LO: To research places to visit in Yucatan, Mexico.

The story of ‘The Chocolate Tree’ is set during the time of the Aztecs and is centred around the temple of Chichen Itza.

Chichen Itza is in the state of Yucatan in Mexico and is a popular tourist spot. There are many other wonderful places to visit in Yucatan.

Today, we would like you to have a look through the information on the next few slides, watching the videos if you can, and choose three of your favourite spots in Yucatan. Write some bullet point notes about each of your favourite spots in your Home School book. You will use these tomorrow!

Challenge: Can you think of exciting descriptive vocabulary to describe the different places in Yucatan?

LO: To research places to visit in Yucatan, Mexico.

This UNESCO world heritage site is a centerpiece of the Mayan archaeological scene in Mexico, and gets around 1.4 million visitors a year — the region’s 2nd most popular Mayan ruins. For over a thousand years Chichen Itza was one of the great cities of Central America – located here because of proximity to deep cenotes with access to fresh water. The modern site covers 5 square kilometres of exposed archaeology and impressive stone buildings, surrounded by dense forest. You’ve probably seen pictures of the temple of Kukulkan – also known as El Castillo – because it’s breathtakingly photogenic.

    Visit Chichen Itza!

LO: To research places to visit in Yucatan, Mexico. Visit the Pink Lakes

In a corner of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, about 3 hours from Cancun, you’ll find a magical place where sea water turns bright pink on an epic scale. It’s all down to salt production. The Las Coloradas pink lakes are used for industrial-scale sea-salt production. As the water evaporates, salinity causes an explosion in the growth of red algae, plankton and brine shrimp, tinting the water reddish-pink.You can visit the lakes and walk along their shores taking surreal photos of the pink water. It’s a really weird sight – and, curiously, the reason why flamingos are pink! You may even spot some flamingos hanging out in the area too.

    Snorkelling with sea turtles

Who doesn’t want to swim with sea turtles? Well you can at Akumal beach, just 30 minutes South of Playa del Carmen. This shallow blue-green water is home to 3 different kinds of sea turtles that you can swim with.

LO: To research places to visit in Yucatan, Mexico. Swimming with whale sharks on Isla Holblox

When you arrive on Isla Holbox, the first thing you’ll notice is the greeting party: Cotton candy-coloured flamingos wading in the shallow, six-mile-wide lagoon that separates the island from mainland Mexico.

Here you can go swimming with whale sharks.

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean, growing up to 40 feet long and weighing up to 20,000 pounds. And, you can swim with them! However you don’t have to worry about them eating you, as they prefer plankton. Swimming next to a 30-foot long sea creature, the size of a bus, is a wild experience.

Izamal is built on a series of hills that once housed Mayan pyramids (and much of the town still speaks the Mayan language). There is still one big pyramid overlooking the town that you can actually climb.

Almost every major expanse of wall and building facade was painted a deep golden yellow for a special visit from Pope John Paul II in 1993, and they just never changed it.

You can walk around the town or get around by hiring horse-drawn carriages.

LO: To write a tour script.

Have a look at this example of a tour script to help you. Can you spot some of the features?

Good Morning and welcome to Wardito’s Wonderful Tours! Today I will take you on a spectacular adventure across Yucatan, a state in the south-east of Mexico, on the shores of the gulf of Mexico.

Our first stop on this awesome adventure is the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, about 3 hours from Cancun. Here we can explore the shores of the Las Colarados Pink Lakes, where the water is a magical shade of pink! This is because of the high levels of salt in the water. Get your cameras ready for some fantastic photos to share with your friends. If you’re lucky, we might find some flamingos paddling in the water too!

Next, we travel further inland to the crystal caves of Río Secreto. Change into your wetsuits ready for an adventure through this stunning underground river. As you wade through the crystal clear water, you will be able to spot stalactites and stalagmites. A series of smaller tunnels make this trip unforgettable!

Finally, it wouldn’t be a trip to Yucatan without a stop at Chichén Itza. Once the land of the Aztecs, Chichén Itza is now a UNESCO world heritage site. Gaze at impressive stone buildings and exposed ruins. Of course, your visit wouldn’t be complete without staring at the spectacular El Castillo, the temple of Kukulkan. Our guide will make sure you return with a fabulous photo of you with this world-renowned landmark.

What a superb adventure. We look forward to welcoming you on Wardito’s Wonderful Tours again soon!
