Hello and welcome back to the Bypass Ground, hope you are enjoying the new year and had good Christmas. The festive period has been less than festive - we have managed to complete just one game since we last played at home on the 10th December. The winter weather has really took its toll on Wessex League pitches. However, the one game we did manager was a success. A single goal from Simon De‘ath in the first half was enough to earn us a superb win away to Totton & Eling. It was De‘ath‘s 26th goal of the season - in all competitions - and he has shown no signs of slowing down after Christmas. Simon is still top goalscorer in the league. One of our postponed home games has been rearranged, our League Cup 3rd Round match against New Milton has been rescheduled to Tuesday night, the 10th January with kick off being at 7:45. A couple of our cup runs have been drawn too. In the Quarter Finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup, we have been drawn away on January 17th to Blue Square Bet South side Eastleigh which is sure to be a tough test but defi-nitely not a step too far. Elsewhere, if we overcome New Milton we will face 4th place Christchurch in the League Cup Quarter Finals. I hope you enjoy today‘s game and have a good new year. Come on The Town!

After playing in the war time Hythe and District League the club joined the Southampton Junior League and in 1946 won the Division One title and appeared in the final of the Senior Cup losing to NDLC. However the following season they won the Cup and were Southampton League West Division champions. After this with progression in mind the Club applied to join the Hampshire League and when they were accepted made their debut in Division Three West in the 1950/1 season. Although they won the title the following season, the Club did not move into Division Two until 1956/7. They remained in this division for the next four seasons but were relegated at the end of 1959/60. Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the Club dropped into Division Four, were promoted in 1974/5 after finishing third but dropped back again in 1979/80. Then in 1981/2 the Hampshire League reorganised and Division Four was swal-lowed up by Division Three and as runners up promotion was secured to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two, promotion was gained to the top division, overhauling run away leaders, Lock-sheath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in the top flight the Club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the Club established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league with eleven top six finishes including, three second places and then won the elusive Championship in 1997/8. With the establishment of the Wessex League in 1986/87 Blackfield & Langley recognised that to compete against the best in local football the long term aim had to be elevation to the new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as ability on the pitch negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long lease on a ground which gave the Club the necessary security to develop it to the required standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the Council provided a playing surface that is the envy of many teams. The Chairman at the time, Hans McDonald, his successor Ian Hoare and an enthusiastic Committee set about bring-ing the ground up to standard. The best opportunity came in the Championship year 1997/8 but the funds ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted. The Clubs‘ chance for promotion came two years later. A last match win at West Wight Mayflower earned third place required and the dream had been realised after 50 seasons of Hampshire League Football. After 5 years in Wessex Div 1 the club were rele-gated to the new Div 2 in 2004. Over the years Blackfield and Langley has had their fair share of Cup success. In the 1980/90s the Club made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup to add to the two in the 1940s, ending up as winners in four of them. The last success in 1998 producing a league and cup double. In the 2000 final the Club suffered the agony of losing 2-1 in a replay to AC Delco after a power failure lead to the abandonment of the first game with 15 minutes to go and with a 2-0 lead. The club were losing finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup in 1986, the Hampshire Youth League Cup in 1991 and the Hampshire Youth Floodlight Final in 1998. The Club in 2004/5 became only the second club in Hampshire football to be awarded the FA ADULT STANDARD CHARTER. In 2007/8 the Club were awarded FA CHARTER STANDARD status. The 2008/9 season saw success return to the Club with promotion, under the guidance of Jon Gittens, back to the top division of the Wessex League. Jon Gittens left the club in the early part of the 2010/11 season and Assistant Manager Louis Bell was put in charge.

