2017 will be my 15th year with The Gazettes. And yes I still love every minute. A

Self Assessment. Two words that strike fear into freelancers, contractors and company directors alike. If you’re one of the nine million people required to submit a tax return you have until the 31st January 2017 to do it or you’ll be hit with a £100 fine. To help out Self Assessment first-timers or just those who need to brush up on their tax return skills, Oaktree Business Management have put together this straightforward guide to completing your Self Assessment.

1. Are you registered with HMRC? If you have a new business you will need to register as self-employed to receive your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number, without which you can’t complete the return. You can do this on the HMRC website in 10 minutes – you will need your National Insurance number. HMRC send your UTR out to you by post so if you haven’t done it yet get cracking.

2. Get organised. Find everything you’re going to need and put aside a whole day to do it - ideally at the beginning of January. Don’t leave it until the 31st January like so many do – if you come to file and discover you are missing a statement or invoice, you will have to delay your submission, earning yourself a fine in the process. You’re going to need your UTR, online password, P60, invoices and spreadsheets from 6 April 2015 to 5 April 2016.

3. Make sure you declare everything. This could be anything from paying off your student loan to redundancy pay. If you have been freelancing for companies that pay through PAYE you must include these earnings on your return – if you haven’t kept a record ask the company’s Payroll department to send you your P60 which will confirm the figures. HMRC need as full a picture as possible of your situation to be able to assess how much tax you should – or shouldn’t – be paying.

4. Completing your return. The time has finally come. You’ve registered for Self Assessment online, you’ve collected all the relevant paperwork and have locked yourself away in a quiet place for the day so let’s do this! If you’ve done all your preparatory work, completing your Self Assessment online isn’t actually a particularly arduous task. It basically amounts to transposing data from your financial records into HMRC’s system. You’re just filling in a form.

5. What to do if you make a mistake? If you suddenly wake up in the middle of the night in a sweat as you remember you haven’t included some vital piece of information, don’t panic. There is a whole section on the HMRC website telling you what to do if you need to correct something. The good thing about filing your tax return online is that, in theory, you are less likely to make a mistake because calculations are done automatically, and you get on-screen help as you work your way through it.

So there we have it. It’s actually a fairly simple process but if you’re disorganised and don’t set aside enough time to do the form, you could still run the risk of slipping up so don’t put it off any longer.

Places for People Leisure Management Ltd has been announced as the new leisure contract provider for Test Valley.

Test Valley Borough Council agreed to award the 30-year contract to Places for People at a full council meeting on 9 November but had to wait for a legal standstill period to pass before announcing the successful bidder.

As part of the terms of the new contract, which is set to start on 1 April 2017, significant investment is planned to improve the borough’s leisure facilities. This investment will help to provide a brand new Andover Leisure Centre, on the current site, and a number of improvements to the other leisure centres including the Romsey Rapids, Romsey Sports Centre, Knightwood Leisure Centre and Charlton Lakeside Pavilion.

The new Andover Leisure Centre will feature a 165-station fitness suite including a virtual cycling studio, 25m six lane pool with 15m learner pool, dance studios, eight court sports hall, squash courts, adventure play, and café. The impressive new centre will also offer a splash pad and Clip and Climb™ to encourage more young people to adopt healthy habits for life.

Places for People Leisure currently partners 35 local authorities, managing 112 leisure centres across England. Its sites attract over 30 million visits every year and in the past ten years the award winning organisation has built 14 new leisure facilities.

Enhancements to the existing leisure centres will soon be underway with extensive refurbishment work planned including a new state of the art fitness suite at Romsey Rapids and Knightwood Leisure Centre. The new fitness suites will include the latest equipment such as powerless skill mill treadmills, Octane fitness trainers, Watt Bikes, V plates, Total Gym Gravity trainers and functional equipment such as battleropes.

