The castle of the Crystal Empire sparkled brilliantly in the midday s"n! Ponies pranced aro"nd the

'ingdom( r"nning their daily errands in the market or playing o"tside in the gorgeo"s %eather! )n

fact( everypony %as so b"sy that they didnt notice that seven visitors from afar had *"st arrived

thro"gh the front gate! )t %as si+ ponies and one small dragon( to be e+act!

The recently cro%ned Princess T%ilight ,parkle trotted along %ith her friends( p"lling her

s"itcase behind her and taking in the da--ling scene! ,he loved visiting her brothers kingdom.this

m"st have been her fo"rth or fifth visit so far/ B"t for once( it %asnt beca"se somepony needed

saving/

This time( T%ilight %as here for another reason( and of co"rse( her best friends had insisted on

being there to s"pport her! 0kay( and maybe to sample a fe% Crystal berry tarts or check o"t theE1"estria 2ames stadi"m if there %as time! Either %ay( it %as comforting to have her best ponies

there %ith her!

34hoo5ee/ 6o"r very first Princess ,"mmit! 6o" m"st be over the moon( T%ilight/7 e+claimed

8pple*ack( t"rning to her royal friend! T%ilight ,parkle had taken "p the lead( as royal ponies %ere

kno%n to do! T%ilight f"rro%ed her bro% in concern and looked back at her cre%!

34ell( ) ame+cited! B"t( to be honest97 T%ilight stalled( then admitted( 3)m a little nervo"s(

too!7 T%ilight hadnt been a princess for very long( after all! Even after everything shed learned

from Princess Cadance and the Crystal :eart ,pell( she still felt that there %as m"ch more to

discover every day! T%ilight *"st hoped she %o"ld havesomethingto contrib"te to the Princess

,"mmit!

Pinkie Pie trotted "p to *oin them( a %ide smile on her face and an e+tra bo"nce in her prance!36o"re *"st nervicited/7 :er c"rly f"chsia mane bo"nced %ildly as she spoke! 3)ts like yo" %ant

to *"mp "p and do%n and yell( ;6ay me/ 7 ,he took a soaring leap into the air! 8 ray of s"nlight

glinted against her pearly %hite smile and sparkled! 8ll of a s"dden( she became serio"s and her

face fell! 3B"t yo" also %ant to c"rl "p in a teeny5tiny ball and hide at the same time/7 Pinkie fell to

the gro"nd and c"rled herself "p( rocking back and forth!

Rarity and Rainbo% Dash e+changed a skeptical look at the dramatic display before Pinkie Pie

popped back "p and patted T%ilight reass"ringly! 3Dont %orry( T%ilight! 4eve all been there(7

Pinkie said kno%ingly!

Fl"ttershy( %ho had floated into the air for a moment to stretch her pale yello% %ings( landed

gracef"lly on the gro"nd! 3)m there almost every day(7 she agreed in her soft voice! p front(

T%ilight ,parkle took in her s"rro"ndings %ith *"st the slightest trace of hesitation! Even tho"ghshe had visited the Empire several times before( the first glimpse of the Crystal Castle al%ays

stirred something inside her! )t %as *"st so big and bea"tif"l! 8nd intimidating! ,he took a deep

breath and kept %alking!

8pple*ack( %ho %as trotting right beside her( noticed T%ilights fro%n! ,he %as *"st abo"t to

toss a fe% more comforting %ords the princesss %ay %hen Rarity gasped in shock( stopping all si+

ponies in their tracks! 3,orry( darlings( b"t ) *"st noticed that T%ilights not %earing her cro%n/7

Rarity %as al%ays shocked that T%ilight still felt self5conscio"s abo"t %earing it!

3Dont %orry( Rarity(7 T%ilight ass"red her! 3)ts safe here in my bag!7

3B"t yo"re attending a Princess ,"mmit/ )m telling yo"( if ) had a gorgeo"s cro%n like that

)d never take it off/7 Rarity e+claimed! 34hy( )d sleep in the thing!7

8s soon as T%ilight and her friends entered the foyer of the Crystal Castle( her nerves began tomelt a%ay like ice cream on a %arm s"mmer day! The Empire %as starting to feel a little more like

a home a%ay from home to her! T%ilight attempted to hold her head high in order to give off an air

thro"gh the castle! T%ilight %as startled by the lo"d racket and st"mbled! nfort"nately( being a

30oof/7 T%ilight gr"nted as she braced herself on the chest of a handsome Crystal Royal 2"ard

%ith a bright bl"e mane! :e leaned for%ard to help her regain her balance %ith a small smile on his

face! Then he remembered his d"ty and immediately snapped back to attention in time to anno"nce

her arrival!3:er :ighness( Princess T%ilight ,parkle/7 he pro*ected his voice into the echoey Crystal

corridor! T%ilight bl"shed a little more than "s"al at the attention( tho"gh she didnt kno% %hy! )ts

not like she even kne% this partic"lar royal g"ard pony!

