YAMMER IS HERE!

VOLUME 16 ISSUE 6, 11 August 2015

yarrabendrotary.com.au

Another exciting innovation commenced its rollout this

week at Yarra Bend Rotary with the launching of

Yammer as Yarra Bend’s new communication,

collaborative and storage technology.

A large proportion of the membership attended the first

of several planned Yammer workshops with our dining

tables at Amora full with Laptops, Tablets and

Smartphones!

The introduction of Yammer is part of Yarra Bend’s

‘modernisation of club operations’ strategy that: ensures

club records are centrally stored, supports committees

in communicating their activities and reduces email by

encouraging ‘conversations’ via the chat function.

Uptake and adoption of Yammer’s features was clearly

successful with members during the workshop having

conversations via the chat function, taking photos and

posting them and overall getting a feel for the user

interface and experience.

With the aim of fully activating Yammer as the club’s main

communication tool by September, a further workshop for

members to familiarise themselves will be held on

Wednesday 26 August @530pm. The Yarra Bend board

will also pilot the storage aspect of Yammer by posting

board reports for all members to view in mid-late August.

Fellow Bulletin Aficionados, a short note from me in

this edition as this week’s bulletin has just too many

interesting articles for you to catch-up on!

As we move closer to kicking-off of our second year

of the Yarra Bend Rotary Rotaract Mentor program

the timing to welcome a number of our Swinburne

Rotaractors at our next meeting is ideal. Led by

Rotaract President Jordan I’m sure all members will

be interested in what they have planned for this year and how we can

help.

Members, friends of Rotary & interested readers of this bulletin,

I look forward to seeing you this Wednesday.

– Justin

Bushfires, buildings, people, prevention and the future

Andrew shared how bushfires are hot at temperatures upwards of 11000 C

however surprisingly the main issue in bushfires is radiation. Andrew showed

photographs of areas after a bushfire where houses randomly burned or

survived. In understanding the randomness, factors included the analysis of

construction materials such as how brick houses generally, but not always,

fared better than timber houses. Tree height and proximity to buildings, roof

structure and materials were also considerations. When these and other factors

are considered independently houses could reasonably survive a fire. However,

when all factors exist contemporaneously chances of survival were almost nil.

Peoples’ survival could be attributed to:

Their own understanding of the situation

Their own values i.e. what is really important and what is not

Specific circumstances of each situation

Social context

Anecdotally the more people at a dwelling the better the chances of survival.

Andrew shared how much research is underway to find to develop policies to

prevent fires and to minimise damage. Computer modelling of the Ash

Wednesday fires in the Otway Ranges was done to show the effect of

controlled burning to slow the rate of subsequent fires. The modelling showed

large sections of intense heat that may not occur after controlled burning.

Research is also being undertaken to develop methods of predicting the

severity of bushfires by assess the dryness of grasslands and forests.

On the Saturday 1st August the National Youth Science Forum selections were held

at International House.

There were six interview panels who interviewed 54 candidates of which 22 were

selected to represent Rotary District 9800.

Yarra Bend Rotary was well represented with Anne Brown Chairing the NYSF

committee, Bob Lambert one of the Rotarian interviewers, Kolya Haisken-DeNew

(our 2014 NYSF recipient) as a student interviewer and Patrick Jacobs continuing

our great relationship with Kew High being sponsored by Yarra Bend with the hope

of being selected to attend Canberra next January.

Once again we are assured our future is in good hands with these very bright,

enthusiastic and engaging young people representing our District at NYSF.

At Yarra Bend Rotary meetings we regularly have a

Member deliver a 5 minute presentation. Over last few

years we have enjoyed a tremendous variety of

presentations, Rotary related, personal experiences, the

comical and not the so comical! Its all about fellowship

and getting to know each other.

JANE STOTT: Members Moment Jane’s Skiing Trip in Japan

Jane started skiing in 1983, it is now her major physical activity. Her current skis are

bamboo.

With a party of 12 fellow skiers, Jane, her son and her brother travelled by bus to ski

fields on the northern island of Japan where the average maximum temperature is

around –100 C. Japan is 85% mountains so there are plenty of ski fields. Jane showed an

impressive number of photographs of snow on mountain, roads, houses and other

buildings and a number that showed her visiting old Japanese friends and former

workmates, some of whom she had not seen since she left Japan in the early 1990’s.

On Australia Day some Japanese friends built a ‘snow bar’ (of the boozy variety)

featuring cans of Fosters and meat pies, I’m sure a good time was had by all.
