is no longer in existence,” Sir Desmond de Silvasaid.He noted that the Paranagama Commission, inaddition , had the advantage of having the advice

of one of the mostdistinguished Generals fromthe British Army as to theevents that unfolded at the endof the war in May 2009.SirDesmond de Silva said that it ishard to see any otherCommission that has had sucha wealth of advice to assist iton in coming to its conclusions.Earlier some concerns hadbeen raised over the credibilityof the Advisory Council whichwas appointed by former

( ) The second interim report of thePresidential Commission to Inquire intoComplaints on Missing Persons will be handedover to President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday,by Commission Chairman Maxwel Paranagama.Meanwhile, a highly placed diplomatic source toldDaily Mirror the government should present theParanagama Commission report in Geneva tocounter the allegations levelled at the Sri Lankagovernment and the armed forces personnel bypro-LTTE groups.Mr. Paranagama said the firstinterim report was handed over tothe President on April, 10 and thatthe government had taken steps toimplement its recommendations.The three-member Commissionappointed by former PresidentMahinda Rajapaksa on August 15,2013 was mandated to Inquire into Complaints onMissing Persons and ascertain their fate,responsibility and whereabouts from 1983 to May2009 and to ascertain the crimes allegedlycommitted during the last stages of the war with aview to accountability and responsibility.“We handed over the First Mandated InterimReport in April and the Second Mandated InterimReport will be handed over to President Sirisenaon Friday. It will mainly deal with the issues of theviolation of the International Humanitarian Law orWar Crimes allegedly committed by bothparties and the recommendations toprevent a repetition,” Mr. Paranagamasaid.For the second mandate theCommission was advised by a panel offoreign experts including Sir DesmondDe Silva.However, it is learnt that certain groupshad petitioned President Sirisenaagainst Sir Desmond De Silva todiscredit him and the ParanagamaCommission.The Commission conducted publicsittings in Kilinochchi (twice), Jaffna,Mullaitivu (twice), Batticaloa (twice),Mannar, Vavuniya, Trincomalee (twice)and Ampara. The Commission hadreceived in excess of 20,106 complaintsinclusive of about 5,200 complaints fromthe relatives of missing security forcespersonnel.The Commission had heard oralevidence on nearly 1,440 complainantsduring public sittings in Northern andEastern provinces.

Mr. Paranagama said the suspects named beforethe Commission during the public hearings hadbeen referred to the Attorney General forappropriate action.The Commission has said that at least fourdifferent groups including Sri Lanka's securityforces and the LTTE were responsible for thedisappearances of hundreds of persons duringthe war against the rebel group.The interim report reveals that the LTTE was

responsible for 60% of the forceddisappearances in the North whilethe security forces were responsiblefor 30%. Other armed groups hadbeen responsible for the rest."Based on the inquiries conductedthus far, accountability andresponsibility by these parties varyfrom district to district," the report

said.The evidence on these complainants wereanalyzed for further investigations through anindependent investigative team. On reportedcases of disappearances and abductions bysecurity forces, the Commission has reportedthem to the attorney general for appropriateaction.Other members of the Commission are D.B.P.Suranjan Vidyaratne and Mano Ramanathan.(Sandun A Jayasekera)

other local government politiciansof then ruling UPFA had openedfire at the supporters who weresetting up the stage for a finalcampaign rally.Three people were injured in theshooting and one of the threevictims, Shantha Dodanagoda was criticallyinjured and succumbed to his injuries three dayslater.However Jayasekara was elected to theparliament at the General Elections held on 17thAugust wining the highest number of preferentialvotes among the UPFA candidates in RatnapuraDistrict.

