Editor’s CornerSo here we are with the Spring Issue of y o u r l o c a l F R E E magazine. Sadly it is not much like Spring yet but we have to be thankful we are not suffering the conditions of those people in other parts of the country, especially the South West. All that water, where has it come from and where and when is it going to go? Anyway, hopefully Spring is only just around the corner, along with Easter, and we can all get out and about, enjoying local activities. Once again we have had to retain 80 pages in this issue because of the demand for space for contributors. This includes articles in relation to issues of very much local interest, including the proposed Wind Farm in the Nocton / Dunston Fen area

and the closure of our local Metheringham Library. There is also an item I would ask people to study with some seriousness, on page 7, regarding the future of the Metheringham Fayre and Feast................. Before leaving you to read the magazine can I just clarify something. It has been suggested, here and there, that seeing as MACLA produce this magazine in conjunction with the parish councils of Metheringham, Nocton and Scopwick, you as tax payers are paying towards its publication. Can I dispel this rumour straight away. From day one this magazine has been self financed and all expenses relevant to you receiving it on your doorstep (free of charge) is done voluntarily and by the monies received for the adverts we carry. Be assured, the day we have to go to your local councils for funding is a long way away and hopefully will not happen. Pete Ford - Editor

ONE VACANCY

Metheringham, Sots Hole and Tanvats Parish Council News

Annual Village MeetingThe 2014 Annual Village meeting will take place on Tuesday 29 April starting at 7.00pm in the Village Hall. This meeting is not a formal Parish Council meeting. There will be free refreshments during the evening and the opportunity to view the exhibits and s o c i a l i z e w i t h t h e s p e a k e r s a n d parishioners. Make a note in your diary and come along to find out what is happening in your community. We look forward to meeting you.

A n t i S o c i a l B e h a v i o u r The parish council have recently received reports of anti social behaviour at the car park on Prince’s Street. Metheringham Community Skate Park Many of you will be aware the parish council began work on the skate park project on the recreation field in Metheringham in the summer of 2013. Unfortunately the start date of the project was delayed for some weeks due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the contractor. This delay subsequently led to the project being suspended because of the amount of rain during the autumn and cement vehicles were unable to enter the field.

T h e p a r i s h c o u n c i l h a v e b e e n investigating a number of options to ensure the skate park is completed before the grant funding expires. Work is due to re-commence at the beginning of March and should be complete within four weeks. An official opening ceremony will be planned for the spring, so please look for details in the notice board and website.

Metheringham, Sots Hole and Tanvats Parish Council News - contd from page 5Meg Youthy In November 2013 the parish council made the difficult decision to close Meg Youthy due to a lack of attendance by the young people. This was extremely disappointing as Meg Youthy was formed to help alleviate perceived Anti Social Behaviour in the village. The parish council would like to thank the volunteers who gave up their time and expertise to help with this project. The council will reconsider the project in the future if the need arises.

Network Rail – Great Northern Great Eastern (GNGE)The final stages of the work at the Blankney level crossing were originally due to be completed in December 2013 with a final sign off in February 2014. METHERINGHAM VILLAGE HALL - WHAT’S ON

LIVES First RespondersYour local LIVES First Responder Group has been busy over Christmas and into the New Year. On average we are attending 7 calls a week and the group is managing to offer day and night cover for most of the time now, and last month we only had two daytime shifts not covered. All our First Responders are volunteers and give up their time to help anyone who dials 999 in the village or surrounding villages. A ‘shift’ will normally run from 07.00 to 19.00 and then from 19.00 to 07.00, if you are ‘on duty’ you need to stay within a six minute arrival time of the area, so you tend to stay at home and just get on with what you would normally be doing. You could go down to the shops but you would take the kit with you and be ready to go to a call at any minute. Drinking alcohol is not allowed when on call, not even half a glass of wine and in the winter you have to keep your car windscreen clear of snow or ice so you can just get in and go.

For a night shift we don’t stay up all night, we will go to bed at the normal time and have the phone at the side of the bed (on loud), ready for if it goes off. As a group we are well supported by everyone financially but we are always looking for people to help with fundraising. If you are interested in either fundraising or even becoming a Responder, please get in touch with our co-ordinator Beth on 01526 321919

The future of Metheringham Fayre and Feast We may only be in the early part of 2014 but already thoughts

have to turn to Metheringham Fayre and Feast in October. Unfortunately the Parish Council has serious concerns that it may

not take place this year. Each year it gets harder and harder to inspire local people to step forward and donate some of their time. Each

year the Parish Council get negative feed back regarding the event but only a very few seems willing to step forward to give any

input in how it can be improved or offer their services. Yes we know time is precious and no one seems to have enough hours in the day but we (the PC) have reached crisis point and if more people don’t come forward to help us Metheringham Fayre and Feast, could go the same way as

many other village events. Once the Fayre and Feast ceases, be assured,

we will never get it back. PLEASE, PLEASE don’t let us lose a part of

Metheringham’s heritage. THE FUTURE OF THE FAYRE AND

FEAST IS IN YOUR HANDS! If you are willing to help ring the

Scopwick & Kirkby Green Parish Council NewsVillage MaintenanceA good response has been received to the request for volunteers to assist with the various maintenance jobs that need doing in the Parish. More names are always welcomed so please contact Cllr Simon Spink or the Parish Clerk. The local cutting of roadside hedges has uncovered rubbish that was not visible previously. As soon as the weather improves then a work party will be convened to clear litter throughout the Parish. NKDC will provide equipment and make arrangements to take away black bags and any other rubbish.A contractor has been organised to cut the Playing Field and Village Meadow as soon as the ground is dry enough to bear the weight of a tractor and flail without causing too many ruts.A new two year contract is being finalised for grass cutting. That contract will recognise the trial wildflower areas that have been set up by the Conservation Group and will be modified to meet current requirements - especially to take in the overgrown

approach from Vicarage Lane into Trundle Lane alongside the Playing Field.

Flooding and DrainsIt is hoped that by the time this edition is published any issues relating to the continuous downpour experienced this winter will have passed. Clearly the local problems are nothing compared to other parts of the country but that is small consolation to those people living along the eastern end of Main Street in Scopwick.Gradual deterioration of drains and culverts (including some historical misuse) resulted in surface water not being able to escape once it had drained from the rising land to the north. The so called Dew Pond became a lake and threatened surrounding properties including the Limes Care Home. The rainfall may have been exceptional but new drains and culverts are urgently needed to ensure that water runoff is suitably handled in future. Another consequence of the ground water pressure is that seepage into the foul water (sewage) drain has occurred in the same area on Main Street. The result is that toilets cannot be flushed and waste water outlets back up. Anglian Water is well aware of this problem and promised that the drain would be repaired before winter set in. That did not happen and the only way to relieve the pressure in the drain is to pump it out into a tanker. The noise of that tanker is unbearable for those living close by.The Parish Council is acutely aware of these issues and is vigorously pressing for positive solutions.

Parish Budget for 2014-2015It is forecast that the Expenditure for 2013-2014 will be significantly below Budget. This is principally because of reduced grass cutting cost and the fact that statutory provision for election costs has not been spent. The forecast underspend of approximately £5,700 has allowed the Parish Council to consider future expenditure on repairing the subsidence to the extension of the Village Hall without seeking external loans. contd page 10

MAWS

We wish to apologise for incorrect reporting in the Winter Issue of this magazine. Wrong details about the stallholders in the car park at our Christmas Market and crucial information omitted about our annual party (i.e. ‘we pay for ourselves’ was not included). Some people have said it read as if we raised money at the market to go and spend at the party, which is not the case. Every penny must count for the animals. It is important that people know that. Also the party booking arrangements were omitted which affected numbers attending and did not make for smooth running on the night. Despite that everyone had a good evening at the Red Lion, Dunston. Thanks to landlords Mary and John and manager Lorna and staff for making us so welcome.

