AdventThe Season of Expectancy

Advent is the season that begins the Christian Church year in preparation for the celebration of the nativity of Christ and Christmas. The word "advent" means "coming to" and refers to God's coming to mankind through the birth of Christ.

Advent is a season of preparation and expectancy and is often referred to as "winter lent." Edward T. Horn in his book, The Christian Year, states, "Advent has come to have a threefold meaning for the church:

(1) The advent of our Lord in the flesh at Christmas.(2) The advent of our Lord in Word and in Spirit.(3) The advent of our Lord in glory at the end of time."

The Advent Wreaths at our church are symbols with a special meaning as we prepare for the Nativity of Christ. We have five wreaths, four purple candles representing the four Sundays of advent. Purple is the liturgical color for Advent. The fifth candle is white and symbolizes the birth of Christ.

Purple symbolizes the royalty and majesty of Christ and the meditation and repentance of worshipers. This white candle represents purity. The wreaths are round, with no beginning or end, testifying to the never-ending love of God.

The nativity scene represents the night that Christ was born in Bethlehem.

The lighting of the candles helps us to remember the One who said, "I am the Light of the World."

Responsive Reading(For the Lighting of the Advent Candle)

“Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.

The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.

And He will delight in the fear of the LORD, and He will not judge by what His eyes see, nor make a decision by what His ears hear;

But with righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; and He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips will slay the wicked.

Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, and faithfulness the belt about His waist.

And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little boy will lead them.”
