With the November/December issue of the ESP you will have a new editor. New to the position, but not new to our

state organization. Heidi Freeman, one of your current two Co-Presidents has volunteered to share her gifts and talents in the capacity of editor.

I have been hopeful someone would show interest in the position and am thankful she has volunteered. She has been an asset as your Co-President and will be the same as your editor. We will work together for a seamless transition.

I have always enjoyed taking pictures for our organization. I hope to continue to do so and submit them to your new editor for consideration in future

ESP’s. I have always encouraged you to do likewise. We have not had to do as much arm twisting to get

your articles to us in a timely fashion as we have had to in the past. I thank you for that also.

I have enjoyed being your editor for the second time around, and I thank all of you for your cooperation in making this position a little easier. Please join me in welcoming Heidi to this new position. I know you will give her your complete cooperation as you did for me.

I am reminded of something I would like to close with. When asked to speak…Stand to be seen. Speak to be heard. Sit down to be appreciated. Keep making those memories.

What Did You Take Away?

Another Wonderful National Convention, this one in Louisville KY! I feel we all reconnected like every year, and like we’ve never been any different at all, just one big unified family.

The information from our PMG, and CEOs seemed factual and as light hearted as they could make it. I feel that the struggle of the business is showing through at every level though. My thought on this is that no matter how many months or years you may have left in this company, it’s up to each of us on a personal level to make it livable on a daily basis. Whether we need to work on our management style, skills, or just plain put our foot down on some issues, WE NEED TO DO IT. When the PMG said we all should be putting our families first, I think it struck a chord in many of us, and I for one, will be holding myself to task on this and also the company we work for.

As the current Legislative VP, I found my classes with Bob Levi were very informative and thorough on the topics that are currently on the table. One of the most

interesting facts on the worrisome item of losing the supplemental “bridge” portion in retirement, is that it would also affect Air Traffic Controllers, and Federal Law Enforcement. Having those large entities in our corner should hopefully have an impact on a positive outcome if that comes to the table.

I am grateful to have attended another national convention to reconnect, share info, learn, and take back to others the experiences that we all had……maybe not the bourbon tasting though …lol..

Hi Y’all,I just returned from the 1st UPMA

National Convention in Louisville, KY. What a great time we had! 1215 people attended – 487 active members, 127 active guests, 495 retirees, 93 retiree guests and 13 children.

Sunday, the state officers attended “break-out” sessions to learn about their roles as state officers.

Monday’s opening ceremony was a great Kentucky welcome with a 3-piece bluegrass band (banjo, fiddle and standup bass) and a local high school brass band.

Bob Levi, Director of Government Relations, spoke about budget reconciliation and Postal Optimism including the key elements of legislation. This includes addressing the retiree prefunding, refunding the overpayment to CERS and FERS, innovations and products, rate fairness, and a post plan moratorium. Bob is hopeful that some legislation regarding Postal issues will be seen in October.

Monday afternoon we attended our Area meeting where we discussed the issues that we are having in our states. We also elected Northeast’s new Area Coordinator, Paul Bianca, from Connecticut. Later that evening all NYS active, retirees, and guests enjoyed a lovely dinner at Bourbon Raw Restaurant in the 4th St. Live area. We had delicious food, hung out and got to know one another a little better.

Included in our registration packet was a blue UPMA polo shirt which we all wore during Tuesday’s session. PMG, Megan Brennan and COO Dave Williams were the main speakers.

Megan Brennan stated that we need regulatory reform and legislation for a stable Postal Service. Her strategy for the future includes delivering a world class customer experience, innovations to deliver value, investing in our future, and equip, engage and empower our employees. She said that we need to develop and maintain current employees to replace us as leaders. After answering many questions from the floor, she stated that as leaders we should not assume that upper management knows our struggles, we need to keep them informed. We also need to lay out for our public officials the urgency of legislation.

