Dear Parents

This last month has been devoted largely to marketing our school to prospective learners for 2015. It has made me reflect, again, on how easy it is to “sell” our school. JAZZ BAND SLAMS

AT THE WATERFRONT!

On Friday 21 February, our Jazz Band competed in the Interschools Band Slam Competition hosted at the V & A Waterfront. Under the leadership of Ms Dayna Pearce, the band put together an entirely new half hour set in the space of 4 weeks, almost unheard of at school level. The members include: Michelle Langeveld, Dominique Jacobs, Carryn Joseph, Beth Petersen, Layla Omar, Ashleigh Dreyer, Ra’eesah Dalvie, Jamie-Lee Benjamin, Monique Harrison, Anais Van Vuuren, Isabelle Hayes, Elsa Nel, Hong Ju Nam, Michaela Jacobs, Carla Stokes, Anastasia Solomons, Nadine Eddy, Saskia De Villiers, Emma Martin and Caitlin Johnson. The 4th South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) was held in Cape Town recently. It is the only event of its kind in Africa and attracts top dancers from around the World. The competition has been hailed by dance enthusiasts as one of the most exciting events on the SA dance calendar, showcasing breathtaking athletic abilities and technical prowess. This year, a Scholar group was included which enabled Dance studies students, Zhenya Pietersen and Mikayla Isaacs, to enter and be selected to take part. The 48 participants were from Switzerland, Cuba, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, China and includes the biggest number of South African entrants to date. The Sunday Gala show at Artscape showcased the SAIBC 2014 winners and top dancers from the National Ballet School of Cuba, and the Young Korean Ballet Stars from South Korea. WGHS Dance teacher, Carol Shapiro-Dodds, was lucky enough to attend several sessions and had this to say: “I want to go to China to pick up tips on how they train such outstanding dancers!” The highlight for her was the exceptionally high standard of performance, and the technical strength and the sincerity and professionalism with which all of the dancers performed. She has no doubt that the experience and inspiration gained by Zhenya and Mikayla is immeasurable!

GRADE 12 EVENING

On 19 February, the Grade 12s and their parents attended an evening designed to prepare them fully for their final year at school. Mr Saayman, Grade 12 Head, welcomed everyone to the information evening. Deidre Schultz and Jehan Chikte from the Wynberg Old Girls Union reminded them that even though they would finish school this year, they would never truly leave the Wynberg Family. Guest speaker, Jamie Bassett, Head of School in 2008 and now a Grade 7 teacher at Wynberg Girls' Junior School, spoke about time management. Finally there was a question and answer session where Mrs McEwen and Mrs Harding dealt with concerns ranging from the Matric Dance, to handling stress and the homework load. Overall the evening left matrics feeling inspired for the year ahead.

DA VINCI EXHIBITION

On Tuesday, 4 February, 12 WGHS teachers, representing the Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy and Physical Science departments, visited the “Da Vinci – The Genius” exhibition at the V & A Waterfront. The exhibition is touring the world and we were privileged to be able to visit it in Cape Town. While many people think of Leonardo Da Vinci as an artist, he was also an inventor, a scientist, an architect, and an engineer and the exhibition covered these areas of his work. While all of us were impressed by the life-size HD recreation of the Last Supper and the extensive section focusing on the secrets of the Mona Lisa, each of us found

WORLD KNOWLEDGE CHALLENGE

On 18 February, an excited bunch of Grade 7s and their parents filed into the Aileen Currie Hall to get a taste of life at our beautiful school. Guests entering the hall were entertained by the Jazz Band. After this, the drama girls performed, followed by the choir, a dance choreographed by Jenna Roll, the Vocal Ensemble and Triplet - a band made up of three Wynberg girls. Mrs Harding then addressed parents about the importance of finding the right school, explaining what Wynberg in particular has to offer. Then, while the Marimba Society played in the Wellington Quad, everyone split into groups to go on tours around the school led by the School Council, Matric Leaders and members of the RCL.

