Dodge, Iowa, have pulled the proverbial hat- trick by three-peating in the NJCAA National Wrestling Championships held at Roch- ester Community and Technical College in Minnesota. At the start of the day on Saturday, Iowa Central held a slim four point lead over Labette College (KS), with both teams having seven wrestlers still alive as did second rated Meramec. Iowa Central would get a little more breathing room as they sent three wrestlers into the finals. Meramec and North Iowa also matched IC’s three finalists, Labette had one finalist, and there still was a battle for second, third, and fourth place. In the first bout of the night at 125-pounds the top two seeded wresters would match up for the second time this season. Northwest Wyoming’s Jeremy Ensley (Homedale, ID) 31-5 overall and undefeated in the JUCO ranks would face Iowa Central’s Terrance Young (Minneapolis, MN) who was 33-3 over all and 18-1 in NJCAA action. Young’s only loss came at the hand of Ensley at the Apadaca Duals in Wyoming, 3-2. Terrance Young the first of three Triton finalists would start Iowa Central out on the right foot with a 3-1 decision over Jeremy Ensley of Northwest Wyoming, avenging his only JUCO loss on the year. The Triton’s next foe would be Aaron Sanzee from Meramec at 141, and the Magic were trying to move up from third to second place in the team standings. Labette had the runner-up slot headed into the finals with a lone finalist, and Meramec had three finalists as did NIACC, who was also looking to improve in their national finish. For Senzee (Kearney, MO), it would not come easy in the title match. His opponent, David Greenwald of Iowa Central, established a 5-0 lead in the first period, nearly pinning Senzee. In January at the National Duals, Greenwald pinned Senzee in just 22 seconds. However, the Meramec grappler battled back, scoring seven unanswered points and held on for a 7-6 championship victory. Iowa Central’s last finalist, second-ranked freshman Brad Lower (Burlington, IA) was undefeated in junior college action entering the finals with an 18-0 record. Lower’s oppo- nent in the 165-pound final was fourth- ranked Mike Morgan (Berryhill, OK) of Labette, who was 10-2 in NJCAA matches with one loss coming from Lower at the Cliff Keen national duals, 4-0. The Card’s Mikey Morgan would even his win-loss record with Lower at 1-1, as he edged IC’s Brad Lower 7- 6 for the title and a little payback. With Lower’s loss, the Tritons would go 1 for 3 in the finals, but still had the team to take the D- I title. At the start of the day on Saturday, IowaCentral held a slim four point lead overLabette College (KS), with both teams havingseven wrestlers still alive as did second ratedMeramec. Iowa Central would get a littlemore breathing room as they sent threewrestlers into the finals. Meramec and NorthIowa also matched IC’s three finalists, Labettehad one finalist, and there still was a battle forsecond, third, and fourth place.

In the first bout of the night at 125-poundsthe top two seeded wresters would match upfor the second time this season. NorthwestWyoming’s Jeremy Ensley (Homedale, ID)31-5 overall and undefeated in the JUCO

Clements (West Salem, WI) from hostRochester, 22-7. Winn a high school nationalchampion had three tech-falls and a pin dur-ing the tournament and was named the meets“out-standing” wrestler. Jamelle Jones not tobe out done by his fellow Meramec wrestlers,Winn and Sanzee, needed over-time to downChad Friend of Muskegon, 6-4 OT. Meramecwent three-for-three in the finals and movedpast Labette for second place, and Coach RonMirikitani was named “Coach-of the Year” forthe scholarship division as the Magic enjoyed

their best team finishes in school history. The Magic’s champions earn All-American

status along with teammates Bobby Conn at157 (Marquette), Miles Bolin at 125 (Ft.Zumwalt W.), Donald Woods (McCluer N.) at165, and Dirk Hurrin (St. Agnes, VA) at 174.Hurrin won a fifth place medal, while Connand Bolin placed sixth, and Woods came inseventh. The second place team finish, threeindividual champions, and seven All-Americans are all school records for one sea-son.

