editor’s ramblingsseptember 2013

Welcome to the re-designed Sudbrooke News, now with a new editor at the helm for the first time in six years following Nick Truscott’s decision to step down.

Nick did a marvellous job in that period, producing 67 editions of the magazine, and we thank him for all his hard work and contribution to the success of the publication and now he can lie back, put his feet up and not ever worry about deadlines and parish council notes again.

I have decided to take the job on and as you will see, I have given the magazine a makeover as I felt it needed a little freshening up and I hope you like the end product.

I have lived in Sudbrooke for a few years now and am a proud family man. But enough about me, get reading the mag... Dom

25 Planning

n a) Repairs to boards – the Play Equipment Inspector had said he would be able to repair the broken boards – cost of materials approximately £70.00.n b) Five-a-side goalposts – it was agreed that goalposts could be painted on the boards. Councillors Stuart Curtis and Bob Waller to organise this.

n The surface was cracking/deteriorating. A material similar to that used at Nettleham play area was suggested and the Clerk would obtain a price.

n The proposed road closure, Church Lane. This closure was estimated as lasting several weeks due to water main replacement. Councillor Bob Waller agreed to act as liaison between contractors and residents in order to minimise disruption.

n a) Consultation – TPO Area Felling licence application – Hallbrook Farm, Sudbrooke. The Parish Council had been advised by the West Lindsey Tree Preservation Officer that the new owner of Sudbrooke Woods and Park Area wanted to carry out maintenance work on the woodland.

The Chairman and Councillor Ian Russell were invited by the Officer to attend, as observers, a meeting between herself and the company contracted to carry out the work and a report given as follows.

‘The meeting had been very informative. The company, UPM Tillhill, has a nationwide presence and reputation for sympathetic treatment of wooded areas. We were informed the work required was to thin out some of the dense tree growth to allow the remaining woodland to improve. Areas such as the ponds have been allowed to become silted up through the high canopy of trees that now grow close to the banks. By removing some of the trees, new lower growth will return and thus encourage wildlife and the ponds to recover their vitality. The overall objective is to revitalise a neglected area.

Because of the nature of the work, Lincolnshire County Council will have to agree to a temporary closure of the footpaths for the protection of the public. The owners of the land are completely within their rights to carry out this work and, if carried out as described, it will enhance the woodland and improve the area for wildlife. The Parish Council is seeking to meet with the new owners to discuss not only the future of the woods, but also the potential development of the greater area of The Park.’

It was agreed that the Tree Preservation Officer be asked to monitor the work whilst it was being carried out.

n b) Central Lincolnshire Site Allocation and Development – Stage 1. It was noted that several potential sites had been suggested for Sudbrooke. Councillor Stuart Curtis would arrange for a Public Meeting to be held at Sudbrooke for the parishes of Sudbrooke, Langworth, Scothern and Greetwell in order that questions could be addressed to members of the Joint Planning Unit.

The Clerk requested that this be purchased for additional storage – a cost of £117 had been quoted by ESPO and one further quote would be obtained. The Clerk was given authority to purchase at the best price.

n The Chairman reported on a letter received from Mike Halliday regarding his organising of Sports Day – proposed for Sunday 22 September. Cllr Stuart Curtis offered help.

n A letter was handed to the Treasurer at this point of the meeting and passed to the Chair to read. The Chair suspended Standing Orders allowing the writer – a resident of the village – to speak. He expressed his concern that the Jubilee Garden was becoming overcrowded with items. Members agreed there were several items in the area, but felt that it was an interesting part of the village and would be added to with the siting of the carved seats and more posts in the future.

n The public were asked to leave the meeting at this point.

parish council reportBrief report of meeting held on July 4, 2013

n Speeding of farm vehicles through village. Concern about the speeding of tractors through the village had been brought to the attention of the Parish Council. This was considered very worrying with the approach of the summer holidays and young children riding their bikes in the village. It was agreed that the situation be closely monitored and discussed further at the next meeting of the Parish Council. In the meantime, if residents had particular concerns the Police should be informed.

n Vandalism at Village Hall/cutting back of hedge fronting hall/consideration of quotation for fencing between Village Hall car park and playing field. The Village Hall has suffered from vandalism during recent months including repeatedly broken waste pipes, continuous large amounts of litter strewn across the car park and vandalism to the tennis courts and play equipment. It was noted that the Police were aware that the car park was a gathering place for youths/vehicles during the evenings.

