OUR JUDGES

Dogs - Mrs Chris Burscough (Kilfinan)Together with my husband Tony, we have owned and exhibited Bearded Collies since 1987. In that time we have qualified 22 Bearded Collies for the KC Stud Book and bred 4 more for others, 17 of the 22 were home-bred. 6 have become UK Champions with 1 holding a dual UK/Irish title. The Bearded Collies we have owned and shown have won a total of 30 CCs and 25 RCCs to date; our Beardies have also been campaigned in Ireland where they have won a number of CACIBs, and 4 have achieved Irish titles. We have also bred 2 Canadian Champions and they have gone on to produce more for the current owner. I judged my 1st classes of Bearded Collies in 1994 at Open level and have awarded CCs 4 times since then, the 1st time at Birmingham National 2010. The same year I was also honoured to be invited to judge the Bearded Collie Club of Germany Speciality Show together with the Working Tests. I also judged the Bearded Collie Club of Belgium Speciality in 2017. I also award CCs in our other breed, Skye Terriers.I was delighted and honoured to be invited to judge Dogs at the Bearded Club Championship Show as this is one of my favourite shows. I always consider each judging appointment as an opportunity to further my knowledge and look forward to an enjoyable day with our wonderful breed.

Bitches - Mrs Sue Carter (Woodacre)Sue has loved dogs for as long as she can remember, her first dog being a spaniel who lived to the grand ol' age of 17 years.She has owned and showed Bearded Collies since 1980. Her first Beardie 'Woodland Merle', won the Woodacres their first CC in 1985.In 1988 'Moonhills Rosy Glow of Woodacre' joined the household, winning 1 CC and 2 RCCs. She was the mother of 'Woodacre Wynsome Blue' (4 RCCs) and the first homebred Woodacre Champions 'Ch Woodacre Wynter Knight' (7 CCc, 7 RCCs) and 'Ch Woodacre Wynter Star at Geliland' (3 CCc, 6 RCCs) Other Champions within the Woodacre kennel have followed over the years.Sue's first judging appointment was in 1983, awarding CCs in 1998. She has judged mainly in the UK including Crufts (Dogs) and also in the Netherlands and America. Sue has held the position of Treasurer for the Bearded Collie Club since1991 and feels that it is rewarding to give something back to the breed.

Referee - Mrs Wendy Knowles (Tonwynde)Together with my husband Tony, we have owned and shown three Bearded Collies, all of whom gained their Stud Book numbers. We bought our first Bearded Collie (brown/white) in 1989, which we campaigned and made up to Ch Flosswood Rum Punch. Our other two Beardies Spinningdale Silver Sunset at Tonwynde (blue/white) gained one CC, Haylane High Society at Tonwynde (slate/white) (son of Ch Flosswood Rum Punch) also won well in the ring. Although we no longer own, or show Beardies, having lost two to age and one to a tumour, they will always be our favourite breed, and as such I try to attend as many shows as possible.I enjoy judging our wonderful breed, and in 2010 gave my first set of CCs at Darlington Championship Dog Show, attracting a strong entry. Further judging appointments have been Driffield in 2013 where again I had an excellent entry, and the Working & Pastoral Breeds of Scotland in 2016. I am pleased to say all of my CC winners have gone on to gain their titles. l shall be judging Beardies at East of England in 2019.In October 2014 I was invited to judge Bearded Collies at the Ijsselshow International Championship Dog Show in Zwolle, Holland, awarding CAC, CACIB, and my BOB Bearded Collie went on to win Reserve Best in Show. I also was asked to judge Best Baby in Show.I continue to Steward at my local Championship Shows when available.

