Monday 1st June 2020 Time – half past

Today we will be revising half past times.

Before we start, impress an adult by telling them what the long hand and the short hand on the

clock represent.

Hours and Minutes

This is the hour hand.

It is the shortest hand on the clock.

This is the minute hand.

It is longer than the hour hand.

The time is 8 o clock.

Half past times

When the long hand points to the 6, it is half past the hour.

Half past times

When the long hand points to the 6, and the short hand points between the 1 and the 2, it is half past 1.

This is a called a digital clock.

The time is 3 o’clock.

Here are some more examples of digital clock times. Can you say them out loud?

Yesterday we learnt that when the long hand point to the 6, we say it is half past. This means it is 30 minutes past the hour.

On a digital clock, we write it as :30 because it is 30 minutes past the hour. Look at the examples below.

Write these times in digital. Remember, half past is the same as :30. The first one has been done for you.

Today we will be adding three numbers together.

When we add three numbers together, it is a clever idea to look for the number bonds to 10 or doubles first.

Look at the sum below:

6 + 4 + 3 = ___

Step 1: Look for the number bonds to 10 or doubles and add them together.I know that 6 + 4 equals 10.

Step 2: Add the remaining number.

The remaining number is 3 so 10 + 3 = 13.

Yesterday, you became experts at adding 3 numbers together. Today you will practice this some more. See if you are quicker at this today.
