WYNBERG GIRLS'

HIGH SCHOOL

2019 APPLICATIONS

& ADMISSIONS

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Founded as the Ladies’ Seminary in September 1884, the school has offered 133 years of excellent service to the community. Situated in the Southern Suburbs below Table Mountain, the school caters for pupils from Grades eight to twelve and offers termly and weekly boarding facilities.

Wynberg Girls’ High School has a proud history of preparing young women for the challenges of the society and work environment of their time. The staff and Board of Governors continu-ally evaluate structures, facilities and practice to ensure that we remain on the cutting edge of education.

We currently have 55 full-time educators and several part-time educators for the 938 learners. The maximum number of learners in a class is 30, although several subject option groups in the senior phase are considerably smaller. We have support staff, hostel staff and admin staff, including two clinical social workers.

We are proud and excited to be part of the Wynberg Campus of Schools with interaction and co-operation with our brother school and the two Wynberg junior schools. This allows us to have the best of both worlds, single-sex education and many combined extra-mural activities in music, drama, clubs, societies and sport.

Thank you for the interest you have shown in Wynberg Girls’ High School. Please read this information pamphlet, visit the school website or our Facebook page or telephone us to find out everything you need to know about our wonderful school.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT: CREATIVE ARTSLearners may take Music as a subject from Grade 8 to Grade 12. In Grade 8 and 9 we offer two music streams – one for those currently studying an instrument and one for beginners (Essential Element Class).

Prospective Music Students currently studying an instrument:We offer tuition in: Piano, Recorder, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Violin, Viola, Brass Instru-ments (Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium and French Horn), Voice (Singing), Guitar, Drums (at Beau Soleil Music School). Any musical instrument not listed may, on request of the learner, be taken at school. However, this will depend on the number of interested learners and the availability of the part-time music teachers. It is advisable that learners own their own instrument in which they receive tuition and will be examined. Girls who take the piano as their instrument must have access to a piano after hours. Various brass instruments, flutes, clarinets and saxophones are available for hiring (this is limited and subject to avail-ability). Learners are required to pay a fee for tuition in second or additional instruments and for the hiring of instruments.

The Music Course involves a practical and a written module. Learners who receive tuition at Beau Soleil Music School may continue to take the practical component there and the theoretical work at WGHS. This also applies to learners who have private lessons on an instrument not offered by the school.

Please Note: Prospective music students who are currently studying an instrument are required to play an audition and/or do a musicality test. They will be required to play two pieces and do a sight reading exercise for their audition.

PROSPECTIVE MUSIC STUDENTS WHO ARE BEGINNERS:These learners have the option of participating in either group voice or group wind instru-ment lessons. Learners who wish to enter the wind “Essential Element” group (saxophone, flute, clarinet, trombone and trumpet) will need to hire an instrument from the school and must meet Ms Pearce for an instrument suitability test. Learners who wish to enter the voice group must meet Mrs van Bergen for an audition.

NB: ALL those considering taking music must fill in an application form and book an audi-tion time if required. Forms available after final acceptances.

We hope that by always using the Class Tutor as the first port of call, parents will build a relationship with their daughter’s Class Tutor, as she/he will remain the learner’s Class Tutor for the duration of her time at Wynberg. Tutor groups lose their matrics at the end of each year, and welcome some new Grade 8’s at the beginning of each new year.

As we try to educate our learners in such a way that they are prepared for the real world when seeking employment, the learner leadership positions are appointed after a process of letters of application, CV’s, speeches and interviews. The Grade 12 School Council works together with the Representative Council of Learners (3 learners from each grade who are democratically elected). The School Council consists of a Head of School, the 3 Grade 12 RCL members, a Head of each of the 4 pillars of the school, 8 Heads of House and a Communications Head. Heads of clubs, societies and sports will report to the Head of the appropriate pillar. A dynamic and rigorous learner leadership programme takes place during a learner’s Grade 11 year.

We have seen tremendous benefits through this system as it recognises the individuality of each Wynberg learner while encouraging her to be part of the wide Wynberg family here at Girls’ High and across the Wynberg Campus of Schools.