Members agreed that the hedge to the front of the Hall should be reduced in height to one metre. This will ‘open up’ the car park area.

The erection of a post and rail fence separating the playing field from the car park was also approved. This will include a removable bollard for access to the playing field for emergency vehicles.

n Grant application – Sports Day. Members instructed the Clerk to submit a grant application through the Community Chest Fund for items required/prizes/refreshments for Sports Day.

n Date of next meeting – September 5, 2013 – 7.30pm, Village Hall. All residents very welcome to come along.

LATEST UPATEn Sudbrooke has been very quiet this month, although there have been a number of bicycle thefts in our area, some where bikes have been recovered, but the Police have no idea who they belong to as they are not marked in any way.

Your local neighbourhood policing team can mark your bike and you can also get a bike passport from them. Below is a guide to keeping your bike safe.

How do I store my bike at home?Keep your bike out of sight – more than half of all bikes are taken from the owner’s property. If your bike is stored in a common stairwell...w make sure your door entry system is workingw don’t let strangers into the stairwellw don’t leave the front door wedged openw make sure the back door is lockedw lock your bike with two locks to a secure bannister or ground anchorIf your bike is stored in a shed or garage...w keep the door lockedw fit a good quality padlock to the door, using non-return screwsw cover windows with old curtains and fit wire mesh insidew install a shed/garage alarmw lock your bike with two locks to a ground anchor

How do I protect my bike? There are some simple steps you can take to significantly reduce the risk of your bike being stolen:w get a good bike lock (D-locks, thick cable locks or combination locks are the most secure) – look for Sold Secure Ltd approved locks, or ask the bike shop for a recommendationw take removable fittings with youw always secure both the frame and wheels to an immovable object, such as a bike rack or treew consider having your bike security-marked or engravedw photograph your bike, take down all your bike details in the bike passport and keep it in a safe placew find and note your bike serial number – usually on crankshaft, underneath pedalsw insure your bike, either on contents insurance or separatelyw vary your routine: lock up your bike in different ways and placesw lock your bike every time you leave it, even for a few minutes, don’t lose itw ideally, use two different types of locks – a thief will need more tools to steal itw think about where you leave it: lock in a busy, well-lit place, in view of other people or CCTV camerasw make the bike and lock hard to move when parked

ellison boultersschool report

With Anna and niamh

scarborough residentialn Lights, Camera, Action! During the extraordinary summer term at Ellison Boulters there is never a dull moment. You are either running, singing, acting, jumping, boating, dancing. You name it, we do it!

In June, a bus load of excited year six children went to Scarborough for a four-day residential. While there, they tried orienteering in the picturesque Dalby Forest and built shelters that would protect us from the elements, at least that was our intention!

A day’s geocaching was undertaken in the North York Moors and after rushing around in a bid to find the hidden treasures first, a relaxing afternoon was then spent learning about wool and its uses and creating a beautiful God’s Eye.

Finally, we visited the awesome John Bull Rock Factory and rolled the hugest sticks of rock you have ever seen. This, and the copious amounts of sweets stashed in our pockets, made the journey home nice and quiet for the teachers!

sports dayn After recovering from our Scarborough trip, we were poised for this year’s sports day. With each house – Spitfire, Lancaster, Hurricane and Tornado – each determined to win, the competition was stiff.

Every pupil in Key Stage Two fought hard for their team and finally, Spitfire proudly pocketed their first win in several years.

school playn As other schools began to unwind for the

summer, we were still in full swing as Upper School’s production of Beauty and The Beast was rehearsed and performed, three times!