BEARDED COLLIE DNA DATABANKTAKE A POSITIVE STEP TO HELP SAFEGUARD

THE FUTURE HEALTH OF OUR BREED

One of the most important legacies we can leave for our breed is a DNA Databank and the Joint Breed Liaison Committee has made arrangements with the Animal Health Trust to collect and archive the DNA from KC Breed registered Bearded Collies.A DNA Databank is a collection of DNA samples from different Bearded Collies that can be stored for an indefinite period of time with a view to using it in the future for research purposes, e.g. investigating the causes of inherited diseases, studies into genetic diversity or the frequency of a genetic mutation in the general Bearded Collie population, such as was carried out in the recent CEA study.We are interested in storing DNA from any Bearded Collie but especially those which have, or will be, used for breeding purposes. We also want to store DNA from those dogs that are known to be affected by, or be closely related to, dogs affected with inherited conditions.DNA can be collected by means of a cheek swab - the cost of the swab, extracting the DNA and storing it is only £5.00 per dog. BCC Rescue and Welfare are pleased to be offering owners the facility to provide samples of Beardies DNA at our Championship Show at the subsidised cost of £2.50 per kit.You can have your dog swabbed at the show - in which case you will need to bring details of your dog, including KC registration number, microchip/tattoo no. if known and details of any possible inherited health conditions, together with copies of any relevant information regarding them i.e. hip score certificates, eye exam certificates, dates of diagnosis and copies of any key notes from the clinical history. OR you can collect a swab kit, do the procedure at home and send your samples and information to the AHT in the envelope provided.Whichever you wish to do please order the number of kits you require on the entry form.Remember it is important that you update the health information on your dog so that any changes in clinical status can be recorded. The AHT also want to know if your dog lived a long healthy life too!Both owner and dog information is kept in the strictest confidence, although from time to time a list of the names of dogs whose DNA is stored may be released to Breed Club representatives. No information other than the name is released.Swabs and submission forms are also available from the Animal Health Trust, email – canine.genetics@aht.org.uk (also the email address for updating the health information on your dog).

RULES and REGULATIONS 1. The Show will open at 8.00 am. 2. Dogs will be received at any time after the opening of the show but it is the exhibitor's responsibility to

ensure that dogs are available for judging when required. 3. Judging will commence at 9.30 am (bitches); 10.00 am (dogs). 4. Exhibits may be removed from the Show after their judging has been completed. The show will close half

7. The Committee reserves to itself the right to refuse entries. 8. Puppies under six calendar months of age on the first day of the Show are not eligible for exhibition. 9. The mating of bitches within the precincts of the Show is forbidden. 10. Best Puppy in Show Where a Best Puppy in Show competition is scheduled the Best Puppy in Show is a

puppy which has competed and is unbeaten by any other puppy exhibited at the same show. A puppy is a dog of six and not exceeding twelve calendar months of age on the first day of the Show. Where the Best in Show is a puppy it should automatically be awarded Best Puppy in Show. Where the Reserve Best in Show is a puppy which has only been beaten by an adult dog it should also automatically be Best Puppy in Show. Consequently, selection of Best Puppy in Show must follow the selection of Best in Show.

11. Best in Show Best in Show must be selected from the exhibits declared Best of Sex but only if they have received a first prize in a class at the same show. If a Reserve Best in Show is to be selected, the eligible

Exhibit at our 2018 Championship Show and be a winner....The BCC are pleased to contribute towards the cost of a BVA/KC Hip score/Elbow X-ray for one dog and one bitch exhibitor and the cost of one Optigen CEA test at a 20/20 clinic for one exhibitor. All exhibitor details will be automatically entered into the draw, the exhibitor need not be present on the day to win and will be entitled to have any Bearded Collie (not necessarily their own) hip scored under the BVA hip/elbow scoring scheme or CEA tested at an Optigen 20/20 clinic.

dogs are those declared Best Opposite Sex and Reserve Best of Sex to the exhibit declared Best in Show. 12. Exhibits will not be admitted to Best in Show competition after a period of ten minutes has elapsed since

the announcement that exhibits are required for judging, unless they have been unavoidably delayed by previous judging not being completed on time, and then only with the special permission of the Show Management.

13. Exhibitors must not pick up dogs by their tails and leads when lifting them nor handle a dog in a manner which causes its feet not touch the ground when on the move. This is not acceptable. Exhibitors should note that such practice would constitute harsh handling and reports of such practice will be referred to the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulation F11.

14. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

15. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor.

16. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the Board for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy

holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at

all.• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of

water available to drink.• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty

of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended

lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead

to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED.

17. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the Board for disciplinary action under the Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. The use of pinch collars, electronic shock collars, or prong collars, is not permitted at any show licensed by the Kennel Club. This shall apply at the venue or within the precincts of the show.

18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.

19. No modifications will be made to the schedule except by permission of the Board of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine press wherever possible.

20. If acknowledgement of receipt of postal entries is required a SAE should be enclosed. 21. All postal entries must be made on or before the closing date of entries (Postmark) upon the entry forms

enclosed for that purpose. All postal entry forms must be accompanied by the appropriate entry fees of the entry will not be accepted.

22. Should a Judge be prevented from fulfilling their engagement the committee reserve to themselves the right of appointing another judge to fulfill their duties. Exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no entry fees can be returned.

23. No animal other than an exhibit shall be brought into the precincts of a dog show during its continuance

except any dogs registered to assist the disabled or dogs required for educational or instructional purposes or by permission of the committee. However, at the discretion of the show society, a dog brought to the show by a spectator may be admitted into the precincts of the show, with the proviso that those in charge of the dog sign a declaration confirming the dog is free from disease and that the dog will be kept under proper control at all times.

24. Exhibitors showing dogs are not permitted to hold any conversation with the judge during the competition, and any exhibitor who persists in addressing the judge after being requested not to do so by the ring steward, the judge or any member of the committee may be disqualified and reported to the Kennel Club, and any prize awarded to his or her dogs may be forfeited. No person other than the exhibitor (officials excepted) will be allowed in the ring during judging.

25. If in the opinion of the Show Secretary, Show Manager or Judge any dog is considered not in a fit state for exhibition owing to disease, savage disposition or any other cause, the dog may be excluded or removed from the show on the instruction of the show management. Once excluded or removed from the show the dog must not be brought into the show at any time under any circumstances and the case must be reported to the Kennel Club within seven days.

26. The committee will be most anxious for the care and safety of dogs brought for exhibition, but it must be clearly understood that the committee will not be responsible for the entire or partial loss or detention of or damage to a dog or dogs, or any other property whether arising from accident or any other cause whatsoever not for any act or omission of themselves, their officers, agents, servants or others, and it is on this understanding only that entries are accepted.

27. The Officers and Committee of the show accept no responsibility for products advertised or sold by the standholders at the show and remind exhibitors that grooming products on sale may not meet the requirements of the Regulation for Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

28. Any owner, competitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is required to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed show within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches.

29. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event).

DEFINITIONS OF CLASSES(N.B. The word 'dog' includes both sexes)

In the following definitions, a Challenge Certificate includes any Show award that counts towards the title of Champion under the rules of any governing body recognised by the Kennel Club. Wins at Championship Shows in breed classes where Challenge Certificates are not on offer shall be counted as wins at Open Shows. In the case of a dog owned in partnership and entered in Members' classes or competing for Members' Specials each partner must at the time of entry be a member of the Society. In estimating the number of awards won, all wins up to and including the seventh day before the date of closing of postal entries shall be counted when entering for any class i.e. Monday, 29th October 2018.Wins in Variety clases do not count for entry in breed classes but when entering for Variety classes, wins in both Breed and Variety classes must be counted. A First Prize does not include a Special Prize of whatever value.If an exhibitor reports before the judging of a class or classes that a dog has been entered which is ineligible, the exhibitor may choose one of the following options:-

(1) Withdrawal The dog may be withdrawn from competition subject to the conditions of Regulation 20. (2) Transfer a) If a dog is ineligible for a class or classes as regards its colour, sex, weight or height the Show Secretary

shall transfer it to the equivalent class or classes for the correct colour, sex, weight or height and, in the event of there being no equivalent class, Minor Puppy and Puppy excepted to the Open class for the correct colour, sex, weight or height.

b) For an exhibit entered incorrectly in a Minor Puppy Class, Puppy Class or Junior Class, which is over age but under twelve calendar months of age, eighteen calendar months of age or 24 calendar months

of age respectively, the Show Secretary shall transfer the exhibit to the Puppy Class, Junior Class or Yearling Class respectively for the correct colour, sex, weight or height and in the event of there being no Puppy, Junior or Yearling Class to the Open Class for the correct colour, sex, weight or height.

c) For any reason other than the above, the Show Secretary shall transfer it to the Open Class for the correct colour, sex, weight or height.

d) If an exhibit arrives late and misses a class, even if it is the only class in which the dog is entered, the dog may not be transferred to any other class.

