Ever wonder where is medical technology heading over the next 20 years? Paramount will be reducing costs and top among cost drivers is hospitalization. Recent developments in wireless, on-body sensing technologies coupled with wearable micro-dosing drug delivery pumps will be among the key technologies that will transform how we keep people well, out of the hospital and demanding less healthcare services. Come hear from two local innovators who are in the trenches, turning these visions into reality today, right here in San Diego.

Mark McWilliams CEO: Medipacs, Inc – Medipacs, Inc is a development stage infusion device company. He serves on the board of directors at Medipacs, SpectraScience, Vala Sciences and SleepSafeDrivers. Prior to Medipacs, he was Director of Cell Imaging and Analysis at Beckman Coulter after the sale of Q3DM to Beckman in December 2003. 4 WAY TEST

For Rotary, The Four-Way Test is the cornerstone of all action. It has been for years, and it will be in the future. Of the things we think, say or do

As Rotarians, we should have The Four-Way Test in mind in every decision we make, all day long. Our utmost responsi-bility is to Speak The Truth, to Be Fair, to Build Goodwill and Better Friendships, and to do our very best in all situations.

4 Way Test was developed in 1932 by

Herbert J. Taylor.

---- 1 ---- Is it the TRUTH?

---- 2 ----Is it FAIR to all concerned?

---- 3 ----

Will it build GOODWILL and

better FRIENDSHIPS?

---- 4 ----Will it be BENEFICIAL

to all concerned?

Amidst all the frightening news about the fires this past week, I initially was alarmed to see 7 large Dept of Los Angeles firetrucks parked in the Marriott valet this morning. Glad to learn that they were getting a well-deserved respite from fighting fires, compliments of the Marriott. Of course seeing them in person would have been even better (eye candy for the ladies!)

Our Rotarian of the Day was none other than Marty Rosenstein, our District Rotaract Chairman. His faith in Rotary was renewed after spending a few days with 16 underprivileged youth cleaning up the Marine Barracks ( don’t tell Marty’s wife that he knows how to clean ;-) ) Rich Papike displayed his usual quick wit, asking if Roger Drexler and Marty Rosenstein were both from the same school of slow deliberate speakers - just different sides of the country (as Brett hovered around Marty waiting for him to finish….)

Rick Binder introduced our guests. Jan Percival brought Mike Shess and Ryan Lambs from the West Coaster Magazine who are graciously promoting our June 28 Craft Beer event. Past member Mike Chrome joined us. Kathleen Roche-Tansey’s guest Jennifer Schafer (no relation to our Kim!) returned for the 3rd time. Fary Moini introduced her dear friend Lila Afshar and Lila’s daughter, Eina Afshar.

ROTARY BUSINESS:We were graced by Steve Cross Assistant District Governor who presented an award to

Brett for having completed some data entry on the website.

Mike Shess gave us some fun facts about Craft beer (been here since 1890’s starting with 3 companies Mission Brewery, SD Brewery Co. and Aztec Brewery, in 1989 Karl Strauss opened their Home Brew Mart and there are now 88 breweries in SD alone!)

Steve Brown, our Rotary Trustee Board Member recognized Lila Afshar with a Paul Harris award (from Fary) and Susan Schwarz awarded Fary a Plus 4 Paul Harris pin with 3 sapphires!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:Linda Stouffer - June 28 Craft Fair…she teased Sandi Rimer for not purchasing tickets…watch out, she will hound you if you don’t buy tickets! Jacquie Reilly reminded members about current Dress for Success collection and VA Hospital dinner on May 28. Roger Drexler SLOWLY invited us to attend Sunshine Boys, a play about 2 vaudevillians who hate each other at the Scripps Ranch Theatre, June 7 at 6:00 PM (while Brett and Laara lounged in nearby chairs ;-) and waited their turns.) Tickets are $45.00 which includes dinner. Brett recruited for Saturdays’ Partners in Therapeutic Horseman Ranch trip and reminded us that the District Governors Dinner is on June 24.

PROGRAM:Alex Monroe presented today’s program

highlighting Community Service Avenue of Service. Jacquie Reilly spoke a bit about Dress for Success, Fary Moini told us why she is passionate about providing food to the Miramar Food Locker and asked for donations of cans of food or baby diapers (which Alex currently buys by the truckload!)Linda Andrews read a lovely letter she received from the SD Council on Literacy for our participation in their book drive last year. We saw slides from Project Oz. Kevin Carlson touched all of our hearts by telling us about the San Diego Family Justice Center project honoring our dear Stu Brown. With the help of over 70 painters, signs from the Rock Church, Vista Paint and Valley View Casino, even a helping hand from interim Mayor Gloria Todd a dispute with labor unions, over $55K worth of goods and services were provided at no cost to the Family Justice Center. A cute aside, when Kevin Carlson’s daughter saw the wall of shoes available to Dress for Success clients, she exclaimed “Daddy, they have more shoes than Mommy!” His thought “not really”…Hats off to you Kevin for a job well done! His final quote by Winston Churchill really sums it all up beautifully “We make a Living by what we Get, but we make a Life by what we Give”.Brett paid a final thank you to Steve and Susan Brown for funding most of Operation Camp Pendleton.

We almost avoided hearing Brett’s joke of the day but not quite….It was a real groaner about a biker guy named Fred Johnson. Ask him if you want to hear it…I can’t bear to repeat it!

SETH KOEUTBorn on a refugee camp in Thailand to Cambodian parents, Seth

started life on mainland Southeast Asia before moving to the Phil-

ippines at a few months of age. At two years old, Seth and his

family moved to San Diego and have stayed there ever since. Like

many imports to San Diego, Seth’s eclectic past played a pivotal

role in his journey through life. His first real memory was walking

on the concourse at Lindbergh Field after disembarking the plane

at the tender age of two.

Growing up in East San Diego afforded Seth the opportunity to

interact and befriend people from all over the world. Seth’s middle

school, Horace Mann, had over 32 languages represented and

many more different ethnicities within its student body. Noticing

that he enjoyed languages and cultures, Seth studied one of the

most prolific Romance languages, Spanish. In high school, Seth

was fortunate enough to have the legendary Sandra Scherf as an

instructor and became inspired to study Spanish in college.

Seth’s passion for languages translated into adding French and

Italian into the mix and dabbling in several others on the side. In

addition to a penchant for languages, Seth also acquired the wan-

derlust bug that precipitated his world tour of various countries

and regions. Starting with our neighbor to the South, Seth trav-

elled deep into the interior of Mexico on Rotary sponsored trips

in high school and independently. Other countries that joined the

ranks include: Australia, Belgium, Cambodia, Dominican Repub-

lic, England, Fiji, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Ke-

nya, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Ko r e a ,

Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, and

Vietnam. As a Candidate for the For-

eign Service, Seth hopes to add many

more countries into the mix and edu-

cate others on American Foreign

Policy through Public Diplomacy. O