Dave Williams, COO spoke about our potential in the postal service is unlimited. He said that our most important responsibility is safety. Our focus needs

to be on identifying hazards and unsafe conditions and eliminate them. He briefly spoke on NPA which is currently 3.95. He wants it to be at least a 6.0 by the end of the fiscal year. FY 18 will be challenging. Williams addressed the treatment of Postmasters and said that employee engagement starts with engaged leaders. They are in the process of creating a new training for the MPOO’s to help them do what we are already doing. Training seminars were offered on both Monday and Tuesday afternoons. I attended a Financial Training seminar developed by the Western Area that had lots of good information. I will share that in a future article.

On Wednesday, we heard from Jeff Williamson, Chief Human Resources Officer and Executive Vice President. He stated that his job is to eliminate roadblocks and allow us to make this the best organization possible. Training and development is what builds an organization. He wants us to have the best information and training to make our decisions. We must be willing to learn as well as strive to continually grow. He said that no matter what the Postal Service does, that they must never lose sight of the employees because we are the ones that impact change. The Postal Service has made changes and is trying to give us more hands-on training. However, Williamson said that he has not been able to eliminate LMS or eCareer yet. They are working to make it one “system” called COD (Cornerstone on Demand) which is a cloud based talent management system. As a whole it will launch in the next 8-12 months and will encompass

recruiting, onboarding, learning, performance, compensation, succession, connection and reporting. The first 2 modules, hiring and learning, will be rolled out the first part of 2018.

We also cast votes for the new Secretary Treasurer at the National level and time and place for the National Convention in 2019. Jim Maher was elected Secretary Treasurer and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut will be the site for the UPMA National Convention in 2019.

There was so much to do and so much fun to be had

in Louisville. Remember next year’s National Convention is in Reno, NV. So, start planning now.

Our District Fall Meetings will be coming up in October. Be sure to check this issue for dates and times. Also, we do have a state website www.NYUnitedPMA.org and a Facebook page, www.facebook.com/groups/NYUPMA. Please check these often for updated information.

If you have any questions and/or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call or email me.

As you may or may not know we just had our first UPMA National Convention in Kentucky. A very successful one at

that. It was truly great to see both organizations finally united as one. The merger is finally complete. It was like we were never two. We took the best of both organizations and put them together. Our membership is strong and we are helping our craft employees with their aspirations for a career in management. Postmaster and managers around the U.S are attending career conferences, we have added an eLearning portal to our website which can be accessed by using your UPMA member ID. Every day this new organization makes me prouder to be a part of it. Our National board has worked tirelessly to address issues with NPA for this year and by the time you read this article they should be finalizing our next pay package.

In my previous articles, I have written about the Supervisor Workload credits (SWC and the PS 150). Please keep spreading the word to fellow Postmaster to check this information and if they need assistance to please feel free to reach out to me or one of your NYS board members. We continue to be successful to get what you earn. Please note your new supervisory budget as well. The base is 1848 and add 150 hours for each .10 additional SWC earned, this is based on July SWC and is updated as needed, specifically areas with growth. The formula can be found on the State and National web site. Just simply plug in your swc total and you will get your new budget. This will be retro for 2017. So, your budget for 2017 should reflect this change.

Effective November 1st I will no longer be NYS Co-President, my term is coming to a close. I will remain on the board as vice president. My pledge to you is to continue to be supportive of our members at all times.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as State Co-President of UPMA. The plan is to remain active and continue to assist the membership. Reach out to your fellow Postmasters and managers and ask them to join our network. We are giving 6 months’ free membership. If you know a 204 B looking for a career in management sign him or her up so they can be a part and help the organization grow. Invite them to the fall swings. Check the back page of this issue for dates.

