Year 3 Italian
During the summer term of Year 3 we start on the basics of Italian as our taster term of a Romance language.
German in the autumn term is a Germanic language and Mandarin in the spring term is an Oriental one.
Obviously it is quite difficult to teach a language without the face to face chance of speaking, and the
classroom interaction for the children to practice what they have learnt, so Children, you may have to try it
with your parents to give you the opportunity of paired conversation!
https://www.euroclub-schools.org/italian-teaching-resources is a good website for learning about Italy as a country
and can be used for research work and language vocabulary quizzes.
Although I generally tell you not to use Google translate as you do not always recognise that the translation may not
be saying exactly what you think it does, for the basic language for the beginner it can be a useful tool for identifying
the meaning, and, more importantly, how to pronounce the word or phrase.
The lesson sessions are numbered but each should probably last 2 or 3 weeks, giving you the chance to learn the
vocabulary, add it to your dictionary (see below), practice it with family in person or friends via phone, zoom etc. and
complete the worksheets. Don’t forget to keep practicing the earlier vocabulary as you move through the weeks.
I hope the following will be interesting and fun.
Task
Produce a fact sheet / file on Italy as a country. Research a couple of themes that particularly interest you e.g.
history / people / famous places or landmarks / food / music – the list is endless. A fact sheet to complete is
included at the end (resource 1) or do it as a hand-written / illustrated sheet, a PowerPoint presentation,

The internet is a great resource for finding extra colouring sheets, wordsearches etc. that will help with
learning Italian. The suggestions above should cover the whole term, especially if the research of Italy –
geography, people, customs, food, etc. etc. is done.