Community and Leisure Portfolio Holder, Councillor Tony Ward, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Places for People has been awarded the new contract to continue to deliver top class leisure facilities in the borough. The process to award the contract has taken the best part of 18 months and has involved a huge amount of work to get the best possible outcome for our residents. I am looking forward to working with the Places for People team over the coming years and ensuring that we continue to deliver the high quality leisure facilities that our residents deserve and expect.”

After the incredible success of its 12th year, the Test Valley Business Awards is After its fantastic success earlier this year the organisers are delighted to announce that the Test Valley Business Awards will return for 2017. The White Horse Hotel in Romsey will host the launch of the 2017 Awards at a free business event in March.

The Awards, which saw 160 entries for 2016, across 6 categories, from business operating right across Test Valley of all shapes and sizes come together to celebrate their achievement, share their stories of success and foster working relationships.

James Dawes of Dawes Highway Safety Ltd., 2016 winner of the New Business of the Year Award, commented upon winning:

Greenbuttercup CIC (in association with the Romsey Dementia Action Group) are pleased to announce that they have received a grant from Romsey Town Council enabling them to continue with their monthly fun Art & Craft sessions for those living with dementia and their carers.

From January 2017, the sessions will cost £3 per person, and this will include instruction and all materials, plus coffee and biscuits. However, anyone who is interested can come along for a free session to meet us and see what we have to offer.

Those attending can enjoy doing a craft of their choice, and are welcome to bring along something of their own to do, if they so wish.

Each time, we will also offer a ‘have a go’ craft and the next few will be as follows: Friday, 6th January ‘Printing’; Friday 3rd February ‘Decorating Picture Frames’; and Friday, 3rd March ‘Painting’.

So, if you care for someone with dementia and think they would enjoy participating in these sessions, just come along to the Green Room at the Plaza on the first Friday of the month from 10.30am-12.30pm and have some fun with art. Parking is available behind the theatre and entry is by the side door (up the accessible ramp).

Romsey Town Council gives backing to Art & Craft Classes

On Saturday 19th November I attended a magnificent concert given by the Southampton Choral Society and Portsmouth Choral Union. They were joined together to perform Guiseppe Verdi’s Requiem Mass. This is considered one of Verdi’s finest compositions and is deeply religious and highly operatic in style. It requires double choir, four soloists and orchestra and each has an equal part to play in the performance.

The Requiem opens quietly and rather mysteriously and the choirs achieved a beautiful warm sound, without their scores at this point and thus they had a focused intensity which held the audience.

The soloists were excellent. Claire Seaton Soprano, Diana Moore Mezzo-soprano, John Hudson Tenor and Michael Bundy Bass-baritone, who had stepped in at short notice when the intended bass was indisposed. However, I found the Tenor to have a rather

“shrill” sound in his upper range, and I have to say the two sopranos stole the show for me, Diana Moore being my favourite with her poise, volume (I could hear every note from the rear of the hall) and intensely warm tone.

The orchestra made a lovely sound and accompanied the singers very well, perhaps being a bit over enthusiastic with their volume in places!

David Gostick, Conductor and Musical Director for the evening, held the performance together efficiently and was gentle in his conducting movements as befits an essentially religious work. The evening ended with the Soprano leading the choirs in quiet unaccompanied singing and this was spectacular. Diction here was particularly good.

All in all, a powerful, accurate performance, done with warmth and enthusiasm and anyone who wasn’t there missed a real treat.

Christmas Cheer – A visit to the shops

New Year has arrived and it’s now time to get in trim, I need a brand new costume for my early morning swim,

I trot off to the shop, I’ll maybe buy a halter neck, Or something sweet and charming, like a pretty gingham check,

Should I try a nice bikini, in a turquoise or a blue? But my reflection in the shop, says a bikini just won’t do, I try a dark grey swimsuit, but it’s tight, and far too small,

Gives the shape of a small rain cloud, and that’s just not right at all,

I try the daring halter neck, but much to my chagrin, My wobbly bits are wobbling; I can’t get them to fit in, I need to collect the children; this is taking far too long,

The shop has problems with their sizing, it’s so obviously wrong

And I’m not sure that a daily swim is such a good idea, As the pool is not that handy, not conveniently near,

And as I look at all the costumes, all discarded, thrown and spread, I realise that I really need a pair of shoes …instead.