by Ranil Wijayapala(sundayobserver.lk) The Financial CrimeInvestigations Division (FCID) is tipped to arrestseveral politicians and top government officials inthe next few days, for alleged financial frauds, topgovernment sources told the Sunday Observer.The FCID, on the request of the Commissioner ofElections temporarily halted its process ofsummoning politicians, who were candidates atthe August 17 parliamentary election, to recordstatements as it would have proveddisadvantageous in the run up to an election.“The FCID has commenced recording statementsfrom those politicians by summoning them to theFCID,” Police spokesman ASP RuwanGunasekara said.The Sunday Observer learns the FCID hassufficient evidence to arrest some politiciansallegedly involved in financial frauds and areready to make several arrests in the coming days.According to sources, the FCID has alreadycompleted investigations on an alleged land dealby Western Province Chief Minister PrasannaRanatunga who has been elected to Parliamentfrom the UPFA, with over 300,000 preferentialvotes.Top sources also said, preliminary informationhas been submitted to the FCID relating to thedistribution of sil redi among Buddhist devoteesduring elections using State funds. In thisconnection, former Presidential Secretary LalithWeeratunga and Chairman, TelecommunicationRegulatory Commission (TRC), Anusha Pelpita,are expected to be further questioned.The FCID did not make any arrests in this regardbut has completed its investigations and the nextsteps are inevitable, FCID sources said.The investigation into the release of Rs.5 millionto ‘Tharunyayata Hetak’ organization for‘awareness creation regarding capital markets’ bythe Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC)has concluded. According to the sources, the topthree implicated in the investigations are formerSEC Chairman Nalaka Godahewa, its DeputyDirector General Dhammika Perera and a topofficial of the Tharunyayata Hetak organization,sources added.The FCID has also completed investigationsinvolving former Minister Anura PriyadarshanaYapa for alleged misuse of Ceylon PetroleumCorporation (CPC) funds to buy goods from theCooperative Wholesale Establishment(CWE) tobe distributed among the voters during anelection campaign.“Due to the election, it was not possible to carryforward several investigations and also to takeaction with regard to the offenders linked toinvestigations already concluded. Now that theelection is over, there is every intention tocomplete investigations and take action againstwrongdoers, where investigations have beenconcluded,” the source added.

( ) This week, Verité Researchpresents Part 4 of a 12-part series presentingexcerpts of its recent study on the Lessons Learntand Reconciliations Commission (LLRC). Theseries will present the implementation status ofLLRC recommendations under 11 thematiccategories, and conclude with an analysis of theoverall implementation status of LLRCrecommendations.The present article reviews theimplementation ofrecommendations on detentionpolicy.Status of ImplementationDuring its public sittings, the LLRC heardnumerous representations regarding the fate ofdetainees. Witnesses before the Commissioncomplained about the difficulty in accessing placesof detention, the situation of young detainees, anduncertainty over the whereabouts of those takeninto custody – particularly those who voluntarilysurrendered to the military. In its report, the LLRCpresented 18 recommendations on detentionpolicy. These dealt with the welfare of personstaken into custody, the rights of families to accessplaces of detention, and the release andrehabilitation of young detainees. The LLRC alsomade a number of recommendations regardingdetention procedures, such as issuing formalreceipts of arrest, producing an arrested personpromptly before a Magistrate, and detainingpersons only at formally designated places ofdetention.Out of the 18 recommendations, 11 were fullyincluded in the government’s National Plan ofAction to Implement the LLRC’sRecommendations (NPA). As at January 2015,four recommendations, mainly dealing with theissue of young detainees, had been fullyimplemented. Three recommendations hadmade partial progress in implementation, andeight had made poor progress. Meanwhile, as atJanuary 2015, three LLRC recommendations ondetention policy had made no progress inimplementation. For example, therecommendation on ensuring the safety andsecurity of those in custody was neither includedin the NPA nor implemented to any degree. Anumber of deaths while in custody took place evenafter the release of the LLRC report, which clearlyindicated the lack of a proper mechanism toensure the safety and security of those indetention.Recent DevelopmentsThe precise status of persons taken into custodyduring the war – particularly during its final stages– remains uncertain. Citing the CommissionerGeneral of Rehabilitation, the LLRC report statedthat out of the approximately 11,900 former LTTEcombatants detained, 2,727 remained in custodyas at September 2011.In February 2015, Prime Minister RanilWickremesinghe stated that a list of detainees hadbeen compiled, which would be finalised by Marchthis year. However, according to media reports,the President had asserted thereafter that no suchlist existed. Meanwhile, Minister of JusticeWijeydasa Rajapakshe has dismissed claims thatthe government is in the midst of negotiations torelease political prisoners, a majority of whom areethnic Tamils. According to statistics reportedlyprovided by the Ministry of Justice, 54 individualswere convicted for their involvement in terroristactivity, indictments were being prepared in thecase of 85 persons, cases were pending against134 persons, eight were granted bail, and 45 were

rehabilitated and released.Arbitrary detentionMeanwhile, the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA)continues to remain in force. The sweepingpowers of arrest and detention granted by the Actallow law enforcement authorities to circumventnumerous existing safeguards against arbitraryand prolonged detention. Thus the PTA has a