MAWS p ic ture qu iz , c los ing date 1/1/2014... you have to be in it to win it... only one form returned. The winner of £10 prize money was Ronnie Wright with 35 correct answers. Many of you purchased a picture quiz. Maybe you lost it in all the wrapping paper on Christmas Day. Hope you had a great time and a better new year.

Many thanks to the 13 people who voted for us on the Co-operative Community Champions Central list. We received £29.73 from the Co-op. We had hoped to do a mail drop but this will not cover it so your help is still needed please. Please register again on www.lincolnshire.coop/communitychampions and select the ‘Choose my own Community Champion’ option, Metheringham Animal Welfare Supporters or phone 01522 544632 to speak to the Membership and Community team, Tentercroft St, Lincoln.

2014 has started slowly for our volunteers but soon the pace will increase as we crack on with our recycling programme. More clean drink cans wanted please. Also used ink cartridges. More volunteers

wanted on Friday mornings please due to the increased work load at MAWS Office, 31 Station Rd, Metheringham. Work involves crushing cans, sorting and packing ink cartridges, stuffing envelopes, sorting raffle and tombola prizes. Delivering letter and posters locally. Inspecting charities and sanctuaries. Delivery of cans to scrap yard. Vacancy for an assistant secretary and committee members (hands on training). Mad Fortnight collectors wanted (16 years and over) for house to house, with a can. 26 May to 8 June. For more details if you would like to help, please phone Joyce on 01526 321436. Many thanks to you ALL for your continued support.

The cost of that repair is currently estimated at £11,800 to which a sensible contingency must be added. Note that payment of VAT during the year will stretch resources but it is expected that most of the VAT paid will be reclaimed from HMRC in the following financial year. Parish Council can reclaim any VAT properly incurred.Forecast Income next year is expected to be similar to the current and previous years at around £14,200. The Parish Council will make strenuous effort to boost that income by applying for grants to support planned projects.

In summary the Parish portion (Precept) of the Council Tax will, once a small Government grant is taken into account, rise by about 1 percent for the next financial year.

News from Nocton Parish Council

Since the last report, Nocton Parish Council has been focussing much of its efforts on the es tab l i shment o f a new Vi l lage Ha l l Management Committee and supporting the arrangements for its inaugural meeting. This took place on 29 January and a new Committee and officers were elected/appointed. It was encouraging to see a number of new people coming forward to serve on the Committee who, it is hoped, will be able to bring fresh ideas for the management of the Hall to blend with the knowledge and valuable experience of the longer serving members.

This is an exciting, albeit challenging, time in the life of our Village Hall, the community’s most important physical asset. We have recently considered a report of a local structural engineer who has now advised us that the building’s entire floor slab needs to be replaced. This will require the removal of all the internal wall, thus providing a golden opportunity to remodel the Hall and to upgrade its facilities. As a first step towards such a redevelopment, this year’s Annual Parish Meeting on 15th April will be devoted to engaging with the community to see what sort of Village Hall it would like for the future. The process of preparing a project plan and identifying sources of funding can then begin in earnest!

Unfortunately, there was a disappointing initial response to the advert for a part-time Youth Worker to lead the proposed Nocton Youth Club. However, following an extension of the closing date, a number of applications were subsequently received which are now being evaluated by the County’s Youth and Community Service. It is very much hoped that interviews will be able to take place shortly and the Youth Club started.

As reported in the last edition of this magazine, representatives of Dunston, Nocton and Potterhanworth Parish Councils met to explore the poss ib i l i t y o f deve lop ing a jo in t Neighbourhood Plan. contd page 13

Dunston and Digby School News

At Digby we had a wonderful time at the end of last term. On 6 December we held a very successful Open Afternoon. I am pleased to say that it looks like we are going to have another full intake next September. Classes 3 and 4 performed a pantomime called “Pirates of the Curry Bean” to parents and relatives. It was a great success. The children’s singing was superb and their acting was very impressive. The jokes in the play were very corny; apparently even worse than mine! Classes 1 and 2 also put on a play. They gave two performances of “A Wriggly Nativity” in St. Thomas’ church. This was also absolutely wonderful. The children sang their hearts out and performed with great confidence.................. At the end of last term we also found out that Digby had attained a Level 5 benchmark in the Royal Horticultural Society School Gardening Award. This is fantastic news and means that Digby is recognised as a Royal Horticultural Society Growing School. We understand there are only 125 schools nationally that have achieved this award. This has resulted in £200 of gardening vouchers, a hand held digital microscope, 2 commemorative plaques and the RHS logo to be incorporated on our letter head. Well done to all who have worked towards this achievement. This includes the whole school when participating in our outdoor learning days, the gardening club but especially Mrs Stearn and Mr Hannan who have led the projects that have provided the necessary evidence required for the award. Class 1 have recently entered the “Ready Berry Competition”. They made their own Peter Rabbit Wobbly Hoppity Crumble. This term we found out that Class 1 have become the regional winners for East Midlands in this competition (one of only 9 schools nationally!). I would like to thank Mrs Marshall, Mrs Stearn and Class 1 for their wonderful efforts. . At Dunston on 29 November Barry Cooper from

the Lincoln Judo Academy came into school and worked with each class. They really enjoyed the sessions and I am sure that there will be more children taking the sport up as a result. The football team have now won three matches out of three. Their latest win was a fabulous 6-1 victory at Walcott......................................................... On 6 December we held our Christmas Fayre in school. Father Christmas was very busy in his grotto and I believe that over £300 was raised. We also went to see Robin Hood at the Lincoln Theatre Royal with Digby Primary. The children really enjoyed themselves and their booing and cheering was particularly impressive. Classes 1 and 2 presented “A Little Nativity” in St. Peter’s Church and this was a great success. The children performed with great confidence. Classes 3 and 4 also performed in the church. Their concert was called “Christmas Around The World”. The singing was fabulous. Finally, the school choir took part in the village Carol Service on 20 December. As well as singing two songs, they all dressed up as Nativity figures to help Sister Liz build up the crib scene as she told the story of Jesus’ birth............................................. At the end of last term Mr. Bannister decided to step down as a governor of the school due to work and other commitments. He had been a governor for over twelve years and for ten of those he was the Chair of Governors. I would like to thank him for his hard work and for playing such an important role in the development and success of the school. We will be holding a special assembly for him at the beginning of February. On 6 January we began our term with a joint training day with the staff at Digby in order to update our First Aid training. The children have since settled in well after the Christmas break. We will be holding a series of Swap Days this term when some of the children will be spending the day at their federated school. The Years 1 and 2 children have already “swapped” a n d t h e y r e a l l y e n j o y e d t h e i r d a y. Graham Boyall Headteacher

News from Nocton Parish Council contd from page 12

Following further discussion on the part of the three councils concerned, Nocton and Potterhanworth have now agreed to work together to prepare a Plan covering these two parishes. A formal application to this effect has now been submitted to NKDC and we are currently awaiting its decision before beginning what is going to be a vitally important project to help protect our villages f r o m u n w a n t e d a n d i n a p p r o p r i a t e development.