‘We are at one of those pivotal moments. We either radically change what is socially acceptable while driving or we admit that we shall carry on killing each other – and innocent children who never lived long enough to drive a car.” This was the stark opening paragraph to Tony Parson’s tabloid commentry on the case of Distracted Driver, Tomasz Kroker, who left a mother and 3 children dead.

This case does seem to have shocked the motoring population into a recognition that ‘it could have been me’. Not just that it could have been me killed, but also that it could have been me the killer! In this case the driver distraction was a mobile phone which, as Tony Parson observes, many of us still use with impunity and with no fear

of social stigma. He likened it to the bad old days of the 1970’s when alcohol impaired driving was socially acceptable – despite the death toll.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said she wanted to make using a mobile phone at the wheel as socially unacceptable as drink-driving, and that the government would work with the public to “raise awareness” of the dangers of driving and dialling.

Attitudes to alcohol and seat belt wearing have changed over time. However, technology and cultural changes have brought new potential dangers when combined with driving. 20 years ago we weren’t all habitual texters, social media posters, selfie takers, In-Car Entertainers, Pokemon Go-ers, or Drive Thru coffee drinkers. These

Local solicitor Lindsay Taylor has joined a number of organisations representing older and vulnerable people to raise serious concerns around the Government’s online tool for creating Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). An LPA is a powerful legal document that allows a person to appoint trusted individuals to make important decisions about care and finances on their behalf, in the event of a loss of mental capacity through an accident or illness such as dementia. In May 2014, the Government’s Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) launched its online LPA tool, which it claims allows people to create the documents without the need for professional advice from a solicitor.But a new report, published by a coalition of organisations led by Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), warns that anyone creating an LPA without taking specialist legal advice faces a significantly higher risk of being left with an ineffective legal document, incurring additional application fees, and even becoming a victim of fraud or coercion. The report also raises concerns around the potential of a completely digital system proposed by the OPG, whereby ‘wet signatures’ – the physical signing of the document – would no longer be required. Lindsay Taylor is a Full Accredited member of SFE, and said: “The prospect of being able to submit an LPA application entirely digitally is extremely concerning, and raises some serious questions around the potential for fraud and financial abuse.”During a study conducted for the report, participants were invited to create LPAs using the OPG’s online tool and other ‘DIY’ methods. The study revealed that:• Some of the forms did not accurately express the way in

which participants would want their affairs and welfare to be handled in the future.

• Documents made using DIY methods were more likely to contain elementary mistakes, rendering them ineffective and requiring additional application fees. A common mistake occurs when an attorney signed and states their

date of birth instead of the date on which they signed.• Following consultation with a solicitor, most participants

made significant changes to the permissions of their documents regarding how and by whom their affairs were managed.

The OPG is actively trying to convince more people to apply for LPAs online, having set a target for the service to comprise 30% of all applications from April 2016 to March 2017. In its latest Annual Report, the OPG even admits it is willing to take ‘risks’ in striking a balance between ‘empowering and safeguarding’. Christmas is over for another twelve months and a New Year is upon us. I’ve decided that the time has come to see if I can rid myself of a few annoying skin problems that have developed recently and are a pain to conceal every morning. A consultation with Dorthe Thomas, my Danish skin expert, reveals that thanks to CryoPen™ - the latest Cryotherapy innovation available at her Spa - she will be able to effectively, quickly and safely remove them.

The CryoPen™ emits a fine jet of liquefied Nitrous Oxide (N2O) to freeze off all benign skin imperfections including skin tags, sun spots, warts, freckles, milia, cherry angiomas and verrucas. The N2O destroys tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid and forming ice shards and crystals that rupture the cell membrane, destroying the cell without harming any of the surrounding healthy tissue. Sounds a little vicious but Dorthe assures me it is painless and even safe for children.