With cracking costumes, sensational stage stars and melodic music, the show was a hit. The audience was WOWED by the talent of the school children and the final performance brought both cheers and tears and special memories that will last forever.

talent shown After another great team effort, there was still plenty more fun in store. The Talent Show was ably presented by a posse of year six girls, while ‘The Gentlemen’ of year six performed a hilarious montage of dances dressed in… onesies! It had to be seen to be believed!

Georgina and Jemima sung harmoniously together and brought a tear to all the teachers’ eyes, while George showed us once more what a talented guitarist he is as he sung and danced across the stage and rocked the crowd.

end oF schooln Leavers’ Assembly ended the year and was a fabulous tribute to the efforts of the Class of 2013 – an inevitably sad, but special occasion which demonstrated the hard work undertaken by the children, with many achievements being made academically, musically, physically and in many other ways.

And so, the end is here. We may be tired, but our pride outweighs this and we leave with many special memories. Our journey has been amazing! Farewell EB!

SPORTS AND FUN DAYn It’s that time of the year again, when the Sudbrooke residents, young and old, slip on their athlete vests and lycra shorts, and don their running spikes, as they prepare to pit their agility, speed and endurance against other villagers on the hallowed playing field turf.

Okay, so it’s not that serious just a bit of fun on a (hopefully) sunny afternoon, but what a great way to escape the washing-up after your Sunday roast and meet a few of your fellow residents in a friendly environment.

Hey, you may even burn off a few calories in the process! We shall be giving away prizes to those competitors

who come in first, second or third, but taking part and having fun is really what matters. So make sure you come armed with a smile on your face and even if the old legs won’t move as they once did or you don’t feel up to it, come down and be a cheering spectator instead.

You will see from the programme, on page 11, that there are events to suit all ages and abilities from pre-school to centenarians.

We shall also have some new sports equipment to try out, so do please make an effort to turn up early.

Proceedings get underway at 2.30, while the village hall will be open for drinks and refreshments at 2pm.

reader’s letterYour correspondence

Dear Editor,Am I the only one sick and tired at seeing a distinct lack of manners and grace in the world today?

It happens so frequently that it seems to becoming a habit that is spreading like the proverbial wildfire.

only the other day I was entering a shop in Lincoln and there was a gentleman coming out at the same time, so I held the door open

for him to let him out, but did I get a thank you? did I heck as like. Not a murmur of gratitude, a nod of the head, a doff of the cap, zilch.

It happens with car drivers, you flag them them through a space and half the time, you get no acknowledgement. It drives me mad.

do any other Sudbrooke residents get fed up with this like me? I would love to know.

Walk leader John Whitaker provided a helpful commentary on the various birds, wildlife and flowers to be seen in abundance in the reserve. The Bee orchid was the rarest flower on view.

After the walk, a splendid meal of fish and chips was enjoyed by all walkers in a local Saltfleet restaurant.

who are we?n Sudbrooke kickboxing class meets every thursday evening at the Village Hall.

We have two classes – the first starts at 5pm and is aimed at the younger children. This is a light class aimed at the specific abilities of the child, with an element of fun and some games.

The second class starts at 6pm and is aimed at the older child and adults – this class has a higher workload and is aimed

at the more serious kickboxer. Kickboxing is a very dynamic action sport and in our classes, students are also taught an element of self-defence, which with the techniques of kickboxing, gives our members a great feeling of personal safety and confidence.

Should you be interested in becoming a member please come along to the classes on a Thursday evening or call club coach Tim Greaves.

cherry willinghamn Did you know one of the most vibrant sports clubs in the area meet every Thursday night just down the road at Cherry Willingham Community School?

Lincoln Cannons Volleyball Club re-located to Cherry from their original Lincoln College home a couple of years ago and have gone from strength to strength since then under head coach Navaz Sutton.

SUcceSSeSn Cannons recently regained their Lincolnshire League title, in what was a double-winning season as they also lifted the Cup (a feat they last achieved in 2009-10), while the Lynx men’s side finished runners-up in the East Midlands League Division One, with the Leopards also enjoying a fine campaign in the East Midlands Womens League.