(Coach),

The Senior Debating team visited Springfield Convent on Monday 24 February to debate the motion 'This House Would open NSFAS funding to private tertiary institutes'. The two teams met last at the 2011 Rotary Debating League finals where Springfield won the day, so it was a very proud moment for the team when this time they came out on top against their rival school. Both sides debated very well and were given excellent feedback from the adjudicators.

Inviting new MSA members to a braai at the pool is an annual tradition and this year was no different. We gathered under the pergola in the pool area, everyone squishing together for protection from the sun. After a few ice-breakers where we learned things about each other, the fires were perfect and girls gathered around to braai. The scorching sun and hot fire made swimming very pleasant! Girls plunged in - Ms Moerat included! All in all, the afternoon was a great success. It was a relaxed, warm start to the busy year planned for the WGHS

Valentine's Day at Wynberg has always been quite a big deal. This year, it was the School Council's first chance to host an Assembly and they took full advantage of it by using it as an opportunity to make complete and utter fools of themselves by holding the first ever #wynbergpride Music Awards. Cupido Valentino (Georgia Bailey - Head of School) hosted the event.

VALENTINE’S DAY

Yeukai Chamba (RCL Head) & Georgia Bailey (Head of School) with the coveted roses.

The four categories were: Break Up Songs, Hit Singles, Cupidly Confused and Lovestruck. The School Council had split into 4 groups, each of which created 4 videos for each category. These resulted in some pretty hilarious footage. The winning artists for each category were: Break Up Songs - Someone Like You - played by Leandre Kleynhans. Hit Singles - Ridin' Solo played by Yeukai Chamba. Cupidly Confused - How To Love played by Lisa Abrahams. Lovestruck - Baby played by Robyn Schippers. There were then some special awards. For the 'Best Song Ever' Award, the One Directionettes won for 'What Makes You Beautiful'. The 'Best Female Group' went to the Spice Girls for 'Wannabe'. The last category was a spoof of the song 'Dumb Ways To Die' written by Head of Culture Rachel Suttle, called 'Dumb Ways To Dump'.After all this excitement, the girls were sent off to collect their roses sent by other schools. A very enjoyable Valentine's Day was had by all.

MAKING A FILM DOCUMENTARY

On 3 February, the Grade 11s attended a lecture by Lynne Childs on the making of documentaries. Mrs Childs was assisted by her husband and by Daniel Manners (Mrs Manners’ son) and together, they entertained us and taught the Grade 11s a great deal about making documentaries - including completing sufficient research, always respecting one's subjects, and the fact that all documentaries should have a story. It was, indeed, a privilege to have someone of Mrs Childs' calibre giving up her valuable time to address the Grade 11s this year.

CAREER EVENING

One of the most stressful decisions for a school student to make is what they want to do after school. There are the lucky few who know right from the start which path is the right one for them, but then there are those who remain

uncertain up until the very last minute, and beyond! On 24 February, WBHS hosted a Careers Evening to market some of the many available opportunities. The WBHS hall was filled with loud chatter and excited conversation over career choices. “What do I want to study? Where? For how long do? Do I even want to study?

And if not, what do I want to do?”. For younger grades, it was about looking at what they should be aiming at, but for Matrics it was more serious. The deadlines for applications are looming and informed decisions need to be made. This very worthwhile evening helped many students to make them.

The Valentine’s Dinner is a regular hostel event, planned by the Grade 11s. Mouth-watering food and pumping music: the girls danced their socks off! Later the Grade 11s surprised everyone

with lanterns and sparklers. The evening ended with the movie, “I Hate Valentine’s Day”! Not the case in Waterloo House!

PCs TO ST PAULS’

PRIMARY SCHOOL

Wynberg donated several old computers to St Pauls’ Primary School in the Bo-Kaap. They were delight-ed to receive them.

