1956 200650th Wedding Anniversary

Joseph and LaVerne Wood********************

All four of our children (Joe, Nancy, John, Eileen), their spouses and thegrandchildren (Jim, Jennifer, Alison) were in attendance, along with myLaVerne's sisters (Joan & Diane) and their families. A delicious festive din-ner followed soon there after. Fifty great years, with all their joys & sor-rows, have passed so quickly. We have fallen in love with new & old rela-tives and friends, so many they can't be counted. We both feel there werethousands of Donnelley acquaintances included in the afore mentionedgroup. Congratulations.................

*******************************We just wanted to say we enjoy every issue of theNewsletter. We also wanted to say hi to all the retirees.

The newsletter always gets us swapping stories of theold days. We've swapped many stories and heard someof the stories many times but we get a laugh out of themno matter how many times they're retold. Of course wemiss working with many of you but are happy to hearabout all of you in the Newsletters. We here in Elgin aregoing through the usual peak busy time when all theretailers and catalogs are gearing up for the holiday sea-son. That means we'll be contributing a lot to socialsecurity to keep those check rolling to all our retiredfriends. There's not many old timers left here in Elgin with theretirements of Neel Kintz, Jim Clowes, Gary Jergenson, and Bill Becker. Tony Myrie has been promoted to VicePresident of West Coast operations so he's not picturedhere. Thanks again for the Newsletter!

**********************************************************************************************************************

Greetings to all from beautiful downtown Homewood, Illinois.

My wife Kathy and I are still hanging out on Hickory Road here in town but it is not getting any eas-ier. Have been retired for almost twenty years now and the legs are slowing up a bit. That's bad because the world seems to be going faster every day! All in all though we are doingfairly well. Hope to make it to our 60th wedding anniversary next January.

The picture below shows what I worked at for Donnelley for many years and you have three guess-es to figure out what it is. Hard to say if there are any around any more.We enjoy this newsletter every couple of months andappreciate the time and work of everyone involved inputting it together. Regret hearing about the passing ofEd Hokanson, a friend from Chicago financial printing.

Good luck and good wishes to all, especially toChicago's old department A retirees.

As usual the November Newsletterwas read from front to back and Iespecially enjoyed reading aboutyour D.C. trip and the words ofJames Bradley. My brother-in-lawKen Kraft was one of the many 20year old marines who never walkedoff Iwo Jima. He was also aWisconsin boy who’s hometownwas Seymour, WI. John Bradley thefather of James was originally fromAppleton, WI,. my hometown, sothe article was especially close tomy heart. Thank you for all thework everyone puts into theNewsletter. It is definitely the life-line that keeps the RRD retirees intouch with each other.

*******Many thanks to you all for putting

together such an interesting newslet-ter issue after issue..

Although we don't personallyknow most of those who appear in the publication, many are familiar names and my wife Karen, whoworked in Chicago Purchasing with Don Farquharson, and I enjoy reading what they are doing.

It's hard to believe that almost ten years have passedsince my retirement. It's disappointing not to see manywith whom I worked in MIS (Corporate) andSelectronic Services (EG) as members in the retirees'club. As far as we know, John Thornburg is still livingin the south suburbs of Chicago, George Duewerth isenjoying Fife in northern Wisconsin and Fred ardDottie Sherman made the move from Elmhurst toJacksonville, Florida a few years ago, I had the pleas-ure of visiting with Brian Burmeister at the NCAAFinal Four Tournament in Indianapolis in early April ofthis year. We hadn't seen each other since his retirementseveral years ago.

As time has passed, many with whom we had con-tact in the first few years of retirement have now passedon. Suchala passed away shortly after his retirement.Rod Brown, Joe Klawitter, and Dorothy Jacobsen, whoall carpooled with me for many years, are all gone.Only Bob Stech of Lansing, IL from that groupremains. It's good to see that Bill Olsen is enjoyingArizona. He also carpooled with us briefly.

All of the people mentioned above as well as themany others with whom I came into contact throughoutthe company were outstanding individuals. They madeworking at Donnelley a great pleasure and a memo-rable experience. Credit must be given, I suppose, tothose in the personnel department for selecting whomthey did.

On a lighter note, Karen and I drove to Seattle tocruise the inside passage of Alaska in May, and wetraveled to Branson, Mo in September. Although bothof us are feeling our age, we are thankfully in fairlygood health. We are anticipating our first grandchildthis spring.

