EDITOR’S NOTES By John Dancy

SPRING 2013

Club Membership showed a considerable increase in 2012. Notable changes include Club T-Shirts

as standard fare for new members.

The 28th Annual Fabulous Fords Forever, all Fords show is held this year on Sunday, April 21,

2013. In past years, the Southern California Chapter of The Lincoln Mark VII Club has gathered at

a Denny's restaurant in Buena Park to "carb up" prior to caravanning down highway 39 to Knotts

Berry Farm. This will be the Club’s sixth consecutive showing at the Fabulous Fords Forever

Show. There are regularly over 2000 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles including Ford powered

customs. With the passing of Carroll Shelby in 2012 (see In Memorandum) the "Shelby" team

should once again present plenty of their latest offerings along with some vintage machines;

Always a popular attraction.

Back for another season, Brent and Chris Wilson, the Southern California Chapter Coordinators of

The Lincoln Mark VII Club, released their 2013 schedule. Originally organized by Art and Kathy

Bailey, the Southern California Chapter holds the longest, continuous string of lunches and cruises

in the Club's history; meeting this season every third Saturday of the month.

The 18th Carlisle Ford Nationals is June 7th - 9th, 2013. This is also the East Coast National Meet

for the Club. Held the first weekend of June, the Lincoln Mark VII Club’s Pennsylvania Chapter

has coordinated a Club Tent in the center of the show field since 2006. Your entire Family will

enjoy this huge All-Ford event. Lincoln, Ford, AND Mercury fans will have a showcase of over

2,200 vehicles to check out on the show field. You will also enjoy: indoor displays of concepts,

customs and historically-significant cars and trucks; test drives by Ford Motor Company; a

burnout competition; kids’ activities; industry guests; a car giveaway; NHRA drag racing; autocross

for all skill levels and club gatherings. The excitement continues with a shopping experience you

won’t soon forget, including an enormous swap meet, car corral and the Manufacturers Midway

for the best in parts buying. You don’t even need to bring a Ford to enjoy the event as there is

plenty of satellite parking for your non Ford products.

All of the Club’s Board Members and Chapter Coordinators are volunteers. We love anything

Lincoln Mark VII and dedicate a large portion of our time and resources into bringing this Club to

it’s Members. The Club is currently in need of replacements for the following positions:

Newsletter Editor, Membership Secretary, and Pennsylvania Chapter Coordinator. The

qualifications for these positions can be found on line in the Club’s Charter at

TheLincolnMarkVIIClub.org/documents/forms/TheLincolnMarkVIIClubCharter.pdf

If you are interested in sharing your hobby with hundreds of people world wide and making a

difference in the very future of the remaining Lincoln Mark VIIs globally, contact me directly at

[email protected] These positions can ONLY be filled by Club Members in

good standing at the time of application.

Letters

George Wallace - What is a GTC?

Scott Nonnenman – A GTC or Grand Touring Coupe, is an aftermarket Lincoln Mark VII

produced by C & C Customs.

STAGE 1 GTC:

Package available only on Lincoln Mark VII LSC.

Complete monochromatic paint job in either Midnight Black (code 1R) or Arctic White (code

9L).

Lower body side panels, Extended rear valance panels, Front air dam.

GTC badges (Front fenders, dash, and trunk lock cover)

BBS Cast wheels 16" x 8" These were optional and color coded with white or black centers and

BBS center cap

All these are present on this vehicle. Now in order to tell if it is a Stage "II" we would need to

see if it had the following:

STAGE 2 GTC:

All of the above plus Koni low pressure gas externally adjustable shock absorbers.

New front air springs with revised rates.

Front and Rear stabilizer bars.

Rear axle lateral locating link (pan-hard bar).

Semi-metallic brake pads.

Driver's left foot rest.

Lower vehicle ride height (~ 1")

Goodyear 245/50 VR 16 Eagle tires.

Power steering oil cooler.

ID Plaque w/ owner's name (usually dash mounted).