Sunset Shimmer Strikes at Night

0nce all the little ponies %ere safely asleep in their pl"sh Crystal rooms( the castle became

shro"ded in stillness.the kind that only happens in the middle of the night! )n the daytime( the

castle %as filled %ith light and reflections that danced %ith one another( creating rainbo% prisms on

everypony %ho %alked thro"gh its halls! B"t no% every corner %as met %ith a soft( eerie glo% from

the giant apple pieshaped moon! )t raked in thro"gh the glass %indo%s and gave the %hole place a

s"per5spooky feeling!

="ckily for the red5and5golden5maned nicorn %ho no% crept thro"gh the corridor( it %as easy

to hide in the shado%s! ,he %as caref"l to tread lightly on her hooves! 8ny s"dden noise co"ld

%ake *"st one pony.or dragon.and r"in her entire mission! That yello%5and5pink Pegas"s looked

like an especially light snoo-er! The last thing she needed %as some scaredy5pony ca"sing a stir andmessing everything "p!

keep track of them all!

3,top/ Thief/7 T%ilight sho"ted in desperation into the darkness! The commotion m"st have

%oken everypony in the castle( beca"se doors on either side of the hall%ay started to b"rst open!

8pple*ack( Rarity( Fl"ttershy( Rainbo% Dash( and Pinkie Pie all emerged from their respective

rooms( looking sleepy!

3,hes stolen my cro%n/7 T%ilight yelled as she sped past them( %ith ,pike t%o steps behind!The ponies barely had time to register %hat shed said! They d"tif"lly took off in the direction of

the thief as %ell( hoping that they co"ld help! Their friend %as in tro"ble/

T%ilight didnt "nderstand %here this nicorn %as going! The golden pony t"rned and galloped

thro"gh the corridors %itho"t any hesitation %hatsoever! ,he obvio"sly kne% her %ay aro"nd the

castle and had a specific destination in mind! Maybe there %as a secret e+it@ 0r a hiding place@

T%ilight kept "p her speed( hoping at the very least that a member of the Royal 2"ard %o"ld

soon step in! B"t a moment later( T%ilight sa% that there %as no need for that! The nicorn b"rst

thro"gh the do"ble doors of the last room at the end of the hall( and T%ilight kne% that this %as it!

The nicorn %as cornered! )n fact( she %as unicornered/

3,top/7 T%ilight sho"ted as she entered the room( her friends coming "p close behind her!

36o" have no%here to r"n!7The nicorns face t"rned to panic as she reali-ed there %ere no% si+ ponies and one dragon

against her! ,he clambered to the %indo%( looking back at her p"rs"ers! The nicorn faltered(

tripping over her o%n hooves!

:er face fell as the bag %ith the cro%n inside fle% thro"gh the air! The precio"s Element of

:armony %as headed straight for a massive mirror! Everypony %atched( completely fro-en in place!

B"t instead of crashing into the glass as they e+pected it to( the bag disappeared the moment it made

contact %ith the mirror! )t %as *"st9 gone/

8pple*ack gasped! 3:o% did that.@7

34hat did yo" do %ith my cro%n@/7 T%ilight e+claimed( thoro"ghly conf"sed!

The golden nicorn stood "p! ,he smirked %ickedly at the st"nned Ponyville ponies!

3,orry it had to be this %ay(Princess.7 The thief sneered before diving thro"gh the mirror

herself! The ponies t"rned to one another in shock! 8 pony %alking thro"gh a solid ob*ect@ Theyd

seen a lot of "nbelievable things in E1"estria( b"t nothing like this!

Finally( Fl"ttershy broke the silence! 34ho wasthat@7 she %hispered! )t %as %hat they %ere all

thinking! Too bad it %as a 1"estion that nopony kne% the ans%er to!

A Royal Predicament

The Ponyville ponies had no choice b"t to %ake the princesses and alert them of the recent events(

even if it %as the middle of the night!