PASTORAL CARE AND LEADERSHIPWynberg Girls’ High School has a proactive and dynamic approach to leadership, the house system and class administration. We have evolved a system which gives more responsi-bility to the learners and encourages greater interaction between educator and learner over an extended period. Learners in a large school often feel that they are not recognised as individuals. This different approach at Wynberg seeks to make every learner connect with other girls, not only with those in her grade, but also with the seniors of the school.

Most schools divide learners into grades under a Grade Head who is responsible for ap-proximately 180-200 learners. The Wynberg Girls’ High School system divides the girls into eight houses, each under a senior teacher (House Co-ordinator) who is in charge of approximately 120 learners. Girls are allocated to tutor groups, four tutor groups per house, headed by Class Tutors.

Class Tutors are supported in their task of nurturing the girls in their tutor group by a very well qualified Life Skills Department. Two Social Workers offer therapy to individual or groups of learners and therapy includes parent or family sessions if and when necessary. Staff qualified in counselling, who also teach Life Orientation as a subject, are available to the girls for discussions and help on various issues – particularly academic matters and career options. Learners may approach the counselling staff directly or may be referred by their Class Tutor, House Co-ordinator, member of the management team or a parent.

Learner leadership is an integral part of our system. Therefore, instead of each tutor group having only girls of one age-group and grade, each tutor group consists of on average five to six girls from each grade, led by a Matric Leader who is responsible for some of the administrative work, providing care and help for the younger members of the group and encouraging enthusiastic participation in school life. All senior learners are expected to be role models for the juniors and to provide the backbone of pride in the school and encour-age school spirit.

House points are gained in a number of ways: at all interhouse events, for individual partic-ipation, achievement and support at extra-mural activities, 100% attendance at school, and progress and achievement in areas falling under the four school pillars (Academic, Culture, Service and Sport).

Learners are divided into teaching groups for their normal day-to-day subjects, but gather in the tutor groups as much as possible. Parents who wish to make contact with the school to discuss academic or other problems are encouraged to work through the Class Tutor, who will refer issues to the House Coordinator, counselling department or senior management as required.

ACADEMIC MATTERSEvery school has an academic focus and at Wynberg Girls’ High School we laim to recog-nise the different levels of academic achievement, which is why we believe that we are a centre of excellence.

The curriculum followed is laid down by the Department of Education, both in the GET and FET phases. We do, however, afford learners the opportunity for both enrichment and academic support. In order to enrich and extend our learners, we offer an AS levels course in English and History which runs concurrently with the Grade 11 syllabus.

The school has vibrant Mathematics and Physical Sciences departments and girls have the opportunity to reach their potential in these important gateway subjects. We make use of the latest technology, including online material, and there is an emphasis on placing the important concepts in real-life contexts.

We encourage our girls to enter Olympiads as well as national and international competi-tions, which allows us to benchmark our results. A number of our past pupils have won scholarships to universities through these competitions.

Academic support is offered for those girls who have missed work, or are struggling with a particular section of the work. Top students from Grades 11 and 12 offer their assistance to these girls in a relaxed environment.

Clinics in many of the subjects are offered on a weekly basis and are run by the educators. These are for consolidation of all the work covered during the week. No new work is taught and the learners may ask any questions pertaining to their work in that particular subject. We also have supervised study on three afternoons a week for those who would like to do their homework in a controlled environment, or write tests that they have missed.

The academic pillar gives each learner the opportunity to involve herself in many different types of activities and allows stimulation and fulfilment in a variety of ways. We have a standardised test cycle given to the learners at the beginning of each term so that they can plan their studying accordingly.

All classrooms have computers for teaching, data projectors and audio-visual equipment, and many classrooms have interactive whiteboards. We also have three well-maintained computer labs, a technology lab, consumer studies lab and demonstration room, and a well-equipped music laboratory. Interhouse academic challenges are held—for example, Mathematics Olympiads, Spelling Bees, The Weakest Link and similar competitions.