direct bearing on the implementation ofLLRC recommendations on detentionpolicy. For example, the PTA allows thepolice to detain suspects at anylocation and transfer them from place

to place for the purposes of investigation.Such provisions contravene the LLRC’srecommendation on detaining individuals only inauthorised places of detention. Furthermore, thePTA vests in the Minister of Defence the power toorder the detention of any individual suspected ofbeing connected to unlawful activity for up toeighteen months, in any place or under anyconditions determined by the Minister. Section 10of the Act prevents any court or tribunal fromcalling into question such an order. Hence, sinceits enactment in 1979, the PTA has entrenchedabusive detention practices, effectively authorisingarbitrary detention. A recent judgment of theSupreme Court in October 2014 in fact held that aperson could be arrested and detained under thePTA even if the subsequent indictment was

brought under ordinary penal law. Thus anysuspect may now be detained under the PTA,even if the offence he is eventually charged withhas little to do with acts of terrorism.Despite these major setbacks, BalendranJeyakumari, a campaigner against enforced andinvoluntary disappearances was released on bailin March this year following a year of arbitrarydetention under the PTA. This apparent abuse ofthe PTA has renewed calls for its repeal, and hasostensibly signalled the government’s ability totake positive measures in terms of releasingpolitical prisoners.Immediate OpportunitiesA number of measures can be taken promptly bythe government to further the implementation ofthe LLRC’s recommendations on detention policy.One would be to publish a list of detainees, whichhappens to also be an interim recommendationmade by the LLRC in September 2010. Othersteps include directing law enforcement authoritiesto issue formal receipts of arrest when takingpersons into custody, and instructing Magistratesto conduct monthly visits to places of detention.Moreover, the government could begin a formalprocess to review the continued need for the PTA.These measures will also demonstratecommitment to the normalisation of relationsbetween the state and communities who haveendured harsh detention practices during the past.Such normalisation will contribute towards abroader reconciliation process.Verité Research

A senior official said the matter wouldbe investigated fully.The SLBFE is only an authority in the foreign

employment industry and it does not have amandate to conduct job interviews since this iscarried out by licensed foreign employmentagencies throughout the country, MinistrySecretary W.G. Vithanage told the Sunday Times.“The Ministry is unaware of these developmentsregarding the interviews carried out by the SLBFE.If that has been the case it was not sanctioned bymy office and therefore the matter will beinvestigated soon,” Mr. Vithanage said.SLBFEAdditional General Manager and MediaSpokesperson Mangala Randeniya endorsed theviews of Ministry Secretary Vithanage saying hetoo was unaware of the interviews or where theywere held.The latest development comes as the Italiangovernment authorities are pondering the de-listing of Sri Lanka from the job quota after some400-plus employment visas given to the localauthorities went unaccounted last year and arebelieved to have been sold to individuals for anestimated Rs. 500 million.The alleged scam alsoled to a major re-shuffle in the Italian embassy’snon-diplomatic staff attached to the visa andsupporting sections.Senior officials at the Italian Embassy were notavailable for comment and email questions fromthe Sunday Times remain unanswered

(sundaytimes.lk) More than half a million voteswere rejected at Monday’s parliamentaryelections mainly due to the lack of awarenessamong voters on the complicated voting processand a large number of candidates, most of whomwere from independent groups, an official said.He said 517,123 or 4.42 percent of the votescast were rejected. In addition, 3.3 million votersof the registered 15 million did not cast theirvotes. Thereby a total of 3.8 million voters or 25percent of the voters were not involved inelecting members to the next Parliament.“Our counting centre officials have informed usthat some of the people had voted for twoparties, while some were confused with thepreferential numbers,” the official said. TheGampaha district recorded the highest number ofrejected votes, with nearly 56,246 of the ballotsgoing waste.