The ponies and ,pike all gathered aro"nd ="na! The dark princess of the night looked

especially regal in the moonlight! :er starry5bl"e mane sparkled( and the dark midnight h"e of her

coat looked e+tra shiny!

3This is no ordinary mirror(7 she e+plained! ,he pointed her hoof at the glass s"rface %itho"t

to"ching it! 3)t is a gate%ay to another %orld!7 Everyones eyes gre% %ide %ith intrig"e.e+cept

for Pinkie Pies! Pinkies eyes had already been %ide before ="na began speaking!

Princess ="na looked directly at T%ilight! 3)ts a gate%ay that opens only once every thirtymoons!7

30oooooohh! ,parkly(7 Pinkie Pie cooed! ,he leaned in a little bit closer and reached her hoof

o"t to try and to"ch the s"rface of the mirror! ="na shook her head as a %arning( and Pinkie p"lled

her hoof back( only slightly po"ting at being stopped!

="na e+plained that the mirror %as "s"ally kept in Canterlot Castle b"t had recently been

bro"ght to Princess Cadance in the Crystal Empire for safekeeping! 8pparently( only a fe% nights

before( Cadance had observed signs that the portal %as opening again!

Princess Celestia looked into the mirror %ith a trace of sadness in her eyes! T%ilight had never

seen her this %ay! Celestia looked as if she %ere learning a hard lesson( even tho"gh she %as

"s"ally the one doing the teaching! 3) had al%ays hoped that ,"nset ,himmer %o"ld someday "se it

to ret"rn! To come back to E1"estria seeking my g"idance!7 ,he lo%ered her head!3T%ilight(7 Princess Cadance c"t in( 3yo" m"st "se the mirror to go into this other %orld and

retrieve yo"r cro%n! 4itho"t it( the other Elements of :armony have no po%er and E1"estria is left

%itho"t one of its most important means of defense!7 Cadance looked T%ilight straight in the eye!

T%ilight nodded! ,he kne% that Cadance %as right! The Elements of :armony had protected

E1"estria on more than one occasion! 4itho"t her cro%n( everypony back home in Ponyville and

everypony else in the 'ingdom %as left completely v"lnerable! 4hat if "een Chrysalis someho%

came back again@ 0r 'ing ,ombra@ 0r somepony even %orse@ )t %as a horrible tho"ght!

)t %as as if Princess ="na %ere reading T%ilights mind! 3)n her possession( yo"r Element of

:armony %ill no do"bt be "sed to bring harm to the inhabitants of the realm that ,"nset ,himmer

no% calls home(7 e+plained ="na! 3They %ill not have the po%er to defend themselves!7

T%ilight didnt %ant to think abo"t it too m"ch( b"t she %as starting to "nderstand *"st ho%

important her mission %as to everypony! )f the other princesses tr"sted her to do it( then there %as

no %ay she %as going to let them do%n!

Celestia stepped for%ard! 36o" m"st go at once!7

The yo"ng princess s%allo%ed hard and nodded in agreement! B"t before she co"ld step any

closer to the mirror( Rainbo% Dash blocked her path!

34hoa( %hoa( %hoa/7 Rainbo% said( holding "p her hooves in protest! 3,trange ne% %orld!

Cra-y former st"dent %ants to "se an Element of :armony for evil97 Rainbo% cocked her head to

the side! 39 and yo" %anna send her there alone@7

Rainbo% p"ffed "p her chest and looked back to the Ponyville ponies for back"p! 3)f shes

going( %ere going %ith her/ Right( girls@78pple*ack stepped "p to meet her( nodding! Rarity( Pinkie Pie( and Fl"ttershy *oined in as %ell!

The only pony %ho looked happy abo"t it( tho"gh( %as Pinkie! ,he grinned( inspecting the

shimmery glass once more! T%ilight felt a bit safer kno%ing her friends %o"ld be by her side!

3)m so nervicited/7 Pinkie said to 8pple*ack( %ho m"st have been a little less thrilled %ith the

idea of going thro"gh the portal!

36o" do kno% thats not a real %ord( right@7 she retorted at the pink pony! B"t Pinkie ignored

the statement and contin"ed to grin at the mirror!