The National Convention for those that have never been is an experience. Daily there are business sessions where we hear from our National officers on the agendas that they have worked on and are still working on. There are Legislative updates on what is or isn’t happening on Capitol Hill. The Bills are explained and what they mean to us as individuals and an organizational stand point. We hear from USPS headquarters representatives. This year we heard from the Postmaster General, the Chief Operating Officer, the head of Human Resources and the Eastern Area VP. We are able to ask questions to them and get direct answers. We are able to talk to any of the National UPMA officers on any concerns or questions that we have. If you are an officer you get to go to training specific for the job you are doing. There is time to relax, see the sights and have fun with your fellow members. We had to vote and elect our Representatives where this year we elected two

Vice Presidents for the East and Area Representatives. Next year we will be electing a National President. Next year we will be in Reno Nevada and most likely we again will offer some sort of incentive to help defray the cost. We had close to 50 people from NY attend. It was an experience all members should experience.

THE DIRECTION MOVING FORWARDHave you thought of the path we need to take to keep

those that we have as members and what we need to do to increase the base? If you have, please share your thoughts with me. If you haven’t please start thinking about it and let me know of what keeps you interested, what you would like to see at the District Swings and State Convention.

The County organizations that are out there are our grass roots for new members as well as our knowledge base of our retired. I need to hear from you on what has transpired at your meetings as in concerns, aspirations, direction and your officer contact information. The District Coordinator for your District needs to be invited to your meeting. I would like copies of your minutes to include those that attended, their contact information, office employed at and personal email. The more information I get from you, helps with moving us forward and keeps you more informed. We must move forward by using the collective thoughts and aspirations of all Active, Retired and Associate members. Making our organization better from within will attract those wanting to move up, knowing that we stand with them. I encourage retired members to attend these County meetings to help advise and direct in this direction.

I encourage and would like to see some action from each District that puts together not only your normal Swing meeting but a meeting that is just meant for aspiring OIC’s, 204b’s that addresses their eCareer with instruction and examples to follow. You also need to give direction on the kind of questions normally asked at each type of interview for Postmaster or Supervisor. These potential candidates will come for the direction or at least contact you if they can’t. These meetings should drive new membership, if not in the beginning at least as the word spreads that we are here to help them. The next generation of UPMA is there to tap into and it is a

must if not a necessity to survive. You have to make a choice to continue to succeed by helping yourself and your subordinates accomplish the necessary tasks to succeed. We have no idea what may be next coming from our employer as we have already seen the definition of a Postmaster be changed in 2011, POSTPlan and DUO’s happening since. Until we see legislation change our future course, you most likely will see future reductions of sorts to remain viable as a business. If you feel there is a better option that addresses these potential members, please call me as I think we should be open to any avenue that creates and retains members. The Career Awareness Conferences should be attended by each District Coordinator or representative to show our presence and if a Vice President is in the area please also attend. We are basically a new organization where everyone needs to know our name and what we can do for them. I have copies of the benefits each type of member receives in color if you wish to make your own colored copies. If black and white is ok for you to have as handouts they are published in this ESUPMA. I suggest having a colored copy for the table top.

Legislation that is on the forefront and legislation that isn’t needs to be addressed with all of our members. You ask how? Education through the varied news channels that we have will address the current items on Capitol Hill whether we advise all to look at the UPMA web site, the UPMA Leader or entice them to visit and be active with us during the Legislative sessions, attend District Swings, the State Convention or County meetings. What I would like to see every District do is to invite their Senator or

Congressional Representative to their District Swing to address us on what is happening and for us to address them as to what we need to see happen. Individually with our hectic schedules it is hard to meet with them. There is always the option of sending them a letter to address our concerns as Bob Levi always has talking points on, or at the very least your individual concerns. If they can’t come, most likely an Aid to them will be able to address us and take back our concerns. Pay for their dinner with

the District funds is always a nice gesture.

Has everyone printed and looked over your PS150, SWC’s, SOV or CSV documents. Your future is in your hands, make sure they are correct. If you don’t understand something, ask your Operations CSAW coordinator or District Coordinator to explain it. If something is wrong, fight to fix it. If you are having concerns not being addressed, contact your District Coordinator

and try to get it resolved. If they can’t resolve the concern the next option the District Coordinator will use to resolve will be the Chapter Member Representative Vice President. This procedure must be followed. Individuals requesting to resolve a situation must understand that we need to use the specifics including office and names when resolving. I will not proceed to resolve a situation where I or another officer has to give an example of a hypothetical situation.

