OUR JUDGES

Dogs - Paula Brooks (Fraglestone)

I have owned dogs, along with my family since 1972. Owning a Smooth Collie followed by Rough Collies and Cairn Terriers, my introduction to Bearded Collies was in 1988. I have been showing Beardies since 1992 and have successfully qualified 7 Beardies for the Stud Book Register (owned by myself and Steve Grundy). My biggest achievements being Ch Braddabrook Botzaris at Fraglestone winning BOB at Crufts 1998 and making up our first homebred Champion - Ch Fraglestone Foxstar JW in 2007. We are currently campaigning a ‘Foxstar’ daughter and granddaughter. I started judging in May 1998 and have judged three Breed Club Open Shows. I awarded CCs for the first time at Border Union (2008), I judged Bitches at the SCBCC Championship Show (2010) and Bournemouth Championship Show (2012). I judged for the first time overseas in November 2013 where I was invited to judge at the Bearded Collie Club of Belgium Championship Show. I was honoured to be voted to judge Bitches at our Club Show in December 2014 and even more thrilled that I was voted to judge the Dogs this year. I have been a Committee member of the Bearded Collie Club for the last fourteen years taking the roles of Education Officer, Vice Chairman and in 2013 Chairman. I also served on the Committee for the South Wales and West Branch of the Bearded Collie Club for twelve years, holding the positions of Secretary and Membership Secretary, and Editor for the Beardie Gossip (Club Magazine). I also served on the Committee for the Barry, Penarth & South Glamorgan Canine Society for 8 years and was Secretary for three years until I relocated to Monmouth. I have stewarded on many occasions for many local Societies since 1994.A huge part of my life has been dedicated to the breed as part of the Bearded Collie Club and I believe it is so important to encourage responsible ownership and the wellbeing of our beloved breed.Thank you to everyone who voted for me to judge once again at the Bearded Collie Club Championship Show.

Bitches - Glenda O'Connell (Atherleigh)

I have owned our lovely breed since 1983 and bred my first litter in 1988. To date I have bred 7 litters of Beardies and have bred/owned 7 champions plus other CC, RCC and JW winners. I currently share my home with my husband Mark and 3 Beardie girls who are daughter/granddaughters of my Ch Atherleigh Over The Rainbow JW, who passed away last year at the grand age of 17.I first awarded CCs in 2008 and have also judged in Sweden, Germany, Belgium and Norway. To judge the bitches at the BCC Diamond Jubilee Ch Show is indeed a great honour. To say it is a dream come true would be an understatement and I thank the members for voting for me to judge their girls at this special show.

Referee - Sue Carter (Woodacre)

Sue has owned and showed Bearded Collies since 1980. Sue's first judging appointment was in 1983, awarding CCs in 1998. She has judged mainly in the UK but has held appointments in the Netherlands and America.Sue has held the position of Treasurer for the Bearded Collie Club for several years and feels it is rewarding to put something back into the Breed. She is very much looking forward to her judging appointment as Referee at the Bearded Collie Club Championship Show in December.

BEARDED COLLIE DNA DATABANKTAKE A POSITIVE STEP TO HELP SAFEGUARD

THE FUTURE HEALTH OF OUR BREED

One of the most important legacies we can leave for our breed is a DNA Databank and the Joint Breed Liaison Committee has made arrangements with the Animal Health Trust to collect and archive the DNA from KC Breed registered Bearded Collies.

A DNA Databank is a collection of DNA samples from different Bearded Collies that can be stored for an indefinite period of time with a view to using it in the future for research purposes, e.g. investigating the causes of inherited diseases, studies into genetic diversity or the frequency of a genetic mutation in the general Bearded Collie population, such as was carried out in the recent CEA study.

We are interested in storing DNA from any Bearded Collie but especially those which have, or will be, used for breeding purposes. We also want to store DNA from those dogs that are known to be affected by, or be closely related to, dogs affected with inherited conditions.

DNA can be collected by means of a cheek swab - the cost of the swab, extracting the DNA and storing it is only £5.00 per dog. We are pleased to be offering owners the facility to provide samples of their Beardies DNA at our Diamond Jubilee Championship Show at the subsidized cost of £2.50 per kit.

You can have your dog swabbed at the show - in which case you will need to bring details of your dog, including KC registration number, microchip/tattoo no. if known and details of any possible inherited health conditions, together with copies of any relevant information regarding them i.e. hip score certificates, eye exam certificates, dates of diagnosis and copies of any key notes from the clinical history.

OR you can collect a swab kit, do the procedure at home and send your samples and information to the AHT in the envelope provided.

Whichever you wish to do please order the number of kits you require on the entry form.

Remember it is important that you update the health information on your dog so that any changes in clinical status can be recorded. The AHT also want to know if your dog lived a long healthy life too!

Both owner and dog information is kept in the strictest confidence, although from time to time a list of the names of dogs whose DNA is stored may be released to Breed Club representatives. No information other than the name is released.

Swabs and submission forms are also available from the Animal Health Trust, email – [email protected] (also the email address for updating the health information on your dog).

To encourage owners to submit samples to the DNA Databank, the BCC is subsidizing the cost of the swabs so they are

HALF PRICE if ordered with your entry.