Though it was never labeled a "Stage 3" the last additional option you could add to a GTC was

having the 302/Auto replaced with a 351W/5 speed/3:45 posi-rear. They also came out with just

the 351W with the automatic....obviously the customer's choice. With the engine/transmission

package you also received both a Water Temp and Oil Pressure guages mounted in the glove

compartment...someone needs to open it and find out when onsite.

I have not heard anyone say anything about the Stage 2 options being present on this car. If

someone goes to see it...bring this list and a camera...Thanks.

Scott (Actual "Stage 2+" GTC owner & webmaster of the official GTC website)

Removal and Service of Driver Air Bag

and Location of Components

CAUTION

Failure to properly disarm and re-arm the system may cause injury to yourself, others and

property.

System Operation

The driver air bag restraint consists of four impact sensors, a control module, a backup power

supply, and the air bag itself. Three of the sensors are located on the front of the radiator core

support and one is located in the driver side interior kick panel. Any two sensors must detect

impact. The system operates in a front impact only. The backup power supply contains a

capacitor to provide detonation of the charge which deploys the airbag should the automobile

battery or wiring be damaged or shorted during a collision.

TECH (continued)

Disassembled back up power supply

Components

A clock spring is used behind the steering wheel as opposed to brushes and rings as in the earlier

models. The cruise control and horn also make electrical connection through this unit. It is a

strand of multi conductor wire wrapped like a “clock spring” within a plastic housing. It winds

and un-winds as the steering wheel is turned so continuous contact is maintained should impact

damage the steering wheel to column interface.

Component Location

As discussed above, the impact sensors are located on the core support and kick panel. The clock

spring is located between the steering wheel and column and steering wheel removal is required

to replace it. The Power back up and control module are located above the glove box door,

attached to the interior of the dash panel. The glove box need not be removed to access these

components.

Servicing the System

Before servicing ANY part of the system, it MUST be disabled for your safety.

First, disconnect the battery.

9

Page 10: - The Lincoln Mark VII Clubthelincolnmarkviiclub.org/documents/newsletter/... · The Lincoln Mark VII Club, released their 2013 schedule. Originally organized by Art and Kathy . Bailey,

TECH (continued)

Next, the back up power supply must be disconnected. Do this by opening the glove box and

squeeze the latches so it may open past the stops and expose the hardware behind it. Look up

into the opening and you will see a duct, which must be partially removed to access the power

backup connector.

Pull down and out on the duct and you will see the blue power back up. Remove the plug. It is a

squeeze type and does not require lifting the hatches, which are such a pain, as on most of the

other connectors. This connector has three wires.

10

Page 11: - The Lincoln Mark VII Clubthelincolnmarkviiclub.org/documents/newsletter/... · The Lincoln Mark VII Club, released their 2013 schedule. Originally organized by Art and Kathy . Bailey,

TECH (continued)

Reach in around the duct and remove the plug from the power supply.

It is now safe to do further disassembly of components.

Removal of Air Bag Restraint Unit

Extreme caution must be exercised when handling the actual air bag itself. Should it deploy

accidentally, you will be injured!

Remove the four 10mm nuts behind the steering wheel.

Lift the air bag away from the steering wheel. Do not sit in the seat while doing this. Stay to the

side in case of accidental deployment.

You can see the connector at this point. (circled in orange)

Disconnect the connector and place the air bag unit in an out of the way space, studs DOWN.

The number of successive flashes of the warning lamp will guide you as to where to start. In my

case, it was five flashes. Consult the manual for diagnostic codes.

TECH (continued)

In many cases, the clock spring is the culprit. I will take you through the process of

troubleshooting the clock spring, but regardless of what you are having a problem with; many of

the following procedures may be of help.

After the air bag itself has been safely removed, re-connect the back up power supply and

connect the battery. I connected a battery charger to keep my battery up during this process.

To troubleshoot the clock spring, it must be checked for continuity. This is accomplished by

inserting a jumper into the harness plug, which would plug into the “now removed” air bag

unit.