District Secretary Sunil Jayalath, who officiatedas the Returning Officer, said the length of theballot paper, the confusion faced by some votersand the lack of interest shown by others were themajor causes for the rejection of votes.He said the 2 feet-long ballot paper which borethe symbols of the parties and the numerousindependent groups had caused confusionamong many voters.The returning officer had observed that severalpeople had correctly voted for the party but hadmade mistakes in the preferential vote. He saidsome voters had deliberately invalidated theirballots by drawing a cross across the paper whileothers had scribbled some ‘opinion’ on theballots.Colombo’s District Secretary Kamal Pathmasirisaid the district’s 43,372 rejected votes were

( ) The United States has said todaythat it wants to sponsor a resolution at nextmonth’s U.N. human rights session that issupportive of Sri Lanka’s government, which wantsto conduct its own investigation into alleged warcrimes, according to a report by AP. The reportquoted the announcement by the visiting AssistantSecretary of State Nisha Biswal of a jointresolution with the Sri Lankan government. “TheU.S has announced it will be offering a resolutionat the September session of the Human Rights

Council. It will be a resolution of collaboration withthe government of Sri Lanka and with other keystake holders,” she was quoted as saying in thereport. Biswal said, however, the U.S. nowsupports a local investigation that the new SriLanka government of President MaithripalaSirisena has promised.Biswal did not say what the new resolution wouldcontain, but said it will follow a report by the U.N.Human Rights Council scheduled to be releasednext month.

The United National Party (UNP) today said it hadfinally reached an agreement with the Sri LankaFreedom Party (SLFP) to form a nationalgovernment for two years.UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrama said in amedia statement that an agreement had beenreached after extensive and cordial discussionswith the SLFP. “The ultimate objective of bothparties was to serve the people by moving awayfrom the traditional political culture and ensuringthe betterment of the nation without consideringministries and perks associated with them,” thestatement said. Samarawickrama said both partieshad to make sacrifices in this endeavor.Accordingly he said the new government wouldbuild a new country within 60 months as it was

pledged by the party during elections.This development came despite contemplation bythe UNP to form a government in the event bothparties failed to reach an agreement.Speaking to the Daily Mirror Samarawickrama saidthere will be 30 Ministers initially divided amongthe UNP and the SLFP.However, he said the number of Ministries wouldbe increased with the approval of Parliament asper the 19th Amendment later.He said the House would have a two day debateon September 3 and 4. "Theexisting clauses will remain same. We haveproposed some more additions to it to furtherenhance the cooperation between the two parties.The document will be signed soon after a finalagreement is reached," he observed.He added that discussions were ongoing betweenthe UNP and the SLFP to come to a finalagreement on the allocation of ministries."The new Cabinet ofMinisters would be swornin soon after thesediscussions. Our priorityis to discuss how well thetwo parties can get onwith each other, and howboth parties can worktowards a nationalagenda. The connectionbetween the two partiesmust be consolidated,"he added.Asked whether a round oftalks between the UNPand the SLFP overassigning of ministries failed yesterday,Dissanayake said: "No discussion had failed. Thediscussions are still progressing".According to a highly placed UNP source thesection pertaining to the time-frame of the nationalgovernment is likely to be amended."Presently, the MoU states that the two parties willwork together for a period of two years. However,there are discussions that the time-frame will beamended, allowing parties to pull out of thenational government, at any time. This amendmentis still a suggestion," he said.Commenting on the national government initiative,

the MP-elect said there was no issue on the partof the UNP. "On our side, matters have beenfinalised. It is up to the SLFP to make a finaldecision on the national government," he added.Meanwhile, UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashimtold the Daily News that there would be minoramendments without any change in the basicframework."At the moment the agreement is still on. However,if the SLFP does not support the initiative, we willform a government on our own. We will find theabsolute majority in Parliament," Hashim said.However, several SLFP stalwarts yesterdayexpressed pessimistic views on forming a NationalUnity Government.SLFP MPs-elect Mahinda Amaraweera, LakshmanYapa Abeywardena and Mahinda YapaAbeywardena told the Daily News yesterday that

government."The proposal of the UNP was to increase thenumber of Cabinet Ministers upto 50. However, weare against increasing the number of CabinetMinisters over 40. The ministries should bedistributed in a fair and reasonable manner. TheSLFP cannot receive the left over.The identity of our party must be protected. Thediscussions over assigning the ministries heldbetween the UNP and SLFP representativesAnura Yapa, Nimal Siripala and SusilPremajayantha were not successful.

By Sasini Lelwala'Ridee Rekha', a musical consort between thelegendary Dr Victor Rathnayake and VisharadaSunil Edirisinghe, will be held on the 20th ofSeptember 2015 at 3pm in Birmingham for thevery first time. They will be joined by theprominent music director Suresh Maliyadde andhis combined orchestra from both Sri Lanka and

the UK.

