From
The
Chair
Deborah H.
Cook
I can’t believe this is my last Catalystcolumn. The year has gone by so quickly.
First, I want to wish all of you a very happy
Thanksgiving. I also want to thank the ACS
Board of Directors and Libby Harper for all
the help they've provided during my year as
Chair. Additionally, I want to wish Deborah
Kilmartin much success as she assumes the
responsibilities for the Section.
Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Glenn and
Barbara Hodsdon Ullyot, this month we
feature the Ullyot Lecture. Glenn was an
active member of the Section and a great
advocate of bringing the joys of chemistry to
the public. His passion for science in general,
and chemistry in particular, has translated to
support for both the Section and the Chemical
Heritage Foundation. The Ullyot lecture will
be given at the Chemical Heritage Foundation
on November 9th by Dr. Marye Anne Fox.
Please plan on attending this exciting talk and
reception.
I hope that many of you had an opportunity
to participate in National Chemistry Week
(NCW) activities. The theme, the “Joy of
Toys” also focused on the fun and joy of our
field. I want to thank Anne DeMasi and her
NCW Committee for organizing the many
events that took place. NCW is always an
exciting time to engage many people and to
make the public aware of the importance of
chemistry.
Looking forward to December, please note
that the “Chemical Demonstrations for Kids
of All Ages” will take place on December 10th
at Rutgers University-Camden Campus. I
want to extend thanks to Tom Straub of
LaSalle University and Georgia Arbuckle-
Keil of Rutgers University for organizing the
event.
Again, I want to extend warm wishes for
the start of the holiday season. May this be
a time for reflection and appreciation of all
the gifts we receive.

Abstract: What does your web page say
about you? Obviously, your lifetime
achievements are more significant than what
can be included on a web page. But, when the
people who already know you are not sending
you the level of business you are looking for,
it's time to use your web page to help the
world know who you are, what you have
done, and what you might accomplish given
the chance. Chemical industry professionals
tend not to be prone toward self promotion.
However, if you want to be a successful
chemical consultant, it is absolutely necessary
to communicate what you can do for potential
customers.
Location: The Cynwyd Club, 332 Trevor
Lane, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
Reservation: To make or cancel a dinner
reservation, e-mail CCNReservations@

Absent: C. Bentzley, R. Acchione.
Chair Cook called the meeting to order at
2:34 PM.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Nominations Committee
M. Cichowicz reported that she has a partial
slate.
OFFICERS' REPORTS:
Chair
A. Templeton from Merck contacted the
Section regarding funds that Merck would like
to earmark for small research grants to BS/MS
level academic institutions. Merck would like
to collaborate with the Section in awarding
these funds ($10,000 is available for 10 $1,000
grants to further undergraduate research). Funds
are unrestricted and plans are to continue the
awards for the foreseeable future. The Board
agreed that the Section should explore this
opportunity.
The Section has received an Innovative
Event Award ($1776) for the September
meeting: supercomputing with laptops.
D. Cook, D. Kilmartin and L. Harper met
with B. Ullyot to discuss use of Ullyot funds and
the Ullyot award. B. Ullyot is very supportive
of a stronger Section role in deciding the
Ullyot lecturer. She would prefer a talk aimed
at the general public. Several recommendations
were made: a permanent representative from
the Section should be a member of the Ullyot
committee (in addition to the Section Chair-
elect) to ensure a stronger voice and continuity.
The lecture should be publicized beyond theCatalyst and Chemical Heritage mailing list,
and teachers and students should be encouraged
to attend.
A motion was made (C.J. Bruner) and
seconded (V. Tortorelli): A permanent position
should be created to represent the Section on
the Ullyot Selection Committee. Motion
passed unanimously.
A motion was made (D. Voet) and seconded
(T. Straub) to approve the nomination of Bill
Golton for Section permanent representative
to the Ullyot Selection Committee. Passed
unanimously.
OTHER BUSINESS:
T. Straub reported that the Section’s Poster
Contest Honorable mention winner (9-12
grade category) was mentioned in C&E News.
The Education Committee presented
certificates to 185 students at 175 schools for
excellence in chemistry.
Meeting was adjourned at 4:00 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Carol Carr

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY AND ABSTRACT
Dr. Marye Anne FoxThe American Workforce in the New
Century: Perils and Promise
Biography: Dr. Marye Anne Fox, a
nationally known chemist and academic leader,
was named the seventh chancellor of the
University of California, San Diego in April
2004 by the University of California Board
of Regents.
Previously, Fox was chancellor and distin-
guished university professor of chemistry at
North Carolina State University, a post she
held since 1998. Before going to North Caro-
lina, Fox spent 22 years at the University of
Texas, where she advanced from assistant
professor of organic chemistry to vice
president for research and held the Waggoner
Regents Chair in chemistry.
Fox has held over 50 endowed lectureships
at universities around the world. She also
served as visiting professor at Harvard
University, the University of Iowa, the
University of Chicago, the Université Pierre
et Marie Curie in Paris and the Chemistry
Research Promotion Center in Taipei.
Dr. Fox earned a BS in science from Notre
Dame College, a MS in science from Cleveland
State University and a PhD from Dartmouth
College. She is an elected member of the
National Academy of Sciences and has served
on its executive committee, and is a fellow of
the American Association for the Advance-
ment of Science, and an elected member of the
American Philosophical Society and the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Fox has received numerous awards,
including the Charles Lathrop Parsons Award
for 2005 from the American Chemical Society
in recognition of outstanding public service.
She has received a long list of research awards
from professional societies in the US and
abroad. She also has been honored with
numerous teaching awards, as well as the
Monie Ferst Award, a national award recog-
nizing outstanding mentoring of graduate
students. More than 50 students have received
advanced degrees under her supervision, and
over 100 postdoctoral fellows and sabbatical
visitors have worked with her.
Fox also serves on numerous boards,
including the President’s Council of Advisors
on Science and Technology (PCAST), where
she chaired the Subcommittee on Infra-
structure for the 21st Century in 2003; the
National Association of State Universities
and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC); and
a number of corporate boards.
Abstract: Globalization of the technology-
based economy is a fact of life, and many large
American companies are becoming increas-
ingly multi-national. In this environment,
America’s future prosperity will depend
sensitively on its citizens’ capacity to
contribute to a knowledge-based economy,
since success in this arena will dictate the
quality of life for our children and grand-
children. This talk will deal with those
factors that affect innovation: the quality of
K-12 and university education, a supportive
and encouraging climate that welcomes a di-
verse group of contributors, an infrastructure
that supports the production of path-breaking
tools and ideas, and government policies that
encourage collaboration and invention.
