Gardening Tips– Plant shrubs and trees whilst the

soil is still warm but plants are less likely to be dried out by the sun.

Prune shrubs cutting out dead, dis-eased, dying or crossing branches.

Scarify and top dress lawns, to remove moss, dead grass and encourage healthy grass next season. Now is an ideal time to sow or lay a new lawn, while the soil is still warm. Repair worn patches in the lawn with an equal mix of grass seed and compost. Cover with light netting or twigs to keep of animals and remind you where you've sown. When weeding the grass out of my path, I've often trans-planted the little clumps to bare patches in the lawn.

Continue to water and dead-head hanging baskets, pots and planters, but reduce feeding.

Clip hedges, including box, laurel and beech.

Check the readiness of fruit and vegetables. Apples and Pears should be gently lifted with the hand, if the stalk remains on the fruit but parts easily from the tree, it is ready to be picked.

Tidy and cut back perennials.

Sweetcorn should be ripe enough to harvest. Pick when they are a pale creamy colour. However corn on the cob deteriorates quickly, so it should be used as soon as possible after picking.

Make sure that ponds are topped up, if you need to top up your pond check the PH and nitrogen levels of the water afterwards.

Spring flowering bulbs should be available in your local garden centre. Plan where you are going to plant them and buy according-ly, it's great fun filling up those brown bags with bulbs, but can be expensive. If you have a small garden, or are planting bulbs in pots, think about using smaller varieties of bulbs. Miniature daffo-dils ,dwarf tulips and crocuses. Plant bulbs of one variety together for effect.

If your tomato plants have been affected by blight, clear the plants and burn them, adding them to the compost heap will not kill the spores.

Lift marrows, pumpkins and squashes off the ground in order to keep them clean and reduce slug damage.

Continue to collect and store seeds from plants, for sowing next year. Store any collected seed in paper envelopes or bags, then put them in an air-tight container.

Collect and dispose of wind-fall fruit. Leaving them on the ground encourages pests and can damage your lawn.

Feed tomato plants fortnightly with a liquid fertiliser (this must be diluted in water to prevent burning the plants)

Pond fish will eat more in the summer, feed them little and often, once or twice a day. If the food has not been eaten within 15 minutes, remove and dispose of the excess.

Tetney Blow Wells– Anglian Water Project

People reading this article probably do not need to be told how special Tetney

Blow Wells is. It is a site dear to the hearts of many in the area. And no wonder.

The tranquil pools, fed from underground springs bubbling though the chalk be-

neath, are an unforgettable sight and a lovely place to simply get away from it all

for a while. But the site is also a haven for wildlife. Indeed, it is nationally im-

portant. Water violets grow in the blow wells themselves, while the marshy

ground around them is home to a community of rare wetland plants for which the

site has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. As owner of the site,

Anglian Water has a duty to keep the site in good condition and to care for the

species that have earned it such a special status. This brings us to the changes tak-

ing place at the site over the next five years. For many years, trees and willow

scrub has been allowed to spread on the site for the benefits they bring to other

wildlife. Now though, the trees have become too numerous, overshadowing the

pools and threatening to dry out the boggy ground. The answer is to remove

many of the trees, but their loss is bound to cause worry and upset. No-one likes

to see tress disappear, especially in this part of the country where such stands of

tress are few and far between. Trees are important of course, and can provide a

home for many a creature, but too many in the wrong place they can also cause

problems. The blow wells have been here a very, very long time. They are a rare

and wonderful part of Lincolnshire’s natural heritage. The trees are new arrivals

and their increasing numbers and size are threatening species that cannot survive

such changes to their fragile environment. All this leaves Anglian Water with a

tricky balance to strike. We have been working closely with the Lincolnshire Wild-

life Trust, which manages the site, and with Natural England, to find the right so-

lution. We now believe we have a way to protect the blow wells while safeguard-

ing the wildlife around them. The first step was to enlist the help of a Lincoln-

based ecological consultancy firm, which carried out lots of surveys to find out

exactly what was living on the site and where. Among the finds were three kinds

of bats, including Daubenton’s bat, which is known as the 'water bat' as it fishes

insects from the water's surface with its large feet or tail. So the plans were

changed. Work will now start on a part of the site away from the bats and some

areas of woodland will now be left for them, along with those trees planted over

the years by hard-working local volunteers. Also present were water voles and

otters that use the ditches around the site. Happily, these will also remain undis-

turbed. Work will also start in autumn and finish in March to make sure birds and

other animals are not disturbed during the breeding season. In a nutshell, our aim

is to keep the site special, for the wildlife that relies on them and for the people

living nearby. That means a lot of work, which has to be done in a way that

doesn’t affect any wildlife that relies on the site. Where we find it, we will adapt

our plans accordingly.

Humber Refinery and Tetney Tank Farm

The Humber Refinery is located on a 480acre site and was built in 1969 every

day the refinery processes over 230,000 barrels of crude oil and other feed-

stock's. The crude oil arrives in marine tankers which offload their cargo at the

Tetney monobuoy in the Humber estuary. From here the oil is pumped by un-

dersea pipeline to the tank storage at Tetney oil terminal, before again being

piped underground to the Refinery for processing. Every year 90 tankers, each

carrying up to 130,000 tonnes of crude, unload at the Tetney monobouy the first

to be installed in British waters. The monobouy is a large floating drum-shaped

structure and is moored to the sea bed by 8 chains. The discharging process

from a tanker normally takes 24 hours. The Humber Refinery produces 14 mil-

lions litres of petrol a day, enough for a family car averaging 11kilometrses per

litre (35m per gallon) to drive 150 million kilometres, or two trips to the moon

and back!!

Coffee morning every Wednesday 10.00 and Bingo every Thursday at 14.00. All welcome, just come along to Staves Court Communal Hall.

Partnerships for Renewables (PfR) is proposing a wind energy development on and

around Environment Agency-owned land at Louth Canal. They believe the land is suita-

ble for three turbines which could generate around 16 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green

electricity every year - enough to power the equivalent of 3,600 homes*. There is a

community benefit fund associated with this project, which with the new three turbine

layout would equal £18,750 per year for the life of the project, if it is

built. This fund will be managed by local people and spent as the

community sees fit. Following July’s public exhibition at Tetney Vil-

lage Hall, there will be another opportunity, this time at North Cotes,

to learn about project progress and give feedback. There will also be

another chance to view to-scale photomontages, created from com-

puter-generated images to show what the turbines would look like in

the landscape from a variety of viewpoints. A map of the latest tur-

bine layout will also be available.

The community drop-in surgery will be held at North Cotes Village

hall from 3pm to 7pm

on Wednesday, 21

September. All members of the community

are invited and any views, questions or

feedback are welcomed by the project

team. For more information visit

* Please note: The environmental benefit figures are

based on: three, 2.5 megawatt turbines with a total

installed capacity of 5MW, operating with a 25% ca-

pacity factor; average household electricity use of

4,602kWh per annum; and the electricity generated

displacing electricity generated from CCGT / average

fuel mix - approximately 430gCO2/kWh’
