As an extension to our existing opportunities to learn in a digital environment, your child will be introduced to GAFE (Google Apps for Education) this year. GAFE is a suite of productivity applications that Google offers to schools and educational institutions for free. These apps include Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs and Sites, and a GAFE account gives access to many other tools supported by Google. The range of tools offered gives students and teachers online tools that enrich communication, content creation and collaboration.

We believe using GAFE will:• provide exciting and diverse opportunities for students to learn• prepare students for the world of learning that is collaborative and electronically enabled• improve parents' knowledge of student progress• assist students to be more self-managing in the learning environment• prepare students to be responsible and capable digital citizens• provide students with a huge range of methods to express their insights and skills• support the implementation of the curriculum at Cornwall Park District School• provide a platform to support student reflection and goal setting.

All students will be assigned a GAFE account and log-on. This gives each student a learning platform in the cloud (Google Drive) that will allow them to create and collaborate on documents wherever they are. Expectations within this space are the same as those identified through our Digital Citizenship Agreement you have already signed for Years 0-2 students.

GOOGLE APPS ACCOUNTS

In preparation for the distribution of logins to the children, the teachers have been teaching aspects of digital citizenship – including ways to keep safe online, protecting personal information and responding appropriately in online settings. All students will be expected to uphold the school values in a digital environment.

Teachers have the ability to monitor all online activity for students through a teacher dashboard. This also provides a platform for them to easily monitor progress and emails, as well as provide feedback to students. The students will develop a body of work and contribute examples and reflections.

Students will be shown how to use Google Apps and will be provided with unique usernames and passwords. Parents and guardians are encouraged to explore Google Apps with their children by logging in together and accessing their schoolwork stored in Google Apps.

Google Apps for Education is one of the ways we will be enhancing curriculum delivery in the future. Students without parental permission will not participate in any lessons across the curriculum using Google Apps.

School staff will monitor the use of Google Apps when pupils are at school. Parents and guardians are responsible for monitoring their child's use of applications when accessing Google Apps from home. Students are responsible for their own behaviour at all times.

Alongside our use of GAFE, all classrooms and students will be utilising blogs. Each class will have a class blog and students with permission may also have individual blogs.

Each class at Cornwall Park District School will create a class blog to promote student reflection before, during and after learning. A weblog, or blog, is a special type of web page that can be created and easily updated using a web browser. A blog is essentially a website or an on-line space where children can access, display and share learning/information with an authentic audience. Each new entry has its own date stamp. Each entry has a comments section where visitors and other students to the blog may leave their comments for the author.

A learning blog encourages:• intrinsic motivation• student ownership and autonomy• higher order thinking• future goal setting• opportunity to respond to an authentic

audience by reading and responding.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP AGREEMENT - STUDENTS

I AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING

I am a

Cyber-Citizen because I:

• only use the Internet with adult/parent permission and supervision and I know to ask if I am unsure of how to use any ICT equipment

• check with an adult before I give out personal information online

• use my first name only when publishing work on line

• make sure I keep all passwords a secret

• take care of all technologies I use by treating equipment with care and respect (no food or drink close by) and tell an adult if anything isn’t working or is damaged

• do not download any software/apps or subscribe to anything on line or via email without adult permission

• always ask permission from a teacher before using any technology

• will click off a window and tell an adult straight away if I find or see anything online that is inappropriate (rude, racist, obscene) or makes me feel uncomfortable or I know is wrong. I will not show other students

• tell an adult straight away if I’m being bullied or attacked personally online

• search only for appropriate and education related content online

• check with a teacher before sending any form of communication.

It is important that I demonstrate what responsible use looks like while using technology in my learning.

I am a

Cyber-Citizen because I:

• use the internet and technologies for learning tasks (researching, publishing, creating, presenting)

• communicate with others in a respectful, thoughtful, careful way. Even when no-one is looking I will think, “what would my parents or teacher think if they saw it?”

• behave in a safe way which respects and protects myself, property and others.

• will use appropriate names and language online: - be proud of what I put online - add appropriate posts, conversations online - forward only appropriate, and legal material on to others - respect copyright - get permission before downloading or subscribing and before going into other students’ or teachers’ files/work

• think carefully before I write/post anything online about anyone else

• treat others as I want to be treated and ask permission before sharing information or taking and using photos or video about others

• initiate polite, respectful and caring talk to or about others

• do not join in if others are engaging in nasty/rude/bullying talk, even if I think it is only a joke — if you wouldn’t do it face to face, don’t do it online

• seek permission before downloading any material or resources

• validate/cite resources used such as photos and videos etc, ask for permission and use Creative Commons resources (not re-use forms of media such as photos/videos that are copyright)

• tell an adult straight away if I think or know someone else is being bullied online and show support for that person.

I am a

Cyber-Citizen because I:

• behave in a safe way which models respect for myself, others and property for others to see

• know that when something is digital, it is public, whether it was supposed to be private or not

• make the right decisions and challenge questionable decisions of others

• understand and talk about the consequences of inappropriate behaviour online

• keep home and school separate by not accessing home or personal email accounts from school or copy software/information to our school server

• use appropriate language when communicating through use of technologies (no mean or rude words, or any other language that could be read as such).

Due to the nature of online tools, your child's work, with your permission, will be available online and will be accessible via the world wide web. We will only use students' first names and the classroom teacher will write all posts. Only the work, first name or image of students' who have parental permission will be used on this classroom blog.

We are excited to be using this tool to support learning at our school. We appreciate that you may have some questions or would like to find out more about this online environment. The school has two internet safety officers, these are the associate principals. Should you have any queries please contact them through the office.

YEAR 3-6 CYBERSAFETYAGREEMENT – STUDENT PERMISSIONS

I give permission for my child's photo, their work and/or their first name only to be used on a school learning blog.

I give permission for my child to use Google Apps and on-line tools as part of the school curriculum to support their learning.

I have discussed with my child the importance of being a self-managing, connected and reflective Cyber-Citizen at Cornwall Park District School.

Cornwall Park District School has ultra fast access in every class via our computer network.

Considerable planning has gone into this, including the drafting of policies, incident protocols and agreements.

In accordance with these documents and in line with what we are trying to achieve in terms of e-learning, teachers will train children in the safest ways to locate information and make use of this valuable resource.

The school system will be filtered by a filtering service, but as no filtering service is guaranteed to protect against all unsuitable material, the school has the right to monitor, access and review all use. This includes personal emails sent and received on the schools computer/s and/or network facilities at all times.

The safety of children is of paramount concern. Any apparent breach of cybersafety will be taken seriously.

Issues relating to confidentiality, such as sighting student or staff information, reasons for collecting data and the secure storage of personal details and information (including images) will be subject to the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993.
