CLIFFORD KENNETH FARNSWORTH, SR.

Was there ever any more interesting, any more fun human being to be around thanKen Farnsworth? I don't think so!

Ken Farnsworth was born on the 4th of July in 1920, in Rhode Island. His familymoved soon to Michigan, and it was there that Ken got his education. He attended theHenry Ford Trade School near Detroit, and actually met THE Henry Ford! Whileworking those early years in Michigan, he met a young woman named Ethel Hock. Theywere married on June 18, 1942, and they celebrated 69 years of love and marriage.

Born to them would be eight children: Ken, Jr., Kathleen, Holly, Frank, Karen,David, Mark, and Kate. Their large family then expanded to include 15 belovedgrandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

For a good share of his working life, Ken was involved in the food business. He toldstories of some early years in Detroit selling Candy and Tobacco, and always being awareof the Mafia! Later for many years he was a food broker for several different major UScompanies. In 1957, his work took him and his family to Los Angeles, from where hetraveled all over the West. It didn't take him long to discover that Boise, Idaho, was in hisopinion, the best place of all to raise a family. From 1960on, Boise became home.

Ken founded Ken-Son Food Brokerage, and then just a few years later broughtRhodes Bread to Idaho. As you all know, Rhodes grew to become one of the best-knownand successful frozen bread products companies in America.

Ken and Ethel and family became part of Wright Church in 1967, and have beenfaithful, generous participants in our church all these years since. Together or separately, they have been part of practically every group or project involving our congregation. Theyalso have been instrumental in helping start a UCC Church in Yuma, Arizona, where theywintered for many years. They were also part of a team of UCC members who went on apeace mission to Russia years ago. Ken and Ethel also have left a great legacy as peopleconcerned about the environment, long before it became fashionable. Ken also was anationally-recognized ambassador for the Smile Train, the wonderful organizationsupporting doctors who go all over the world to perform surgery on poor children bornwith cleft palate or other disfiguring conditions.

We thank God for this joyful, passionate, dedicated life of 91 years!

IN LOVING MEMORY

Since the last issue of the Wright Ups was produced, we have said goodbye to two ofour most beloved members - Jack Barrett and Ken Farnsworth. We honor them today:

JOHN W. "JACK" BARRETT

For almost 50 years, Jack Barrett and his beloved wife Marilyn (who passed awayjust three years ago) were wonderful, loving members and supporters of Wright Church-and their legacy of family and spirit lives on!

John W. Barrett was born in North Dakota in 1931. He grew up there, graduatingfrom Minot High School, and began to attend Minot State College when the Korean Warbroke out. He joined the Air Force and was eventually stationed at Dow AFB in Bangor,Maine. It was there that he met and fell in love with Marilyn Light. They were married inJune of 1952.

By that time, Jack was completing his degree at the University of Idaho. He went onto also graduate from the U of I Law School, and the family moved to Boise in 1959 wherehe began a truly remarkable Law Practice. Over the years, Jack and Marilyn had fourchildren: Kim, Charlie, Laura, and Jonna-and through them they were given 10grandchildren.

As you know, Jack was a founding member and partner in the prominent Boise LawFirm of Moffatt, Thomas, Barrett, Rock, & Fields. Jack became known over many yearsas Idaho's most respected and honored Workers Compensation Attorney. He was honoredby his profession with many, many awards and recognitions. Perhaps, one of the greatesthighlights of his career, that demonstrated both is professional skill and his socialconscience, was his indispensable work in the 1996 passage of the Farm Workers Bill, which at last brought farm workers under Idaho's Workers Comp provisions andprotection.

As you would expect, Jack took part in many leadership roles in our Church. Heserved three years as Board Chairman; he and Marilyn were Deacons; they were membersand/or chairs of several other committees; and in those occasional times of need, he wouldoffer wise and helpful legal guidance.

We thank God for this good and faithful life of 79 years! And we all extend our loveto his family.