The distinguished Dr Victor Rathnayake startedhis journey from a very young age and wasthe first artist to successfully commit to aone man concert named 'SA'. 'SA' was firstheld in Lumbini Theatre in July 1973. After1450 concerts spanning 39 years of successhome and abroad, Dr Victor Rathnayakeended his concert series in 2012 in LumbiniTheatre, where it all started. During this timehe has won many awards for playbacksinging at many state festivals. His voice isdescribed to be a 'melodic lunacy', 'exquisiteinsanity', and it has crossed all boundariesof class, race and religion as the spellboundaudience became one, humming to 'ApiOkkoma Rajawaru'.Visharada Sunil Edirisinghe meanwhile is acritically acclaimed classical musician and awinner of the presidential award forplayback singing 1983 for 'Maya MiringuvaPiruna Lo Thale' from 'Adhishtanaya' film.He debuted as a playback singer in 1969singing 'Sandhakada Pahana' for hisbrother, Satischandra's film: 'Matara Achchi',the song itself was composed by Dr VictorRathnayake. Sunil studied music atVisharada P.V. Nandasiri's Academy ofMusic and University of Laknaw, India in theearly 1970s. In 1975 Edirisinghe graduatedwith first class honours from the prestigiousBhathkhande Academy of Music in India. In1980 Edirisinghe released his first cassette

'Chandra Mandala'. Today, Sunil Edirisingheremains as one of the renowned vocalist in SriLankan classical music.The Music Director of Ridee Rekha, SureshMaliyadde is one of the youngest and mostexperienced individuals in the Sri Lankan musicfield. by Geethaka FernandoThe 32nd Annual 'Battle Of The Blues - UK' onceagain provided a day of enthralling and nail bitingcricket for the Old Thomians, Old Royalists andtheir families who live in the United Kingdom. TheWalker Cricket Club which boasts of a 160 yearproud cricketing history was this year's venue forthe special occasion. The day was blessed withbright sunshine and a gentle breeze sweepingacross the lush green.The Thomians fielded a very young side this yearagainst a formidable Royal squad which includedmany Sri Lanka U19 players and former Royalcaptains. Having won the previous threeencounters comprehensively, the Thomians werehighly determined to defend the covetedAmersekara Shield again.The Old Royalists' captain Malinda Thotiwilagewon the toss and decided to take the first lease ofthe pitch. The Royal openers, ShashimalEdirisinghe and Chamika Karunaratne, made theirintentions very clear by going after the bowlingright from the outset. However, the openingstand didn't last for too long as a Thomianfielder produced a brilliant stunt to run outShashimal when the score was just 15.This brought Hashen Ramanayake to thecrease who joined his SL U19 and formerRoyal Skipper. This pair put on a brisk 75run partnership in 10 overs dispatching theball to all corners of the Walker Park. At thisstage it seemed as if the game was driftingaway from the Thomians. However, theThomian skipper who is known for histactical nous, made some early changes tobring the spinners in which paid immediatedividends. Sacha Seneviratne made the

crucial breakthrough in his second over bydismissing Chamika Karunaratne for 54. The Royalskipper then joined Hashen and tried to maintainthe momentum by constantly looking to rotate thestrike. However, the tight spells by the spin trio,Vidhesh Balasubramaniyam, ShamiMendis and Hasula Premathilake,and the sharp fielding made surethat the Royalists didn't get to breakthe shackles again.Hashen (42), Malinda (49) andHeshan Morawaka (48) battedsensibly to take the Royal Score upto 235 which still looked a difficult chaseconsidering the recent Royal-Thomian Encounters.The Thomian openers walked into the middle aftera hearty lunch and some uplifting words from theskipper. Their aim was to hold the fort for as longas possible against the fiery pace attack of Royal.The 2013 Big Match centurion, Sanesh De Meland the fresher, Sacha Seneviratne got off to acautious start whilst getting the measure of the

pitch. What followed was one of the finest displaysof batting the 'Roy-Tho' UK fraternity has everwitnessed.Sacha muscled the ball to all parts of the groundwhilst Sanesh rotated the strike by caressing the

ball with a touch of 'Sanga-like'elegance. This meticulously pacedpartnership took the Thomian score upto 143 before Sacha departed in the27th over for a well made 62. Thefireworks recommenced when ShamiMendis joined Sanesh and startedhammering boundaries at will. Shami

revealed the 'maverick' inside his calm-self whenhe stroked a couple of reverse-sweeps whichnearly cost him his wicket. Sanesh reached hismaiden century in the series with a beautifulpaddle sweep down to deep squire-leg.Shouldering the burden of getting the side over theline, captain Mendis also got to his half centurywith a towering six over deep mid-wicket. This pairended this remarkable chase comfortably with