MINOR PUPPY For dogs of six and not exceeding nine calendar months of age on the first day of the Show.PUPPY For dogs of six and not exceeding twelve calendar months of age on the first day of the Show.JUNIOR For dogs of six and not exceeding eighteen calendar months of age on the first day of the Show.YEARLING For dogs of twelve and not exceeding twenty four calendar months of age on the first day of the Show.MAIDEN For dogs which have not won a Challenge Certificate or a First Prize at an Open or Championship show

(Minor Puppy, Special Minor Puppy, Puppy and Special Puppy classes excepted, whether restricted or not).NOVICE For dogs which have not won a Challenge Certificate or three or more First Prizes at Open and

Championship Shows (Minor Puppy, Special Minor Puppy, Puppy and Special Puppy classes excepted, whether restricted or not).

DEBUTANT For dogs which have not won a Challenge Certificate or a First Prize at a Championship Shows where Challenge Certificates were offered for the breed (Minor Puppy, Special Minor Puppy, Puppy, Special Puppy Classes excepted, whether restricted or not).

GRADUATE For dogs which have not won a Challenge Certificate or 4 or more First Prizes at Championship Shows in Graduate, Post Graduate, Minor Limit, Mid Limit, Limit and Open Classes whether restricted or not where Challenge Certificates were offered for the breed.

POST GRADUATE For dogs which have not won a Challenge Certificate or 5 or more First Prizes at Championship Shows in Post Graduate, Minor Limit, Mid Limit, Limit and Open Classes whether restricted or not where Challenge Certificates were offered for the breed.

MID LIMIT For dogs which have not become show Champions under Kennel Club Regulations or under the rules of any governing body recognised by the Kennel Club, or won 3 or more CC/CACIB/CAC/Green Stars or won five or more First Prizes in all at Championship Shows in Mid Limit, Limit or Open Classes confined to the breed, whether restricted or not, at shows where Challenge Certificates were offered for the breed.

LIMIT For dogs which have not become show Champions under the Kennel Club Regulations or under the rules of any governing body recognised by the Kennel Club, or won 3 or more CC/CACIB/CAC/Green Stars or won 7 or more First Prizes in all at Championship Shows in Limit or Open Classes confined to the Breed, whether restricted or not at Shows where Challenge Certificates were offered for the breed.

OPEN For all dogs of the breeds for which the class is provided and eligible for entry at the Show.VETERAN For dogs of not less than seven years of age on the first day of the Show.PROGENY For a dog or bitch, accompanied by at least three of its registered progeny. The dog or bitch not

necessarily entered in another class however, all progeny having been entered and exhibited in another class. The dog or bitch and the progeny need not be registered in the same ownership.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS For owner, handler and exhibit who has not won a CC, RCC or JW.SPECIAL OPEN For dogs who have been scored under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. Winners must

confirm their scores at time of entry and all scores will be published in the catalogue.SPECIAL SCOTTISH BRED For dogs whelped in Scotland.SPECIAL VINTAGE For dogs of not less than ten years of age on the first day of the Show.

ADVISORY NOTICENOT FOR COMPETITION Societies may at their discretion, accept Not for Competition entries. Societies may

accept such entries from breeds of dog not included within the title of the Society and at Shows held over more than one day, such entries may be accepted on any day from any breed. Puppies of 4 - 6 months can be entered 'Not for Competition' at Club Shows. Any puppies within the precincts of the show found to be under 4 months of age OR any dog present that has not been entered NFC will be asked to leave. Abuse of the 4 months rule will result in this privilege being removed.