First on my hit list is a blood blister (cherry angioma) which suddenly appeared in the middle of my nose over a year ago. I also have a sun spot on my cheek that seems to be getting bigger and darker every summer. And while we’re at it lets get rid of the Veruca on my heel which I’ve had for nearly 10 years and have tried various times to remove to no avail.

I came across this statement a little while ago and it caused me to pause. It sounded very high minded and black and white. But then I reflected on the fact that Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher and philosophers do tend to spend a lot of time thinking and examining the meaning of things.

However most of us do not have the luxury of time. Our lives are so mapped out. We are meant to have done certain things by the time we are 18, or 25, or 35. By the time we are 40 we are expected to be married with children, earning enough money to keep our heads above water whilst giving love and care to those nearest to us. This leaves little time for thinking and reflecting on our self, examining our life thus far and seeing how we can improve our quality of life.

Counselling assumes that we all have the capacity within ourselves to make sense and heal ourselves. But by being with another person, a counsellor, we can be helped and guided to make sense of what is going on for us. It can give us the tools to examine and continue to reflect and examine our lives as

we go forward in order to restore and maintain our mental wellbeing.

Are you being SMART for 2017?It’s New Year and time to think about making some changes. If not New Year Resolutions, then often some kind of clean or fresh start. However, despite the tradition of making a New Year’s resolution, many people now avoid them as they feel that this sets them up to fail. Experience tells them, that all too often, by setting themselves a New Year’s Challenge, it’s only a question of time before they break the resolution.

So why are these goals often doomed to eventual failure? All too often it’s because the resolution involves a goal that is not S.M.A.R.T and therefore is unlikely to succeed without massive will-power. Will-power is hard to sustain and will eventually give way to temptation because it is constantly working against another desire. A SMART goal works with your desires and strengths and if planned and executed properly, will bring results. So what is a S.M.A.R.T GOAL? It’s a goal that is -

SPECIFIC – sets a clear and well-defined goal. Avoid any goal that is vague, for example, I want to lose weight or be fit or be happy. These are not specific. An example of a specific goal, is I want to lose 16lbs, run 3 x per week or focus on performing an act of kindness once per day, (a key factor for happiness).

MEASURABLE – This means setting dates and amounts when you set a goal, so for example, 1 specific day to clean out 3 wardrobes, as opposed to just, cleaning out wardrobes at some point, which is too open-ended and doesn’t quantify or measure and therefore is unlikely to be done.

ACHIEVEABLE – Don’t set impossible goals. To be successful in any goal, it must be achievable, for example, if you are unable to give up chocolate or wine and have repeatedly tried and failed, then that goal has not been achievable and the pattern of failure undermines further attempts. However, by setting a goal to limit your intake, say, by setting a goal for a set number of bars or units per day or week, then this is achievable and sustainable in the long-term.

REALISTIC OR RELEVANT - set a goal that is realistic and relevant to you and what you really want. A realistic goal is one that, given the right planning, is one that you could achieve. It would be unrealistic, for example, to set a goal of becoming a marathon runner if you have a niggling foot problem. However, it would be possible if you first set a goal of resolving this issue and then another goal of walking a mile. Being realistic, especially when the goal is a big one, means breaking it down into small stages.

TIMED – goals without deadlines will never have a date by which they are achieved, and therefore drift on. A time limit can be a day or a week, and this is preferable to a time that is too far away. Giving up chocolate for two days is very achievable, and that short amount of time is conducive to success and further goal-setting.

Everybody makes goals, although they may not call them goals, because they are often ‘wishes’ or ‘dreams’. This is because they are not planned, broken down into tiny steps and then slowly acted upon. SMART goals may sound a little clinical, but

it is a systematic process that has been tried and tested in life coaching and in the workplace and is repeatedly used because it works.

