FUTURE LEADERS : OPPORTUNITIES
Introduction
Welcome to the Haygrove "Future Leaders" Programme.
This booklet describes a range of opportunities, most of
which are only available to students in Year 10. Some you
will already know about, you will have the chance to be, for
example, part of the Junior Leadership Team.
"Future Leaders" grow out of the STRIPES Programme you
may have been involved in this year. As part of STRIPES
you learn to be an:
Independent Enquirer
Experimental and Creative Thinker
Self Manager
Team Worker
Effective Participator
Reflective Learner.
In Year 10 you can go on to use these skills to become a
leader, to participate in teams and events and to contribute
to each other, the school and wider community.
There are lots of opportunities for you to take part in Future
Leaders but you will have to apply for any post you are
interested in. You may also need to be interviewed in order
to be accepted. This is just what happens when you look for
a job after leaving school. Again, just like in the world of
industry, you will need to undergo training in order to do
your job well.
Do study this booklet with your family and we hope that lots
of you are up for the challenge of being a "Future Leader".
Junior Leadership Team
This will be the highest
level of leadership
available to Haygrove
students.
In Year 10 you will work on one of the important issues
facing the school. This could be to do with student
welfare, planning, how to use ICT in school, what
makes good lessons or improving the school
environment.
Your work will have impact. You will meet with the
School Leadership Team, Governors and staff to share
and debate your findings. Your work will make the
school a better place.
Being a member of JLT will help you when applying to
become a Prefect. The Head Boy and Girl may well be
chosen from your ranks.
Becoming a Junior Leader won't be easy. You will have
to submit an application and you will be expected to do
a presentation. See the back page for how to apply. Do
not think that only the most academic will have a
chance. We will be selecting the most committed and
will look for a well balanced team.
You cannot become a Junior Team Leader member
without committing to a training programme and you
must be willing to work hard and dedicate your free
time.
Sport Leaders
There are lots of
opportunities to lead,
participate and
contribute within
Sports and PE. You
may well already be
involved and you can
talk to Mrs Bax or
your PE teacher if you
want to know more.
One opportunity for Year 10s is to apply to become a
Senior Sports Leader. Your role will be to take
responsibility for some of the extra curricular sports
provision for younger students. You might organise
and referee inter-tutor competitions or you could be
helping to coach more junior teams.
To be a Senior Sports Leader you obviously need to be
keen on sports but you may not need to be an
outstanding performer.
If you are interested in becoming a Senior Sports
Leader, then talk to your PE teacher but you will be
asked to complete an application, be willing to
undertake training in your role and recognise that most
of your work will be at lunch times and after school.
Language Leaders
To be a Language Leader you need to be a good
communicator and be really keen on learning languages
and want to know more about life and customs in other
countries. You will need to be quite good at languages
but you don't need to be an A/A* candidate.
You will be part of a team helping to support younger
students with their language learning. You will usually
need to be available for one lunch time each week for a
'drop-in' session where anyone needing help can come in
to seek your help.
The group will also promote languages and
internationalism across the school through supporting
the European Day of Languages, setting up displays,
running assemblies and coming up with ideas no one
has thought of yet.
The group will run itself with support from a member of
staff. To do this some of the Language Leaders will
need to be trained in organising groups, leadership and
how to run a meeting. Please see the back page for how
to apply to be a Language Leader.
Güten Tag
Fundraising Team
You know how often there are
fund raising events in school so
you know you will be busy!
Don't worry though; you won't
be running all of them.
You will take a leading role in
organising the big annual
events such as "Children in Need" and "Comic Relief"
but as experts you will advise and guide other groups
who want to put on an event. To make sure events are
well spaced you'll need to plan the annual calendar of
events. You will help to choose the charities we fund
raise for. Younger students working towards their
"Gold Stripes" will be seeking your help in order to
achieve that award.
You will be guided by a member of staff but you'll need
to organise yourselves as a group so some of you will
need to be trained in organising groups, leading people
and running meetings. Please see the back page for
how to apply for the Fundraising Team.
Numeracy & Literacy Mentors
Numeracy and Literacy Mentors are a group of year 10
students volunteer to give up one registration a week in
order to help Year Seven and Eight students to consolidate
their times tables or work on their reading and writing
skills.
This should be a team of committed, approachable people
who are keen to help improve the skills of younger students.
You will also have an important role in raising the
confidence to learn of these younger students.
In order to join this team you do need good numeracy
and literacy skills and you need to commit time to
prepare yourself for each support session. Please see
the back page for how to apply to become a Numeracy
or Literacy Mentor.

Media Leaders If you are interested in journalism or photography, then you may
want to become a Media Leader. You will need to be a good
listener and have, or hope to develop, excellent written and verbal
skills to succeed as part of this new team and, if you want to focus
on photography, you will need to understand the basics of how to
use a camera.
