dennis Seidenberg due to lower-body injuries.

n his third season with the organization after four years at the University of Vermont,nd time prior at Berkshire School, a prep school in Western Massachusetts, Milleras had plenty of seasoning before hitting the NHL ice.

Well, he was solid, said Julien, of opting to send Miller out for the shift. He waspretty reliable defenseman for us all night. So he was out there at the end, and I

hought he was a good player for us.

Sometimes you talk about experience but you also talk about merit; and he de-erved to be there with the circumstances we were under at that time.

ittsburgh ended up tying the game with 0.3 on the clock with the extra attacker, efore the Bruins earned the 4-3 win in overtime. But the confidence the Bs benchoss had in the defenseman could not be understated.

Steady. Solid. Poised. The defenseman draws out all of those adjectives, and more, when you find someone talking about his play.

Hes a defensive defenseman who makes good strong plays; he did that, saidulien, after Miller made his NHL debut against St. Louis on November 21. He wastrong, I really liked his game. I thought he was a poised player out there for his firsteal NHL game.

He had received his first-ever regular season recall the day prior, with his familyoon en route to Boston from Los Angeles.

n Millers first three games, Julien utilized him on the penalty kill, and didnt shyway from inserting him into any situation, for that matter. He averaged 21 shiftsnd around 17:00 in ice time.

ve been impressed with him since he got here, said Chara. And thats not justght now when he got called up but even in training camp, playing really solid andtrong on both ends of the ice; offensively and defensively.

Preseason, exhibition games, hes just really a solid defenseman to have so Im noturprised and obviously Im very happy that we have him.

Miller was the final cut from training camp, before the Bruins opening the 2013-14eason. He had traveled with the team to Vermont for their team-building trip. Hets in well.

Hes a strong, physical D-man. Hes physically mature, he can handle guys, he canlose well, so he played well, Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli had said of

    Millers play in the preseason.

Just trying to do my job and keep it simple, the soft-spoken Miller says, of his style.

No cliches here, though. The defenseman keeps it simple, and steady successomes as a result.

Hes labeled as a defensive defenseman, a stay-at-home type like Adam McQuaid, who also merges Boychuks style and a piece of the shutdown presence Charaffers.

When Miller sees the pinch to keep the play progressing, he takes it - like he did to

keep play alive and help set up a goal by Carl Soderbergin his NHL debu

Im not going to do a bunch of spin-o-ramas on the blueline, the defenssmiled. But if I can get it deep and just try to keep the forwards going, Ill take

He didnt really get beat in any areas of the game and sometimes, you needkind of guys that will come in and just, not play it safe - because I thought hegreat job at supporting the attack and made some real good moves at the blcarrying the puck across, said Julien, following Millers first game.

So he just played with a lot of confidence and thats what, as a coach, you asthose players that come up is just go out there and play; and thats what he d

Having played two seasons in Providence at the AHL level, Miller has beensoned by the defensive system of P-Bruins Head Coach Bruce Cassidyansistant Coach Kevin Dean.

It makes it a simple transition for players like Miller, who follows in the footsteMatt Bartkowski and Torey Krug. They have all easily slotted in on the Bruinsline after time with Providence.

Theyre both great players Krug and Bartkowski Ive learned a lot fromof them, said Miller. I think Dino and Cassidy down there really help out a loobviously have done a great job with a number of guys. I felt pretty confident cin because of them.

They harp on us pretty good and try and get us ready and make sure were in the case the call comes.

Now that Miller has showcased the steadiness that defines his game, its

    maintaining that.

Just keep it up, said Julien, of the message. In his case, hell get in troublestarts complicating the game and thats what we liked about him in training c

I was always one of those guys that really respected Lidstrom and Detroit aerything just looked easy for him. Everything was simple, he never tried to beand he was real effective for obviously his team.

Its not always about how much you do, its what you do in all those pressurations and throughout the whole game.

He just has to go out there and continue to play the same way; have thafidence to bring that game night in, night out. Because from what he did, nbecomes, Can you become consistent at doing that? And if you are, then byou know it, youll be in the NHL - for good.

    Alexander Khokhlachev

    PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT

At 20 years old, Alexander Khokhlachevs playing in his second season for the Providence Bruins. He washe second round draft choice of the Bruins in 2011, and checkedn via phone call to give an update on his progression through theystem.

ust 17 years old at the time, how did it feel for Khokhlachev, knowns Koko around the Bruins system, to be picked 40th overall byhe Boston Bruins just days after they secured their first Stanley

    Cup championship in 39 years?

A special day. Before the draft I didnt know who would draft mend after Boston picked me it was just a great feeling to get myrst chance to make a team. I had a lot of feelings in the draft andwas a great feeling.

Khokhlachev made his professional debut with Providence in2012, which was an especially busy year for him. After inking ahree-year deal with Boston, he started his season in Russia play-ng for MHC Spartak of the KHL, and wound up playing in theU-20 World Junior Championship. He then went back to the OHLo play his third season for the Windsor Spitfires before finding his

    current home in Providence.

Its been a long year and a really good year; my first pro year. Iearned a lot and know what to expect right now, he said.

This storied past led Bruins Assistant GM Don Sweeneyto previ-ously call him a bit of a nomad. Has Koko found it difficult to moveround leagues and teams so often?

Its not just different leagues but different countries; Russia, Can-da, America, he said. But its all good. Everywhere is kind of funnd I enjoy it everywhere.

s usually a tough adjustment for international players to comeo an entirely new country and adapt to the ways of North Ameri-

can hockey, as well as the obvious language barrier; howeverKhokhlachev has taken the challenge in stride.

When I came the first time I was 15, to Canada, he said. But itsot really hard because there was great people living there and ev-rybody helped me when I first came there. My billet family helped

me a lot my first year and the whole time when I lived with them.

I mean, home is home, but I love everywhere Ive been.

The success Koko had in the OHL, amassing 193 points in 152egular season games plus another 20 points in 18 postseason

contests, certainly helped showcase the offensive talent that hepossesses.

The OHL is probably the best Junior league in the world. I hgreat three years there. Everything was good, he said. Myyear we went to the conference finals.

Khokhlachev went through his first professional training camping this years preseason with the Boston Bruins, which wa

exciting opportunity for the young center.

It was my first time really practicing with NHL guys and it wgreat feeling. Tried to do my best every day.

Everybody [in the Bruins organization] helped me there anmade a mistake they told me and I tried not to repeat it, he Every day I tried to get better and I tried to learn more every d

Khokhlachevs raw talent is obvious, and he turned some hduring training camp and his few preseason games. Howthere are improvements he must make to his game before hedon the Spoked-B.

I try to do better every day and work hard and I just see how be better everywhere, like all my game. Be stronger, smarter, faeverything.

Though he isnt polished enough to break through into the yet, Koko realizes his NHL journey is a work in progress, and challenge he takes on with pride and enthusiasm.

To play in the NHL, the NHL is the best league in the world, soneed to be a really good player to make it. So right now I neeimprove my all-around game and try to be stronger and fasterkeep working every day to play here.
