CONTENTS UIC & International Division

Underwood International College

The Underwood International College is a prominent four-year liberal arts college which serves as an elite setting within the larger institution of Yonsei University, Korea’s premier private university. All instruction is conducted in English to facilitate the enhanced presence of multicultural perspectives on campus. The

college is open to students of all nationalities and is devoted to educating future global leaders and democratic citizens. UIC is proud to present an innovative English-only curriculum that seeks a balance between a rigorous liberal arts foundation and diverse, often interdisciplinary, majors. Since its founding in 1885 by American missionaries, Yonsei University has taken a leading role in the internationalization of Korean high education. UIC takes its name from the founding of Underwood family, and acknowledges its origins as the first modern institution of higher learning in Korea while standing at the forefront of our rapidly changing global society. Yonsei’s educational philosophy emphasizes the nurturing of leaders who will contribute to their communities in the service of truth and freedom. UIC is a frontier of Korean universities in instituting an English-only liberal arts program that occupies the status of an autonomous college within the university.

International Division On October 24, 2006, the Yonsei University board of directors promoted Underwood International College (UIC) to include two divisions beginning in 2007 academic year. With this decision, Underwood International College has come to comprise two sub-divisions, the Underwood Division and the International Division. The Underwood Division manage the original curriculum of UIC and the International Division supervise the exchange student curriculum of UIC. Therefore, UIC administers the exchange student curriculum and the Summer School in addition to the College’s original functions. The merger of DIEE(Division of International Education & Exchange) and UIC has also merged Yonsei University's Inbound Globalization efforts to allow more realistic achievement of its goals. In commemoration of its 120th Anniversary, Yonsei University launched Inbound

Globalization through the establishment of Underwood International College. Inbound Globalization is Yonsei University's development strategy to transform the university campus into a living global community and educate future international and multi-cultural leaders. The foundation of Underwood International College is part of the globalization plan to increase the competitive power of Yonsei University in the global world of education. The decision of the Board allowed Underwood International College to combine the exchange student curriculum and the general student curriculum, thus created a dynamic common curriculum where Korean students and foreign students, Korean professors and foreign professors can come together for the benefit of all. Underwood International College plans to increase the number of exchange students and bring more foreign students to the university by expanding the range of majors and courses for exchange students to select. Increasing international enrollment will create an atmosphere of a global campus and allow students to have direct multi-cultural interactions without studying abroad. Underwood International College plans to enroll 100 foreign students and 100 domestic students per academic year in the Underwood Division while the International Division will admit 600 exchange students and 1,200 Summer School students per year. Together with both divisions, Underwood International College will rise to the largest international college in East Asia.

For Summer School 2009, the required attendance period is from July 2 (Thurs.) to August 5 (Wed.)

Prerequisite

Some classes list prerequisites in their course description: http://summer.yonsei.ac.kr There is no control system for prerequisites, and students are required to check if they are eligible for the class or not. YISS students should assess their background of the listed prerequisites. If you are not sure, contact the faculty for advice, or request an exception to the listed prerequisite at the first class meeting. Students should have another course in mind as a backup, because permission for an exception might not be granted. Dropping or switching to another course should be done during Add & Drop period.

Auditing YISS does not allow students to audit lectures. To audit, you must first obtain written permission from the instructor. YISS does not keep records of audits and will not be appeared on the transcript.

Transportation

It is easy to get around Seoul by using public transportation. Foreigners can use the subway easily as long as they are aware of the “T-card system”

The simplest means of paying for transportation in Seoul is using the transportation card. Students are advised to use a pre-paid card for the discount and convenient transfer from subway to bus, vice versa. Students can make a deposit to their T card at the “Boramsaem(보람

샘)”, the first floor of Student Union Building or at the subway stations.

Whenever you get on the bus, place your card on the electric card reader next to the driver until it beeps. Do remind to re-scan your card on the machine next to the exit door before you get off the bus for discount. You have 30 minutes interval to transfer to another bus or subway to benefit from the discount system. The interval is extended to one hour between 21:00 to 07:00. The basic fare applies to the traveling distance to 10km but beyond this point riders will be charged with extra fare for every 5 km traveled.

Safety and Health

There is a pharmacy on nearly every block in Seoul, just look for the “약” (“Yak”

meaning medicine) signs. For many Koreans, pharmacists are the first line “medical practitioner” consulted for diagnosis and treatment, and it is common for them to administer penicillin. For common colds and minor complaints, seeing the pharmacist is usually sufficient, but for any persistent or serious problems go see a doctor. The brand names of drugs are usually the same as in other countries, though some of it can have a slight difference.

Severance Hospital Severance Hospital is the oldest hospital in Korea and has an excellent reputation. This hospital is just minutes away. In pursuit of the quality improvement of medical service through the specialization of medical examinations and treatments for the first time in Korea, Severance Hospital manages the Cancer Center, Rehabilitation Hospital, Cardiovascular Hospital, Eye and ENT Hospital, Child and Adolescent Clinic, Emergency Care Center, Diabetes Center, Allergy Clinic, and Stroke Intensive Care Unit. Severance Hospital maintains an International Health Care Center (http://www.yuhs.or.kr/en/). The center is staffed by doctors and nurses who are fluent in several languages, including English, Japanese, and Chinese, and are ready to serve the medical needs of foreigners in Korea. The International Clinic’s reception is open between 9:30 ~ 11:30am and 14:00 ~ 16:30pm on weekdays, 9:30 ~ 11:30am on Saturdays. Appointments must be made at (02)2228-5810 or (02)392-3404 in advance.

Emergency For 24-hour service in case of a medical emergency, dial 012-263-6556 from a touch-tone phone. After the beep, please enter your own number, wait for the second beep, and then hang up. Your page will be returned immediately.

Private Clinics For minor health issues, a private health clinic is a good, economical alternative to general hospitals, which charges international patients extra for English services. English-speaking doctors can be found in the Korea Herald and Korea Times or at the 24-hour Medical Referral Service run by the Seoul Help Center.

24-Hour Medical Referral Service (MRS) The 24-hour Medical Referral Service is available by calling 010-4769-8212 or 010-8750-8212. Medically trained, English-speaking volunteers will answer your questions. The Seoul Help Center (SHC) launched a 24-hour telephone “Medical Referral Service” for foreign residents and visitors, which refers callers to appropriate medical facilities and services. The SHC entrusted foreign, English-speaking medical professionals with operating this new service. MRS is one of the city government’s efforts to improve foreigners’ quality of life, by providing information regarding medical services available in Seoul.
