A Pledge to Parish Life My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is.

It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its community, if I invite and bring them.

It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be.

2013 PARISH MISSION Saturday, February 23rd

through Thursday, February 28th

This very special time of preaching, prayer, and spiritual renewal will be led by Fr. Pete Schavitz, a Redemptorist priest.

ALL PARISH LEADERS AND

ORGANIZATION should add this event to their calendars, avoid scheduling other activities during this week, and do all they

can to encourage the attendance and participation of their members in the most

important event in the faith life of our community.

Celebrating the Real Presence in Our Church

Putting One’s Life on the Line A HEALTHY CHURCH ALWAYS SENDS MISSIONARIES, even to the ends of the Earth. Since 1956 the Archdiocese of St. Louis has sent priests, religious, and lay members of our local Church to Bolivia, still today the poorest nation in South America. In doing so the people of La Paz and Calamarca have been blessed as much as the people of St. Louis. Living, working, sharing faith together always changes people’s perspectives on each other and the world they share.

At one time the peoples of the world were divided into independent and dependent nations. Today former colonies have achieved political independence, even as nations have become increasingly dependent on one another for resources, for security, and for survival. Sharing and cooperation in a whole range of international issues is a necessity in today’s world.

With the growth of technology, science, and communications all nations today are mutually dependent in varying degrees. New forms of inequality have arisen. Wealth, investment, and research tend to become concentrated in a handful of affluent nations, giving them power over poorer nations and their people. Our Church proclaims with great concern that all peoples are equal members of God’s family and with great courage the moral dangers inherent in today’s international relationships.

The missionary’s duty is to protect the human dignity

of the people entrusted to his or her care,

even if this requires putting one’s life on the line. Commentary on 1986 US Bishops’ Pastoral Letter, To the Ends of the Earth

Traditionally we have given too narrow a definition to both “salvation” and “kingdom” of God. There is more to salvation than “going to heaven”. The salvation Jesus preached was not merely a liberation from death and damnation, but also liberation from every kind of slavery that plagues our life on Earth - hunger, disease, oppression, ignorance, exploitation, and much more. Slavery to sin is the root cause of such human miseries.

Today I encourage your thought and prayer about this: That the lives of our missionaries in Bolivia as well as our own Christian daily living must be more characterized the principles that guide the work of every disciple:

(1) Respect for the dignity of every human person (2) Commitment to the unity of the human family

(3) Defense of the right of all person to share the goods of the Earth (4) Promote the need to pursue the international common good

(5) Teach the importance of distributive justice in a world ever more sharply divided between rich and poor

SHORTER NOTICES. Please also give your attention to these matters of importance. Eucharistic Adoration in Our Parish focuses the power of our prayer on the needs of our parishioners and the work of the Church everywhere. This week pray and think about joining this parish ministry.

“No Christian community is built up which does not grow from

and hinge on the celebration of the most holy Eucharist.” Pope Paul VI

Becoming a Member of the Catholic Church is the work of every baptized person. Invite and encourage someone you may know has been looking for a church or shown interest in becoming Catholic. Welcome and Support the Work of Religious Sisters meeting in St. Louis this week to discern their continuing role and ministries in our Church.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Each day the people are to go out and gather their

daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether

they follow my instructions or not.” (Exodus 16:4)

God frowns upon it when we take or keep more than we need. When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, that which they hoarded away became wormy and rotten. In the same way, God calls us today to be content with a fair portion and to be willing to share the rest.

William Scheid players will present “Some Enchanted Evening—The songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein” produced through special arrangement with R&H Theatricals of New York City. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This week will see the summertime celebration of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The story of the Transfiguration is proclaimed twice each year; once on the Second Sunday of Lent, and then again on August 6. In Lent, the revelation of Jesus’ glory foreshadows the triumph of Easter. During the sum-mer, this feast comes—significantly—forty days be-fore the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In the Gospel proclaimed on this day, Peter wants to know if he should build “three tents.” In Hebrew, the tents are sukkot, rickety har-vest shacks also called in English “tabernacles” (from the Latin word for “little shelters”) that harvesters set up in fields so they can stay there to work day and night. Harvest booths are built and ornamented for the Jewish festival of Suk-kot. One aspect of this festival is eager anticipation for the ingathering of all peoples (including ancestors Moses and Elijah) under God’s own sukkot shalom, the tent of peace. In some patristic traditions, the late summer and early autumn of the church year are imagined as an extended ingathering festival that begins today and reaches fulfillment at Epiphany.