14

Page 15: - The Lincoln Mark VII Clubthelincolnmarkviiclub.org/documents/newsletter/... · The Lincoln Mark VII Club, released their 2013 schedule. Originally organized by Art and Kathy . Bailey,

TECH (continued)

The ignition switch was turned on and the warning lamp was observed for codes. Mine still

flashed out a five code.

The next test was to check the connector at the base of the steering column where the pigtails

from the column side of the clock spring connect to the vehicle harness. The panel cover

beneath the steering column must be removed and two gray connectors are visible through the

opening.

15

Page 16: - The Lincoln Mark VII Clubthelincolnmarkviiclub.org/documents/newsletter/... · The Lincoln Mark VII Club, released their 2013 schedule. Originally organized by Art and Kathy . Bailey,

A jumper was installed at the vehicle harness connector and codes were re-checked by again

turning on the ignition.

In my case, when the ignition was turned on again, the warning lamp again flashed a 5 code.

and ignition was again turned on and a 10 code was observed, which

necessary to disconnect the main battery and passenger air bag back up power supply.

As mentioned earlier, the control module is attached to the same bracket as the back up power

supply, however, the duct must be completely removed to reach and remove it. I

16

Page 17: - The Lincoln Mark VII Clubthelincolnmarkviiclub.org/documents/newsletter/... · The Lincoln Mark VII Club, released their 2013 schedule. Originally organized by Art and Kathy . Bailey,

TECH (continued)

The control module was then removed by grasping it and pushing it straight up toward the top

of the vehicle. It snaps out of its metal bracket easily.

After reinstallation of the replacement module, the backup power supply was re-connected, the

harness connector at the lower steering column was re-connected, and the battery was re-

connected. A jumper was installed at the plug behind the air bag unit at the steering wheel, and

the ignition was again turned on.

The warning light came on for two to three seconds and shut off.

Re-installation of the air bag unit was then necessary. The battery must be disconnected again as

is the backup power supply. Re-verify that both of these power sources are disconnected.

Carefully position the air bag unit onto the steering wheel leaving enough room to connect the

harness plug. I used needle nose pliers to connect the harness to keep my fingers out of the area

between the bag and wheel, again in case of accidental deployment causing the bag assembly to

crush my fingers.

18

Page 19: - The Lincoln Mark VII Clubthelincolnmarkviiclub.org/documents/newsletter/... · The Lincoln Mark VII Club, released their 2013 schedule. Originally organized by Art and Kathy . Bailey,

TECH (continued)

After re-attachment of the bag unit to the steering wheel, the backup power supply was re-

connected, followed by the battery. Keeping clear of the air bag, I turned on the ignition switch,

and the warning light glowed for 2-3 seconds and then extinguished.

The ducts and covers were re-installed and the glove box closed. The battery cables were

checked and tightened. This whole process took about two hours, however, I was very thorough

and verified each step, consulting the manual through each step

In as much as you are working with a unit which may cause personal injury, I strongly advise

that you take your time, re-check your work, carefully follow the proper process, and exercise

extreme caution, or don’t do it!

Two Lincoln Mercury Mark 7's VII for sale for one price, 1985 Bill Blas 5.0, 1986 LSC 5.0 H.O. EFI 1500.00 for the pair.

First come first serve. Good engines, ABS units, transmissions, diffs, compressors, name it, they belonged to my late

father, and were sitting in his carport for some time. I humbly apologize to all Mark owners here for the appearance of

them both, but the interior of the 85 Bill Blas is in some ways like new, about 64k on that car, I hate to have the Junkie

take them, too much good stuff to waste! We have sold our country property, and will be moving soon, (tick-toc). The

85 Blas would be an easy project, maybe a weekend or two to be fully operational, the LSC a little longer, or use him for

spares. The will need a car trailer, or a tow truck, I will assist in loading. 1400.00 to the right guy cash in hand, and even

I'll throw in four "really nice" factory aluminum wheels. Give me a call, or a message, and I'll give you the details, these

were not "problem vehicles" before they were parked. Here in the middle of California. 559-798-5430 Cheers, Bob