Again thank you for a fine Newsletter.**************************************

We recently celebrated our 20thretirement anniversary in June. It justseems impossible that time and theyears can go by so fast. Mary Ellen & Bill Schulz(Chgo & Willard)

Mansfield, OH*********

Mary Ellen and I drove to the Chicagoarea, saw our daughter, Sally and familyin Western Springs, and a few cousins inDowners grove, and brother fromRiverside. The highlight was the Addisonluncheon, at Alta Vista. We saw Joe and

Pat Tubay, Louie and Elsie Castelleneta, and Bob Smith. I had made printsfrom an old slide taken in Las Vegas in 1956, at poolside with Joe, Bob andPrimo Grazioli taking in the sun. We had traveled to California, in my1954 Ford convertible, taking along all our possessions, including Bob'swork-out weights, in an attached one wheel trailer. (That Kodachrome, was still good, after FIFTY-ONE years!!) Unfortunately, we were unableto all sit at the same table, at the Addison luncheon. NEXT TIME, we willmake an effort to get a RESERVED table for one of these events. Later,we did see Alan Anderson, and Dick Sadek as well as waved to LaddieLamplot. The speaker was interesting. George Wenrich, Executive VPOperations, and newly appointed CFO, was the scheduled speaker. Withthe recent acquisition of "Banta" (BAHNTA, as in car, not as in ape) RRDnow has 60,000 employees. Their mix of magazine customers will com-pliment RRD capabilities. The current emphasis is to get customers to staywith RRD on a long term basis, for which RRD will lock in capabilities, such as marketed mailings for a particu-lar group or targeted consumers.George took some questions from theassembly, such as how is RRD, (askedas "we") doing in Eastern Europe, and inparticular, Poland. The reply, amountedto doing well, with the Euro assisting inrate exchanges. (Somehow I got one ofthe pictures that was taken of you andBob Smith on that “Exploratory Trip”out West. Maybe you can send me a copy of that 51 year old photo andexplain who fell asleep at the wheel?

Thought I wouldfill you all in onmy year from May,2006 to October

2006. I started out with a trip to the West. Alice and Iwent to Peoria, AZ for a grandson’s graduation. Wespent a week there, then drove to Chama, NM to visitanother son who lives in the San Juan mountains,7800ft. up. This is a quaint town of 1200, but it has atourist attraction of a railroad that runs from Chama toa town in Colorado. The train runs everyday fromMemorial Day through the middle of October. It returnson the same day. It’s a very scenic trip. We spent a weekthere with our youngest son. Then we headed forIllinois and Indiana for two more grandsons graduationfrom high school. After staying in Illinois for 5 weeks,we headed back to Florida in the middle of July. I hada hip replacement on September 8th and I am just aboutover that, but I have a little problem with my prostate.I will have a biopsy soon and hope it will be OK. Wetraveled over 7,000 miles on our trip with gas at $3.00a gallon, so we paid dearly, but it was worth it. Ithought I would send a couple of photos I found in myfiles of Dept. A, things in the mid-fifties. Also a photoof my two sons in the Braziles of Chama, NM.

Been busy, doing our best, to remain alive. My stomach, stopped performing. It's one of the joys, of beinga diabetic. Diabetic's, are subject to many illnesses that are able to come into our lives, due to, lesseningour resistance to withstand, them. I wasn't able to eat for 24 days. The worst part, the doctor's I went to,failed to recognize the problem. I was at home, unable to eat, almost no sleep, before I went to the emer-gency room, at our nearby hospital. Spent 15 days in the hospital. $74,240.00 worth??? That's $5,000.00per day. After, I spent 8 days in a nursing home, where I had to regain strength.I have been using isomet-rics to help regain muscle. I had lost 18 lbs. In two months, I'll be 82.Never dreamt, I would last this long.Freda, also has had problems. She is loaded, with new parts. She still feels great for our first hug of theday.I was slated to be a Marine, corpsman, but hearing of their expected rate of being killed, I opted outof the school.Went to become a gunner on Merchant ship. On the second return trip home, we were tor-pedoed, along with many others. We were attacked by a Wolfpack, of 19 subs. In the nine days of a run-ning battle many ships were also sunk. Did you know, most of those serving in German U-boats, were

killed? I was at Iwo Jima, safely on a heavy cruiser. I listened to those trying to get ashore. It was a horror story. Each of theislands we took, cost about 5,000 Marine fatalities. We lost 70 to 80 thousand at Okinawa, but I would not wish to have lostthat war.Had the other guys won, they were not nice people. I remember, being written to, being told of friends that would-n't be coming home. Received varied receptions when I visited their parents. One of my casualties of the war, the morningwe went into Okinawa, I received 6 letters, that the lady I was to marry, was now pregnant, and about to marry the guy thatgot her pregnant. I was blessed with meeting Freda and I am satisfied with the way it all turned out. Saw in the pictures inthe last letter, everyone has grey or white hair. I am still having black hair grow on my arms and other parts of me, but noton my head. I now have to shave daily. Enough, for now. Good to hear of those that write to our newsletter.