Remember to succeed you need to be involved or at the very least understand what is going on around you. Strive forward, put yourself out there, be involved and step up where it is needed. The last five years is a good example of why you should.

The next generation of UPMA is there to tap into and it is a must if not a

necessity to survive.

The Downstate PrespectivePreparing for retirement is a very

complex topic. Your home location, living style, family type, health, etcetera, all play a part of your planning that must be taken into account. Planning is truly a very personal decision in how you prepare for retirement. Also, what we expected in benefit when we retire and what happens to those benefits changes. Case in point out health benefits are under attack. I am so concerned about my health benefits that after 46 years I made my first to the Northport VA Hospital. I am preparing for the worst. I have had the same health plan for 46 years. I don’t think under the present administration I will be able to continue with my health plan as it is now.

As retiree president I am looking to address issues that affect retirees. I would be focusing more of our effort on HR 1205 the WEP Bill rather than HR 756 the Postal Reform Act. The passage of HR 1205 would add $650.00 a month to my pension. HR 756 does nothing for retirees. HR 756 if passed with the Medicare provision would save the Postal Service from the prefunding the retirees Health Benefits that it has been forced to pay in advance. It is my opinion the prefunding should be repealed. No other federal agency has been burdened with this prefunding. Why did we allow this to happen? The Postal Service should be supporting legislation to come up with new ways to generate revenue. HR 756 brings up another issue when giving retirement advice. When asked about Medicare Part B, my advice was to not let the opportunity pass and enroll at age 65. I always stated that it is insurance than you hope not to use but; it will be available to you if your health takes a turn for the worst. Now that HR 756 has been introduced I have been criticized for my advice. The reason for taking Medicare Part B at 65 was to avoid the penalty later down the road. HR 756 as written states, that those retirees will be exempt from the penalty when being forced into Medicare Part B. There is also assistance for paying Part B for a short time. What fools we are for enrolling at 65. We receive nothing for being responsible retirees. That means that I have paid for four years and another retiree would get the same monthly fee.

We must be careful when giving advice. I plan to work with a financial advisor when writing articles on preparing for retirement. Again, retirement advice is a

very complex topic. Every member’s needs are different. Some information for those who are planning to retire It’s never too early to start planning for retirement

in order to ensure it goes smoothly. Here you will find information to help ensure your retirement starts well.

· Service Credit – Program that allows employees to make payments into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) periods of service during which they either did not contribute to the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund, or for which they received a refund of their retirement contributions. In statutorily defined circumstances, employees may make service credit deposits or redeposits, which include both principal and interest, to maximize the benefits they will receive upon retirement. • Thrift Savings Plan (external link) – Saving for your

retirement is an important part of your retirement benefits in addition to your monthly annuity. The Thrift Savings Plan Website has additional information.

• Federal Ballpark Estimate - You can use the Federal Ballpark Estimate to automatically calculate estimates of future Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) retirement benefits and Thrift Savings Plan account balances. It will also let you know how well you are doing in meeting your savings goal.

• Retire in Five Years - You should begin planning several years before the date you have set for retirement so that you will know what is required to continue certain benefits into retirement.

• Retire in One Year – Here are specific steps you should do to get ready for retirement.

• Less than One Year to Retirement – As the time gets near, ensure you are ready.

• Applying for Retirement – This explains the retirement process.

• Refund of Retirement Contributions – This explains the options available to employees who leave Federal service before being eligible for retirement.

• Voluntary Contributions Inquiries – Inquire about your voluntary contributions options before you retire.