We also send teams to tournaments around the country, including the Bridlington Beach Tournament, York Volleyfest, the Cambridge Grass Tournament and RAF Festival of Volleyball.

The club has had some young players represented on the international stage, while

With Nick Cornwell-Smith01522 753689 – 25th Lincoln (Scothern) Scout Group

POACHER 2013n During the first week of the school holidays, over 4000 young people and 2000 older people camped at the Lincolnshire Showground. Why?

To take part in the International Scout and Guide Camp organised by the scouts and guides inLincolnshire. This event usually takes place every four years, but because some large sporting event happened last year, it was delayed 12 months.

We, the 25th Lincoln (Scothern) Scout Group, decided over a year ago to attend. Eighteen scouts and cubs camped for the whole week, supported by eight leaders giving up a precious week of their holidays.

As well as the campers, Monday saw 18 beavers and cubs attend the Taster Day.

There were scouts and guides from all over the United Kingdom, as well as locals from Welton and Nettleham.

There were overseas visitors from Norway, Russia, USA, Canada, Hong Kong and even Australia.

After setting up camp on Saturday and the official opening ceremony followed by a disco, sleep was a bit sparse. Sunday saw the start of the activities. Our scouts and cubs

went off and sailed, climbed, made crafts, shot air-rifles, catapults and arrows, swam, canoed, zip-wired, and many more things.

There were enough activities to please everyone, though the high

winds curtailed the parascending until the

end of the week.Our Sub-Camp –

Toybox – organised a number of activities, but the climax was the

building of a giant game of Mousetrap. Each unit

had to build a section which when all assembled together would create a chain-reaction machine. Our section, designed by the scouts, was second in line and performed magnificently. Eventually the trap was sprung at the far end, with a little nudge here and there.

By the Friday everyone was tired, suntanned, and Poachered-out. The finale after the closing ceremony was a tremendous firework display which was seen for miles around.

Despite a bit of rain on Wednesday – we missed the heavy downpours which hit Sudbrooke that evening – we managed to stay dry and so packing up camp on the Saturday morning went very well.

A big thank you to all who helped at the camp – Akela, Kestrel, Hannah, Andrew, Grant, Faye, Lewis.

JULY MEETINGn A wonderful day out was had at Grimsthorpe Castle, near Bourne. Members and guests were warmly greeted and the programme ranperfectly, starting with the guided tour of the castle.

The castle holds many precious treasures and it was interesting to hear how the Willoughby de Eresby family have managed to stay close to the monarchy throughout the last 500 years.

After a pleasant lunch, the head gardener and his deputy took us on a two-mile walk around the gardens and buildings on the estate, which proved most informative and very entertaining.

AUGUST MEETINGn Members were treated to viewing two

gardens that provided an interesting contrast in gardening styles.

Jenny Williams hosted the meeting and her front and side gardens are set mostly to manicured lawns, with small areas for shrubs, pebbles and pots.

The rear garden has a good balance of small trees and shrubs with colour from potted grasses, different varieties of heuchera plants and hydrangeas in full bloom.

The front garden of co-hosts John and Iris Whitaker cleverly combines striking flowers such as rudbeckia, lillies, begonias and dahlias, with the more subtle shades of conifers and other evergreen plants.

The side garden and greenhouse provide a splendid collection of fruit and vegetable plants, while the rear has paths and tiered walls to seating areas with lots of plants to encourage wildlife.

THE AGMn Treasurer Barry Reeves presented the balance sheet that was adopted by members and the rules for the Autumn show were agreed.

Serving officers were re-elected as follows: George Preece as chairman; Barry Reeves as treasure; and Mike Halliday as secretary.

A lively quiz was won by the team of Coral and Paul Evans, Margaret and Barry Reeves and Iris Whitaker.

LAST TWO MEETINGSn At our last two get-togethers, we have had a great time at the Camera Club. Our outing at Goltho Gardens was a great success, with a dozen members equipped with their cameras and tripods snapping the colourful flowers on display in the gardens.

