The Design and Technology department ran another successful Sustainable manufacturing

Awareness Day for the Year 7 cohort. The focus of the task was to teach the youngsters about

using sustainable resources. Students researched the benefits of using natural materials such as

cotton, bamboo, etc. using recycled plastics (not just throwing all of our waste into a landfill site)

and developing the awareness of materials that can be made into safety products.

The students worked in groups of four and had to make an innovative and sustainable health &

safety prototype product plus producing posters and leaflets to promote their product. Once the

groups had completed the design and make tasks they then participated in a Dragon’s Den style

presentation. One team from each House was then put forward to present their product to the

entire year group in the school’s main hall. The types of products created were exciting, fun and

innovative. The students has creatively designed products such as a health & safety high viz vest

for animals, papier-mâché helmets & wristbands with a safety feature to protect children.

“Every year the children’s imagination surprizes me” said Miss Markwell, the organiser of the

event. “ I love the teamwork and the atmosphere, it’s such a delight to walk around seeing all the

creativity. There is also an important message about sustainability and teaching students about

recycling products such as plastics and clothing”

Unfortunately there can only be one winning team. The competition was judged by Mr Cuss &

Mrs Moate who were impressed by the clear and confident manner that Alexandra Ampomah,

Alfie Latchford, Jack Barlow & Ronnie Hardy presented their product. Their product had a unique

selling point and the sustainable features were well illustrated in the design work that they had

created earlier in the day. We look forward to next years challenge.

Our Four Week Programme Plan

1 - here's a tenner! Students will research and decide on a product or service that they’ll invest their tenners in

2 - getting started. Teams will need to source materials or products, prepare sales pitches, and plan selling events

3 - keep it going. In week three students will be preparing and promoting their selling event.

4 - payback and keep the profits. At the end of the Challenge students will repay their £10 pledges plus a £1 legacy contribution

Programme Overview: Five groups of year 7 students were chosen to take part in this challenge. They

were pledged £10 from the Tenner Bank and used this start-up capital to get their enterprise off the ground. They had one month to make as much impact and profit as they could and in true “Appentice” style they possibly could get fired!

Match Report Springwood Vs Downham Academy

Report written by Alfie Johnson (Team Captain)

At first is was a tight game, then Downham found the perfect break, a great save from the Springwood Goalie but

then a solid rebounded volley into the top middle of the net, 1 –0 to Downham. After that goal we realised that we

needed to up our game and make faster moves. Then came our break after our midfielder played a lovely ball

through to our left winger leaving him in the clear, he then put the ball just over the goalkeeper 1-1. We then

continued to play quick balls through, and playing a great possession game these breaks kept happening until it was

6-1. In the last minute of the game the ball rolled through our defense leaving the Springwood goalie one on one

against their centre forward, it was an intense moment, he struck the ball early, the keeper anticipated the shot and

jumped to the left and saved the shot. Final Score 6-1 to Springwood. Well done team!

Love West Norfolk is a new campaign launched this year celebrating all that West Norfolk has to offer. Love West Norfolk aims to create pride and aspiration in the local area, giving residents and

visitors alike the opportunity to make their voices heard across the county and beyond.

Providence Street on Tuesday 13th March 2018 , Mr Cuss accompanied twenty of our year 7

students to take part in the Schools Activity Day. An inspirational kick off to start the day from seven

Billion Ideas followed by some truly engaging and fun activities aimed to inspire different thinking,

creative posters and super prototypes . There was an opportunity after lunch for the schools to

showcase their ideas to the sponsors’ of the project , the representatives of the partners

behind Love West Norfolk. The day was hugely inspiring and engaging and something that the

youngsters were keen to talk about and share their ideas when they got back to school. All of the

students involved with this event have signed up for the forthcoming “Rubbish Friends” campaign

that is being launched at Springwood after the Easter Holidays.

Assembly

by 7F2

On the 5th March 7F2 gave a presentation about pollution. We chose pollution because it’s starting to become a big thing around the world. Pollution effects everything , nature, animals, water, trees, land, fish - it’s all valuable. We are the ones who are going to have to correct the mistakes of generations past. It’s kind of a big deal!

We chose to focus on the effects plastic is having in our oceans and the damage that this is doing to marine life. Our second focus was on how pollution affects us in school. Litter is pollution, crisp packets , empty drinks bottles, chewing gum. We could reduce the amount of litter that we leave around the school site and have some respect by putting any rubbish that we see in the bins provided.

We are lucky that we have two very talented cello players in our form therefore Bruno Adrega and Michael Bramham finished the assembly by performing a piece of classical music. Well done 7F2

7O2 did a Greek Theatre performance assessment to a Year 7 audience today and were FAB! I was MASSIVELY impressed with their efforts in rehearsal & performance, especially those that took on roles to cover absences and those that learnt lines last minute. Well done 7O2.