UPMA National AuxiliaryThe National Auxiliary to the United Postmasters and Managers of America was established with the common

goal to help the Postmasters, Managers and Supervisors. The Auxiliary supports, promotes, and protects their concerns, while providing their spouse, family, and/or friends, with an organization of friendship and fellowship. Sharing concerns, building good public relations for the Postal Service, generating new ideas, having fun together all make our work more interesting, worthwhile, and rewarding.

Membership in the Auxiliary consists of UPMA Members or family of UPMA, to include spouses, sons, daughters, fathers, mothers or grandchildren. Associate Members are any persons supportive of the UPMA, including in-laws, nieces, nephews, employees of USPS and their family members, and special friends of UPMA. B.R.A.T.S. are auxiliary members between the ages of 6 and 21. “B.R.A.T.S. stands for Bringing Real Attributes to Society”.

The support of the UPMA Auxiliary and your State Branch Auxiliary to UPMA is invaluable. We make the Auxiliary a family supported UPMA organization. Postmasters, Managers and Supervisors need all the support they can get on postal concerns. The Auxiliary members can rally community support, promote postal concerns, and keep in touch with Congressional Representatives on Postal issues.

Behind the scenes, the Auxiliary works to ensure that UPMA functions run smoothly and that a good time is had by all. Your Chapter may host the hospitality room at your annual State Convention, provides an evening of entertainment, maybe host a luncheon or picnic supper for the active UPMA and their families. Some of these activities might include putting on skits, planning tours, shopping, or just plain relaxing together. By becoming a member of your Auxiliary, you will learn about our organization, and how we support UPMA. Most importantly, you will make new friends and be sharing great fun and fellowship.

Membership dues are simply $10.00/per year for primary Member and $5.00 for additional family members. For further information contact Michael Silvestri Co-President Retired NYS Chapter UPMA. My contact information is on page two of this publication. You can also find my contact information at www.nyunitedpma.org; I will be glad to answer your questions.

Something New is Coming to UPMA NYS ChapterWhile I was attending the National Convention in KY

I was able to sit in on the first UPMA Auxiliary meeting. During that meeting, the bylaws were voted on and elections were held. The National UPMA AUXILIARY was established. For those of you who is not familiar with the Auxiliary you can access the information on the newly established Auxiliary website: https://sites.google.com/view/unitedpma-national-auxiliary/home

I have canvassed the Active and Retiree boards, as well as the District Coordinators on the issue of establishing

a NYS Auxiliary Chapter. My response was favorable on establishing the Auxiliary. A link has been added to the NYS website. The link is located on the retiree’s corner. If you are interested in the Auxiliary Chapter or have any questions please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to speak with you on the subject of the Auxiliary. My contact info is also can be found on the NYS website. www.nyunitedpma.org

Incoming Retiress Board

Happy and RetiredI have just returned from an incredible

Nation Convention hosted by the Kentucky State UPMA Branch held in Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville was full of great restaurants, museums, and shopping. We elected new officers for both the actives and retirees. Retirees held two meetings one on Sunday and one Monday. Retirees also held a luncheon, dance and had a hospitality room that was open each night.

I find that National and State Conventions are more like a retiree’s reunion giving me the chance to reunite will old friends and meet new friends in order to spend hours talking about old time stories while working for the USPS and while at past conventions. Those that were unable to attend were greatly missed and I hope to see you soon. I wish that more retirees will start getting involved in our new organization, United Postmasters

and Managers of America. As our convention continued each day it became obvious that we are growing as a family. UPMA has formed a Nation Auxiliary, please read other articles in this issue for details.

You need not to get involved on the National or State level, being involved on the local level would be appreciated. Local meeting for UPMA will be scheduled, please come out and join us as we go forward standing strong and united.

I would like to thank the NYS UPMA Chapter for their continued support they have shown to all retirees though out the years.

