Des MereDithWelcome to Shortwood

Hi all,

This afternoon we will be looking to continue the good run of results we have put together recently, but we won’t be getting carried away because there is a long way to go and every game will be taken one at a time!!

Things are starting to sink in a little now on how we want to go about our business, we are getting a good response from the whole squad who have and will be needed over the next few weeks with a full programme through the rest of December and into the New Year!!

As usual we are always looking to improve the squad whenever possible, and subject to the

paperwork being completed in time we are hoping to include new signing Richard Thwaite, who will be a welcome addition to the squad and club!!

On the injury front Sam Taylor is still missing with a niggling knee injury that has seen him miss the last 3 games but hopefully isn’t to far away now !

With this being the last home game before Santa pays us a visit , On behalf of the whole squad, Burnsy and myself we hope you all have a great Christmas and hope we can deliver a couple of early presents starting today !!

Des.

Bristol Manor FarM History

Bristol Manor Farm Football Club was formed for the 1960/’61 season before disbanding and reforming for the start of the 1962-63 campaign. Our ground here at ‘The Creek’ used to be the site of the Port of Bristol Authority Sports & Social Club. In 1965 when the authority moved to new premises, Manor Farm took it over, making it our permanent home.Having a base of our own enabled the club to apply successfully to join the Somerset Senior League where we made good progress through the divisions. In 1977 the club decided to step up to the Western League, joining the First Division for the start of the 1977-78 season. The Club were crowned Division 1 Champions for 1982-83 and since that promotion to the Premier Division of the Western League we have played most of our football at that level. The last decade at the club has certainly been the most ambitious period of our history. The club went into the 2009-10 campaign with reasonably high expectations for an improvement on the previous season’s fifth placed finish but sadly the ‘Farm never really looked like challenging for the top spot. It was a different matter in the FA Vase, however, where the club enjoyed our best success for years, making it to the fourth round proper before going out to eventual semi-finalists Whitehawk. An exciting run during the 2010-11 FA Cup competition saw us win a penalty shoot-out against Almondsbury Town and hold Basingstoke Town to a draw before being pipped by a single goal in the replay. The club were the proud winners of the Premier Division’s ‘Best Match day Hospitality’ award, no doubt due to all those home-made cakes!2011-12 was the most successful season in the history of the club to that date. We won the GFA Challenge Trophy after beating Shortwood United 5=0 in a thrilling final and this was followed three days later with another cup triumph when we beat Willand Rovers in extra time to finally lift the Les Phillips Cup.We lost the GFA Trophy Final to Bristol Academy in 2012-13 however and finished third from bottom of the Premier Division. After good service to the club, Manager John Black decided it was time to stand down.

The start of the 2013-14 season saw the beginning of a new era at Bristol Manor Farm FC when current boss Lee Lashenko took over the Manager’s job. Fresh from winning the title with Bishop’s Sutton, Lashenko quickly made an impact with Manor Farm.An FA Cup run that saw us put nine goals past Oldland Abbotonians and then seven past Lymington Town quickly brought us to the attention of the national press. The tabloid photographers had a field day down at The Creek – photographing the team with the FA Cup and a variety of ‘farmyard’ accessories and costumes – it was a brilliant and fun day that everyone here will never forget! The First Round Qualifying Round tie against Corsham Town then ended in a 4-4 draw with Manor Farm winning the hard fought replay 1-0. We then also held Bridgwater Town to a 4-4 draw in the next round before narrowly going out 2-1 in the replay. The club continued to fight for top spot in the league and also applied for promotion to the Southern League. We finished the league season as Runners-up but were unsuccessful in our promotion bid when Larkhall Athletic were accepted ahead of us. It was the highest-placed finish in the club’s league history, however, breaking club records for goals scored and fewest goals conceded. In 2014-2015 Bristol Manor Farm missed out on promotion to the Southern League by 3 points, allowing Slimbridge to go up instead. We did win the GFA County Challenge Trophy however with a 2-0 win over local club Shirehampton. During an epic 2015-2016 season an heroic run in the FA Vase took us to within sniffing distance of Wembley with a notable comeback win in the fifth round, overcoming Sunderland RCA 3-2 and a long return trip to the North-East for a Quarter Final showdown with Morpeth Town. On a heavy pitch The Portwaymen were unlucky to go out with Morpeth scoring a breakaway goal in the dying seconds after Farm had laid virtual siege to The Highwaymen’s goal throughout the second half. Morpeth went on to beat Hereford FC 4-1 in the showpiece Wembley final. We finished third in the Western Premier League – missing out narrowly again on promotion but winning the GFA County Challenge Trophy for the second season in succession with a record 9-2

win over Lydney Town in the final. On a happy night at Ashton Gate our former Exeter City and Truro City striker Dean Stamp also won the Bristol Post ‘Footballer of the Year’ award for his astonishing tally of 59 goals in all competitions. The many highlights of Manor Farm’s triumphant 2016-17 season will be forever woven into the fabric of the club’s history as we finally secured that elusive promotion to the Southern League in emphatic style, amassing 102 points and scoring over 100 goals on the way to being crowned as Western League Champions. We also unluckily missed out on a second FA Vase Quarter Final in succession with another narrow 2-1 defeat in a fifth round tie in front of 1,500 partisan fans at Bromsgrove Sporting FC. An extraordinary unbeaten league run of 21 games between September and March (19 wins and 2 draws) went a long way to securing the coveted league title for Manor Farm however, which was eventually clinched with three games to spare following a 2-0 win at local rivals Hallen on Good Friday.

THE HISTORY OFSHORTWOOD UNITED

Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank.

The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions.

League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League.Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further

six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed.