We have recently agreed to provide a “Welcome Pack” for all new residents moving to the village, the costs of which will be met from monies provided from the successful “Nocton 200 Club”. The pack will provide a wealth of local and other information to help residents settle into Nocton village life and hopefully will be available in the near future.

On behalf of those villages contributing to its purchase, we are now managing the loan of SID (Speed Indicator Device). As a result of a major software problem, however, it has not proved possible to change the speed limit setting and so it has not been in use as much as has been hoped. The problem is currently being addressed and it is hoped that SID will soon be available for deployment.

We have recently arranged for interested Nocton residents to visit Vattenfall’s Wind Farm at Lutterworth in Leicestershire on 17 May. This will provide an opportunity for residents to see and experience at first hand a working wind farm and help to inform the current and future debates on the proposed development on Nocton Fen.

With the support of the Parish Council, and as previously reported, a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme has now been re-established in the village. A very successful inaugural public meeting took place at the end of November when residents received interesting and

helpful presentations from local police officers and representatives of a local security company. Under the leadership of Councillor Graham Jones, NWS Co-ordinators are now in place to cover all parts of the village and their efforts will prove invaluable as we seek to reduce crime in our area. Co-ordinators are also being encouraged not only to look out for and report suspicious activity but to keep a watchful eye out for the more vulnerable members of our community.

At our February meeting we set the Parish Council’s budget and precept requirement. Like all other councils, no doubt, the exercise this year was again particularly difficult – given Central Government’s further changes to the Council Tax funding arrangements – as we sought to balance the need to minimise the financial impact on residents with our wish to continue with a limited programme of village improvements, etc and to provide some funding to support the work on the proposed remodelling of the Village Hall. In the event, the Parish Council agreed to set its budget at £13,480, an increase of £1,030 over the previous year. Taking into account various grants and other income, this will result in a precept for the coming year of £12,338. It was noted, however, that even after this increase, the Parish will still have one of the lowest levels of expenditure amongst local villages of a comparable size. Details of the budget for 2014/15 detailing the way in which the expenditure is planned to be spent are available on the Parish Council’s website.

Finally, a much-needed “finger” sign post is shortly to be erected in Nocton to guide visitors and others to the Parish Church, Nocton School, Nocton Cricket Club, Village Hall, Nocton Park and the Bridle Path to Dunston.Further information about the work of Nocton Parish Council is available on its websitehttp://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Nocton/

Repairs to Dunston Village Hall (Phase I)The subsidence has now been repaired, new drains have been installed and there is now a new concrete path from the Fire Exit at the back of the Hall around to the side near the Lamyman Room door. After the removal of the asbestos debris from the roof space above the Main Hall, a deep layer of insulation has been installed. This work has hopefully completed, with cavity wall insulation in the outer walls. (Phase II)The VIllage Hall Management Committee is now looking at preparing applications for grants towards the cost of our next phase of repairs and refurbishment. We would like to use local firms and contractors so if you are an electrician, plumber or double glazer and would like to quote for the work, please contact Jean on 320810 for more details. 33rd Annual General Meeting

The AGM of Nocton Club was held on 30 January with a healthy attendance of local residents. Sue Morris chaired the business of the AGM before the old Committee retired to allow Kate Tyler (Parish Council Chairperson) to take the Chair for the 2014 Inaugural Meeting under the New Constitution.

Inaugural MeetingCounc. Kate Tyler welcomed all attendees and those who had put their names forward to serve the village as Officers, Village Representatives or Representatives of Aff i l iated Groups. Thanks were also expressed to those who served on the p rev ious V i l l age Ha l l Managemen t Committee over many years and for all their efforts.

After the Affiliated Groups confirmed their nominees, the business moved to identify the applications of candidates for the Committee and those relating to the Officer positions. contd page 21

DOG FOULINGQ. Whose problem is it anyway?A. Nobody’s, if it’s dealt with responsibly.

Bag it - Bin it, and make sure you either take it home with you or put it in a dedicated 'dog bin'.

If dog fouling is not dealt with, it becomes everybody’s problem. We all need to play a part in stopping irresponsible dog owners leaving their dogs’ faeces in public areas. It’s your environment and community that’s being affected.

It's socially unacceptable. It spoils the environment. It's a health risk. Round worm eggs (Toxocara) in dog faeces can cause blindness, epilepsy, asthma and eye infections. The worm eggs can survive in the soil even after it’s rained, so children playing on grass are much more at risk. The bacteria can cause sickness and diarrhoea. What can you do about it? If you see an incident of a dog owner not picking their dogs’ faeces up and walking away, make a note of as many details as possible. The person’s description, (identity and address if known), description of the dog, time of incident and location. Then report it to the District Council on 01529 414155, ask for Paul Yelland in the Environmental Pollution Team. Or contact your Parish Council. All information is dealt with in the strictest confidence and personal details will not be released to the offender. We will contact you to discuss your complaint and will keep you informed of what action we intend to take.......................................................................... What are the penalties? If you commit an offence under section 3 Dogs (fouling of land) Act 1996, you may receive a £50.00 fixed penalty notice or be fined in court up to £1,000. So clean up after your dog. Don’t fall foul of the l a w ! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Where was everyone?

Yes, it is the middle of winter, yes it is a chilly, wet night, but it was a shame more people did not feel it necessary to turn out and support a very important meeting regarding two of the main topics of conversation in the village at the moment. It was apparent that many parishioners have various concerns regarding transport issues in and around the village so the Parish Council went to the trouble of inviting a representative of the L.C.C. Highways Department to attend a meeting in the village in order to allow parishioners to air their views and have some of their questions answered. Some progress, although not as much as many hoped, may have been made in this area. Following along from that, the big question regarding the future of Metheringham Library was open for discussion. Again the Parish Council had invited a local County Councillor to be present in order to hear the views of the assembled villagers. That was the idea. The reality was that out o f an app rox ima te to ta l o f 3 ,600 p e o p l e r e s i d i n g i n t h e v i l l a g e , only approximately 30 could be bothered to attend, and out of those, there were a number of Parish Councillors who probably would have attended anyway. When ever I have been out and about in the

v i l l a g e r e c e n t l y , I c o n s t a n t l y hear people talking / complaining about either the state of the roads and parking issues, or the demise of the library. But where were those vociferous people when given the opportunity to have their say? What message does this convey to representatives of the Local Authority when the village can only muster a turn-out of approx. 1% of the population?!

Community Police Panel

The Community Police Panel is a group of local volunteers who meet with the Neighbourhood Policing Team every 3 months to set the focus of additional police activity in the villages along the B1188 from Potterhanworth through to Blankney. We aim to represent the concerns of local people and identify whether the focus should be on, for example, speeding, anti-social behaviour or crime awareness. The meetings are open to the public with the next one to be held in the Dunston Village Hall on 24 April at 7 pm. We can be contacted by e-mail on.......................... [email protected] or through your Parish Council clerk.

Blankney Cricket Club News

We are now starting to get ready for the 2013 season. The various league AGM’s have come and gone. Blankney will only be running two teams this season.