CAPSTONE CAMP

Capstone campers spent at Rocklands campsite in Simon’s Town to celebrate the one who made the ultimate gesture of love: Jesus Christ. The theme for the camp was ”In the Wild”, the purpose being to encourage students to celebrate God freeing them from the cages of the world. There was much fun to be had over the weekend, including diving for the ‘key to freedom’, memory verses and wild warcry competitions. The worship sessions led by the band featuring musicians from churches all over Cape Town were the highlights. Invariably this led to dancing to ‘the monkey’, an excessively athletic and fun dance routine. Darren, the guest speaker, ran sessions on the importance of recognizing the freedoms we have been given, and we were given practical spiritual advice to apply to everyday situations. Glenn and Vicky Cook from The People’s Church also joined in on the wild action and facilitated

INTERACT NEWS

Interacters had an early start to their Saturday morning as they gathered at Pagasvlei Road, Constantia to serve at one of the water tables for a local running club’s 8km run.

Interacters iced and decorated delicious pink and red cupcakes during the meeting on Monday 10 February, ready to be sold during break on Tuesday. This was partly to spread the Valentine's Day excitement throughout the school and partly to raise money for service-orientated projects.

On 22 February, eager members of the Interact society joined Wynberg Rotaract and various schools from the Wynberg District at Constantia Primary School to give under-privileged children a day fun. Children had their face painted, bobbed for apples, won prizes or expressed their creative side. WGHS Interacters held an 'Art Jam' stall where kids splash painted or created masterpieces. They also threw soapy sponges at a 'sunflower face' to win sweets. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Offering water and coke, Interacters cheered the runners on with words of encouragement and some of Wynberg’s spirit-building songs. The runners loved it!

3 February Bellville Stadium:Wynberg was competing in the C section, and not having WBHS to combine with, could have put us at a bit of a disadvantage. However, from the word go, our athletes dominated on the track. In the 100m: U14s Sara Van Zyl and Taylor Fisher came 1st and 2nd, and U15s Brooke Jacobs and Carrie Schaller also came 1st and 2nd. U17 hurdlers, Viktoria Ehm and Catherine Nothling came 1st and 3rd and U19 Susanna Purisiol came 3rd. Our athletes were determined to do well, and captain, Berzilee Pipes, lead by example. Our U14s produced excellent results, winning 7 Gold medals and 5 Silver. The U14 athlete of the day was Lara Johnson, with her outstanding results, winning the 100m in 13.38sec and winning the 200m in 26.10sec. Our under 15s had a proud total of 7 Gold Medals and 7 Silver. The U15 athlete of the day was Jessica Stephens who won the 100m, the high jump and the long jump. The U17s did even better with 9 Gold Medals, 6 Silver medals and 1 bronze. There were two U17 athletes for the day: Lauren Jonathan won the 1500m and the 3000m, and was 1st in the triple jump; Viktoria Ehm won the 100m hurdles, the 400m hurdles, and was 1st in the long jump. The U19s also did well winning 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 bronze medals. Berzilee Pipes was U19 athlete of the day because she won the 100m and 200m and led the U19 relay team to victory. When the scores were added, WGHS had made history by winning the meeting - 40 points more than the second placed school. This is a first for Wynberg - WELL DONE, girls!

ATHLETICS INDOOR HOCKEY

Wynberg 2nds vs Reddam 1sts: Wynberg won 2-1This game was an evenly contested affair. Reddam scored first from deflection. Chelsea Manoek was on target with a well-timed flick to even the scores. This was followed by a goal from Berzilee Pipes. The team held on against relentless attacks to win their first game of the season! Wynberg 2nds vs Herschel 2nds: Wynberg lost 0-7A disappointing result from a team that has more potential than this result reflects.Wynberg 2nd vs St Cyprians 2nd: Wynberg won 2-1An exciting game in which the Wynberg players connected great passes and applied pressure throughout the game. Captain, Cara Geere, provided excellent ball to the strikers on attack and kept steady at the back on the defensive. Berzilee Pipes and Amina Williams worked hard from the front and made some dangerous leads. Logan Patel was also strong on the counter-attack while Robyn Burrows and Hannah Hellenberg worked tirelessly to maintain our lead. Special mention to our goalkeeper, Valeschka Harkhu, who had a storming game to help the team ensure victory. Player of the match was Cara Geere.

