MESSAGEPRESIDENT’S

Wow! Bulletin 3.0 has arrived and I’m sure you will agree Darren and Charles have taken our weekly digest to yet another level. I encourage you to proudly forward to this anyone and everyone!

To complement our existing Facebook page Yarra Bend Rotary is now on Twitter. You can locate and follow us by searching @yarrabendrotary when on www.twitter.com. If you have a twitter account please login and follow us.

To complete the final stage of our social media rollout Yarra Bend Rotary is in the process of designing a LinkedIn page. It would be great to ascertain from members how many have an existing LinkedIn personal account as we require at least 5 people to state in their profile they are ‘connected’ to Yarra Bend Rotary for the page to go live.

As always this week’s meeting was lively with our Rotaractors delivering an impressive presentation on their plans for this year and their involvement with this September’s Youth Humanitarian Festival.

As shared on Wednesday, we have seized the opportunity to tour to the new Melbourne Markets at Epping that are due to open at the end of this month. This means our program changes a little with the tour happening next week, Wednesday 19 August. Friends,

partners and family members are most welcome, please remember to dress very warm!

I look forward to seeing you at Epping on Wednesday, I hear the tour guide taking us around is quite good!

Swinburne

2015 -2016

CLUB PLAN

YOUTHHUMANITARIAN FESTIVAL

Jordan Boyle is the President this year and he spoke about Swinburne’s plans for this year and how Yarra Bend Club could assist Swinburne which has 10 members...

Jordan outlined the achievements of last year being: Mentoring pilot, Gombe Vocational Education Centre, BBQs and support of Rotary projects and attendance at RYLA.

This year Swinburne Rotaract objectives are to:

• Support more Rotary Projects,

• Initiate some smaller projects like BBQs and Trivia nights,

• Establish a “token” project (signature),

• Continue the mentoring project,

• Establish a general interest public lecture,

• Attract guest speakers to club meetings,

• Introduce a member’s moment,

• Support RYLA and Interact,

• Increase interaction with other Rotaractors, and

• Attend a Rotaract conference and training session.

What is the Youth Humanitarian Festival?

The Youth Humanitarian Festival is an event that provides the opportunity to learn more about social and humanitarian issues in a relaxed yet engaging atmosphere.

This year’s theme of EMPOWERMENT THROUGH ACTION will be explored with speakers, workshops and stalls all working in various areas related to these issues.

Whether you are looking for inspiration on how to contribute to a better future, want to take your passion to the next level or just want to connect with like-minded people, the 2015 Youth Humanitarian Festival is meant for you.

This years Youth Humanitarian Festival will be on Saturday 12th September 2015 - 9am-4:30pm at Swinburne University, Hawthorn.

Standard tickets $15 per person, group tickets $10 per person when 5+ purchased together$15 per person.

Tickets include attendance to speaker sessions, workshops and social event, lunch, The opportunity to meet people working with humanitarian and social justice organisations and others interested in these areas.

The Youth Humanitarian Festival is a 100% Not-for-Profit event organised by student volunteers.

All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the speakers not for profit organisations.

What did Liz, Brendon and Krishna have to say?

Liz outlined the planned Youth Humanitarian Festival, a two-day event with speakers and stalls promoting volunteering opportunities and selling charitable goods. Last year this raised $2000 for Mayibuye Cambodia and $200 for a cause in PNG.

Brendon said they were looking for powerful and inspiring speakers and already had speakers from One Girl, Hager and Seven Women. The objective of YHF is to promote Rotary offerings, deliver sustainable growth to Swinburne Rotaract and build connections with Swinburne University.

Krishna explained how much he had got out of Rotaract involvement in the year past and his hopes for YHF to further boost youth involvement with Rotaract. The event is a month away but planning is on-track. He said sponsorship of the social event by RC Glenferrie and RC Yarra Bend would greatly assist.

JOHN ORR’s BIG ADVENTURES

BRUGE, BELGIUM

John spoke about his recent visit to Bruges, Belgium with his family. One of the highlights of the visit was seeing the Madonna and Child sculpture.

The sculpture was a central part of the story in the movie “Monuments Men” and has been twice stolen, once by Napoleon and later by Hitler. John said Bruges is a very attractive medieval city and highly recommends it as an interesting travel destination.

If you set out to design a fairy-tale medieval town it would be hard to improve on central Bruges (Brugge in Dutch). Picturesque cobbled lanes and dreamy canals link exceptionally photogenic market squares lined with soaring towers, historic churches and old whitewashed almshouses. And there’s plenty of it. The only downside is that everyone knows. That means that there’s an almost constant crush of tourists, especially through the summer

months. So to really enjoy Bruges stay overnight (day trippers miss the fabulous evening floodlighting) and try to visit midweek (avoiding floods of British weekenders).

There’s a special charm in spring when daffodils carpet the tranquil begijnhof or in winter (except Christmas) when you can have the magnificent, if icy, town almost to yourself.
