Water vulnerability
Water vulnerability is when people do not have good access to safe, clean water. This can make them vulnerable to a range of problems associated with poor water access.
Make sure you can explain how dirty water can affect people’s lives and how clean water can improve them.

Where there is nowhere safe and clean to go to the toilet, people are exposed to disease, lack of privacy and indignity. When communities defecate in the open, disease spreads fast and water sources are polluted. Women and girls often have to wait until dark to go to the bush or a discreet part of town to defecate, where they are at risk of attack and abuse. Improved sanitation has proven impacts on health, quality of life and poverty reduction. However, progress in increasing sanitation coverage has been slow for a number of reasons: •Lack of political will and institutional responsibility. •Improving sanitation is difficult and requires people to change their behaviour. •The health benefits are not immediately seen or always understood. •The poorest and most marginalised people lack a voice and are often unable to invest in improving sanitation.

You are a group of people who work in a vineyard picking grapes to make Australian wine. Usually you make good money because Australian wine is very popular. However, the drought means that the soil has become less fertile and grapes are not growing as well. This will mean that some of you will lose your jobs.
You are a group of people who work for the Australian government. Although Australia has its problems all year round, on most occasions you know how to deal with them properly. In times of drought you have to be able to stop people panicking and decide the best strategies to cope with the drought. You have a very important job.
You are a group of people who work for an Australian cattle farm. You all make your money rearing cattle and selling their meat. Beef is very popular in Australia and you usually make a good wage. However in times of drought your cattle do not have enough to eat as the fields are bare. This means you struggle to earn a living.
You are a family that live in Australia. Usually you have no problems and live your life as you like. In drought times you have to conserve water. You are only allowed to use your water at certain times of the day. This is frustrating but you understand that there is not enough water for everyone.
You are a group of members of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. Usually you spend your time helping all animals across Australia. However in time of drought you have to focus on protecting those that are suffering because of the drought. You will also need to raise more money because you rely on people’s donations to run.