Supported by Mrs O’Halloran, the school’s Marketing Officer, you
will discover and report on the wide range of exciting events and
activities that take place at school, after school and, sometimes, at
weekends.
You will need to work as part of a small
news team, show initiative and creativity
and be driven to produce really high
quality results.
Being a Media and Communications
Leader has the potential to be great fun
and very rewarding as your stories or
photographs could be published in school
newsletters, on the school website or in the
local newspaper. You will gain experience
what it is like to operate in a marketing or
communications role for an organisation, as well as develop your
communication skills
You must be prepared to attend some after school events and also
come along to Media and Communications Leaders meetings. As
part of your application you will need to write a short (200-500
words) article about a recent activity you have taken part in, or
submit a 5-image portfolio of photographs. Please see the back
page for the rest of the application process.
Young Enterprise
The Young Enterprise Team work
together as part of a limited
company selling shares to raise
finance. Then making products or
providing services just like a real
business. Profits made will be
returned to shareholders as a
dividend when the business finishes trading. We actually
encourage shareholders to donate dividends to a charity.
It is important that everyone involved in a company plays a
full part. To join you will need to apply and will then be
interviewed, probably by someone from the business world,
this interview helps to make sure that you are well suited to
the job you perform in the company. These roles will
include Managing Director, Finance, Human Resources,
Operations, Marketing Directors and Company Secretary.
Young Enterprise is also competitive. You will be entered
into a national competition for the best companies with
regional finals in late May. You will make a formal
presentation and set up a trade stall. Winners go through
to a national final in July.
Young Enterprise won’t be running from September, but
has aims to start after Christmas. So do not apply yet, but
think about the opportunity as to whether you will want to
apply.
Young Chamber
This is a recent addition to the
opportunities within school. Although
Young Chamber involves students from
all year groups, the President and
Secretary are likely to be from Year 10,
Young Chamber members develop ideas
for events and make them happen. You
will work alongside the Fund Raising
Team with each group bringing their
own expertise to make any shared
events successful.
Any profits, other than charity donations are kept by Young
Chamber and used to finance future events.
The Young Chamber group are supported by Pardoes, who
offer the expertise when needed.
If you are already part of Young Chamber you'll probably
want to continue. If you would like to join and want some
more information please speak to Mr Feeney.
No written application is required, feel free to come along
and join!
Senior Wranglers
‘Wranglers’ are the KS4 students who are champions of
Thinking Skills in the school. Wranglers organise thinking
skills events for students and staff. They promote and
celebrate thinking skills throughout the school. Year 10
Wranglers wear a special “Senior Wranglers” badge as a
sign of their role.
A special selection conference is held in school in July as
part of the process of becoming a Wrangler.
No written application is required, Invitation only!
Duke of Edinburgh's Award
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) is open to everybody
and does not require a written application. DofE is very
successful at Haygrove School and many of you will achieve
both the Bronze and Silver Award before leaving school.
Some of you will come back to us to gain the Gold Award.
The Award consists of four parts:
Expedition
Volunteering
Skill
Physical Activity.
You may be able to use your experiences in other "Future
Leaders" opportunities to help achieve the DofE Award.
By doing DofE you will also be helping yourself to develop
many of the skills displayed on the map in the middle of this
booklet.
What Can I Get Out of Being a Future
Leader?
The biggest benefit will be from all the new skills,
knowledge, experience and training you will gain.
You will be well equipped to go on and be someone who
makes a difference to others. You will have the
confidence to be a leader and someone who actively
takes part in life's opportunities after leaving Haygrove.
As permanent recognition of the work you will have
done you will receive a Record of Achievement to go
with your GCSE certificates. You can use this to
support further and higher education or job
applications.
Depending on which opportunities you take part in, it
may be possible to gain recognition through the Edexcel
Workskills BTEC at Level 1, 2 or 3.
Applying for a Future Leaders Post
Check out the entries for each opportunity in this booklet. Some future
leaders (all the position titles in green) do not require a written
application. All the blue colour title positions will require an
application.
For these you can choose any format you like. We will be happy with
applications which are:
Hand written
Word-processed
Powerpoint presentations
Posters
MP3 files.
In fact, pretty much anything which allows you to tell us why you would
be a good choice for the job you want to do.
What you must do in your application is include at least the following
information:
Your name and tutor group
The post or posts you are applying for
Why you will be good in this post. Talk about your skills; any
knowledge you have that would help and why your personality
would be right for the job
Why you really want this post. What will you gain from doing this
job?
All applications MUST be handed to Miss Gregg by 7 July 2014. Make
sure they are clearly marked with the leadership post you are applying
for.
If you are applying for the Junior Leadership Team post you will be
invited to an interview.
We will let you know if you have been successful in your application as
soon as possible.
If you have any problems or question about the process then feel free to
speak to any member of the current Junior Leadership Team or speak
to the lead of each of the individual posts.