(island.lk) Many have enjoyed Kumar Sangakkara’selegant batting that fetched him 38 Test hundreds.He had been equally impressive at pressconferences talking eloquently on several subjects.Sangakkara spoke to journalists one last time afterhis final Test at P. Sara Oval yesterday.The star batsman touched on a range of subjectsfrom the support he had received from his parents,emotions during his last Test, comparisons with SirDon Bradman and much more.Here are the excerpts.

How did you manage the five days of theTest Match as there was so much emotion aroundyour retirement?Sangakkara: It never hits you until the end comesand you finish the cricket and then you are out theretalking about yourself in the past tense. But thegame itself, preparation as usual was the same. Thefocus and putting the fact that it is my last Testbehind me. The emotion used to come at the end ofthe day, knowing that the countdown had started.But unfortunately, we didn’t play as well as wecould. India played a fantastic game of cricket. Butfrom a personal point of view, I enjoyed everyminute of it even though ending up on the losingside is disappointing. I was very, very glad that Ihave been fortunate enough to play another TestMatch.

There was a banner at the ground thatsaid ‘Our Land, Our Pride’. Now with many greatsretired, is there a danger that Sri Lankan cricket willstruggle in years to come?Sangakkara: That’s in no danger at all. The youngergeneration take their cricket very seriously. Theytake their commitment very seriously and I knowwhen you are in the dressing room, when you lose,you see the disappointment and the hurt. Andwithout a doubt, that will drive them on to do muchbetter. It will take some time for them to find theirfeet, it is a very young team but the way they aregoing about their preparation, their work ethic, theircommitment, no one can fault them for that. Theharder they work, the better they will become for itand I am sure you will see them take Sri Lankacricket farther and higher in future.

What happened today with so manydignitaries and so much of goodwill, is that the mostmemorable day in your cricket?Sangakkara: Ya, it is certainly the most memorable,especially the announcement (by the President).Your last Test, you obviously remember for variousreasons. Special thanks to Mr. Sunil Gavaskar forthose very very kind words. I watched him scorehundreds against West Indies in a hat and a little

cut-out plastic skull cap. And to have a player of hislegendary ability to say what he said, I am verygrateful. Also to everyone who came out andsupported me – the fans, all of you, the teammatesand my family. It is a very memorable Test.

It’s said that Sir Don Bradman wasoverawed by the welcome he received when hecame out to bat in his last Test innings. Apparently,there was tears in his eyes and that he couldn’t seethe ball that dismissed him. Did you encounter asimilar thing?Sangakkara: I think I justcouldn’t see the ball thatAshwin bowled me fourtimes in a row. Every otherball, I saw pretty well. Butthat’s the way it goes. Youcan’t always score runs,that’s always going to be thecase in your career. Andeveryone wants to sign offon a high but unfortunately Icouldn’t score a fifty or ahundred or do it in thatsense. But no, the focus isalways very clear when I goout to bat – it is aboutscoring runs and trying totake the team forward.Unfortunately, mycontribution wasn’t enoughin this game.

A former coachhad suggested that you werein fact a better batsman thanSir Don Bradman himself.Sangakkara: I think he mighthave been joking. I watchedBradman bat on old grainy videos and he wasexceptional. You take any of those great cricketersfrom any era and you put them here with themodern techniques, the modern training methodsand he might have averaged much more. But therewill always be comparisons but I am pretty secure inbeing Kumar and having played the game andachieved what I have in the game.

Talk us through what happened soonafter you were dismissed in your last Test innings?Sangakkara: The moment I got out it was the usualdisappointment and frustration is there, because myjob is to try and stay there till the end of the day. Butwhen I was walking off and all the Indian playerscame and shook my hands that is when it hit me,that’s it really. So going back into the dressing roomand taking the pads off it just hits you that is the last

time you will be doing that in national colours. Thereis a note of finality in that.