The committee regrettably decided to withdraw from the South Lincs and Border league as we thought that we did not have sufficient players willing to play Saturdays to be sure of fielding a side every week. We hope that this is a short term thing and that in the future we will be playing Saturday cricket again. The Sunday side will continue to play in Division Two of the Lincoln League and hopefully with the demise of the Saturday team this side will be much stronger this season and our objective will be to get promoted to division o n e . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . As soon as the weather is kind to us we will be starting outdoor nets and would

welcome any new players to those nets. We will hopefully have two pre season friendlies against clubs from Norfolk and Cumbria so that we are ready for the first league games. Our own AGM will have been held by the time this article is printed so I will update everyone with all the changes in the next article. We are always looking for new players so if there is anyone out there who would like to join the club or knows anyone looking for a game of cricket please get in touch with me as soon as possible. We have a dedicated website at www.blankneycc.com, a facebook page and we can be f ound on tw i t t e r @blankneycc.

If anyone wants to know anything about the club or who wishes to join please do not hesitate to get in touch with me or any other club member.

Important new development for New Life Church, Metheringham!

As of 12 January 2014, along with other New Life Church Locations at Lincoln, Grantham, Scunthorpe and Hykeham, we have changed our name to become:

We are now known as Alive Metheringham. Our name change extends to the Kids & Youth Clubs we run, and what was Mission X will become Alive MegA Friday - although we appreciate it will take a while for folks to get used to the new names!

Our services and meeting place remain pretty much the same, but as part of ‘One Church, in Many Locations’ our links with the other Alive locations in Lincoln, Grantham, Scunthorpe and Hykeham will enhance our ability to reach into our community and serve with various projects.Projects such as the Foodbank Bin we purchased and placed in the Co-op Store in Metheringham. We are very grateful to the Co-op for allowing the bin to be placed in the store, and many thanks to all of the shoppers who have so generously donated food to help people in crisis in the area. Thank you all for your kindness and generosity.

Metheringham Amateur Dramatics MAD – for short!!

As I write this article MAD is now in the final rehearsals for our Pantomime ‘Cinderella’. As you wil l know, last year the annual pantomime was reluctantly not performed, for the first time in 21 years. Fran Pembery agreed to direct the pantomime for 2014 and we were delighted that this annual event went ahead. ... I am sure this will be a real success and as you read this we will be deciding what we will be performing in the future. Over the past years we have done pantomimes, full length plays, one act plays and reviews in various venues in and around Metheringham. This includes Metheringham Village Hall, Dunston Village Hall, Blankney School Rooms, St Oswald’s Church, Blankney, St Wilfrid’s Church, Metheringham, plus A Mid Summer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare in the Stables at Blankney. We now have nearly 50 members in our organisation and we want to have a full programme of performances for 2014. So this is where you come into it!!! We would like to know what you would like to see our group perform for you, our villagers. We would like you to email us and let us know what you think. You can email us at [email protected] or you can go onto Facebook - Metheringham Amateur Dramatics and leave us a message. I think you will agree that we are a very talented lot in MAD and we have turned our hand to a lot o f v e r y d i f f e r e n t a n d c h a l l e n g i n g performances, and to continue in this vein, we would l i ke to have your input . I can think of lots of plays I would like to direct, but due to where we can present these performances, we are sometimes a bit stuck as to what scenery we can have on

stage or stowed in the wings of, say, Metheringham Village Hall. We have also shied away from doing any more open air Shakepeare performances due to our British weather. For Midsummer Night’s Dream, it was perfect summer weather, but for Twelfth Night there was a monsoon for one of the performances!!! So whether you would like us to perform. County Council Report - Tricia Bradwell 2014/15 Council BudgetThree years ago we set ourselves the target of reducing the Council's spending by £125 million over four years to meet vastly reduced funding and I am pleased to say, we are on target to deliver these savings. It has meant some very difficult choices around the services we prioritise and provide, some of the most difficult since I have been in office. The future is still very uncertain and last year we increased our target to make around £148m of savings by 2015, to account for further reductions in the funding we received. Our aim is to protect essential services, but it is inevitable that we are facing some more difficult decisions and another review of our services is likely. We want to continue to protect services for the most vulnerable adults and children in our communities, and to keep people safe, inc lud ing F i re and Rescue and road maintenance. It is not just local councils who have to cope with difficult budgeting decisions and we know many households in Lincolnshire are still finding it tough to make ends meet. This is one of the reasons why our budget for the next year proposes to freeze council tax for a fourth consecutive year.Metheringham LibraryOn 4 Feb the Parish Council held a public meeting to discuss the future of Metheringham L i b r a r y . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . contd page 36

Metheringham Swimming Pool

2013 was a good year for Metheringham Swimming Pool, all that lovely sunshine keeping us very busy! We are now looking forward to the new season and our hope is that we have another long warm Summer and we stay ‘vandal’ free!

We will be holding our AGM in the near future so please watch out for posters. We are presently in need of a new Secretary, whose task would be to take minutes, write letters and complete the Lifeguard rotas. Anyone interested, please see the contact details on the rear cover of this magazine.

Also, is there anyone, of any age, out there, who is able to spare a few hours a week to join our band of dedicated committee members in keeping the area around the pool, clean and tidy and maybe, even some small Flower Beds! Anyone interested please contact our pool maintenance co-ordinator, Malcolm Wallace on 01526 322493.

In past years childcare providers and other businesses have made use of our facilities. If there are any other groups out there who would l ike to hire the Swimming Pool, please find details on Facebook.

If anyone has any suggestions for ways in which we can add to, or improve Metheringham Swimming Pool, please do not hesitate to contact us.

If you are a Lincolnshire Co-op member and have a dividend card you can help with our fundraising. Simply visit w w w . l i n c o l n s h i r e . c o o p /communitychampions and select us to receive your portion of the Community Champions fund, then every-time you shop we will receive a donation - thank you

From Cllr John F Money: NKDC District Councillor for Blankney, Metheringham, Dunston and Nocton Parishes........... Nocton Fen Proposed Wind farm Update: You may wonder why your respective parish councils have not been more vocal about the proposed wind farm, or getting involved in the local Windfarm Action Group PNF (Protect Nocton Fen). They are in the same position as I, as a district councillor. There is no issue with the parish council expressing a view, especially if it sought input from residents before so doing. It could freely send observers to WAG meetings, or of course, individual members could join the WAG, and campaign (as individuals), providing they entered any parish council meeting, discussing the proposal, with the proverbial ‘open mind’. But a Parish Council, actually joining a WAG as a corporate member, would be unadvisable...However parish, district and county councillors have to be careful that they fulfil their obligation to represent all their residents, whether they are for or against wind farms............................. That said members can express an opinion beforehand, as I did in your last edition, providing, when I enter the council chamber (when the application is discussed) I have an open mind, and listen to all submissions, before making my final decision on which way I will

vote. At this moment in time my position is the same. I have attended several meetings, acquiring enormous amounts of information, since my article, which even strengthens the case against ‘on-shore’ wind farms................. I had a very productive meeting with County Cllr Colin Davie, Executive Member for Environment, Economic Development, Planning and Tourism. Also present was Cllr Patricia Bradwell (our county councillor). As a result, Cllr Davie assured me, the County Council will vigorously defend its wind farm position statement, which has been adopted by the full council, and regarding the one proposed at Nocton Fen, he will wish his council to fully oppose it. Cllr Davie was hugely instrumental in getting the previous wind farm application withdrawn in 2005, please watch this space......................... For information purposes only - anyone wishing to contact the WAG PNF, a website is imminent.............................................