Players of the game were Steph Lopes-Stuart and Sasha Sivertsen.Wynberg 1sts vs Rustenburg 1sts: Wynberg lost 3-2This was always going to be a hotly-contested game due to the competititve nature of the two teams. Through patient build-up, Rustenburg put themselves in the lead. Then Jamie Southgate counter-attacked and drew the goalkeeper to set Steph Lopes-Stuart up to score the equaliser. The euphoria of the equaliser was short-lived, though, as Rustenburg scored the winning goal in the dying minutes of the game.Wynberg 1st vs St Cyprians 1st: Wynberg lost 4-5This was a very exciting game with the lead changing several times. Erin Prince and Jamie Southgate linked up to score the opening goal and captain, Nicole Alexander, put the finishing touches to a sublime pass from Steph Lopes-Stuart. Wynberg forced a number of short corners, but just could not breach the St Cyprians’ defence.

Wynberg 3rds vs Fish Hoek 1sts: Wynberg lost 1-5 Rachel Lassen showed lots of bravery as she made good clearances.

Wynberg 3rds vs Rustenburg 2nds: Wynberg lost 1-5Once again the 3rds were up against stronger competition but completed well for the ball. SWIMMING

The WGHS swimming team participated in a gala hosted by WBHS. The bad weather did not discourage this team of eager swimmers. The U14s swam extremely well once again with Lara Johnson placing 3rd in the butterfly and 4th in the breaststroke. These excellent results coupled with her hard work ethic and determination earns her the Swimmer of the Week award. Special mention is made of the U16 girls who filled the spaces left by the touring waterpolo swimmers. A special mention is also made of Sarah Richter who is always positive: her constant determination, drive and passion is uplifting for the rest of the squad.

Wynberg 1sts vs Westerford: Wynberg won 6-0!On 21 February Wynberg entered the first of the provincial play off matches, against Westerford. This consequence of this wonderful win is that Wynberg now enters the finals for the 2nd league of Southern Girls’ tennis. Congratulations to the 1st team for keeping their focus and emerging victorious on such an important match day!

U16A: Wynberg won 15-0. A convincing win for the U16A team! Nearly every team member scored a goal and Demi Steenkamp had an incredible defensive game, preventing many a goal attempt from Westerford. The team spirit amongst the U16As was apparent throughout the match - the players were always aware of who was in a better position to score, rather than always

going for personal glory.

U16B: Wynberg won 7-1. U14A: Wynberg lost 1-16U14B: Wynberg won 4-1

U14 PITCAIRN WATERPOLO TOURNAMENT

This tournament is hosted by Reddam, Constantia. The U14 Waterpolo team, excited to be playing in their first high school tournament, took on the Reddam U14B team in their first match. They were very proud of their 19-0 victory but full of trepidation for their next fixture against the strong Reddam A team. Wynberg put up a strong fight but lost 2-13. They also lost to Pearson 2-6, but rectified their errors against Bloemhof, beating them 14-2. A long day at the pool, got the better of the Wynberg team and they went down 2-5 to a strong Kingswood team but bounced back the next morning and pipped Rustenburg 3-2 in a thriller of a game. This meant they finished 4th in their pool, an excellent and hard-fought result, earning them a match against pool B winners, Springfield. They lost 1-8 and also lost their other play-offs against Kingswood and Pearson, finishing in 8th spot. Thanks to the coaches, Jamie Day and Ashlyn Quenet-Meintjes, for their enthusiasm and commitment, and to Dr Woods, Ms Solms and Ms Hudson-Windsor for their support.

The U16A waterpolo team participated in the Oakhill Waterfront Chukka Waterpolo Festival in Knysna. This waterpolo festival is unique

as it was played in the sea and within the sheltered surrounds of the Knysna harbour. This is actually an U19 festival so our girls did

extremely well to return having won 5 out of their 7 matches. We are really proud of their performance and results. The team spirit was

always high, with the girls cheering for other participating schools and doing their special warm-up dance in the Waterfront Square.

Well done to coach, Alan Footman, and to Erin Lamoral, voted most valuable player.