Ravichandran Ashwin has picked up 17wickets so far in the series. What were your plans tocounter him?Sangakkara: We talked about players going downthe wicket, trying to sweep but those are at timesplans you have to execute in the first innings, you tryand get ahead of the game. In the second innings, itgets tougher because you are trying to defend. Buthe has the weapons in his armoury to counterattack,

when someone startssweeping you will see himbowl a bit quicker, fuller andstraighter at the stumps.When it turns you will seehim vary his pace and try toget it straighter. His seamposition is fantastic. Heseems to be thinking all thetime. So it is a greatchallenge to play againsthim and it’s interesting tosee how the boys go againsthim in the next Test.Question: You have scoredso many double hundredsand what’s your advice foryoungsters on batting forlonger duration?Sangakkara: It is reallyabout concentration. Gettingyour first hundred is the hardpart, the next one if you batlong enough it comes.Knowing when to accelerateand when to be defensive,most of all knowing how to

break down your concentration. You have toconcentrate eight hours to get a double hundred.You only concentrate on specific deliveries. So thereis a very short time to be able to take your mind offthe ball when you are on the non-striker’s end or inbetween deliveries. So it is something that comesnaturally to some, others learn. It is just a case ofmanaging that.

What are your special moments incricket?Sangakkara: Quite a few special moments. Todaywas always going to be special for a lot of reasons.It was the first time that I had my parents, mychildren, my siblings, and my wife all together at oneplace, watching me play. That is always going to bethe memorable part of my game. My parents havenever made a fuss of anything. They rarely come to

games or see me off during tours. But they keenlyfollow my game. So that has really helped me keepgrounded throughout everything I have gonethrough. Those are the real memorable moments,because once I’m finished, I’ll miss the game, but Iknow I have the security.

You thanked so many people today. Didyou remember all the names?Sangakkara: I forgot to mention my wife andchildren by name. To me when I say my family, it’sall of them. You know my children are six years oldnow but that’s been the highlight of my partnership.She has been amazingly supportive and amazinglytolerant. I’m quite a chaotic person. I’m onlyorganised in my batting. Anything away from that,it’s not easy for her to get me organised, to keep meon track and get my appointments done. But shehas done the most amazing job. Having her andthen she has gifted me amazing children. Like I saidagain, I’m blessed with so much and I’m thankful.Yehali and my children is the best partnership of mylife. So I hope she tolerates me for a few moreyears.

What made you one of the legends of thegame?Sangakkara: Tough (to say). I think it’s in the waymy work ethic changed. I found a bit more aboutmyself, and I found out a way that would work. Itdoesn’t work the same for everyone. But for me itwas a case of working, changing, working, changingand trying to find a formula. More often than not, Iwas fortunate that what I tried worked. I wish therewas a secret like I knew exactly what’s working. Attimes you just don’t know what is working and youkeep doing it. You don’t count the teeth of a gifthorse when it’s running. You change it only whenyou hit a stumbling block and try something new.

Over the years, how have you changedas a person?Sangakkara: I have grown a lot mellow. I was a bitfeisty when I started. Lot more relaxed when itcomes to approaching and preparing for the game. Ihave learnt not to get lost in the game too muchwhen I’m away from it. At the end of the day, youplay an amazing and unique sport, but you’ve got toplay it as a sport. You need to play it with an almostchildish wonder, where you just play and you enjoy.If it doesn’t work, you give up with disappointment,come back and try and enjoy the game. If you havethat attitude and that kind of perception of the game,and I think that’s kind of change in me. I have beenable to let it go and come back with a bit of balance.I don’t know how that happened. It’s a gradualchange.

Who are the bowlers who havechallenged you most?Sangakkara: Ashwin in this series, Zaheer Khan,Graeme Swann – when I’ve played against some ofthese bowlers, I’ve sometimes been unsuccessful.

But you’re always trying to refine your strategy andcome out of that. Wasim Akram is someone I’veplayed only when I was young – thankfully. He’s gotme out once and his bowling style was excellent.Playing against cricketers like this is a big challenge.

Your thoughts on not being able torepresent your country anymore?Sangakkara: I’m sad, but there’s also a joy, becauseplaying cricket everyday is not easy. There is

pressure. There is lots of difficult work. A struggle.Sacrifice. It’s not easy. So if you look at it like that,there is some relief. That pressure and thoseexpectations have been lifted off. But at the sametime, watching cricket is also not easy. That desire isstill there. You have to get used to that. I hope thatnow I’m out of the game, I’ll be able to appreciatethe cricket that is played, and the young cricketerswho are playing it.