So how should someone set their SMART goal for January? Before setting a goal, one should:

• Make an action plan – write down what you want to achieve.

• Break down the goal into as many steps as possible.

• Work out realistically how long each step would take to achieve.

• Look at your current habits and lifestyle and list which of those help your goal and another list of those which hinder your goal.

• Your environment – are your living or working in an environment that is preventing your goal, in which case, this might mean changing those things, which could mean putting your main goal on hold, while you resolve this goal.

• Your comfort zone – are you afraid to venture out of your comfort zone, in which case a small goal would be to tackle that issue first.

Remember, the key to successful goal setting and achieving the results that you want is to have ongoing goals. Like list-making, they are a constructive habit, which help you achieve satisfaction and a feeling of well-being.

Maybe we need to take the pressure of trying to become a better human being off our shoulders a little for fear of the weight of perfection becoming too much.In a world where we are deafened by social noise in the form of stick-thin, photo-shopped models and living the perfect life, maybe we should be kinder… but to ourselves. By all means be more organised and lose weight if you want to, but rather try to achieve your goals by simply looking after yourself.Our necks seem permanently craned to our phones or computers and when they’re not our bodies are being pounded by exercise classes or gyms or dashing around to get everything done; kids to school; shopping finished; all in the name of the perfect life. We should take time out for ourselves. We are advised by healthcare professionals to have a regular dental check-up to help prevent problems with the teeth and mouth, an area of the body that is relatively small. However, the idea of having a regular check-up with a physical therapist is alien to many people. Yet, this type of check-up covers a general health examination, followed by treatment of your entire mechanical structure – your skeleton and muscles. A structure, that despite its size and importance we expect to keep going for seventy-plus years with little or no maintenance. It follows that when the musculoskeletal structure is well-maintained with good posture, core stability, flexibility and strength, there will be less abnormal pressure and forces applied to the joints of the

spine, hips, knees and ankles. This could lead to a significant reduction in the potential of damage to those joints and therefore less likelihood for the need of joint replacement operations in later life. In turn this could lead to a much better quality of life, possibly the difference of an active life or one spent sitting in an armchair because anything else is too painful. Ask yourself one question, do you think that your entire body is as important as your teeth?

It seems the norm to only visit a Chiropractor when you are in pain but maybe our resolution this year should be to make regular visits to our health professionals even when we feel OK. Not only will this correct any minor misalignments before they become issues, it will also give us something that we are steadily erasing from our lives… ‘Me Time’. Do not underestimate the power of ‘Me Time’. It is a wonderful resource for mind, body and soul and whilst our lives get busier and busier, ironically, the need to slow down and take care of ourselves becomes all the more important.

So rewrite those resolutions and make sure you take care of yourself this year. Selling cold meat, wines and cheeses from France, Italy and England, the deli called “Luc” has opened its doors to the people of Romsey on the corner of Love Lane and Latimer Street.

Formerly front of house at La Parisienne Bell Street for 25 years, Luc decided he wanted to start his own business. Luc said it was about 5 years ago he made the decision that he wanted to do something on his own and after finding the perfect location there was no stopping him.

Luc, a French National and well known in the local community, has used word of mouth to help promote his new venture…

and he has been so pleased to see a great amount of familiar faces pop in to see him.

Luc has his 19 year old son Louis by his side and the pair are both enjoying their new business. Both of them would like the people of Romsey to tell them what they would like to see being sold in the shop.

This walk begins at a location with

no pub or coffee bar to recharge afterwards, at Rownhams Wood, which can be found halfway between Rownhams and North Baddesley on the Rownhams Lane. As the road swings round a long bend (on the left coming from Rownhams), there is a substantial parking area which is always popular with the local walkers.

The start of this 4.5 mile walk is very easy, but latterly underfoot conditions can make the route seem a little longer.