During a recent walks around the Ward I went up the main drive to Nocton Hall. Having the benefit of my binoculars with me, I took the opportunity too look closely at the fire damaged property and I was shocked at the

M e t h e r i n g h a m F C N e w s - contd from page 54

Nine of their twelve registered players have been on the score-sheet this season with Harry Shaw top scorer with 14 goals. He and new signing Corben Metcalfe have picked up one monthly ‘Golden Boot’ award each. Finally come the Under 16s, run by John Simpson. Playing 11-a-side they have a very small squad of just 14 players which makes for little leeway to cover for injuries etc. This has seen them struggle throughout this campaign and they sit near the bottom of their division. They have failed to win since the opening day of the season but have drawn two in recent times, including a 5-5 score-line. Top scorer is Sam Flintham who moved from defence to striker this season. He has scored 11 goals and has failed to score in only three matches to date. This has seen him pick up one ‘Golden Boot’ award. The team is looking to continue next season a t Under 17s so they are desperately looking for players to join them. Interested players please contact manager J o h n S i m p s o n o n 0 7 9 1 7 7 9 2 1 5 7 . Despite the continual increase in trying to run a football club, with kit, equipment and match officials costs, the main out-goings, the club continues to keep its head above water financially. Two successful fund raisers have been ‘Last Man Standing’ and the Club’s Race Nights – regarding this we will be holding our Annual ‘Grand National’ Race Night on Saturday 5 April in the Star and Garter (8.00pm). These are fun packed events with no knowledge of horse racing required at all and ‘If You Are Lucky’ you can make a few pounds for yourself. Anyone interested, please come along. Speak to Butch in the pub or any club member to buy a Horse (£5). . Pete Ford – Secretary / Treasurer

Metheringham FC News............................... The football season is fast coming to a conclusion with just 3 months left to play. This said, it will be a busy three months for a couple of our sides whose season has been compounded by ‘cup runs’. This includes the Sunday XI who, to date, have played only a handful of league games because of having to play no less than eleven cup matches. The team reached the quarter finals of the Sunday League premier cup competition, the Ron Eaglen cup, before going out 3-1 to FSC Victory, the holders and Premier league champions for the last three seasons. In the Kelly Read cup (the villages competition), for which Metheringham are the holder, the club is scheduled to visit Saxilby in the quarter finals in late February. The biggest achievement by the club this season though, was the club reaching the semi finals of the Sunday County Cup, which attracted over 100 clubs from across the county. This is the furthest the club has ever gone in this county competition and hopes of reaching this prestigious final were high. Five ties had been played up to the semi final, before travelling to Ironstone, Gunness, on the banks of the River Trent near Scunthorpe. The opposition were unbeaten in their leagues in three seasons but Metheringham took a first half lead through Ben Garrick before it all went wrong. Early in the second half an overly keen referee sent one of our players off and the opposition took full advantage of this (together with a strong back wind) to score twice and end our dreams. M a n a g e r D a v e I n m a n w a s m o r e t h a n disappointed in defeat but hopes the side can bounce back and go on to retain the villages’ Cup whilst pulling in almost a dozen league games in the closing weeks of the season. The Club’s other busier than normal side has been Matt Thompson and Spencer Watkins’, Under 12s who are in the ‘B’ League of 14 teams which makes for 26 league games in the season. Because of their own cup run they too have at least ten league games to play. Their cup success has seen them reach the semi final of the League Cup for their

first ever time, after beating a higher league side in Lowlands in an earlier round before coming up against local rivals Bardney in the quarter finals. On one of the most bitter days of the season, in driving rain throughout, the side went down to Bardney, not only seeking to reach the semi final, but to avenge a 5-0 home (league) defeat. Despite both sides losing players during the game, through the bitterly cold weather, it was a case of ‘who wanted it most’ on the day. ‘Meg’ took the lead through Lenny Watkins, only for Bardney to level. Keeper Max Graham then made a save worthy of the Premier League to keep his side in the game and then with less than ten minutes to go, Josh Bellamy netted twice, to secure the side’s place in the semi final. This tie will be played on 23 March at Metheringham with Fishtoft (6th in the A League) their opponents. If you can support the side, please come along to the Sports field (10.45 am kick off).

Regarding the club’s three other sides, the Under 8s, who play 7 a-side friendly games, have improved progressively as the season has gone along. Managed by Chris Wood and Darren Lloyd, they won just two of their opening eight games but since then have been beaten only once in their last six. With twelve players signed on, three have played every game and a further four have missed only one. George Woolley leads the way as top scorer with 11 goals and goal keeper David Willumsen has picked up three Monthly ‘Golden Glove’ awards. The Under 10s (9-a-side) had a trying time last season but now under the management of Graham Shaw and Dale Firth they have turned things around. Last season they won just two games but this time around they sit in mid-table having won h a l f t h e i r g a m e s , s c o r i n g o v e r 5 0 goals................ contd page 57

Metheringham Over 60sOn 4 December, 120 members and guests attended our annual Christmas Dinner, held in the village hall Metheringham. An excellent meal was followed by our annual draw. A number of prizes were donated by the Lincolnshire Co-operative Society with the remaining prizes donated by members. Coffee, mince pies, sherry and boxes of chocolates were also given to everyone.

At our first meeting of 2014, held on 8 January, well known and lovely local singer "Sharna" entertained us with a variety of rock and roll, and ballads, with humour and wonderful interaction with her audience. Songs from: Chris Montez "Let's Dance"; Connie Francis "Lipstick On Your Collar" and "Stupid Cupid"; Boney M Medley "By The Rivers of Babylon", "Sunny" and "Daddy Cool". Whenever Boney M records are played at functions you are guaranteed a full dance floor. Interestingly, although the four original members were principally Jamaican-born singers Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett, with Maizie Williams from Montserrat and Bobby Farrell from Aruba, they began their career in 1975, in what was then West Germany. Not unlike the Beatles in that respect. Other songs by Sharna, included Gerry Lee Lewis's "Great Balls of Fire", Lulu "Shout" and a New Seekers Medley "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing", "You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me" and "Beg, Steal or Borrow", Sandie Shaw "Puppet on a String", Dolly Parton "Here We Come Again" and Abba's "Mamma Mia". Sharna has a wide range of songs that she uses to suit her audience, the venue or event, and we look forward to her return.

Metheringham WI Metheringham WI is 80 years old this year and celebrations will take place in June. The theatre trip in November to see Singing in the Rain was enjoyed by all.Our November outing to Burton Agnes Hall was very interesting . The hall was decorated for Christmas with items from the gardens, woodland and handmade crafts. The hall is Elizabethan, built about 500 years ago and very much a family home. The original Norman Manor House still stands and was built 900 years ago. This was followed by a trip to Sigglesthorpe Garden Centre.

