by Jim Thompson PEGeneral ManagerEveryone can gain insight from listening to Gerry Kinney. We have all faced some

type of adversity in our lives. Most not to the extent of what Gerry and his family went through. (See our feature story on pages 8 and 9) Several of my employees indicated Gerry’s visit was the best safety meeting we have ever had. You didn’t have to be a lineman. The employees that were not linemen talked about the impact it had on them. Many of our employees met Gerry while taking training classes and working major power outages together. The ones that were familiar with him indicated he was well respected, valued others, and was a true leader, a very genuine individual that came across the same now as he did before the accident. Whenyoureflectonthemessage, it probably touched everyone a little different. You do not focus on what happened to cause such a terrible accident. You focus on how he and his family handled the situation moving forward. They have a strong commitment to each other and rely on family, friends, co-workers and faith. His amazing strength to fightdepressionandthewayheovercame the hurdles that he once took for granted is incredible. The small things were major challenges and hurdles to overcome. Think about the life changing events a

person would face without the use of their hands. He and his family had their ups and downs in the process. He mentioned one day when he was feeling sorry for himself. He looked out the window and saw a young man using his mouth to control his transportation with no use of anything below the neck. He explained that you don’t have to lookfartofindsomeoneworseoffthan you. The message is inspiring. The tragic event helped create an opportunityforustoreflectanddiscuss the values of life. Looking inside ourselves, how would we handle this situation? How well did I handle the last situation when I faced adversity? How well will I handle it the next time? What can I learn from Gerry to better tackle future events in my life? How do I maintain a positive attitude and outlook? We all have to answer these questions internally. I just hope I have the courage to deal with challenges as well as Gerry and share the message to inspire others as Gerry has inspired us.

Outlets – Note the location and the number of outlets in each room. If the outlets only have two prongs and are missing the third hole for the ground-ing pin, the home is not grounded. You will want to consider having the electrical system updated.

Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) – GFCIs provide protection against shock from anelectrifiedapplianceincontactwith water. It is important that GFCI outlets are installed in areas where water and electricity may meet. This would include bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, outdoors, etc. If GFCIs are not in the home, you will want to plan on having them installed for your safety.

Lighting – Flip on lights and listen for any popping or sizzling sounds. If there are, there may be an electrical issue.

Appliances – Check the age and status of appliances that will come with the house. This could include: furnace, HVAC, water heater, refrigerator, oven, etc. Will these appliances need replaced in the near future? Are they working properly?

Faucets – Turn on faucets to make sure they are running and draining properly, and that there are no leaks.

Sump pump/drainage – If the home has a basement, check for a sump pump or proper drain-age. A basement susceptible to floodingcanbedangerousand costly.

Insulation – Check to see if the home is properly insulated. Insulated areas should include at-tics, ducts, crawlspace walls, and floorsorwallsthatareadjacenttounheated spaces.

Many homes sold every year have already been lived in and have the natural wear and tear of age and use. In 2015 alone, the National Association of Realtors says approximately 5,250,000 existing homes were sold, while the U.S. Census Bureau says 510,000 newly constructed homes were sold.

Safe Electricity provides the following checklist to help you evaluate potential hazards:

Roof – Note the condition and the age of the roof and the material it is made of. An old roof may leak and cause damage to the structure of the home. Detectors – Check if smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in the home.

Keep in mind, you likely won’t be able to check every detail of the home yourself. A home inspector will examine all parts of the home, and will provide you with a full report. Anything that is wrong with the house, you can choose to negoti-atewiththesellertofixtheissues,fixtheproblemsyourselfafterpur-chase, or back out of the deal. They alsowereinvitedintotheofficeofSecretaryof State Jesse White. During lunch, Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti addressed students and chaperones. Sanguinetti discussed her humble beginnings and being encouraged to not allow her background to limit her future. With her passion for volunteerism in local communities, she challenged students, “you never know where life may take you. Volunteer, make a difference. If not you, then who?” Illinois State Fair Manager Luke Sailer, a former Illinois Youth Leadership Council representative, challenged the students to take an interest in the political process and stressed how important their voices and actions are. He encouraged them to “take a leap of faith and work hard, and doors will open for you and your future.”Faye Yang, the 2017-18 Illinois Youth Leadership Council Representative from Wayne-White Counties Electric Cooperative, spoke about her experiences on the Youth to Washington tour and challenged attendees to maintain an interest in their cooperatives and the political process. After lunch, the students also visited the Old State Capitol and Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.