Once out of the car we head down into Rownhams Wood (photo 1) along a wide trail that gradually reduces into a smaller path and then climbs gently

through some woods. Inevitably, the winter rain can make this soggy but navigable and emerges into pine woodland and up as far as a fence on the left (photo 2) with a Hamsphire County Council ‘Private’ sign on the right. We need to go through the fence gap and turn right following the path round past a copse of trees planted in a circle.

grounds of Manor House Hotel and the next 800 metres of gardens, lake and shrubs are all part of their surrounding environment. We need to walk round the lake (photo 3), across the open field and through the gate into the hotel’s extended car park. Keep going straight onwards towards the entrance gate which emerges on the edge of Chilworth Technology Park.

Taking care to cross this road we keep on the right hand side on the footpath for just 200 metres before turning right beside the Chilworth Arms, down Manor Road, past the Chilworth Playing Fields and then following the road round to the left as it becomes Chilworth Drove.

Once across the motorway bridge we are spoilt for choice of direction, with three options, our route is the sharpest left along the fence line beside the M27 (photo 4). If you can blank off the traffic noise this path is very pleasant for a long while until it drops down into rain washed gullies where there has been a lot of tree removal and coppicing. This has made the underfoot status challenging but not dangerous – and we need to persevere with this route for over a mile, by keeping the fence line always on our right hand.

The path joins a field on the right with a stream and woods to the left, which eventually meet a footpath finger post that aims us right over a gate and up through the next three fields, where cattle often graze.

The field can be surprisingly muddy despite being on the side of a hill, the left hand fence line probably being the firmest terrain! As we climb the fields Rownhams Services are just visible through the trees, but we are not going through them.

After conquering the muddy climb we mount the final stile, turn right and begin our return along Rownhams Lane to the car, which involves a 1 kilometre walk and a pleasant downhill stride to the car.

Essential items for walking anytime:

• High visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times.

• Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes really not recommended.

• A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety).

• For dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags.

The driving offences people often commit without realisingEvery day, many people are caught drink/drug driving, speeding or driving while using mobile phones. Those crimes are well known, however there are other offences motorists may unwittingly be performing every day. Drivers have a duty to ensure they are operating within the law. The Highway Code is freely obtainable to keep drivers educated on how to use roads safely.

Here are just some of the rules you may have forgotten about.

! It is illegal to change your name and address and not tell the DVLA.

! It is illegal not to tell the DVLA of a medical condition, or disability, such as epilepsy, diabetes (all types,) strokes, neurological and mental health conditions, physical disabilities and visual impairments.

! On roads with more than one lane, drivers must stay in the left hand lane unless turning right or overtaking.

! Drivers must not throw anything out of a vehicle, including food and cigarette ends.

! You must not drive on a pavement, footpath or bridleway, unless gaining access to a property, or in an emergency.

! It is illegal to use a hand-held phone when supervising a learner driver, when stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic and when the engine is running even if you are pulled over.

! Drivers must not stop or park within 10 metres of a junction, unless in a dedicated space.

! Drivers must not park on a road at night, against the flow of traffic, unless in a dedicated space.

! Drivers must not wait on single yellow lines, during the times stated.

! Drivers must not stop to drop off or pick up passengers on school entrance markings.

! Drivers must only flash their headlights to tell other road users they are there - not to communicate with, or to intimidate people.

! Your car horn must never be used when your vehicle is stationary, unless another vehicle poses a danger.

! Children up to the age of 12, or until they reach 135cm tall, must use a car seat appropriate for their weight.

! A rear facing baby seat can only be used in the front seat when the air bag is deactivated.

! 60mph is the maximum speed limit for vehicles towing a caravan or trailer on a motorway.

! Any new drivers that get 6 or more penalty points, within two years of gaining their license, have to retake their theory and practical tests.

Now that the festive season is nearly over the sales have arrived. At The Great Shutter Company their largest sale of the year takes place in January which is run in conjunction with the shutter manufacturer. This means the best prices of the year.
