HOW SHOULD WE REVISE?

What we Remember?

■ 20% of what we READ

■ 30% of what we HEAR

■ 40% of what we SEE

■ 50% of what we SAY

■ 60% of what we do

■ 90% of what we READ, HEAR, SEE, SAY and DO

Vary what you do, simply reading does not work. You need to use flash cards, mindmaps, exam questions, etc.

Use several different methods and don’t forget do complete exam questions!

DO’s DON’Ts

- Revise in a well lit area with plenty of space

- Try to revise in a quiet space (low level music can sometimes help).

- Revise in chunks of 45 – 50 minutes with 10 minute breaks between.

- Start revision early and do little and often.

- Vary your revision tasks, and always test yourself with past paper questions.

- Review your notes after every lesson. This will take 10 minutes and saves A LOT of time later.

- Revise in the middle of your bedroom floor in the dark!

- Revise in front of the TV or with music blaring!

- Make your breaks longer than your revision slots!

- Leave revision to the last few weeks or days, it leads to panic.

- Just read your notes and expect it to be absorbed by osmosis.

Using feedback provided by teachers

■ Teachers feedback after every unit test and go through the test in class. Students should make corrections and use the feedback to target areas of weakness.

■ Use the feedback provided from homework and respond to teacher comments.

■ Act on the advice given by teachers during the lesson.

Exam Questions

■ An important revision technique is practising questions

■ They are available online

■ There will be at least 1 question that tests on QWC

■ There will be a number of questions based on ‘How Science Works'

Page 18: SCIENCE EXAM REVISION EVENING · 2017-01-31 · - Revise in a well litarea with plenty of space - Try to revise in a quiet space (low level music can sometimes help). - Revise in

Key Words

■ Most students know the Science, but still lose marks- Why?

■ They don’t know what the question is asking

■ 60% of all errors due to this

■ Teachers will go through key words and terms that all students need in the lessons

■ Students can use the glossary in the online text book to help learn key terms.

Page 19: SCIENCE EXAM REVISION EVENING · 2017-01-31 · - Revise in a well litarea with plenty of space - Try to revise in a quiet space (low level music can sometimes help). - Revise in

Help■ Test your child on the key words regularly

■ Encourage the use of exam questions as part of revision

■ Encourage your child to work downstairs away from distractions (mobile phone, social media, television)

■ Help your child make a revision schedule and stick to this. (Don’t forget to plan in down time).

■ Encourage your child to give themselves small rewards AFTER they complete a substantial chunk of work.

Science Revision Sessions

These run from 3.00 – 4.00 pm on the following days:

■ Monday – Chemistry

■ Wednesday – Physics

■ Thursday – Biology

There is no expectation to attend all sessions, but the more sessions attended the better the outcome.

There will be sessions run during the Easter holidays, more details will be provided in March.