December was our Christmas Social with a quiz, food and carols with Jane Foster on the keyboard. Our New Year Dinner was this year in the Church Hall with outside caterers – good food and a very enjoyable evening.Darts and Ten Pin Bowling are still very popular.February - Joy Liddle is coming to give a talk on the work of the Street Pastors.March – AGM plus Bag Beetle.April – Richard Quirk, Yeoman of the Guard.May – Mandy Griffiths – Talk on her trip to Peru.Metheringham WI meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.15p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Report from Counc John Money - contd from page 22. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . deterioration that has taken place since my last visit over a year ago. The exposed limestone masonry is now saturated with the heavy January rains and if we get some hard frosts in February or March the stone work will expand and break up further. The site is owned by a property developer Leda Properties Oxford, who have made no attempt to protect the old hall in the interim period prior to any redevelopment planned. It is such a shame that a part of local heritage is being treated in such a way and to say the least, I am disappointed with the system as a whole, that can allow this type of situation to continue. The Distr ict Council have commissioned a feasibility study and options appraisal, undertaken by Mary Anderson and the Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire together with English Heritage. The parish council is heavily involved and a public meeting was held in the Village Hall last year. Karen Bradford, NKDC’s Corporate Director, has met with Leda’s representatives on numerous occasions but still we are in a state of impasse. I can assure you all, both Cllr Rob Kendrick and I, are doing what we possibly can and if or when there any future developments, you can be assured we will let you know..... ............................................ A planning application has been submitted for the development of an Anaerobic Digester at the old flax factory site on Metheringham Heath by

Pretoria Energy. This is the type of renewable energy project I like.......................................... For people who don’t know, an Anaerobic Digester generates electricity, by the following process - Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the conversion of organic material, such as energy crops like maize and sugar beet pulp, etc., by micro-organisms, in a sealed airtight container. Organic waste is retained in a digester tank for 20 to 40 days, and the digester is fed continuously. Digesters produce, biogas, which is 60% methane and digestate, which has low odour and contains valuable plant nutrients. The biogas is cleaned and used as a fuel in a combined heat and power plant to produce renewable electricity which can be used locally or exported to the grid. (A Cow’s digestive system, with its four stomach compartments, is a basic Anaerobic Digester). The digestate is then used as a high grade fertilizer that also improves the soil structure of arable land. This method of producing electricity is constant and sustainable; and personally I would like to see more of them, (in the right place of course) as this one is proposed. If you would like further information regarding this project – please visit NKDC planning on line website and look for application 13/1426/FUL; also copies of plans and other relative information will be available to view at the Info-Links off ice in Metheringham. Metheringham Senior Citizens

First I hope everyone had a good Christmas and look forward to a happy year ahead.

We had a lovely day out on Tuesday 4 February. 42 of our members went to Pennell’s Garden Centre, followed by lunch at the Elite Restaurant on Tritton Road, Lincoln. From here, before returning home, we stopped off at The Range, also on Tritton Road, for more shopping. Most of us, including me, had not been here before and realy enjoyed the experience.

Many thanks to all the Committee for their input, especially, Mr D Bowler, who suggested and booked the meal for us all.

Our Annual Party will be held on Saturday 12 April at 3.30 pm in the Village Hall. Entertainment this year will be Noel Gee.

Our Easter Bonnett Parade will be held on Thursday 17 April at our Coffee Morning

Singing for Pleasure

W h a t i s S i n g i n g f o r P l e a s u r e ? Just that! A weekly meeting to sing our socks off for the sheer joy of it.

H i s t o r y . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In March 2011 a group of friends got together to discuss starting a singing group. We have catholic tastes, ranging from Gregorian chant to Westlife, via songs f r o m t h e s h o w s a n d f o l k t u n e s . Most of us had already enjoyed the privilege of singing with established groups in the village, be they the MAD choir or Wilfrid’s Own Warblers. We enjoyed singing so much, we wanted to do more of it, so I gathered together a group of friends who want to sing for pleasure. I approached a professional music teacher. And we began.

Aims....................................................... * To enjoy singing together......................... * To improve our singing so that we enjoy it e v e n m o r e . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . * To enjoy existing friendships and create new ones

Where and when........................................ We meet on Thursdays in my comfortable h o m e h e r e i n M e t h e r i n g h a m . The taught part is from 7.20-8.40 pm, people generally come from about 7.10 pm which gives everybody a chance to get settled and say hello. We can also have a chat afterwards. We always start with a quick warm up, practising breathing techniques, scales and such likes. Our teacher is very experienced and comes up with lots of different ways to make this more interesting than it sounds.

Then, we sing. Sometimes we suggest a song we would like, sometimes the teacher suggests one. He provides songs and

rearranges them for us. Sometimes we sing in two part harmony, sometimes the teacher joins in with a third part – that is often a really good sound which tends to bring me out in goosebumps!

We pay the teacher £40 a week and split the cost between us. At present it comes out at £5 each and I ask for 4 weeks’ worth at a time.

When the money runs out I ask for more (to clarify, if 40 people came, we would only pay £1 each – if I were to be the only one, I would pay the £40 myself - which has never happened).

W h a t n e x t ? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ii) We would really like to double our numbers (there are usually 8 or 9 of us). ii) Spread the word; singing together is fantastic, healthy and an excellent chance to meet up with some friends of an evening...................................................... iii) secure the future of the group (the more of us there are the better are our chances o f c o n t i n u i n g ) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . iv) enjoy more and more varied songs, v) maybe venture into three and four parts s o n g s . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Fancy coming to see for yourself? Come and listen, see if it is for you No solo - No audition - No strings

Metheringham Squash Club - from page 44..... For the younger age groups, the British open is the world’s only platinum event, attracting elite players from all corners of the globe. This was a huge step up in class for William who competed against opposition from India, Kuwait, Mexico and Norway. It was nerve racking and tough going for William but not without success when he took out the Norwegian number one 3-0, showing that he has it within him to compete with the world’s best. The eventual winner was an incredibly skilful Mohamed El Shamy from Egypt. This experience for William has inspired him to work hard on his game and he will be looking forward to competing in the same age group next year............................. ..................................... So who is Nick Matthew?............................... How many British sports stars can you name that are at the very top of the world in their sport? Nick Matthew is the current squash world number one, three times British open champion (the Wimbledon of squash) and the current and three times world open champion. Not to mention three times world team champion, six times European team champion and double Commonwealth Games, gold medalist. And best of all, he is English, From Yorkshire in fact (although we can forgive him for this). Forget footballers on their silly wages, their oversized egos and their disloyal attitudes, our junior squash players have a real sporting hero to look up to!..................... Ian Brayshaw

A New Pastoral Visiting Team

The Benefice of Metheringham, Dunston and Blankney has established a Pastoral Visiting Team that was commissioned by the Rev’d Canon Nick Buck on 1

December at a special service at All Saints, Branston. This is an exciting development in the establishment of a pastoral ministry team utilising the God given gifts of our lay people, for the purposes of visiting, home communion and in time, bereavement visiting. Those who will be a part of the Ministry Team have been approved by the Parochial Church Council and have received appropriate training. They are: Margaret Amos, Sue Glaister, Joanna Finegan, David Honisett, Trish Ward.

In addition it is with great delight that the PCC’s have agreed to the transfer of Carol McGrath’s Authorised Lay Minister’s License to the local parishes. Carol has now received her renewed licence and is also part of the Ministry Team, with a wider remit, including leading and assisting with worship in our parishes.

Sr Liz will be supervising and co-ordinating the Ministry Team. If you know of anyone within our group of parishes who would appreciate a visit, or who are unable to get to church and would like to receive Holy Communion at home, then please contact Sr Liz on 01526 321115.

Please hold in your prayers those who are offering this ministry within our group of parishes.

I’m Fine Thank You

There is nothing the matter with me I’m as healthy as I can be I have arthritis in both my knees And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze My pulse is weak, and my blood is thin But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in.

Arch support I have for my feet Or I wouldn’t be able to be on the street Sleep is denied me night after night But every morning I find I’m all right My memory is failing, my head’s in a spin But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in.