At the end of the day, the students were interviewed for the chance to participate in the Youth to Washington Tour, June 8-15, 2018. Two trips were awarded by each cooperative for the 2018 Youth to Washington contest. Determined, inspiring, and blessed. These words describe Gerry Kinney. It was just a normal day at Wayne-WhiteElectricCooperativeinFairfield,Illinois. Gerry was set to leave the next day for a 10-day vacation. The job was simple, nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, Gerry never should have been in harm’s way. Some brush obstructed his view and he raised his boom to get a better view. Without realizing it, he moved a little too close to the line. He made a spinning motion with his hand in the air to signal the crew to tie-in the line. And, that was it...he went to operate the bucket and couldn’t move his hand. Then the pain hit and it was excruciating. The crew didn’t see the contact but realized something was wrong. When Air Evac arrived, Gerry remembers telling them to get him to the best burn center around. “I remember the covered walkway at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis and that’s the last thing I remembered for a couple weeks,” said Gerry. Gerry’s wife, Denise, also worked for Wayne-White in meter data manage-ment. She heard there had been an ac-cident but didn’t know any details – she didn’t know it had been her husband. As she questioned her co-workers, she realized they weren’t ready to tell her. Theyhesitatedandstartedtofillherin.Immediately, she knew it was bad. Gerry had been with Wayne-White for 18 years. “We looked at Gerry as the leader of the group. If you want to learn something right, you learn it from Gerry Kinney,” said Jim Miles, Manager

of Safety and Loss Control from the Association of Illinois Electric Coop-eratives and a former employee of Wayne-White. Gerry explained, “I think in the really dangerous situations, your mind is on the danger. This was something simple. I just became unaware of where I was.” Both of Gerry’s hands and forearms were severly burned. He has had eight surgeries including the removal ofhis hands and most of his forearms. He said, “The hardest thing my wife ever had to do was to sign the release to remove my hands.” She had no choice. Ev-eryone knew there was no way to save them. “The mental part of trauma is as hard or harder than the physical trauma. The main thing you have to overcome is the reality,” explained Gerry. It was hard. Gerry was down and wondering why he hadn’t died. Then he realized something, “No matter how bad you’ve got it, you don’t have tolookveryfartofindsomeoneworse off.” For six weeks, every night someone from the Co-op brought out supper. “They put so much time, effort, and prayers in for me to get better, the least I could do was make that happen,” says Gerry. After the accident, he thought his path looked impossible. “I’m not on the same path. I’m on a different path. It

just gets easier and easier every day.” A lot of people have pitched in. “Sometimes being independent means asking for help,” he says. Within six months of his accident, Gerrywasfittedwithprosthetics,“Ihadthree goals: to eat a sandwich by myself, to drink a beverage without a straw, and to cut a steak. In one week’s time, I was able to do all three goals. I also shook the hands of all three of my surgeons.” He may be relearning all the same tasks he did in the past, but Gerry doesn’t let anything stop him.

“If he can’t do it, he’ll die trying,” said Denise. “You take for granted your sense of feel,” Gerry said. He watches every move with his prosthetics. “I still feel myhands.Istillfeeleveryfingerbutthey feel like they are constantly being stung by bees.” As long as he keeps busy, he doesn’t notice that sensation as much. Gerry has been so willing to learn new tasks and been such a high user, that he’s become part of studies to test prosthetics. “So far, I’ve broken sevenfingersandtwowrists.Itdoesn’thurttobreakafingeranymore!” he laughed.

He complained of needing ratchet straps to adjust the tightness of his pros-thetics. Sometimes you want it loose in the summer when it’s hot and other times you need them tight. One day he was pitching washers (a game similar to horseshoes).Hisrightarmflewoff.Hetried with the other arm. And, again, an-otherarmflewoff!Friendshelpedhimpick up pieces of his prosthetics, putting them in a bag to send back for repairs. “When they returned them, I had ratchet

straps!” he smiles. Sometimes the bat-

teries in his prosthetics go dead and he’s stuck

holding on to something and can’t let go. Once he grabbed a car door and the battery went dead. Luckily he was able to lift his leg to disconnect his hand from the arm. “I left

my hand attached to the car and took my arm

insidetocharge,”hesmiles.Gerryfindsthe humor in his new ways of living. Gerry visited Adams Electric and spoke about his accident, demonstrat-ing his prosthetics. He explained how the muscles in his forearm control the movements in the hand. He raised his arm, spinning his hand a full 360 and laughed, “Here’s something you can’t do!” He added, “I’m in charge of light bulbs now.” He can also use an app on his iWatch to select grip settings for each handtocompletespecifictasks.Hesaidhis wife has the same app. Gerry smiled, “I just asked that they not program any grips for a broom or vacuum.” Electricity always takes the path to ground. Considering that electricity flowedinonehand, throughhisbody, and out the other hand, you’d never ex-pect anyone to survive that. Most don’t survive. It was only by chance. Jim Miles explained, “I know why he’s here. There’s a lot of people to be touched by the words he shares.” Gerry shares his message with other Co-ops, churches, kids, any group that mightbenefit.Heremindsus,“Takeev-ery day very serious – even the simplest job.” He reminds linemen, “If your head is not in the game, ask a co-worker to take over. Take time to listen to ev-

eryone on the crew.

All those things add

up to us go-

ing home at night and

getting to be with our family.”

Headds,“Ifindablessing in every day. Don’t dwell

on the negative. Look for that blessing.” Thank you, Gerry, for your strong will, your commitment to learning and teaching others, and your inspiring story that has left a huge impact on all of us at Adams Electric Cooperative!