At our last meeting, which was held in the clubroom at Dunholme, the members were asked to bring three of “their favourite digital images” – these were viewed by all of the members and each member gave the image a score and at the end of the evening the first second and third-placed members were announced. PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEARn Now on to September (can’t quite believe that September is upon us already) and we have the usual two meetings this month with the first being on the fifth, when we will be holding our fourth Photographer of the Year competition.

This time the title is “A Blot on the Landscape”. All of our competitions this year were based on film titles and this month’s, of

course, is a landscape competition so we should see some great images from the members as we have had a great summer to get out with the camera.

I’m sure you will all have seen the fields full of poppies earlier in the year and we don’t have to go too far before we are in the rolling Wolds so I’m sure we will see some stunning pictures on the night.

Our second meeting of the month on the 19th will be a learning evening. We have a lady coming in to give us a talk on “Photoshop”. Erica Oram will be explain how to get the most out of Photoshop Elements, which is the leading software for tweaking and enhancing your images.

Although some prefer not to “mess” with their images, these types of programmes for the computer just brighten, sharpen and give that little bit more life to your pictures.

So if you are half interested in joining us on the night either get in touch or just turn up. All meetings start at 7.30 pm at the Old School, Dunholme. See you there! Check out our website at www.dunholmecameraclub.co.uk for more information.

Before returning home we stopped off at the Lakeside centre.

If you would like to become a member you have to be over 55 years of age and it will cost £5 per year in subscriptions plus £1.20 each meeting.

This not only gives you all the activities each fortnight, but gives you subsidised outings during the year.

what we are aboutn Sudbrooke has an active Ladies’ Club, which was formed about 20 years ago. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the Bramham Lounge at the Village Hall.

We have a guest speaker at most meetings covering a variety of topics. You are all welcome to attend any meeting which you feel is of particular interest.

Are you new to Sudbrooke? Visitors and new members are always welcome and are asked to make a donation of £2. Why not come along and have a chat?

lateSt meetingn We welcomed Mick Duffield from Lincoln Community Larder to our June meeting.

The Community Larder was established in 1989 and is now run by nine volunteers.Referrals are received from local agencies such as Addaction, NACRO, CAB, Social

Services, Health Visitors, YMCA and Framework. Referees are asked what they are doing to remedy the situation as the food parcels are intended as emergency relief.

The Larder issues a food parcel which provides three meals a day for three days and the recipients have some choice in the food which is provided for them.

Donations are received from companies, individuals and boxes in some churches. There is a box in Scothern church for food donations.

Companies which donate food include Branston Potatoes, Sainsbury’s and Walkers’ crisps.

Demand for food parcels has doubled in the last five years and the club was pleased to donate a large amount of food given by members.

lives fiRstRespondeRs

WHO ARE WE?n Sudbrooke LIVES First Responders Group was established in 2009 to offer emergency care and basic life support in Stainton, Scothern, Langworth and Sudbrooke.

A Responder may be called out when you dial 999 in an emergency. This means life-saving treatment can begin before a paramedic arrives.

We currently have eight qualified Responders and we are always seeking new members to train as Responders. You can apply if you are aged 18 or over and able to drive. There is no fixed commitment. The on-call system is very flexible and you will be welcome if you have just a few hours a month to help your community. Full training and support is provided.

lOcAl suppORt n We are very grateful to iGas who have recently donated £6,000 from their Communities Fund. This has been used to buy more sets of kit and training kit. This

means more Responders can be on call and will save time transporting the kit.

The extra training kit is also used for demonstrations when the group attends fetes and gives talks.

Thanks also go to local businesses that hold our collecting tins. These are an essential part of the fundraising which keeps the group going and helps to pay for training and equipment.

Donations from local community groups are also most welcome. We are grateful to The Bottle and Glass and Lakeside for the use of a room for our meetings. The group can also provide First Aid cover for events in the community.

If you need First Aid cover for your event please contact the Co-ordinator.

If you feel able to support the group in any way please contact Mike Johnson, co-ordinator, on 01522 750878.