Stewardship Message from Carl Van Slyke

For All the World

"For God so loved the world. .. " John 3:16

Christians are, by their very nature, citizens of the world. From the beginning ofthe church, as Paul invited the churches he formed to contribute to help the churchin Jerusalem, we have shared resources with each other as any have need.Through our Neighbors in Need offerings, often received in early October, weshare with kin in the U.S. Through One Great Hour of Sharing and our regulargiving to Our Church's Wider Mission we support missionaries and partnerchurches and relief organizations around the world. Though American churchesare young by the standards of the Middle East, Africa and Europe, we also arewealthy in comparison to many of those churches. As we plan our own pledgedrives and construct our church budgets this year, let us remind each other thatGod not only loves us but all the world.

Rochelle A. Stackhouse is the Senior Minister of The Church of the Redeemer, United Church ofChrist, New Haven Connecticut.

Budget updateIt has been several months since I let you know how close the income iscoming to meeting the expenses in the General Fund budget that wasapproved in January 2011. We made several major cuts in the budgetbased on projected income with a goal of a balanced budget. The budgetthat was approved had a negative balance of $11,827. As of July 31,2011 general fund income totaled $74,938 and expenses totaled $73,845with a positive balance of $1093. Income actually has exceededprojections by a bit and expenses are right on target.

I would like to thank each of you for your faithful giving to the GeneralFund during the first half of the year and ask that you consider and overand above gift to help us meet the expenses that were approved in thebudget. I would also like to thank the congregation for its generoussupport of outreach projects that are not included in the General FundBudget. These include Building Fund, Pilgrim Cove Camp andConference Center, Christmas in August, The Giving Tree, CommunitySuppers, Food Pantry, One Great Hour of Sharing, Christmas Fund, miscellaneous office and cleaning supplies. We are truly a caring, generous, and giving congregation.

BUT-He isn't giving up hope-He knows there are some of you outthere who might be thinking, "Maybe I could contribute my talents by singingin the choir". If that "sounds" like you, please come join us on Wednesdayevenings, beginning September 7, and be part of this important musicalexpression of our faith! Thanks!

WELCOME BACK TO THE CHOIR!

FIRST REHEARSAL, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 - 7:00PM-: FIRST ANTHEM IN CHURCH - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

Music is-as it always has been-a wonderful, central piece of ourweekly Worship Services! And, we want to have a special choir to makejoyful noises to the Lord and to help lead the congregation in singing the songsof our faith.

Choir Director Ron Apperson has put out a "wish list". He says if hecould "snap his fingers" and magically produce more singers for the choir, hewould ask for two more sopranos, two more tenors, and two more basses. (Weseem to have already been blessed with an abundance of altos!) He's askedand prayed, but hasn't had those people appear yet ...

Between Memory and Hope

John 14:25-31

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the worldgives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. 11

- John 14:27

Just about everyone can remember where they were the morning ofSeptember 11, 2001 and the days that followed. As New York ConferenceMinister, I was scheduled to preach in New York City the following

Sunday. When I arrived, the congregation had gathered as usual, and notsurprisingly, most of the folks were still in a state of shock.

There was an abiding atmosphere of sadness and grieving, yet anotheremotion that I had not anticipated was the presence of deep gratitude. It wasbeginning to dawn on many of us that as devastating and shocking as theattacks were, there was reason to be thankful that the tragedy could have beeneven greater. This awareness was accompanied by the stories of individualswho worked near the World Trade Center, but for various reasons were notthere that fateful morning. Many more were grateful that, for the moment, the danger had passed. Even in the midst of mourning, our thanksgiving toGod was fervent and deeper than usual.

The pain and suffering that we as Americans associate with terrorism beganthat day and has continued ever since. For that reason the date is etched in ournation's collective consciousness. However, it is important to note that forothers around the world, that day is the day we experienced the degree of painother nations and peoples have experienced far longer. September 11th was aday the tragedies of the world came to our shores ....

Our gathering as a UCC church in Queens, New York, on that first Sundayafter September 11th, 2001 was a moment in time filled with regret and grief. It was also tinged with hope emanating from thanksgiving to our living, loving and merciful God, to whom we turn as we contemplate beginning anewour work toward God's just and peaceful realm "on earth as it is in heaven."
