1. Zebras are equids. Every zebra has its own unique pattern of black and white stripes. There are a number of different theories which attempt to explain the zebras unique stripes, with most relating to camouflage. Common plain zebras have tails which are around half a metre in length. 2. Zebra crossings (pedestrian crossings) are named after the black and white stripes on the zebras. Zebras stand up while sleeping. The ears of zebras shows their moods. (When a zebra is in a calm, tense or friendly mood, its ears stand erect.) Zebras don't neigh or whine like horses. They make a barking call that sounds like "Kwa-ha, Kwa-ha, Kwa-ha-ha-ha". 3. -How is the zebra able to run so fast? o They have long and slender legs and narrow hooves helping them to reach speeds of 40kph when running. o They only have a single toe on each foot which they walk on the tip of and is protected by their tough hooves. 4. -Zebras Habitat o Zebras are found inhabiting the open grasslands and plains of East and Southern Africa where they spend almost of their time grazing on the grasses. o Zebras have evolved to run incredibly fast so they are able to escape from dangerous predators and so they rely heavily on the open plains for their survival. 5. -Zebras height and weight oThe height of an adult plains zebra is 44-58 inches (112 to 147centimeters) at the shoulder. oTheir weight varies greatly, from 385-847 pounds (175 to 384 kilograms) depending on the species. oMales are about 10 percent larger than females. 6. -Zebras Behavior and Lifestyle o Zebras are highly sociable animals that roam the savanna in herds for protection from predators. o Their strong social bonds can make them very affectionate towards one another, often grooming each other using their teeth. o During the mating season, males will fight fiercely for the right to breed with the females and do so by rearing up on their back legs whilst kicking and biting one another. 7. -Zebra Reproduction and Life Cycles o A relatively slow-developing mammal. o Females not able to first breed until they are at least a few years old. o After a gestation period that can last for between 10 months and a year, the female gives birth to a single foal that is born with it's stripes, mane and also has a little patch of hair in the middle of it's tummy. o Zebra foals are able to stand within minutes of birth which is vital to ensure that they are able to run away to escape from predators. o They are able to begin eating grass after a week and are weaned by the time they are 11 months old. o Young Zebras remain with their mother until they are mature at around three years old when the males leave their natal herd to join an all-male bachelor group, while females stay with their mother. 8. -Zebras Diet oWater dependent. oAdaptable grazer. oAble to eat both short young shoots and long flowering grasses. oA pioneer in the grassland communitythe first to enter tall or wet pastures. oGraze primarily on tough grasses. oBrowse on leaves, which may constitute up to 30 percent of their diet. 9. They tend to stay in groups rather than being alone. Loving: The zebras are a loving animal as they tend to show affection of love and care to their family members.