If you wish to be added to our retiree e-mail list just send me you e-mail address to [email protected]

Greetings to my UPMA family. I hope you have had a wonderful summer. I recently had the privilege to attend

the 1st UPMA National Convention in Louisville KY. This convention was held at the Galt House Hotel. What a beautiful hotel within walking distance of many area attractions. Let’s back up a bit though. The trip to Louisville started out just fine with a flight from Buffalo that connected in Baltimore. All was well until we landed in Baltimore and were told that there was a change in our flight. Come to find out the change was actually a cancelation. All flights in/out of Baltimore were canceled due to weather. The sun was shining! The earliest they could get us to Louisville was the next night at 8 PM. Well there was too much going on at the National Convention

to wait until the next night. So, we hopped in a rental car and drove 10 1/2 hours through traffic jams, tornadoes, and lots of rain to finally arrive at 2 AM in the morning - but we made it!

Saturday was filled with registration and local sightseeing, we even got to watch some of the contestants from Kentucky trying out for American Idol - what fun! We also had the pleasure of going to howl at the moon dueling piano bar. Sunday was our state photo and a welcome dinner. Monday was the start of our general sessions with all states in attendance. Very informative speakers and announcements. Following general session was a service /membership luncheon and then a meeting and reelection with our eastern area UPMA coordinator

Jo Oberly. Training seminars followed with much needed information. A state dinner was attended by all NY State members in attendance on Monday evening. Very good food and fun by all. General Sessions opened again on Tuesday. PMG Megan Brennan was in attendance and

spoke about the upcoming changes and how we need to accept the changes and grow our business even with our new challenges. Tuesday evening was much fun with a cruise on the “Belle of Louisville “, what fun and what a beautiful sunset. Wednesday’s general session was spent with election of UPMA National Officers and swearing in ceremony of our newly elected UPMA officers. Our grand banquet followed in the evening and then a dance to close out the evening.

As you can read from my article, our conventions are not all just meetings, we have a lot of interaction with our peers and mentors. Much needed relaxation and fun. This is what keeps us going and trying to be the best that we can be. As your executive VP, I will strive to be the best that I can be to assist you in whatever you may need. I am also on a steadfast course to grow our membership. Please plan on attending our upcoming career conference in September in Buffalo and our fall swing - time and date to be determined. Until next time, keep your head up and a smile on your face.

Thank you for returning this form with your contribution.

Kathy & I had a wonderful, productive time at the National Convention in Louisville, KY, August 5-9.

Anita Peters and I both played piano for the Sunday Morning Worship Service; I accompanied our choir of willing singers.

Jack D. Wilkins was elected Retirees National President.

Howard Foust was recognized for attending his 51st consecutive National Convention.

We enjoyed attending the Retiree Luncheon, and the

Grand Banquet, as well. What a sea of colors, as many of the ladies wore their finest hats!

Successful bidder for hosting the 2019 UPMA National Convention was Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT.

On our final day, we went on a Trolley Sightseeing Tour of Louisville – very interesting.

Just received word that Joe Peckovitch passed away August 15, 2017 from medication complications.

Joe served as Postmaster in Cementon and Windham NY.

Joe was to leave for a 3 week trip to Alaska with his son and grandson.

They will do the trip and upon return memorial service will be arranged.

Joe, Lionel Ford, and myself were roommates at several state conventions. NY has lost a great guy.

Back from our 1st National UPMA Convention in Louisville, KY. We had 49 members and guests representing New

York with a total of over 1200 attending the convention. There were many training sessions for not only State and prospective officers on Sunday, but also for work, financial and personal improvement during the week. General sessions were adjourned between Noon and 1 PM daily, leaving some time to go out and enjoy the sights of the City. Postmaster General Megan Brennan addressed us Tuesday Morning on the current state of the Postal Service and the continuing decline of not only first class but also advertising mail. She also stated that there will be no current reevaluations on any level 18 office. There are going to be several DUO offices that will be regaining their carriers in the near future. Next year the National convention will be in held in Reno, Nevada from July 21-27, 2018. We will be having our newly elected State board meeting on Sat Nov.4 2017 with our audit being conducted on Friday night prior in Lake George, NY. We will be discussing upcoming events, incentives and budget for 2018.