The moral is this as my tale I unfold That for you and me who are growing old It’s better to say ‘I’m fine‘ with a grin Than to let folks know the shape we are in

How do I know that my youth is all spent? Well, my ‘get up and go‘ has ‘ got up and went‘ But I really don’t mind when I think with a grin Of all the grand places my ‘Get up‘ has ‘bin’. Old age is golden, I’ve heard it said But sometimes I wonder as I get into bed With my ears in the draw, my teeth in a cup My eyes on the table until I wake up Or sleep overtakes me, I say to myself ‘Is there anything else‘ I could lay on the shelf.

When I was young my slippers were red I could kick my heels over my head When I was older my slippers were blue But still I could dance the whole night through Now I am old my slippers are black I walk to the store and puff my way back

I get up each morning and dust off my wits And pick up the paper and read the ‘obits‘ If my name is still missing I know I’m not dead So I have a good breakfast and get back to bed

County Council Report from Counc. If you are interested in helping on this project please email me. Speed ManagementHighways and Transport Scrutiny Committee has established a Task and Finish Group to review the current speed management policy in Lincolnshire. As part of the review, a focus group will be held in our Highways Divisional Offices, where the Task and Finish Group will speak to interested people and groups directly. After a very good discussion with members of the public, it was agreed that the County Council would focus on the High Street and Prince’s Street area and put together a plan, for making it safer for pedestrians walking in this area. There has also been a request for a pedestrian crossing

on the B1189 /S ta t ion Road a rea . Unfortunately the feasibility work on this project has been delayed because of the work that Network Rail are carrying out at the Station. The preliminary work includes a vehicle and pedestrian count but with constant road closures, a proper picture cannot be put together. This work will be carried out when the railway crossing work is completed.

Metheringham Squash Club News

Who is Nick Matthew?....................................... With the festive season now a distant memory we can look back on more success and fun times at the Squash Club. . Christmas competitions gave relief from mince pies and turkey whilst bringing some squash nostalgia to the c lub w i th the re turn o f wooden r a c k e t s . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Christmas cup saw players taking part in doubles, racketball and wooden rackets in a full team event (Ryder cup of squash) with Jarryd Adamson leading his team to success before leading them into the bar for some sporting refreshments. The competition was a great success and will be penned in for next year, maybe with the introduction of one or two more sports. The Christmas doubles competition was another triumph, not only for being a great competitive event, but for the fact that nobody was “permanently” injured. With four players in the confined space of a squash court, one or two bruises are inevitable though. The winners this year were the pairing of Dan Carlile and Phil Johnson. The win was made more impressive for the fact that Dan covered three quarters of the court while Phil covered the back left court with his wand like left hand. A great effort from the pair who proved to be the perfect partnership. The Christmas junior competit ion was played throughout a day of fun and games (and sweets) and was won by Ben Mearns, who on the day was unstoppable, beating everyone he came up a g a i n s t . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The new season is now in full swing with the club sporting eight teams in three different leagues. We have six teams competing in the Lincoln leagues, one in the Lincolnshire leagues and one in the Nottinghamshire leagues. Each of the Lincoln and Nottinghamshire league teams consists of five players, while the Lincolnshire League has three player teams. Metheringham (A) is currently sitting mid to bottom of the premier division and could be in need of some squad strengthening for next season. The return of Joe Reeds from university, who has clearly been training while away, and the emergence of Ben Mearns, who has made a meteoric rise up the club leagues, could be

the answer. With these lads knocking on the door of the (A) team, this could spur the current crop of players into upping their game. Metheringham (B) and (C) are neck and neck in division one in the hunt for a promotion spot. Meg (B) however have been plagued by injuries this season, one of which has forced the squash retirement of Andy Bell, who had done well to come back from a serious knee injury, but eventually has had to admit defeat to the perils of sport..In division two, Meg (D) and (E) are in a battle at the top of the division and will be hoping to complete a Metheringham one - two come the end of the season...In division three Metheringham (F), led by Garrie Darling and his “wing man” Tony Woods, have struggled for results, but with the majority of this squad juniors in their debut season it was always going to be a tough year. There have however been some individual performances worth noting with Ellis Karran posting his first, ‘team win’, in a 3–2 epic, against Lindum, and a fully deserved ‘man of the match’ award. The same match saw Alex Booth destroy his opponent 9-2, 9-1, 9-1 in a masterful display of controlled squash. Jordan Croft has been almost ever present in the team this year and has been awarded no fewer than three ‘man of the match’ awards. This team, led by Garrie, is seen as a stepping stone for the junior players to progress up to the higher divisions and saw three players, last term, make this transition. The progress made by some of these juniors in one season has been incredible. The future of our teams is in safe hands!..................................... Away from the club, William Brayshaw and Ben Mearns competed in the Regional championships held in Nottingham, William finishing 3rd in the under 13s and Ben finishing 4th in the under 17s. A wonderful achievement for both players, made even more impressive by the fact that both boys are at the younger end of their age groups and will be back next year, competing for the same titles. William received a massive boost before Christmas when it was announced that he had qualified for the British open under 13s to be held in Sheffield. A huge achievement for the Metheringham youngster. .

Friends of Metheringham School

Our Children in Need disco was a success, raising about £80 for Children in Need which we gave to Metheringham Primary School to add to their takings for this charity. Our next disco is on 3 April, the evening before school breaks up for Easter holidays.

We will be holding our Easter Egg Raffle as usual, selling tickets from 24 March. If you are able to donate an Easter egg - no matter how large or small - then we would be very grateful. Donations may be left at the school office.

We are holding our annual music quiz on 28 March. The cost is £2 each with a maximum of 6 on a team. This is open to all - please just let me or the school office know that you are bringing a team so that we can put out enough tables. This is a really enjoyable night out - and for £2 on a Friday night, who can complain?

The best job in the world

That’s what they told me when I accepted the job of coach driver in 1969. It was, if everything went to plan! But like all jobs that was not always the case. I did the job for 34 years and out of the scores of incidents over the years I will only bore you with one.

The company I worked for had a contract with the M.O.D. at Cranwell, This was to transport the officer cadets and the band from the RAF College to and from their appointments. My tale concerns the taking of the cricket team to the famous school at Oundle in Northamptonshire. The outward journey proceeded without problem and I dropped my passengers off to play their cricket match. After searching the school grounds for somewhere to park I decided the only place for a 40 foot coach was the playing field. Bearing in mind Volvo coaches weigh 14 tons I duly checked that the ground was firm enough by digging my h e e l i n t o t h e g r a s s . A s i t w a s Summertime and the grass was dry I duly backed the coach into position, off the school drive.

I picked up a book to read and poured myself a drink from my flask. After a while there was a creaking and ticking sound. I was not unduly concerned and dismissed it as the sound of the 10 litre engine cooling down. Later I thought I would go for a walk round the town to pass a bit of time. Then as I stepped out of the door the creaking and ticking noise became only too apparent. The coach had sunk into the ground to a depth of about 6 inches! Naturally I was reluctant to report this to the groundsman as the grass looked like a snooker table! I therefore decided to have a word with the local garage to see if they had a vehicle capable of pulling the coach back onto the drive. They said they had but it would cost me £40 - which to me was a fortune in the 1970s - and I knew my boss would

not agree to that. There was nothing for it but to break the news to the groundsman. As it was by now late afternoon, I had to knock on the door of his private house at the school to ask if he had a tractor. The shock was so great to him that I thought he was going to faint! After giving me a bit of a lecture on not parking on the playing field he duly got his tractor and a chain that looked like it had come off the Titanic. We proceeded to the scene of the crime, hoping that the cricket match was not going to finish any time soon!

