UKRAINE-RUSSIA WORRIES S E N D G O L D, O I L P R I C E S HIGHER

cbc.ca - The prices of oil and gold surged as the world reacted to the escalating conflict in Ukraine, with Russia seemingly on the brink of war over control of Crimea.

Oil prices rose more than two per cent to move above $104 US per barrel, and gold gained more than two per cent to trade at almost $1,350 an ounce.

Stock markets in Europe headed lower on what British Foreign Secretary William Hague has called the worst crisis Europe has faced this century.

In Toronto, the TSX was down by about 40 points. Toronto’s benchmark stock index would have been even lower were it not for

all the energy and gold companies in it, which offset losses in other sectors.

“With news of this sort, gold names could have a pretty good run,” Manulife portfolio manager Patrick Blais said. “The backdrop is definitely supportive. With the uncertainty, I think they’ll keep moving higher.”

NATURAL GAS SHIPMENTSGas exports are a major economic

question mark, as Russia’s vast reserves of natural gas are one of the major sources of power for much of Eastern Europe, and Ukraine in particular.

Russia shipped 133 billion cubic metres of gas to Europe last year, including 40 billion to Germany. That’s more than a third of Germany’s entire supply of natural gas.

“No wonder Europe’s response to the ongoing problems has been little more than a wag of the finger at this stage,” said Kathleen Brooks, market analyst at Forex.com.

Russian stocks were hit hardest, with the MICEX losing 12.7 per cent. That’s almost $60 billion US worth of stock market value wiped out. Russia’s currency, the ruble hit all-time lows against it’s major traders. It fell below 50 to the euro for the first time ever and is below 37 against the U.S. dollar, also a record.

Russia increased its key interest rate by 1.5 percentage points overnight in an effort to support the ruble.

“The only problem is that it didn’t really work,” Scotiabank economists Derek Holt and Dov Ziegler said in a note Monday morning.

U.S. stocks were also lower, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both losing more than 1 per cent.

WHEAT PRICES RISE

The conflict in Crimea is also affecting the agricultural market, as Ukraine and the regions surrounding it are one of the world’s largest exporters of wheat.

The most actively traded wheat future contract has increased from about $550 to more than $650 since the end of January.

“Markets have certainly escalated over there in the last few days, and they’re starting to reflect conflict premiums,” Ag Scientia analyst Lloyd George said.

“Clearly as an importer from that part of the world, you’d be concerned about your future supplies if there were going to be interruptions,” Profarmer grain analyst Ron Storey said.

When Bertha Wilson applied to law school, in 1954, she was told to go home and take up crocheting. And when she applied to a law firm after graduation, the partners debated whether women were suited to practise law. Nearly three decades later, Wilson has earned a place on the Supreme Court of Canada. The National looks on as rights groups cheer for the first woman on Canada’s highest court.

• Bertha Wilson was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, in 1923. She went to university in Aberdeen, earning an MA in philosophy and then went to teachers college.• Wilson immigrated to Canada in 1949 with her husband John Wilson, a Presbyterian minister. They settled in Halifax. • Wilson went to Dalhousie Law School at age 31. After seven years as a “parish minister’s wife,” she said in 1990, “if anyone had asked me then what a tort was, I would have told them that it was a fancy cake that we served at church suppers.” • The dean asked Wilson why she didn’t want to stay home where she had a husband to look after, she recalled in the same speech. “’Look, my dear,’” she quoted him as saying, “’we have no room for dilettantes at this law school. Why don’t you just go home and take up crocheting?’” She excelled and graduated in 1958. • Wilson joined the Toronto Bay Street firm Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt in 1959. • Wilson was the first woman they’d hired as a lawyer, and the hiring came only after partners debated whether woman were suited to practise law. • In 1991, she recalled one of her first clients saying, “I don’t want any bloody woman drafting my will.” She eventually became the firm’s first fe-male partner. • In 1975, Wilson was the first woman appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal. • One of Wilson’s Appeal Court rulings let an East Indian woman with a PhD in mathematics sue Toronto’s Seneca College for racial discrimination when she couldn’t get a job interview. • Wilson was named to the Supreme Court by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau just 17 days before the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was en-acted.• Wilson was the first woman appointed to the court in its 107-year history. A year earlier, Sandra Day O’Connor had become the first woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. • While on the court, Wilson became known as a defender of the disadvantaged. In 1988, the court struck down Canada’s abortion laws. • In her abortion ruling Wilson said, “This decision is one that will have profound psychological, eco-nomic and social consequences for the pregnant woman.” She added, “It is probably impossible for a man to respond, even imaginatively, to such a di-lemma.” • The Charter set out rights for all Canadians and gave the Supreme Court the power to strike down any law that violates those rights. • A 1990 study showed Wilson was the judge who was most willing to use the charter to strike down unfair or discriminatory laws. • Wilson was extremely shy and only gave one inter-view while on the court. She rarely spoke publicly, but in 1990 she gave a speech to Toronto’s Osgoode Hall law school in which she said certain aspects of Canadian criminal law were biased against women.• The conservative group REAL Women of Canada complained to the Canadian Judicial Council, say-ing Wilson had a feminist bias. The complaint was thrown out.

A little boy asked his dad for a dollar to give to a little old lady in the park. His father impress

by his son’s kindness, gave him the dollar. “There you are my son,” said the father. “But, tell me,

Mr. R.B. Jones applied for a position with the government and was accepted. On his first day

the personnel dept processed his records. When asked what the R.B. stood for he informed the

clerk that they stood for nothing. His parents had named him with the initials only.

The clerk informed him that his records could not show initials only so they typed his name as

R. (only) B. (only) Jones. He got his first paycheck made out to Ronly Bonly Jones!
