MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to Flood & Coast 2019! This conference is a unique opportunity for different sectors, organisations and groups to get together to think big and to think differently; to learn, innovate and collaborate in new ways to make the difference we need to tackle the risk of flooding and coastal change. This is the fourth edition of the event and it continues to develop and evolve based on the feedback you have provided. And this is important, as we want to make sure the conference provides what you want and need, and addresses what matters to you most!

Listening to your feedback from 2018 we’ve made some exciting changes to this year’s conference with more workshops and discussions. The focus is more on conversation and less on ‘being talked to’. Sessions on skills, community engagement, business adaptation and incident response, amongst others, will complement our more traditional presentations. Community representatives, academics, industry leaders and public authorities all feature across the three days and we’ve broadened the focus to include more content from those sectors who, though they may not be directly accountable for managing flooding themselves, have goals closely aligned to our own. I hope you find this gives you the time and opportunity to network with the wider community and the essential space to reflect on what we do and how we do it.

In creating this year’s excellent programme, the Advisory Committee has provided fantastic leadership, support and advice. The Committee, made up of partners representing the flood community, has helped to attract over 300 speaker submissions and shape the programme so there is a link to the major themes of the consultation on the draft national flood and coastal erosion risk management strategy. We hope this keeps the conference fresh, topical and influential. The committee has also worked hard on the surrounding events and offers: Flood and Coast 2019 wouldn’t be what it is without that collaboration at its very heart. So thank you to all involved!

Our day one theme will be creating a nation resilient to

flooding and coastal change. We’ll look at the scale and nature of the challenge we face and what we all need to do differently to meet the challenge of creating climate resilient places. Growth and regeneration, business resilience and natural solutions and the draft national FCERM strategy all feature alongside a number of stimulating panel sessions and workshops.

With the recent publication of the 2018 UK Climate Projections the scale of the challenge has never been clearer and I am delighted that the Met Office’s Chief Scientist Professor Stephen Belcher joins us to share the latest scientific evidence.

Day 2 will focus on the importance of collective action to ensure today’s infrastructure is resilient in tomorrow’s climate. With dedicated sessions on planning, development and flood risk, asset management, funding and the unique challenge at the coast, the 25 year environment plan and the importance of collaborative working there’s plenty on the agenda for colleagues in all risk management authorities and the myriad of organisations who support them.

NICK CRANE

Nick Crane is an award-winning writer, journalist, cartographer and geographer, and a lead presenter of the BBC’s Coast, Mapman and Great British Journeys. His previous books include Great British Journeys, Clear Waters Rising, Two Degrees West and Mercator: The Man Who Mapped the Planet and he also writes for the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.

Hear Nick in conversation with Emma Howard Boyd at 1.30pm on 19th June in room 3. Nick will also be speaking at the Flood & Coast dinner on the evening of 19th June.

With recent reports that Canada is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world I’m particularly looking forward to some fascinating insights from Natalia Moudrak from the Canadian Infrastructure Adaptation Programme.

In the evening we will host the annual Project Excellence Awards at the conference dinner. This is a great opportunity to recognise the range of partners and project teams that have contributed to improved flood resilience in the last year. I am confident that the stories you’ll hear will inspire future year’s entrants.

On day 3 we will focus on shaping the future together today. Recognising that we can’t always protect people from flooding and that the coast isn’t static, but constantly changing, we will look at the practical action we can all take now. With sessions on skills, tools and digital transformation to revolutionise our preparedness and awareness we’ll also look at the way we communicate risk, work with others and respond to flooding to inspire action and make the difference we need. With John Englander joining us from the

States to share his expertise on the threat of sea level rise, and Dr Theresa Bridgman from the West Somerset Flood Group helping us better understand community needs and perspective we’re guaranteed a great final day.

Investing in the future of the industry remains one of the Advisory Committee’s priorities and once again I’m delighted our Next Generation panel have devised a programme to help apprentices, graduates and those new to the industry learn, develop and grow. I’m also delighted to welcome back the Women in FCERM network which was formed at last year’s conference. One year on and they are inspiring the conversation about diverse teams across our sector so please do join them to find out more.