OSTEOARTHRITIS: HOW IT’S DIAGNOSEDHOW IT’S DIAGNOSEDHOW IT’S DIAGNOSEDHOW IT’S DIAGNOSED

The diagnosis of osteoarthritis begins with a medical history, or information about your health background. The doctor will specifically ask what con-ditions run in your family and what symptoms prompted you to seek medical attention. The follow-ing points are what the doctor may want to know be-fore osteoarthritis is diagnosed: • Description of your symptoms • Details about when and how the pain or other

symptoms began • Where you are feeling pain, stiffness or other

symptoms • How the symptoms are affecting you

• Whether you have other medical problems that could be causing these symptoms

The next important part of the diagnostic process is the physical exam. He/she will look at your joints and touch those that you have described as pain-ful. They will be looking specifically at areas that are tender, painful or swollen, as well as indications that the joints may be damaged. To see how arthritis is affecting your body, they will ask you to stand and move certain joints. This will show the doctor how well the range of mo-tion in your joints are, or how well you can move each joint through its full capabilities. They will also exam-ine the position and alignment of your neck and spine. The doctor may also ask you to walk around the office so they can see how you are able to move your hips and knees. The doctor made order some laboratory tests that will possibly aid the physical and medical exams in making a diagnosis, although the blood tests are not usually helpful. Joint aspiration is another possible test, the fluid of the joint is examined to help diagnose os-teoarthritis. X-rays may be ordered or even an MRI. These will allow the doctor to see changes in cartilage and bones, as well as damage to these areas, that occur with osteoarthritis. When should you see your doctor? When you have sudden swelling, warmth, or redness along with pain in any of the joints; joint pain accompanied by fever and/or rash; and severe pain that prevents you from using the joint.

May God’sGod’sGod’sGod’s grace always be youryouryouryour path of life!

What’s Going On? This week (August 7th—11th) 800 members of the Leadership Conference for Women Religious (LCWR) will be holding their annual conference in downtown St. Louis at The Millennium Hotel, discerning their response to the Congregation of the Doctrines of the Faith’s recent inquiry and review. The Board of the LCWR recognizes this matter has deeply touched Catholics and non-Catholics. It believes that the matters of faith and justice that capture the hearts of Catholic sisters are clearly shared by many people around the world.

A group of concerned Catholics have organized several welcoming activities while the sisters are in St. Louis. Each activity is planned to reflect gratitude for, support of, and solidarity with the sisters for their works of charity and witness of faith. Out of respect for the sisters need for a prayerful atmosphere these activities will be held off-site from The Millennium property.

Welcoming the Sisters and Showing Your Support

What You Can Do

• Welcome the sisters as they arrive at the airport

and The Millennium Hotel. Shifts at the airport are in two hour increments starting at 11am and ending at 8pm. Shifts at The Millennium are in 1 hour increments running 10am through 5pm. Contact the Catholic Action Network to sign up. Signs provided.

• Write a letter of thanks and/or support to a sister.

Our goal is to collect 800 “Dear Sister” letters, one for every woman attending the conference. Send letters to: St. Louis—A “Sister” City, c/o Jan McGillick, 5689 Oleatha, St. Louis, MO, 63139 OR Catholic Action Network (address below).

Our program focuses on the bone health of individuals 65 and older. We have a portable bone x-ray machine that scans your forearm to see if you are at risk for osteoporosis (weak bones). You will get your results the same day. The x-ray strength is equal to about 10 minutes in the sun so no protective gear is necessary. Bone scans take 10 minutes per person and a CARE team member will be with you throughout the test. APPOINTMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED. Please call Joan at 741-1271 or Janice a 314-660-7334 to make an appointment. Men and women are invited.