3)m afraid ) cant let yo" all go(7 Princess Celestia said to Rainbo% Dash( %ho looked annoyed

at being told %hat to do! 3)t %o"ld "pset the balance of this alternate %orld( making it impossible

for T%ilight to get the cro%n back from ,"nset ,himmer!7

Celestia t"rned to her faithf"l st"dent! 3This is something Princess T%ilight m"st do alone!7)t %as time! T%ilight kne% that she had to leave no%( or risk losing her cro%n forever! ,he

looked to each of her friends( %ho had beg"n to gather aro"nd her! )t %as going to be so scary to go

her 1"est! ,he placed a bag on T%ilights back( pres"mably for hiding the cro%n once it %as

recovered from ,"nset ,himmer! ="nas face %as serio"s as she spoke! 3Remember( on the third

day( %hen the moon reaches its peak in the night sky( the gate%ay %ill close! 0nce it does( it %ill beanother thirty moons before yo" %ill be able to "se it to ret"rn!7

Rainbo% Dash and Rarity looked to each other in concern! Three days %asnt m"ch time at all!

T%ilight nodded( taking it all in!

A"st %hen T%ilight %as abo"t to step thro"gh the s%irling mirror( Princess Celestia gave one

final %arning! 3T%ilight( things %ill look very different %here yo" are going! Evenyou%ill look

different!7

T%ilight %ondered if maybe her %ings %o"ld disappear again( then br"shed the tho"ght a%ay!

,he really had no idea %hat to e+pect of this ne% %orld! 4ings %ere the least of her problems right

no%!

3B"t if yo" "se %hat yo" have learned here in E1"estria(7 Celestia contin"ed( 3) am s"re yo"

Through the Portal

)n the last moment before she left the Crystal mirror room( T%ilight tho"ght she heard the ponies

screaming ,pikes name! B"t no% that she %as t"mbling thro"gh the air( t%isting and flipping

thro"gh some "nkno%n vorte+( it %as hard to tell! ,he co"ldnt foc"s on anything( let alone fig"re

o"t %hat had happened to him! Ouch!T%ilight tho"ght as her body contorted and stretched! ,he

co"ldnt see m"ch! A"st flashes of light( colors( and a bl"rry green5and5p"rple thing9

3,pike/7 T%ilight tried to yell( b"t nothing happened! :e t"mbled alongside her( s1"ishing and

stretching! B"t maybe she %as dreaming and he %asnt really there at all! FLS!8 %hite light

flooded T%ilights vision!

T%ilight blinked! ,piky green things every%here! "rass.)t %as *"st grass/

,he felt a bit like shed fallen from the top spire of Canterlot Castle! )n fact( her %hole body%as sore! )t %as probably some aftereffects from the b"mpy ride thro"gh the portal! T%ilight leaned

"p and took in her s"rro"ndings! 2reen grass! Bl"e sky! 8 marble stat"e of a pony rearing "p on its

hind legs( in front of a massive red castle! ,o far( the strange ne% %orld seemed pretty m"ch like

E1"estria!

T%ilight noticed that the base of the stat"e looked shiny! )t %as almost as if it %ere made from

the same mirrored material as the portal back in the Crystal Empire! A"dging on %here she %as no%

sitting( it %as a good bet that this %as the other end of it/ Three days( she reminded herself! Or

thirty more moons.

3h9 T%ilight97 ,pikes voice %as coming from some%here! ,o he washere after all! The

little sto%a%ay/

3,pike( yo"re not s"pposed to.7 T%ilight scolded( looking aro"nd for her dragon companion!T%ilight gasped %hen she sa% the creat"re ne+t to her! )t %asnt a dragon at all/

3,pike@ 8re yo" a9 dog@7 T%ilight said to the little p"rple m"tt %earing a spiked collar! :is

tail %agged invol"ntarily!

3) think so(7 the dog version of ,pike replied! :e scr"nched "p his face! 3B"t ) have no idea

%hatyouare!7

Before T%ilight co"ld ask him %hat he meant( she reached o"t her hoof to prop herself "p!

0nly it %asnt a hoof/

38aaaaaaaaaaaaahhh//7 T%ilight screamed( looking at the things on the ends of her limbs! They

%ere flat and had five sticks e+tending o"t from each of them! ,he %iggled them back and forth!

They %orked/ 4ere these9 3hands7@ ,he had read abo"t them some%here before!

T%ilight bro"ght her ne% hands to her face to m"ffle her cries! ,he needed to get it together! )fher hooves looked like this.she co"ldnt imagine %hat the rest of her body looked like! ,he looked

do%n at her torso! ,he %as %earing a light bl"e shirt and a po"fy p"rple skirt! 0n the left side of her

skirt( a pict"re of her c"tie mark.a large pink star %ith five little %hite stars.%as stitched into the

material/ )nteresting!