Another team looking to move up in thefinal team score was NIACC who matchedMeramec’s three champions as Albert White(Harvey, Il) improved his undefeated recordin JC’s to 20-0 at 149 as he downed TJHepburn Ledyard, CT) of Colby, 3-2. Thiswas White’s third win over Hepburn for theyear, but with both wrestlers being freshmanand baring any transferring, these two topwrestlers could meet again! Another set offreshman would meet in the finals at 157-pounds; Marshall Giovanni of Highlinewould bring a perfect 25-0 JC record to thefinals where he would meet NIACC’sDavaughn Perkins (Omaha, NE) who was 16-1 in JUCO matches. Perkins would edgeMarshall Giovanni of Highline, 9-8, for thesecond individual title for NIACC. Thirdranked Jason Green (Pawnee, OK) of Neoshowould face NIACC’s Glenn Rhees for the 174-pound title. Both sophomores, Rhees woulddecision Green, 7-3 for the 174# title, and gavehead coach Rich Fregola and the newly rein-stated North Iowa team 109 points, a fourthplace finish, and three national champions.

In the non-scholarship division, NassauC.C. had an insurmountable lead headinginto the finals and would go two-for-two inadding to their point total finishing up with88.5 points. In a bout of two undefeated JCwrestlers at 133-pounds, Chris Notte ofNassau (Riverton, NJ, 18-0) downed NickMamalis (Green River, WY, 12-0) WesternWyoming, 6-2. With a 20-1 JUCC record andranked second, John Bates (Oregon City, OR)a two-time region champion and 3rd placefinisher in the 2007 JC tournament would facea 5-3 JC freshman in Nassau’s BrandonWilliamson (Riverside, CT) at 285. Recordsaside, Williamson beat John Bates, 7-4. Withtwo national champions and the non-scholar-ship team title in hand; Coach Paul Schmidtof Nassau was named the “coach of the year”for the non-scholarship schools for his teams’effort. Harper College (Ill) finished in second,and host Rochester finished in third place forthe non-scholarship teams.

Tritons beat Meramec by 20.5 points for thescholarship title. Iowa Central finished with138 points, while Meramec (117.5) was sec-ond. Labette (111) placed third. The Tritonscame away with one champion and two run-ners-up on the final day, as seven of their 10qualifying individuals reached the podiumand All-American status. “When we won itthe first time, you kind of start to expect it thesecond time,’’ said ICCC coach Luke Moffitt.“To win it three times in a row, though, we’renow establishing ourselves as the nation’smost dominant junior college program. Whenpeople think junior college wrestling, wewant them to think Iowa Central. We set thebar high, and the kids come down and per-form at a higher standard to reach theirgoals.’’

Harry McGinnis of Triton was named theNJCAA “Man-of-the-Year,” the Ernest B.Gould Outstanding Wrestler Award went toDeron Winn of Meramec, Randy Moore ofGloucester received the Joseph E.Rockenback Sportsmanship Award, DonteButler of Neosho had four falls in 5:49 to earn

the Bruce Traphagen Fall Award, LabetteCollege was named the NJCAA AcademicWrestling Team. Five people were inductedinto the NJCAA Wrestling Hall of Fame onSaturday, prior to the finals. Those inductedwere Dan Loprieno- Harper, Tony Kenning-Ridgewater, Colothdian Tate-Colby, DanielBreedlove-Blackhawk, and John Johnson-Iowa.

Iowa Central is only the third team ever towin three straight crowns. North Idaho andLassen (Calif.) have previously won fourstraight. North Idaho did it from 1985-88.Lassen did it from 1995-98. The Triton’s willbe gunning for their fourth straight title in2009!! So, make plans now to join us inRochester in late February, where once againChuck Siefert from Rochester Communityand Technical College and Ed Hruska fromthe Rochester Amateur Sports Commissionalong with their dedicated staff will againhost the NJCAA nationals, which is arguablyone of the best run tournaments in the nationin a super location.
