The students are working hard in their lessons and are showing a great commitment to their studies and the life of the school. There have been some fantastic sporting achievements including members of the trampolining squad securing places in the National Finals and the Year 9 and Year 11 Rugby teams are now District Champions. Huge congratulations to all those involved! I want to thank our Year 7 parents for responding to the recent survey and for attending the Year 7 Parent Forum. Two key issues raised concerned the feedback teachers give to students and some low level off-task behaviour in lessons. I can report that we have been working now for several months with the teaching staff on the implementation of a new marking procedure. Details will be issued in the next edition of Heads Up. I have spoken with Year 7 students in an Assembly about classroom expectations and will be liaising with Miss Gregg to monitor student conduct in lessons. The congestion outside the school remains a concern, and I urge parents once again to encourage students who live in the close vicinity of the school to walk rather travelling by car. Dear Parent/Carer

We have had many visitors to the school over the last few weeks and I have felt so proud to show them around.

Yours sincerely

S P O R T I N G S T A R S !

On a freezing cold evening at Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Football Club, our talented Year 9 and Year 11 Rugby teams obtained fantastic results as they competed for the District Schools cup. The lads faced-off against Chilton Trinity where both teams were victorious and commended for such high quality displays of skill and sportsmanship.

With support from cheering friends and family, Haygrove School lifted the cup once again!

In addition, the Haygrove trampoline team enjoyed a successful day at the Southern Zonal Trampoline Championships with the Under 19 and Under 14 girls novice teams, including individual qualifiers Abi Grant, Siana Lukins and Jayme Love, booking their place at the National Finals which are being held in Newcastle next month.

Jayme, in her first competition at this level, dominated in her category to secure her finals place. An excellent day by our students was complemented by the hard work of our two officials - Isla Hobden and Beth Gyatt.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis

Imara and Bobo are imprisoned in an African rebel soldiers camp. When they learn that a gorilla is destined to be sold into captivity they swear to return it to the wild before it’s too late.

4.1/5 - Goodreads

Attention Parents and Carers! Do you regularly hear "I can't do maths", "I'm no good at languages", "I don't get physics". Yes? Well, your child is displaying

a FIXED MINDSET. If your child cannot solve a maths problem it

is not because they do not have the ability to do it, but more likely that they have not persevered in the face of challenge until THEY CAN DO IT! Work is supposed to be hard, it's challenging, it's, well...work! It takes time to be able to understand and complete

problems with ease. That's why perseverance and repetition (and REVISION) is so important for all!

“I can’t do Maths” “I can’t do Maths YET”

Hiking for Herefordshire Hospice Music Teacher Miss Powell is doing a 30km walk over the Black Mountains for St Michael's Hospice. This walk will be to help the families that are affected by cancer and are currently looking for support through this difficult time. If anyone feels that they would like to contribute,

please use the link below to donate! https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Emma-Powell40

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Miss Mills is developing a Kitchen Garden for Haygrove School! Having secured a grant from the district council, the aim is to create a space to grow fresh produce to use within the school. Therefore, over the next coming weeks, we are looking for volunteers to come and get stuck in, to create this brilliant new feature for the school. If you are interested in helping out please email [email protected]

Exam & revision timetables Exam timetables for Year 10 and 11 are now available to view on our website http://www.haygroveschool.co.uk/curriculum/exams-and-revision-support.htm

We'd also like to remind students that staff are now running a complete range of revision sessions after school! This can also be viewed on the Exams & Revision section of our website. “Revision sessions really helped me and I would recommend it to everyone going through their GCSE’s!” - Ellie Newton, past pupil

NICU Hats Students have been busy in Knitting Club, which is run every Wednesday lunchtime, making baby-sized hats to donate to the Musgrove Park Hospital NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). We’re very grateful for all of the hats we’ve received so far. If any more students, parents or grandparents fancy showing off their knitting skills, please give all knitted hats to Mrs Hutchinson. Numerous knitting patterns

New Catering Provider

The owner of Millennium Catering, who are our current catering providers, is retiring and therefore the school have had to seek a new supplier for food services. An initial 18 month contract has been awarded to Aspens Services who will continue to provide high quality snacks, meals and drinks to our students from 1 April 2017 and maintain the supply of school meals to our 3 local primary schools: Westover Green, St Mary’s and St Joseph’s.

Aspen Services are a privately owned education catering company and is one of only a few contract caterers in the country to have been awarded the Soil Association’s Food for Life Gold Catering Mark. We are confident that Aspens will bring fresh ideas and innovations to our school meals service, whilst maintaining the high level of service that our students and parents/carers expect.

A letter providing more information about new menus and services that will be provided by Aspens will be sent home to all parents/carers shortly.

Aspens Services will continue to offer the existing cashless catering system.

PLEASE NOTE All outstanding balances with Millennium

Catering MUST be cleared by 17 March 2017. Statements will be issued by Millennium Catering to all students with outstanding balances, or you can check your account online via the school website: http://www.haygroveschool.co.uk/payments/online-payments.htm

Students who do not have credit in their account WILL NOT be able to purchase food on credit from 1 March 2017.

All accounts must be IN CREDIT or ZERO by 17 March 2017.

No online payments to accounts will be able to be made between 24 March – 4 April 2017 whilst the changeover takes place, however students will still be able to use the biometric machines to add funds to their account during this period.