INTRODUCTIONn I thought it might be worth taking a moment to introduce myself and say ‘hello’!

You will be aware that Revd Robert Spaight has now retired from his ministry in the Barlings Group of Churches. It has been known for some time that I will take on responsibility for the churches in the group with immediate effect.

Initially this is an ‘informal’ arrangement – however, at some point in the future (hopefully before Christmas), I expect to be licenced as the incumbent.

I have been in the area for three years as Priest in Charge of South Lawres. This comprises the churches in Cherry Willingham, Greetwell, Reepham and Fiskerton. However, I have lived in Lincolnshire since 1980, coming to the county from Nottinghamshire to teach at

Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School. My background is in education, however, I was ordained in 2006 and served initially in Boston, before returning to the Lincoln area. Outside of church matters, I love sport (more as a spectator these days!), live theatre and music, film and ‘the Great British Bake Off! (also as a spectator!)

I hope to spend some time in September wandering around the parishes and meeting people where I can.

Responsibility for eight churches will provide its challenges, but I am well supported by the Revd Sue Bradley and the Revd Carol Bason, along with existing lay ministers in the group. We will do our best to serve you and to work together with Christians from other churches in the area to share the love of God with whoever we can.

I look forward to meeting you.

PROFESSIONAL CHIMNEY SWEEPINGn The young birds should have fledged and the nest should now be abandoned or only used as a roost – your sweep will be busy with removing nests and sweeping chimneys of customers preparing for the next burning season.

If you were unfortunate enough to have had a nest built and the sweep is due to you, don’t be alarmed if you’re asked to cover your furniture, TV, carpet and any items close to the fireplace during the sweep’s visit.

It’s particularly difficult to control the removal of nests from a chimney – it’s likely to be very dusty and as large nests are particularly difficult to remove it is best to be well prepared!

You are at increased risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if your flue is blocked so don’t let it happen again. Your sweep should

be able to recommend cages and cowls suitable for your fire type and appliance requirements.

In the last few weeks of the summer holidays, beat the rush and book your chimney sweep.

It’s a great time for your sweep to complete any roof-based work – the weather later in the year means it’s not much fun to be on the roof then.

Sadly, this time of year is when the less professional chimney sweeps appear in your local papers.

We encourage you to take care – a sweep who practices year round will have the skill and ability to sweep chimneys; someone just doing it for a few months of the year as a hobby may not.

Using a committed, trained professional may just help reduce your risk of a chimney fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

welton & district patients and doctors association

latest update, with Janet GoddardAUTUMN FAYREn The Autumn Fayre is to be held on Saturday 12, October in Welton Village Hall commencing at 2pm.

Tables have now been allocated for sale of goods. We had a huge response from people wanting to hire a table and hope that those who were not successful this year will try again next year and that they will still come along to support us on the day anyway.

Donations are still needed for the bric-a-brac tables so please clear out your drawers and cupboards and have a general de-clutter for a good cause.

We already have lots of books for the book stall, but would still welcome some more. Come along and have a browse. Books will be priced at 20p for paperbacks and 50p for hardback. We would always consider a deal if you wanted to buy in bulk.

We are still looking for tombola items, items for the bottle and glass tombola and any ‘in date’ grocery items for ‘guess the value of the shopping trolley contents’. Please let me know if you need anything collecting or alternatively, items can be delivered to Welton Village Hall from 9am on the morning of the 12th.

Items can also be left at the Health Centre or with any driver if you are using our transport service.

Donations for the cake stall, on the day, would also be very welcome so come along all you Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood fans

– get baking! Raffle tickets are now available (finally) from the Health Centre Dispensary, Taylors Pet Foods in Welton, Welton paper shop, Essential Looks, Dunholme or any PDA driver. We are also hoping to be selling at the flu injection clinics and at Welton Co-op, so look out for us towards the end of Septem-ber/ beginning of October

We have some new games of luck and skill including a lucky draw with a prize every time and a target shooting game, which is suitable for young and old alike! There will also be a plant sale for those of you with green fingers

AGMn The speaker at the AGM on Thursday 24, October will be Dr Nellist with a topic yet to be decided.