Blackfield & Langley Blackfield currently lay in 18th place in the league. They are without a win in their last 3 league games. On 4 occasions this season the side has scored 5 goals or more, including their 5-4 win over us. Only on 6 occasions this season in the league have they failed to score. Their home and away form as been pretty similar this season with only 3 points more being picked up at home from an additional 2 games. Romsey Town: A brief history The club was formed in 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall ―to consider the desirability of forming a foot-ball club in the town.‖ Initially they played at Alma Road and in 1889 began playing in local league football where they had successful spells in a number of competitions before joining the Southampton League as founder members in 1908. The 1920s were a good decade for Romsey Town and after winning the Hampshire Intermediate Cup and the South-ampton Senior League they gained entry into the Hampshire League but struggled in the West Division and returned to local football after just one season. In 1930, Romsey moved to Priestlands, which is now Romsey School, and returned to the Hampshire League where they were placed in Division 2. Here the club were better prepared as they went on to produce some of their best attacking sides, featuring well in both league and cup competitions. In 1956, they were relegated and moved to their current home, The Bypass Ground. Romsey continued in Division 3 but the early 1960s saw a further decline in fortune, eventually resulting in relegation from the league in 1964. Because the football pyramid was not yet in existence, the club were forced to drop right down to replace their reserves in Jun-ior Division 1 of the Southampton League and it was not until 1968 that they won promotion back to the senior section. By the 1970s, the club started to re-surface out of the doldrums of lower league football and after three successive pro-motions and a Southampton Senior Cup triumph in 1974. Romsey regained their Hampshire League status in 1975 where they promptly won the Division 4 title at the first attempt. Romsey proceeded to end the decade on a high note, again winning promotion and the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1978 followed by arguably their finest hour a year later when they won Division 2 title and unexpectedly defeated Farnborough Town 1–0 in the Hampshire Senior Cup final played at the The Dell. The 1980s saw Romsey consolidate in Division 1 before becoming founder members of the Wessex League in 1986. Here they soon became a strong force, and after some encouraging campaigns, they clinched the title in 1990 and en-joyed numerous good cup runs, most notably in 1990 when they lost 1–2 at home to Littlehampton Town in the 4th Quali-fying Round. A change of personnel saw Romsey fall into decline, and after a nightmare season in 1993 they were relegated back to Division 1 of the Hampshire League, from where they were again relegated. Despite these setbacks, Romsey bounced back and within two years they had won the Southampton Senior Cup and promotion back to the Wessex League. How-ever, they struggled in what had become a much harder competition. In 1998, Romsey were again relegated back to the Hampshire League and a series of managers and large turn-over of players saw them slip into the league's third di-vision. In 2003, the club hit an all-time low when they bottom but the club were re-elected, and since then they have en-joyed a remarkable upturn in fortunes. In 2004 the Wessex League absorbed the original Hampshire League and due to their facilities Romsey were placed in Division 1 and after some encouraging final placings they won promotion in 2007 back to the top flight, now known as the Premier Division. In the 2007–08 season with manager Glenn Burnett at the helm Romsey's team spirit was at an all-time high. The team were performing well on the pitch as well with two consecutive mid-table finishes really consolidat-ing Romsey's position in the Wessex Premier League. At the end of the 2009–10 season, Glenn Burnett decided to step down blaming his decision to leave on how much he had to do at the club. Assistant manager Lee Harrison soon fol-lowed suit. As well as a large percentage of the squad that Glenn had been crafting over the last few seasons. In the 2010–11 season, backed by the new management duo of Wayne Mew and Stuart Long, began with many trials as Romsey searched to rebuild a team. In the end Romsey finished in 16th position in the league despite a lack of players. One of the high points of the season was Romsey's longest-serving and most prolific player in their history, Simon De'ath, who finished with 25 league goals, placing him seventh in the goalscorer charts. Wayne Mew continued at the helm for the 2011–12 and managed to keep hold of striker Simon De'ath despite interest from numerous bigger clubs—including Winchester City.

Tuesday Review (03/01/12)

The majority of Tuesday's games were postponed due to the adverse weather conditions overnight. However, the local derby at Western Way be-

tween BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS and DOWNTON did survive the weather. Slade and Gallagher put Bemerton 2-0 up at half-time. The Robins

dominated the second half and got a goal back through Nic Turpin with his 22nd goal of the season but much as they searched for an equaliser, it

did not come and Bemerton won the game 2-1. Dan Mockeridge scored twice as FAWLEY AFC won 3-2 away at BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY. Martin

Harris and Leighton James both scored for the hosts but it wasn't enough to avoid defeat to their local rivals. Monday Review (02/01/12)

On Monday afternoon in the Premier Division, WINCHESTER CITY won 3-2 away at LYMINGTON TOWN. Jamie White bagged a brace for the visitors

and midfielder Tom Dunford netted City's other goal. CHRISTCHURCH were held to a 2-2 draw at home to NEW MILTON TOWN. Moss put the visi-

tors ahead after 16 minutes but Ben Osborne levelled proceedings on 28 minutes from the penalty spot. Osborne doubled his tally and Christ-

church's tally as he made it 2-1 on 47 minutes. However, prolific striker Alex Baldacchino equalised for New Milton Town on 76 minutes to earn the

visitors a point. Elsewhere, BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES were comprehensively beaten 4-1 away at FAREHAM TOWN. Wayne Boud bagged a brace

for the home side and Matt Burt and Matt Jones also scored for the Creeksiders. BRADING TOWN v GE HAMBLE and HORNDEAN v NEWPORT

(IOW) were both postponed. In Division One on Bank Holiday Monday, COWES SPORTS got local bragging rights with a 1-0 home victory over local rivals, EAST COWES VICS. Dom Burbridge got the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the second half. Both sides finished the game with ten men after Joe Rayner

was dismissed for the visitors and Craig Insley saw red for the hosts for two bookable offences. PEWSEY VALE and WARMINSTER TOWN both earned a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at the Recreation Ground. Matty Bissett put the hosts ahead when he lifted the ball over Scott Lewis in the Warminster goal, following an assist from Sam Mepham. Vale doubled their advantage just two minutes later when Matty Bissett ran through the defence and had an effort saved and Micky Martin tapped in the rebound to make it 2-0. Lewis Graham reduced the arrears on the hour when he

chipped over the advancing Vale keeper. Tom Taylor then gifted Warminster the ideal opportunity to level proceedings with six minutes remaining when his foul resulted in a penalty. Lee Davidson scored the resulting penalty and earnt Warminster Town a point. VERWOOD TOWN recorded an impressive 6-3 away win at AMESBURY TOWN. Homer put the visitors ahead after just 18 seconds and Haskell doubled their lead on seven minutes.

Verwood made it three after half-time when Homer scored his second. Amesbury pulled a goal back on 51 minutes but Barnett restored Verwood's three goal cushion just one minute later. On 73 minutes Verwood went 5-1 up only for Amesbury to reduce the arrears a minute later. Haskell then scored his second of the match to make it 6-2 on 79 minutes and Amesbury once again reduced the deficit with two minutes left to make the final result 6-3 to Verwood Town.
