A long delightful medieval legend narrates this tale, in which the wood cross that Helena found had originally been the tree of life in the Garden of Eden. The excavated "true cross" was displayed in Jerusalem for the people's reverence on Good Friday, and splinters of it were sent throughout the Christian world as relics that meant to connect people with the mercy of God. FOCUS ON WORSHIP

Holy Cross Day, September 14: This festival, which originated in the fourth century, celebrates the triumph of

the cross. Paul reminds us that Christ crucified is the power and wisdom of God. As Moses put a serpent on a pole

to be a source of healing for the Israelites, we lift high the cross as the sign of our health and salvation. Each time

we make the sign of the cross we remember our baptism into the death and resurrection of Christ. In the fourth

century, Queen Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, made a pilgrimage to Israel to look for Christian holy

sites. She found what she believed were the sites of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus, sites that modern

archaeologists believe may be correct. She oversaw some archaeological digs in Jerusalem, during which was

excavated what she and others believed to be the true cross of Jesus. A long delightful medieval legend narrates

this tale, in which the wood cross that Helena found had originally been the tree of life in the Garden of Eden. The

excavated "true cross" was displayed in Jerusalem for the people's reverence on Good Friday, and splinters of it

were sent throughout the Christian world as relics that meant to connect people with the mercy of God. At one of

the excavations in Jerusalem, Constantine ordered the construction of a church, and on Sept. 14, 335, the Church

of the Resurrection was dedicated. The celebration of Holy Cross Day originated with the dedication of this church.

Subsequently this date became more attached to Helena's finding of the "true cross." Since then some Christians

have kept this date in honor of the cross, on which Christ brought about the life of the world. Today the festival

provides the church an opportunity to lift up the victory of the cross with a spirit of celebration that might be less

suitable on Good Friday. The Orthodox call the festival the Elevation of the Cross.

A MESSAGE FROM

PASTOR FRED

Family Circle

Last newsletter I related the story of the man whose wife died after childbirth

because he didn't have the insurance or cash to pay the ambulance ride to the hospital.

He is now part of what I call my Family Circle of prayer. Today I have added another

person to this circle. I met him at the DaVita dialysis center where I take Lesley three

times a week

He is an elderly man, very thin and in obvious poor health. However after a few

visits we started to know each other better and I heard about another problem that he

faces. He does not have a car nor anyone in his family to take him to dialysis. So, he

depends on a private transportation company to bring him to dialysis. Fortunately,

Medicare pays for this transportation so we might see this as a good use of tax payer

funds. But there is more to the story.

There have been several times when the transportation has arrived late which

results in throwing off the schedule at the dialysis center And on one occasion when

he was having difficulty leaving his house with his walker, the driver of the truck

never looked to see his plight and while looking away assumed that he was not going

to need a ride and left the poor man on his doorstep. When this man returned inside

his house he called the transportation company and was told he would have to wait

until tomorrow because the driver's schedule was filled for the day.

This man is now part of what I call my Family Circle of prayer, there are others

there too, most of them are the people who have to fight for their dignity as human

beings.

So, I want to recommend to you your own Family Circle of prayer. You don't have

to look far, they are in the news or even ahead of you in a grocery checkout line. It

costs nothing and can bring you ever deeper into seeing the face of Jesus in those

struggle everyday to survive.

In Peace,

Pastor Fred

Concerts & Recitals: St. Luke’s sanctuary serves as a wonderful recital hall for many musical concerts throughout the year. Check out the schedule of concert & recitals which Tammy Hammond dutifully updates regularly. Peace, Richard Barnett Director of Music St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church P. S. Regular Handbell rehearsal and Chancel Choir rehearsals resume on Sept. 6. Handbell practice is at 6:30pm. Chancel Choir is at 7:30pm. Do you like to sing or play handbells? We have a great chancel choir and a great handbell choir. Many of these folks have been choir members for years, but we are always looking for newcomers! If you’ve previously sang or played handbells in a church choir, sang in a high school choir or college choir, we invite you to come check us out on Thursday evenings. If you’ve never sung anywhere, you are still invited. Can you play an instrument? Musicians are also invited. Please consider joining us. It's a fun way to be involved in church life and to contribute to our worship service. I hope to see you at choir rehearsal!

Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services and communion, Altar Bread Bakers and other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy. In our music department, we have Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members and all sorts of Musicians. We are so thankful to have these folks assist us every week but we can always use more help. If you are interested in serving the Lord at our church and would like more info about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship and Music Ministry, we would love to hear from you. to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a

special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a

certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed

directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home

after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the

container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience. You may sign up on the chart located in the fellowship hall.

The 2018 Flower Chart Calendar

The 2018 Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone that signed up for our open Altar Flowers dates. We appreciate it.

We now have at least one arrangement of flowers for every Sunday for the rest of the year.

Please remember, Altar Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

We love when we have two arrangements for Sunday morning so please feel free to check out the chart!

If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. The Altar Flower Chart

is hanging in the fellowship hall near the kitchen.

“God’s Work, Our Hand’s”

Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event

September 8, 2018, 9:30am to 11:30am

This year we are once again uniting with “Rise Against Hunger” (formerly Stop Hunger Now) to

make meals for the hungry throughout the world. We plan to break last year’s record of 20,000 meals!

We packaged 20,000 meals in two hours. Wow! That’s a tremendous amount! We thank everyone that

helped us last year, our church members young and older and other friends of St. Luke. As you can see by

the pictures below, we worked hard but had a great time doing it! We hope to see you again this year on

September 8, 2018, 9:30am to 11:30am.

“Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

who trespass against us;” As we go into the world and care for those who do not have

their “daily bread” we also tell the wonderful love and life in Jesus Christ. We are

fulfilling Jesus command to go into all the world and tell the Good News of Jesus Christ

to everyone!

What can I do besides helping pack the meals? You can donate to our “Rise Against Hunger” project.

We need to raise $6,000.00. Please write “ Rise Against Hunger” on the memo line of your check.

Please contact Marty Witthoefft to sign up to help pack the meals or is you have any questions.

Phone 804-272-9584 or Email [email protected].

St. Luke Lutheran Church and

Kroger Community Rewards Fundraising Program Update

Your attention please. Effective August 17, 2018 Kroger has updated it’s Kroger Community

Rewards program.

What is this program?

You can use your regular Kroger Plus Card and raise money for our church. All you have to do is go online to

www.kroger.com/communityrewards and register your individual Kroger Plus Card to St. Luke’s account by clicking

Enroll. You can search for St. Luke by name. Once you enroll your card, all linked Kroger Plus Cards in your household

will also begin to earn funds for St. Luke. Restriction do apply: fuel, alcohol, tobacco, stamps, lottery tickets, money

orders, sales tax and some pharmacy purchases are excluded.

What do I have to do?

To put it simply, beginning this month, please go online and register your regular Kroger shopping card, your

Kroger Plus Card with the Kroger Community Rewards program and designate St. Luke Lutheran Church

as your organization. After that, every time you shop at Kroger and scan your Kroger Plus Card, St. Luke will earn

rewards for your purchases.

Please note:

If you do not yet have a Kroger Plus card, they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger. You will need

to sign up at Kroger.com and create an account (if you haven’t all ready done so) before you can enroll your Kroger

Plus Card in this program. If you need help signing up online with your Kroger Plus Card, someone from St. Luke will

be happy to assist you in doing so.

What’s the updated info?

Kroger has recently upgraded their Community Rewards system, and as a result, our Non-Profit Organization (NPO)

has a new account number. (SX749) Please reference the new number when contacting Kroger for assistance. Kroger

asked us to share this new number our members. While the previous number will continue to be associated with our

organization, it will not be visible to our members when enrolling. New members can enroll by searching for either the

new number or the name of your organization.

Thank you updating your information yearly with Kroger and for participating in our fund raising projects.