The chain was coupled to the coach and the engine started. The clutch was slipped and he pulled as hard as he could with the tractor. All his efforts were to no avail as the chain broke in two. We scratched our heads and wondered what to do. Suddenly he had a brilliant idea. He had just remembered that the Forestry Commission chaps were at the school removing tree stumps with a special machine. Knowing they would soon be going home he raced off to find them. To my relief he came back with them and they said they could do it provided there was a tree opposite the coach to chain the machine to. Luck was on my side as there was just such a tree. It was so slow watching the process, just like watching the hands of a clock moving, but it worked!

Just after they had gone, the cricketers appeared, asking if they could have the radio on to hear the Test result. Little did they know what had happen to me during the afternoon!

Good times were when drivers were at the seaside all day in the U.K. and the 10 day trips to Spain, sitting on the beach with a bottle of vino, as the Spanish regulations stated that the coach could not be used for day excursions. Passengers had to use local coaches!

It was just like getting paid, for DOING NOTHING!

Book Review

Snowdrops by A D Miller

From the back of the book Snowdrops is an intensely riveting psychological drama that unfolds over the course of one Moscow winter, as a young Englishman's moral compass is spun by the seductive opportunities revealed to him by a new Russia: a land of hedonism and desperation, corruption and kindness, magical dachas and debauched nightclubs; a place where secrets - and corpses - come to light only when the deep snows start to thaw - Snowdrops is a chilling story of love and moral freefall: of the corruption, by a corrupt society, of a corruptible young man. It is taut, intense and has a momentum as irresistible to the reader as the moral danger that first enchants, then threatens to overwhelm, its narrator. What a weird book, a really easy read, but I felt no real connection with most of the characters with the exception of Tatiana Vladimirovna, who was the victim. It showed how easy it is for a person to get sucked into doing things that they feel are wrong but because that feeling is ephemeral, it is relatively easy to ignore it. I liked the clear pictures it drew of a Russia which is probably still like the book portrays it, corruption that is almost normal and the greed which inveigles its way into Russian society. The death of Konstantin Andreyevich didn’t really seem to have anything to do with the plot, merely the title, so I am unsure as to why it was included. You were left, at the end, with an apparently homeless old lady who ended up with a lot of money that she didn’t know what to do with and didn’t really want. The ending was unsatisfactory for me as, as the book was in the form of a letter to a girlfriend/fiancée, you were never told what happened after she got the letter and so there was no ending and no p i c t u r e o f t h i s g i r l ! L y n n

I really got into this book and couldn’t put it down. Really enjoyed it but after I had finished I thought that the ending really petered out and was not as dramatic as I’d expected or anticipated. Not sure if his girlfriend would understand or want to marry him. He was not the forceful character I wanted him to be - too easily influenced by circumstances, but aren’t we all a bit............................. Linda I thought it was extremely well written, where every word counted, and managed to create a real atmosphere of Russia, (as I imagine it) with the contrast between the well-off foreign bureaucrats and the much more poverty striken inhabitants. There was a well-crafted sense of something not being right most of the way through, and although none of the characters were likeable individuals, I did care about what happened to them. I don't think we know whether he remained with the fiancée/p a r t n e r a f t e r b a r i n g a l l , d o w e ? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . P a u l a A drab and dreary story with a very atmospheric picture of modern Russia. It tells of statewide corruption and seediness which seems to follow the fall of a communist country. Nick, a British lawyer working in Moscow, is very easily seduced by Marsha. I thought he was a very weak character and deserved to lose his high flying job and be forced to return to England. Without doubt the best parts were the vivid descriptions of R u s s i a . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . P a t r i c i a Janet thought the storyline was transparent and was hoping for a twist in the tale which didn’t materialize. She did think that the descriptions of Russia were probably accurate t h o u g h . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . June thought the whole book was brilliant, atmospheric and very descriptive.

We gave it scores of 7 each for the enjoyment of the book and quality of the writing. Pauline

Metheringham Primary School News

2013 seemed to fly past and already we are into the second month of 2014. Is time going faster? Is life so busy that we don’t notice the passage of time? Or, are we just getting older? We have all embraced the New Year and we have all settled down to tackle the changes that are happening in Education in our country.Miss McKenzie’s and Mrs Gillings’ classes enjoyed taking part in VE Day celebrations at the end of their WW2 topic. Pupils dressed as refugees and armed with their gas mask boxes and ration packs, they spent the day in role trying to experience what life was like during these times. Parents joined their children in the afternoon for a VE Day Celebration. Pupils shared their learning with their parents, enjoyed a VE Day street party and took part in some community dancing. The Christmas activities in school were very successful again this year. The Christmas fayre raised enough money to purchase more iPads and covers for our pupils to use to help with their learning. The infant Christmas play ‘The Midwife Crisis’ was very successful and we were all very proud of our younger pupils. There was some excellent acting, dancing and singing and everyone appeared to enjoy taking part in this wonderful performance. The carol service on the last day of term was well attended and it was good to say “thank you” to everyone who has helped our school during the year. The staff choir seemed to go down well with pupils and parents t o o ! Our pupils have been involved in a number of sporting events and more are planned during the next 2 terms. On a rather dull and damp day last December, 32 pupils took part in a cross country running event at PGL in Caythorpe. This was our first time at a cross country event and we were pleased that our team came in 8th out of 13 schools in attendance. Later that week, the pupils and staff took part in Judo taster sessions in school. This term pupils will be taking part in aqua splash events, a bench ball tournament a n d t a g r u g b y f e s t i v a l s . Our Early Years classes are currently working on the topic ‘Up, Up and Away’. Pupils in Mrs

Jones’ and Mrs Ullyatt’s classes have been kite making, cloud painting, visiting the moon and interviewing Buzz Aldrin about his visit to the moon. Pupils have been looking at the film ‘Up’ and across early Years there has been a hunt for the missing Snipe from the story! In Miss Meyerhoff’s and Miss Vrettos’ classes, pupils have been finding out about Amy Johnson and her flight to Australia and about the history of Space. Pupils have been completing a homework project to build aircraft and space rockets and parents will be invited to view the ‘air museum’ once the homework has been handed in. Pupils have also been finding out about the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to help them understand a little more about their 3 school houses, Spitfires, Hurricanes and L a n c a s t e r s . In Lower Key Stage 2, our pupils have been finding out about mountain ranges, in particular the Himalayas and Mount Everest. Pupils will be learning about the physical features of mountains; the people who live and work in mountain environments; the wildlife and plants in the mountains and the weather conditions. They will also be learning about Buddhism in R.E. and will link this to 3D sculpture in art. In Upper Key Stage 2, our pupils are learning about the Aztecs and comparing them to an equivalent era in British history. They will complete map work and be able to locate Mexico and surrounding counties on a map. Pupils will be writing reports about Aztec life after having researched this on the internet. Pupils will also be designing and making Aztec masks in Art and Design and Technology. In March, twenty two of our Year 6 pupils will be heading off to Kingswood Dearne Valley for the annual residential. This visit is a highlight of the Year 6’s final year in Primary School and a great time is usually had by all in attendance. We are all looking forward to the activities and challenges that will be on offer during the residential.