What about your lean trot in your lastseries?Sangakkara: Yes, there is disappointment, but that’swhat’s great about cricket. You don’t know what willhappen. You try one thing, and if it doesn’t work, youtry something else. If it works, then you win and arehappy. I’m not too downhearted about it.

(island.lk) The Chief Executive of the InternationalCricket Council (ICC) David Richardson has paidtribute to former Sri Lanka captain KumarSangakkara, who retired from international cricketon Monday.Sangakkara was one of the leading cricketers inworld cricket for the last 15 years during whichplayed in 134 Tests (scoring 12,400 runs, 182catches (131 catches as a wicket-keeper) as wellas 20 stumpings), 404 ODIs (14,234 runs, 402catches (383 as wicket-keeper) and 99stumpings) and 56 T20Is (1,382 runs, 26 catchesas wicket-keeper and 20 stumpings). He also ledSri Lanka in 15 Tests, 45 ODIs and 22 ODIs. Oneof his finest hours came when he inspired SriLanka to the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup in2011.Sangakkara was selected in the ICC Test Team ofthe year on seven occasions – 2006, 2007, 2008,2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 and won theprestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICCCricketer of the Year, as well as the Test Player of

the Year, in Colombo in 2012. What kind of influence your parents had inyou?Sangakkara: Both my parents have had a specialinfluence on my life and my cricket career. It’s thefoundation that they gave me at home that hasbrought me this far in life. At the same time my wifeand my two children – in the last 15, 20 years, theywere right behind me. It’s not something you can doyourself. My family, my friends and everyone hasmade sacrifices, and it’s through that love that I’vebeen able to get where I am. I’m especially thankful tothem.

Your wife has said that you love cooking.Any special dishes that you are good at?Sangakkara: I’d love to cook rice and fish, but I can’tdo that well yet. Yehali doesn’t like me cooking very

much because I make too much of a mess, andthere’s more to be cleaned up. I try to cook what Ican. There’s a lot to learn in future.

What are you going to do after cricket?Sangakkara: I’ll go home and sleep. Then tomorrowI’m going to England. If you’re talking about my future,I have to sit down with my wife and children and figureout what’s best for them. Whether I’m part of cricket ornot, the sport will go forward. It won’t stop. I have agreat responsibility to my family, so I’ll think aboutthem first, before anything else.

You have taken an ambassador role tocampaign against narcotics. A few words on that role?Sangakkara: It’s an important job – to help free theyoung people in the country from drugs. A lot ofpeople have worked very hard, and made a lot ofsacrifices for that. If I can give some support, thenI’m very fortunate. When I look at people who areaddicted, it’s usually young people. It’s great if I cansupport the effort to give them a successful life.

Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy SportsCorrespondent( ) Seven paddlers from the CentralProvince more particularly from schools in Kandywho brought honour to the Province and themotherland by winning medals at the South AsianJunior Table Tennis Championship 2015 held inNew Delhi, India, were felicitated by the KandyDistrict Table Tennis Association (KDTTA) at aglittering ceremony held at the Jagath RajapakseInternational Tennis Stadium in Doluwa.The paddlers who were felicitated were UdayaRanasinghe (Vidyartha College), Prasad de Silva(Vidyartha College), Krishan Wickremaratne(Vidyartha College), Dinesh Kavishka (VidyarthaCollege), Disanka Tennakoon(Dharmaraja College), RidmiKaradanarachchi (Mahamaya GirlsCollege) and Thanushi Rodrigo(Mahamaya Girls College).Sixteen year old Udaya Ranasinghe ofVidyartha College who is the reigningJunior and Senior National singleschampion put up a sterling display towin a gold medal which is a rareachievement by a Sri Lanka.Udaya Ranasinghe who is anextraordinarily talented player has justreturned to the country after a stint oftraining overseas which has done hima world of good and the results ofwhich has been reflected in winning agold medal. The way he is performinghe is a good medal prospect at theSAF Games or even the Asian Gamesthough he will be pitted against playersfrom countries reputed for table tennis.

The other players won silver medals and six silvermedals at a regional championship too is anexcellent performance. Four of these paddlers arefrom Vidyartha College and one from DharmarajaCollege. Two girls from Mahamaya Girls College in14 year old Thanushi Rodrigo and 18 year oldRidmi Karadanarachchi too netted in silvermedals. Buddhika Dikkumbura is the presentcoach of Vidyartha and Mahamaya College and hecould have the satisfaction that his charges hadproduced the results at an Asia event which is thedream of any coach.
