The new year always brings an anticipation of something to look forward to. A new school, a new job or simply a fresh start. In the Gospel today, we see Mary looking in anticipation at her new born baby Jesus, pondering in her heart what will become of him. As the community of Novena Church – Redemptorists, lay ministers and devotees – we are all looking forward to just one thing in 2017 – the New Novena Church! The last three years have been a challenge, worshipping, meeting and living away from our spiritual home. The new year brings an anticipation of this new church that we have been waiting patiently for. A new year is not just about anticipation. We also make resolutions, a commitment to do what we are anticipating well. We want every new year to be a better year. Could the new Mission Statement of Novena Church serve as our New Year resolution? We commit ourselves to evangelization, authentic worship and service to the poor and abandoned, leading all to an experience of plentiful redemption. The mission of Novena Church is to evangelize – to share the story of God’s plentiful redemption with everyone, especially the poor and the abandoned. Many people today are searching for meaning and direction in their lives and live without a sense of purpose and hope. We believe that the Good News of Jesus Christ can give them meaning, hope and purpose and Novena Church is committed to sharing this Good News through preaching and faith formation. Novena Church is also a place where people come to worship and pray – especially at the Eucharist and the devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help – and we are committed to an authentic worship. Prayer and devotion, when it is authentic, compels us to mission and service of others, it leads people to a commitment to be involved in the daily lives and struggles of people. Paul reminds the Galatians that: ‘God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts.’ This is the Spirit that leads us to evangelize, worship and serve in a way that brings others to God. 2017 will be a memorable year for the Novena Church! And we seek God’s blessing and the intercession of Our Mother of Perpetual Help on this her feast as Mother of God on our communities, our families and ourselves and on all that we anticipate and resolve to do. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peace.