I am sure that whatever she chooses to speak about it, it will be an interesting topic and an enjoyable evening.

When I contact patients, to confirm transport bookings, I am often asked ‘when can I meet you?’ or ‘it would be nice to put a face to the voice?’.

Well, I’m not sure about the latter, but I do know that the AGM would be an ideal time to meet the people, myself included, behind the workings of the PDA. Please come along and give us your support!

The evening starts at 7.30pm and usually lasts a couple of hours. We would love to see you there.

open surgery changes from sep 2n no open surgery from 11-12 after friday 30, august!

Following on from last month’s information, a reminder that open access surgery times change with effect from Monday 2, September to 8.30-9.00am.

Anyone presenting between those times will be seen in the open surgery by a GP or Nurse Practitioner, and patients presenting later will be either offered an appointment slot or contacted by the doctor to call if the condition is considered urgent.

There will be a dedicated booking-in desk in the waiting room for patients attending open access surgery.

Open access surgery is intended for acute problems and not routine reviews. Please help us to improve our system by booking an appointment with the appropriate person if

you know you require a routine review of your condition. Booked appointments will be available later each morning in addition to bookable telephone consultations. Please check with our reception staff if you are unsure about any aspect of the service.

We will be collecting information from patients who wish to sign up to the online booking system during the next few weeks – this will allow round-the-clock online access to appointments for patients to book into. Forms will be available soon from reception.

Appointments may be booked up to four weeks ahead and we would appreciate general enquiries after 9am where possible.

We welcome all feedback about these changes so that we can continue to monitor and improve our services. Please use our Suggestion Box and let us know what you think.

nettleham medical practice& cherry willingham branch surgery

latest update, with linda madeley01522 596422

Flu Vaccinations Programmen We hope to commence our flu campaign towards the end of September. Following the continual success of our Saturday morning flu clinics, we shall again be running our clinics on various Saturday mornings throughout October at both Nettleham and Cherry Willingham surgeries.

We will be providing limited Thursday evening clinics at Nettleham for those who genuinely cannot attend on a Saturday. Vaccination is available for patients who fit one of the criteria listed below:w Aged 65 or overw Have chronic heart diseasew Have chronic respiratory disease (including Asthma when regularly using an inhaled steroid)w Have chronic liver diseasew Have chronic renal diseasew Have diabetesw Have suppressed immune systemsw Are a carerw Have multiple aclerosisw Currently pregnant Please contact either surgery from the beginning of September to book an appointment in one of the flu clinics.

There is no need to wait until you receive a letter. If you fit into one of the criteria, contact the surgery to make an appointment.

neW sHingles Vaccinen From September 2013, there will be a new national shingles immunisation programme, for people aged 70 years old, and a ‘catch-

up’ programme will commence. This year’s ‘catch up’ will include anyone who is 79 (born Sep 1933-Sep 1934 incl.).

It is not currently recommended for adults aged 80 and above, as the efficiency of the vaccine is reduced in this age group.

Shingles is caused by the re-activation of the chicken-pox (varicella) virus, sometimes decades after the initial infection. It can occur at any age, but is most common in older people. The severity also increases with age, and it can lead to on going nerve pain (post hepetic neuralgia).

The vaccine helps to prevent shingles and reduces the painful after-effects. It is a one-dose injection, usually given in the upper arm. It can be given regardless of having had shingles before.

If you are entitled to this vaccine this year, you will be sent an invitation from the surgery.

Due to limited supply, you will not yet be able to have the vaccine if you are not in the current age groups. However, the ‘catch up’ will be rolled out, eventually to include all 70-79 year olds.

Some people may not be able to have the vaccine, due to it being a ‘live’ vaccine. This will include people who have reduced immunity due to certain medical conditions or specific medications. Your doctor can advise you if you should not have the vaccine.

We are hoping to provide short weekly singles sessions at both surgeries, and some Saturday morning clinics. We will not be able to give this vaccine at the same time as your annual flu jab.
