Un recom-mends eatIng bUgs for nUtrI-tIon, envIronmentctv.ca - The UN has new weapons to fight hun-ger, boost nutrition and reduce pollution, and they might be crawling or flying near you right now: edible insects. The Food and Agriculture Organization, yesterday, hailed the likes of grasshoppers, ants and other members of the insect world as an underutilized food for people, livestock and pets. A 200-page report, released at a news con-ference at the UN agency’s Rome headquar-ters, says 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diets with insects, which are high in protein and minerals, and have envi-
ronmental benefits. Insects are “extremely efficient” in convert-ing feed into edible meat, the agency said. On average, they can convert 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of feed into 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of insect mass. In comparison, cattle require 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) of feed to produce a kilo of meat. Most insects are likely to produce fewer en-vironmentally harmful greenhouse gases, and also feed on human and food waste, compost and animal slurry, with the products being used for agricultural feed, the agency said.Currently, most edible insects are gathered in forests and what insect farming does take place is often family-run and serves niche markets. But the UN says mechanization can ratchet up

insect farming production. The fish bait indus-try, for example, has long farmed insects.Insect farming is “one of the many ways to ad-dress food and feed security,” the food agency said.“Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly,” the agency said, adding they leave a “low environmental footprint.” They provide high-quality protein and nutrients when com-pared with meat and fish and are “particularly important as a food supplement for under-nourished children,” it said.Insects can also be rich in copper, iron, mag-nesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc, and are a source of fiber. The agency noted that its Edible Insect Pro-gram is also examining the potential of arach-
nids, such as spiders and scorpions, although they are not strictly speaking insects.University biologists have analyzed the nu-tritional value of edible insects, and some of them, such as certain beetles, ants, crickets and grasshoppers, come close to lean red meat or broiled fish in terms of protein per gram (ounce). But are they tasty? The report noted that some caterpillars in southern Africa and weaver ant eggs in South-east Asia are considered delicacies and com-mand high prices. And some people who might not entertain the thought of consuming insects might already be eating them. Many insects are ingested in-advertently.

dIY WaYs to remove KItcHen smeLLs
If your kitchen absorbed the scent of last night’s dinner: 1. simmer orange PeelsFor a food odour that appears to be fading, you can take less drastic action by creating a pleasant smell to overwhelm the unpleasant one. To do that, simmer some orange peels and cinnamon in water for a few minutes. Then turn off the flame and leave the open pot of warm, sweet-smelling water on the stove all day. 2. burn toastThere’s nothing wrong with a kitchen smelling like food. But if a food odour becomes unpleasant, food chemists say the fast solution is to burn some toast. That’s right: Burn a slice of bread in the toaster. That will absorb the lingering odour. Just make sure the bread doesn’t catch fire. Of course, now you have a kitchen that smells like burned toast, but this odour at least won’t linger long.
fridge stink?start with baking soda, charcoal or coffeeThe first course of action is the obvious one: Quickly sniff out the malodorous culprit lurking in your fridge and get rid of it. To absorb lingering odours, baking soda really works. You may already keep an open box in your refrigerator to prevent bad smells. But to get rid of a smell that’s already there, pour a cup of fresh baking soda onto a plate and leave it inside the fridge for a day. For stronger odours, fill a plate with dry un-used coffee grounds and leave it in the fridge for sev-eral days. Freshly ground coffee beans work best. For sour odours, charcoal often works amazingly well. Just put several briquettes on a dish and let them soak up the odour for a few days.
Hands smell Like fish? try LemonWhether you’ve handled fish in the kitchen or out on the water, here’s a sure-handed way to get rid of that fishy odour: Cut a lemon in half and squeeze each half over your hands. Rub your hands together and rinse.

This Day in history - May 14th1968: Montreal snags baseball franchise
Play ball! From the impromptu games of “town ball” in the 1800s, through Jackie Robinson’s Montreal Royals to the Expos and Blue Jays, Canadians have always been infat-uated with baseball. But getting big league teams to come to Canada proved harder than hitting a grand slam. It took decades of persuading, promoting, wheeling and dealing, but eventually America’s favourite pastime found a home in the great white north. Play ball in Montreal! Today, the city has landed the first ever Major League Baseball franchise in Canada. Thanks in good part to the success of Exp67, the team’s eventual namesake, Montreal will field their first team for the 1969 season. Congratulations pour in from across the country in anticipation of baseball’s biggest stars making Montreal a regular stop. But as we hear in this clip, there’s some grum-bling too from “that other big Canadian city.” • Montreal and San Diego became the newest members of the 12-team National League in its second expansion of the 1960s. The first expansion brought the New York Mets and the Houston Colt .45s (later renamed the Astros) to the league in 1961. • The Expos do not play at the Autostade on the old Expo site, but instead made Jarry Park their home for eight sea-sons. They moved into Olympic Stadium in 1977. • Montreal beat out Milwaukee, Buffalo and Dallas-Fort Worth for the franchise thanks to a persuasive economic case presented by senior city councillor Jerry Synder. The move stunned many who thought Major League Baseball would never expand outside the borders of the United States. It would be less than a decade before the league put an American League team in Toronto for the 1977 season. • After 36 seasons, the Expos played their last game in Montreal on Sept. 29, 2004. The franchise moved to Wash-ington D.C. in 2005, where it plays today as the Washing-ton Nationals.

The photographer for a national magazine was
assigned to get photos of a great forest fire. Smoke at the scene was too thick to get any good shots, so he
frantically called his home office to hire a plane. “It will be waiting for you at the airport!” he was
assured by his editor. As soon as he got to the small, rural airport, sure enough,
a plane was warming up near the runway. He
jumped in with his equip-ment and yelled, “Let’s go! Let’s go!” The pilot swung
the plane into the wind and soon they were in the
air. “Fly over the north side of the fire,” said the photographer, “and make three or four low level passes.” “Why?” asked the pilot. “Because I’m going to take pictures! I’m a photographer, and photographers take pictures!” said the photographer with
great exasperation. After a long pause the pilot said, “You mean you’re not the instructor?”

Things you’ll never hear your MoM say• “How on earth can you see the TV sitting so far back?”• “Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too.”• “Just leave all the lights on...it makes the house look more cheery.”• “Let me smell that shirt -- Yeah, it’s good for another week.”• “Go ahead and keep that stray dog, honey. I’ll be glad to feed and walk him every day.”• “Well, if Timmy’s mom says it’s OK, that’s good enough for me.”• “The curfew is just a general time to shoot for. It’s not like I’m running a prison around here.”• “I don’t have a tissue with me...just use your sleeve.”• “Don’t bother wearing a jacket -- the wind-chill is bound to improve.”• “Sure you can go joyriding with Evan. He’s only had one major accident.”
Suduko Answer Her husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months yet she stayed by his bedside every single day. When he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he said, “You know what? You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business fell, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you gave me support. When my health started
failing, you were still by my side. Well, now that I think about it, I think you bring me bad luck!
