Diploma$Overview$B$The$Interna:onal$Baccalaureate$ $Mrs.$DaveyB$Peel$ !The! Interna/onal! Baccalaureate! is! a! rigorous! programme!based!on! the! pacern! of! no! single!country.! It! is!a!deliberate!compromise!between! the!specialisa/on! required! in! some!na/onal!systems!and!the!breadth!preferred! in!others.!The!general!objec/ves!of!the! Theory! of! Knowledge! (TOK)! is! central! to! the! educa/onal! philosophy! of!the! Diploma! Programme.! It! offers! students! and! their! teachers! the!opportunity!to!reflect!cri/cally!on!diverse!ways!of!knowing!and!on!areas!of!knowledge!and!to!consider!the!role!and!nature!of!knowledge!in!their!own!culture,!in!the!cultures!of!others!and!in!the!wider!world.!!In!addi/on,!it!prompts!students!to:!!• be!aware!of!themselves!as!thinkers,!encouraging!them!to!become!

more!acquainted!with!the!complexity!of!knowledge!• recognize! the! need! to! act! responsibly! in! an! increasingly!

equipped!with! the! key! knowledge,! skills! and! behaviours! that! are! needed! for! success! in! the! 21st! century.!

Students!benefit!from!the!more!applied!learning!focus!of!the!BTEC!and!the!modular!structure!of!the!courses.!

There! are!no! terminal! exams! for!BTEC! courses,! the! courses! are!prac/cally! focused! and!enable! students! to!

pursue!individual!study!areas.!!

!There!are!two!main!combina/ons!of!the!AD!Diploma,!shown!lem.!BTEC!courses!are!studied!together!as!major!

or!minor!subjects!in!combina/on!giving!students!the!equivalent!of!3!“A”!levels.!In!addi/on!students!add!AS!

level!qualifica/ons! (dependent!on!demand)! to!enrich! their!experience!and!create!an!acrac/ve!package! for!

!The!Advanced!Diploma!also!provides!students!with!addi/onal!experience!and!skills!gained!through!the!

Psychology is the systematic study of behaviour and mental processes. Psychology has its roots in both the natural and social sciences, leading to a variety of research designs and applications, and providing a unique approach to understanding modern society. !IB psychology examines the interaction of biological, cognitive and sociocultural influences on human behaviour, thereby adopting an integrative approach. !Understanding how psychological knowledge is generated, developed and applied enables students to achieve a greater understanding of themselves and appreciate the diversity of human behaviour. The ethical concerns raised by the methodology and application of psychological research are key considerations in IB psychology. Island!School!Visual!Arts! students! conceive!of,!develop!and!create!a!body!of!prac/cal! and! inves/ga/on!work,!both!visual! and!wricen,!which!represents! their! individual! journey! through!2!years!of!intensive!art!learning!and!prac/ce.!This!body!of!work!leads!to!an!exhibi/on! of! studio! work! and! a! formal! presenta/on! of! ideas,!concepts! and! discoveries! to! the! IB! examiner.! Students! are!

encouraged! to! reflect! their! diverse,! cultural! experiences! and!histories!in!visual!and!academic!inquiry!of,!place,!iden/ty!and!self.!!The!Visual!Arts! syllabus!allows! for!a!wide! range!of! responses!and!working!styles,!par/cularly!in!rela/on!to!current!contemporary!art!prac/ce.! Year$12$Personal$Landscapes!!Student!work!develops!from!inves/ga/ve!workshops,! in!which!the!primary! focus! is! the!object,!and! the!part! the!object!has!played! in!Art! during! the! C20th! and! C21st.! Meaning,! context! and! inten/on!will!be!addressed,!as!well! as! the! role!of!ar/st,!patron,!media!and!audience.! Prac/cal! knowledge! will! be! underpinned! by! study,!analysis! and!discussion!of! relevant!examples! from!historically! and!culturally! varied! sources.! In! the! second! half! of! year! 12! the!emphasis! shims! to! extending! student! awareness! and! examining!contemporary!art!prac/ce!in!more!depth.!Studio!work!begins!with!a!view! to!producing!a!body!of!work! that! reflects! cultural! context,!place!and!personal!iden/ty.!Students!will!begin!to!explore!issues!of!concept! as! they! look!at! the!manipula/on!of! the! found!object.!All!students!will!complete!a!life9drawing!course,!in!the!final!part!of!the!year.!!Year$13:$The$Major$Theme$Y13!will! be! spent! on! individual! independent! studio! prac/ce.!