Hello fellow UPMA membersSo we just got back from the 1st

national convention for UPMA in Louisville KY and it was a great success. There were 1215 attendees from all over the country, we had a great agenda and guest speakers. Our PMG Megan Brennan, Dave Williams the chief operating officer and Jeff Williamson the chief human resources officer for the postal service made themselves available to us for questions. There were several training breakout sessions ranging from adverse action, financial planning, retirement seminars, healthcare and TSP options. We also voted on the location for the 2019 national convention and the winner was Mohegan sun in Connecticut. Our national board did an

outstanding job planning the agenda for convention we were done with business around noon each day which left time for people to spend time with their families and friends and the board put together some very nice entertainment for everyone as well. There were quite a few first timers there which is always nice to see, I spoke to some of them and they were pleasantly surprised at the training and networking that was made available to them and would definitely come again. Our state convention will be in Lake George NY and the national convention will be in Reno NV in 2018 I urge anyone that has not been to a convention to put it on the calendar and go to them, it is an experience you will not regret!!!

Hope to see everyone at mid-winter in November.

Faith In UPMA Well, we just concluded a great

national UPMA Convention in Louisville KY. One of my favorite parts of convention time is getting together with old friends that I have not seen in a while. Usually on the opening weekend of convention there is time allotted for church services. For the last few conventions, my family and I have linked up with Josephine Zunno to attend Mass in the nearest Catholic cathedral where we usually hear some of the history of our host city.

While we did hear some of the history of Louisville (ie: Louisville was the first Diocese established west of the Appalachian Mountains and it was the home of George Rogers Clark of Lewis and Clark fame, etc.), it was the homily that really got me thinking about UPMA. The homily was about faith. The priest spoke about how faith has low moments and “peak experiences”. For him, low moments were when the congregation fell below two hundred souls and the loss of beloved members of the parish. Peaks were seeing the rebirth of the parish, the joy of becoming a priest, and seeing programs to benefit others that he thought of becoming reality as fully established programs in the Diocese.

My UPMA family has also had its share of lows and peaks over the last couple of years. I think anyone would be hard-pressed to find a member who was not saddened at the end of the League or NAPUS. There were so many great memories had by both organizations. Tragic

losses such as that by the Goff family and the death of members such as Betty Eickler are also grave lows for us. However, it is the lows that we have found the strength to make one great organization, bringing the best of both together. The first National Convention of UPMA is a fabulous “peak” that we have climbed together. I was thrilled to hear John Olsen, National Retired UPMA President, state that New York was a model for all states to follow in how to reorganize. It was truly a “peak” to see former League and NAPUS members work, laugh, argue, meet, and brainstorm together as co-owners of a great new organization.

What happened on Monday night of the convention, following the NY State dinner, really drove home our new unity for me. Without getting into great detail, there was a case of mistaken identity in a Louisville club where many members of the New York and California delegations had gathered. Two distinguished members of UPMA were asked to leave. A national officer of UPMA was in there and heard what happened. Without hesitation, he called out for all UPMA members to leave the establishment as a show of solidarity. To the best of my knowledge, every member of UPMA left without question and most of the group moved on to another site where a great time was had. Moments of unity like this tell me that we have a great leadership in place to lead UPMA forward from here. It renews my faith that we are on the right track.

My First!!!I just returned from attending my

first ever National Convention. I cannot express enough the benefits I received from attending.

I listened to key speakers, attended some beneficial training seminars, and most of all had the opportunity to collaborate with so many other members. It was so nice to know that I am not alone and that there are so many others that have the same concerns that I do.

Please if you haven’t already done so check out our very beneficial New York UPMA website and Facebook page for the latest news and training. nyunitedpma.org/ & www.facebook.com/groups/NYUPMA

If you have any subject matter that you would like additional information on please feel free to email or message me and I will do my best to provide the membership with the information.