36o" look like yo"! 0nly not yo"! 6o"r m"--le is really small(7 ,pike observed( trying to calm

her do%n! T%ilight reached "p and to"ched her face! :e %as right.her m"--le had completely

shr"nk do%n( and no% she only had a small nose( high "p on her face! 4hat sort of dark magic %as

this@ T%ilight needed to find the cro%n and get back to normal as fast as possible! This %as *"st too

%eird!

38re yo" going to scream again@7 asked ,pike( looking a little too am"sed for T%ilights

liking! ,he shook her head! )t %as time to foc"s!3,o( ) dont kno% %here %e are(7 she said! 3B"t that m"st be the gate%ay back to E1"estria!7

,he pointed to the base of the stat"e! 34e need to get back here as soon as %e find the cro%n! )

these ne% hooves! ,he felt like a foal learning to %alk! )t m"st have looked really odd( too( beca"se

36eah( ) dont think thats ho% the ne% yo" is s"pposed to97 ,pike tried not to la"gh! :e %as

en*oying this a little too m"ch! :e pointed o"t a t%o5legged creat"re nearby( %alking a dog like him

on a leash! 3,ee@ ) %alk on all fo"rs( %hile yo" %alk on t%o(7 he said!T%ilight leaned back on her hind legs! This act"ally felt a little more comfortable! T%ilight

took several steps for%ard on *"st t%o legs! ,he started to move across the grass %ith ease! :o%

pec"liar!

Thinking back to the night before( T%ilight co"ldnt believe shed been %orrying so m"ch

abo"t *"st wings!

Storming the Castle

0nce shed gotten over the initial shock of being completely hornless( T%ilight reali-ed that the

main doors had been "nlocked all along/ ,he *"st needed to give them a p"sh! ,he and ,pike

entered the castle( caref"l to avoid being seen by any royal g"ards! This kingdom and everything

abo"t it %as mysterio"s.there %as no %ay T%ilight %as risking being thro%n in a d"ngeon and

trapped for thirty moons! %ho strangely resembled Diamond Tiara from

back in Ponyville? sent T%ilight st"mbling directly into someone else! T%ilight soon lost control

and contin"ed to ping5pong thro"gh the bodies "ntil a helpf"l arm reached o"t to break her fall!

36o" okay@7 the bl"e5haired boy creat"re said thro"gh a concerned e+pression! )t %as all she

co"ld do to nod a response and back a%ay from him! This %as the b"siest castle shed ever seen!

T%ilight %as completely over%helmed!

8s if hed read her mind( ,pike %hispered( 3) dont think this is a castle!7 8s she %atched the

girls and boys all aro"nd her.talking( la"ghing( and slamming tiny metal doors on the %all.

T%ilight silently agreed that the dragon t"rned dog might *"st be right! B"t if it %asnt a castle( then%hy did it need a cro%n@

The hall%ay cro%d %as starting to thin o"t( so T%ilight didnt feel as panicky! ,he had been so

b"sy getting "sed to this strange realm %ith its t%o5legged animals( she %as %asting precio"s

cro%n5finding time! ,he took a co"ple of deep breaths and tried to determine her ne+t move!

T%ilight s"rveyed the area %ith ca"tion( peeping in all directions like a spy! ,pike *"st shr"gged

and th"mped his ne% tail!

3)m really sorry(7 %himpered a tiny voice from aro"nd the corner! 3) *"st fo"nd it and tho"ght

) sho"ld give it to her!7 T%ilight %o"ld kno% that soft voice any%here.there %as no do"bt that it

%as Fl"ttershy/ 8nd it so"nded like she %as in tro"ble!

T%ilight leaned aro"nd a set of the green metal locking doors that lined the %alls to get a better

look! ,"re eno"gh( a girl %ith vibrant red5and5golden hair leaned over someone %ho %as definitelythis %orlds version of Fl"ttershy! T%ilight recogni-ed her friend immediately.her light pink mane

and dem"re e+pression %ere "nmistakable! 3) didnt kno% that yo" dropped it(7 Fl"ttershy

e+plained to the other fig"re( %hose face %as hidden!

34ell( ) did and ) %as abo"t to get it before yo" s%ooped in and r"ined everything/ 6o"

legged person had dropped m"st have been really important to be so mean to someone else!