I transferred to Greeley early in 1998 as manufacturing manager and after two years went to CustomerService as manager and retired at the beginning of 2002, so it has been 5 years now. We stayed inGreeley for about 2 years and then we sold our house and moved to Castle Rock where my daughterand her family lives. We are about twenty minutes out of downtown Denver, so are pretty close toabout anything that we would want. We bought a 3 year old home in Castle Rock which has openspace in the back and a great view of the mountains. I spent most of the first two years putting in newflooring and finishing my daughter's basement and then our basement. I have been playing golf aboutonce a week with three other guys that are retired. I haven't been back the Dwight plant but one timesince I left. Dale Freeman and I had a meeting there and then I went on to St. Louis to SWB for ameeting. I get back that way about 1-2 times a year to see our grandson in Coal City, but never seemto have time to stop at the plant. Anyway keep up the great work on the newsletter. I enjoy readingabout some of the folks that I know from time to time. I wish more Dwight people would write in.

On November 14, eighteen members ofthe Shenandoah Valley Chapter of TheLakeside Press Retired Employee'sClub enjoyed breakfast and a plant tourhosted by V. P. and Plant Manager, DonHensley of the HarrisonburgManufacturing Division. Don alsopassed out Donnelley Harrisonburgsweatshirts to us as a memento of ourvisit. All of us were amazed to see themany changes that had taken place inthe plant since our retirement.Watching the mechanical stackersflawlessly handle the flow of signa-tures coming off the presses was par-ticularly impressive! (Yup, just a twoperson crew with no humans musclingthe product onto pallets). Watching thebig new Timson presses basically"plate themselves" was also a mar-vel.The hoist trucks have lost none of their speed in hustlingdown the aisles, so we were all alert in crossing the trafficpatterns. We owe Don and his team a special thanks for theirhospitality! The next Club meeting will be a breakfast onMarch 13th at 9AM at the Courtyard by Marriott inHarrisonburg. All retirees, spouses and guests are welcome.

Lakeside Press Retired Employees ClubJanuary 10, 2007

Meeting called to order by Ed Grudowski at 10:15AM.

Bill Novorelsky gave the invocation,.

Joan Mrozek read the minutes from the last meeting held on December 13, 2006.

A question regarding the RRD Classics was asked. Ed Grudowski told us that the Classics would be mailed some-time between the end of January and February 15th. Susan Levy is still handling the issuing of the Classics.

George Wenrich introduced our speakers for the month: Dee Dee Stapleton, Director and Paul Sollitto, VicePresident from the Benefits Center of RR Donnelley.

Questions asked from the floor:

Why have the prescription costs gone so high this year:

Response from Paul Sollitto: The program has gone from co-pay to co-insurance basis in an effort to keep the cost lower forthe medical program. All active and retirees are paying thesame costs for this insurance. Another reason is the cost ofdrugs continue to rise.

Question: Why aren’t we given a cost of living increase to ourpension:

The monies held in trust for the continuance of pension payouts has not warranted any sort of increase to retirees.

Question: Regarding the Benefits Enrollment Pamphlet, why wasn’t more information supplied in the bookletre a breakdown of changes to our plans?

The Pamphlet is really a general information pamphlet that covers 14 different retiree groups and, in an effort tosatisfy all groups, this pamphlet gives an overview of what benefits are covered. Anyone wishing to get moreinformation regarding their own pensions should go on-line and request your "Profile" which will have all yourpersonal information or call the Benefits hotline number to get this information.

Question: In the letter sent to us stating our 2007 Benefits why wasn’t the medical and prescription cost break-down given?

As of 2005 the medical plan is figured as one program. There is no breakdown for medical or prescription bene-fits..

Question: The government has been subsidizing the prescription plans to companies who qualify to get this sub-sidy – Does RRD receive this subsidy? If so, shouldn’t this help to lower the medical costs?

RRD does receive this subsidy. Because medical insurance and prescription costs have risen so much, getting thissubsidy has helped us to not raise the cost of benefits any more than we have done.Meeting was adjourned at 12:00 Noon.