The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood’s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood’s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3-0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0-0 till the 67th minute when

the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5-0 winners (AET).

Shortwood’s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy after a 1-0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final.

2011-12 season, however, was pivotal in the Club’s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final. Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad’s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history!

The 2012-13 season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a

Page 13: £1 - Amazon S3 · Chris Burns (Assistant Manager /Coach ) Chris has had great playing experience at a professional level where he played at clubs such as Portsmouth , Swansea , Bournemouth

magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position.

The 2013-14 season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out – but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears.

The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions.

2014-15 failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players

moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish.

2015 -16 continued Shortwood’s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20

seasons involvement with Shortwood – and the club movedforward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge. 2016-17 Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. Paul ‘Des’ Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season 2017-18.

AFC Totton 2 Shortwood United 0The spirit in this Shortwood side is tremendous and their performance at high flying Bideford earned them a hard earned and justified point. The game was richly entertaining and both sides will feel they could have won it but equally both sides will be pleased with a point. Praise must also go to the referee, Mr Kane who had an excellent game.Manager Meredith was delighted with the point: “We deserved that! The players did everything I asked for them and we are now 4 games unbeaten and that is another valuable point. The players are now starting to buy into what we are trying to do and we are reaping the rewards. Ashley Davies shaded man of the match today in a terrific team performance!” Wood started very brightly and forced a string of early corners and it was no surprise when they took the lead albeit under completely bizarre circumstances after 9 minutes. There was no danger when James Mayne played a simple back pass to his keeper Steve Oliver but inexplicably Oliver took his eye off the ball and it went under his foot and trickled into the net for the oddest of own goals. Craig Beattie missed a great chance to level when his header went wide while at the other end Bideford dithered in defence and White and Morris could have taken advantage. After 25 minutes Shortwood went two up and again it was the on fire Nick Humphreys who scored. For the second

game running Bakare Aliu supplied the diagonal pass and Humphreys hit a great first time shot low past Oliver. Bideford’s response was immediate as Seymour cut in and shot hard and low across Burton into the far corner. Before the break Bideford had two good chances to level With Burton saving well from Roberts and then Turner firing wide.As expected Bideford came out after the break and put Wood under pressure and twice Burton saved headers from corners – but the Wood defence was strong and Davies in particular was commanding. Shortwood continued to look dangerous on the break and Bideford could not relax. The game was really opening out. Seymour whistled one just wide and Oliver palmed a cross from Morris down but White could only knock the dropping ball wide. Freeman tested Oliver with a driven free kick before Seymour went down under a challenge from Meredith and converted the penalty himself to level after 78 minutes. Both sides pushed for the win and Wood could have won it with two minutes to go when Haswell’s low shot was inches wide. Both sides were warmly applauded from the field by an appreciative crowd.

Team: Burton, Meredith R, Noakes, Davies, Bakare, Haswell, Ismail (Hawes 63), Freeman, White (Hathaway 79), Humphreys, Morris

AFC Totton 2 Shortwood United 0Shortwood went through to the semi finals of the Glos Trophy after this remarkable win over Bristol Manor Farm at Meadowbank on Saturday. It was remarkable because John Evan’s side, already missing several regulars through injury and unavailability, were also without Johnstone and Axton as they were cup tied. They also lost Ben Pugh and Luke Bennyworth during the game as they picked up knocks, were also 0-2 down and missed yet another penalty! The whole side deserve tremendous praise for recovering and showing excellent spirit – especially James Coates who moved from right back to front man and never stopped running. The icing on the cake was the penalty shoot out where Wood scored all five of their penalties with aplomb.

Wood were totally in command for the first 15 minutes and could easily have been a couple of goals to the good. Bennyworth saw a header flash just wide in the first minute, Allard shot wide in the fourth and Vic Webb was particularly unlucky in the tenth – his low shot rebounding off the inside of the post before being hacked to safety. Farm slowly recovered though and took the lead after 18th minute with their first real effort. Farm broke from the back and when the ball came to James Lee he controlled the ball on his thigh, spun, and hit an unstoppable shot over Thomas and just under the bar. Kye Thomas came close with another effort a minute later and Bennyworth limped off to be replaced by Cornwall. Both sides had chances to score before the break, the best of which fell to Will Steadman who headed wide from close range.

Wood started the second half in command. Vic Webb’s excellent run and cross was just too high for Pete Smith to get a meaningful header in on goal and Baldwin had a shot blocked after Coates had shown a nice bit of skill. Wood were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute after

Webb was upended but Ben Pugh slammed his effort against the underside of the bar to keep Wood’s unenviable run from the spot going. Farm doubled their lead through Hiscox after 67 minutes following a comedy of errors and it looked all over for Shortwood but Wood refused to lie down.

Pete Smith reduced the arrears with 15 minutes to go with a near post header and Chris Greenhough headed the equaliser after 79 minutes. Wood took total control for the last 15 minutes and Farm keeper Ballard kept his side in it.

The first period of extra time was even but again Wood flew at their opponents in the second half and Coates had two efforts well saved by Ballard.

James Baldwin scored Wood’s first penalty before Rich Thomas saved Rutter’s effort to give Wood the advantage. Allard, Coates and Webb all scored and it was left to Rich Thomas himself to take the last spot kick and send Wood through – to the obvious delight of his team mates and supporters.

Afterwards John Evans said: “I thought we deserved to win. It’s an excellent result - especially considering we had a patched up side! Every one of our penalties in the shoot out were great – I just wish we could take them in normal play….”

Wood will be away to Bitton – who top the Western League – in the semi final.

Wood has two crunch games this week. They are at home to 3rd placed Witney on Tuesday (7.45 pm) before travelling to table topping Hungerford next Saturday.
