Welcome to theWorld Carp ClassicWelcome to Madine for the World Carp Classic 2011. As I am sure you will agree, Madine is a fantastic venue, and with many records being broken in each of the previous three events it excites me to imagine what might be possible this year.

Once again we can expect that familiar surge of electricity as the famous World Carp Classic atmosphere kicks in, as it always does when anglers from all over the world converge on the banks to contest the title. All of this, everything you see and much more that you don’t see, happens because of you and is only possible because of you.. your participation in the event is absolutely vital to its existence. Old friends or new, as you arrive here to take part in this year’s event, I hope you enjoy every moment.. it’s a special time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Title Sponsor and Partners, JRC, for their continued support of the event, also our section sponsors, and support, media and local partners too, for their participation and backing. It is also very encouraging that the high level of respect that the World Carp Classic has gained and has seen its global marketing potential endorsed by a good number of product launches and promotions.

This past year has been an incredibly fulfilling one for me personally and I am eternally grateful for the support of my fantastic and loyal team. Year on year, we try to build upon what we have, always seeking new ways to enhance or improve the event. It is important to us to continually challenge what we have, then, set ourselves new targets as we strive to push the boundaries still further to build upon it.

With that in mind, this year saw the launch of Angling Spirit, created by me to become the umbrella company for the events we now organise. The inaugural World Catfish Classic took place in June 2011 and was a hugely successful and enjoyable event. Alongside that event, an initiative named ‘Friends of the Ebro’ was born, and the resulting clean-up of the banks to address a serious environmental issue, was something that I can only describe as hugely gratifying. I cannot stress enough how thankful and proud I was of the assembled team who carried out the hard work, shifting what was later estimated to be 25 tonnes of rubbish from over 11km of bank, leaving it in a condition that locals say they haven’t witnessed for many years.

On that note, and remembering absent friends who have touched our lives, all that remains for me to say is that I hope you enjoy your time here at Madine and that the World Carp Classic experience is a good one for you all. I wish you all the very best of luck and if Madine’s jewels reveal themselves to you, I may be shaking your hand at the prize giving! - After which, I will be making a very important and exciting announcement about 2012 that you really should hear.

There is a huge amount of hard work that goes on continually, culminating in a massive effort prior to the competition and again afterwards. Without the help and hard work of the fantastic World Carp Classic Team and

support help, the competition would quite simply not happen. I am very proud of the WCC Team and I would like to present them to you here with my deepest thanks.

A warm welcome to you all from JRC, title Sponsor of the World Carp Classic 2011

A great welcome to all and hopefully, once again, this will be a wonderful time for all competitors to share experiences on the lake side.

We are now in the 6th year of being Title Sponsor for the tournament, with this year being the 4th consecutive year here at Lac de Madine. This means that many of the teams will be able to take advantage and use the experience they gained in the past four years, for this year’s event.

We had some great experiences last spring on the lake when we were testing some new Berkley baits and we had a great catch of specimen carp to confirm the high potential of big fish in this venue.

As title sponsor, JRC - as part of Pure Fishing international group - supports this event and will continue to promote carp fishing as a great sport on a worldwide scale.

The first World Catfish Classic, held in June 2011 in Chiprana,

Spain, was a fabulous new experience for all and it was a great event to extend the great experience and organization of the World Carp Classic event.

We took another important step there with the creation of the Friends of the Ebro association, organizing the “cleaning” of the waterways in the location of the tournament.

The response to that action has been absolutely great and we will of course continue to promote this process as one of the main strategic principles in Pure Fishing Company; to respect nature in all aspects.

We are very proud of this ethic and we want to extend the promotion of respect for the environment with all of our partners for future events. For sure, in future events organized both in carp and

catfish fishing, this will be of benefit to the overall promotion of fishing worldwide.

For the World Carp Classic 2011 here at Madine, we hope that you will once again enjoy the event, meet some old and new fishing friends and share a great experience together.

We are so happy that every year, we have more and new participants from all over the world taking part in this worldwide event. We have more targets for the future and there are more dreams to fulfil - but this is still a secret, a story that we will share later.

Marshals with know-howIn 2003, an agreement with Sparsholt College saw Students presented as Marshals for the first time. This move proved to be highly successful as it enabled on-site, 24-hour marshalling of the event, an element which had been identified as an absolute necessity for the World Carp Classic.

With the competition expanding still further in 2006, Shuttleworth College, Bedfordshire, England also provided Marshals for the competition. The Students - young men and women undergoing Fisheries courses at their respective Colleges - along with their Tutors, will play a very important role throughout the event.

It is with the greatest of pleasure that we once again welcome the Students and we hope that competitors will assist them in every way possible to ensure that the Event runs smoothly.

Welcome to the next chapter of the World Carp Classic here at the fabulous lake Madine with its beautiful, big carp.

Much preparation goes into the event, and not only by the WCC team, as I know how much preparation is carried out by competitors in the lead up to try to ensure that they give themselves the best possible chance.

There is a long list of rules, but that is a necessity for an event of this stature to ensure fair play and, most of all, the safety of all competitors, so please read the full list of rules to ensure that you understand them. Below is a highlight of the rules, covering some of those that are abused most often.

DISTANCEThe maximum distance that you may fish is 200 metres. As in previous years, I will be putting out markers just beyond that range to indicate the maximum distance. This will also help the marshals to determine if anyone is breaking the rule. Last year it was disappointing to see how many markers were missing when I went out to recover them after the event. As a result, this year, if a team is found to have removed a distance marker, either during or directly after the competition, then I will seriously consider disqualifying them. A ban of any form will automatically exclude an angler from the following year’s event, as a minimum.

BOATSJust a couple of points here; there is a list of items that you will need to have for the boat check and this equipment is important for safety reasons.

Please read this section carefully and ensure that you have everything required before getting your boat checked. These items are required for a reason, so please keep them in your boat during the event.

You can only use the boat for fishing, echo sounding and looking around your swim and only when the competition has started. You may use your boat to get to your swim with your equipment, but that is it. When the competition starts, one competitor must always be on the bank. A competitor and a runner may go out in the boat but never both competitors. Also remember that your runner can only steer and manage the boat, he cannot take part in the fishing side, netting etc.

Always remember to wear your lifejacket every time you go out in the boat - more yellow cards are given out for competitors forgetting to wear them than any other offence. In fairness, it is

getting better but please do remember to put your lifejacket on each and every time. It is good practice for all members of the team to check and remind each other.

Last year I didn’t have to take any action because the wind behaved itself, but 2009 saw me putting out temporary bans on the use of boats for short periods of time because of the storms and very strong winds on the lake. This decision was not taken lightly and it did not go down well with some competitors because a few swims were sheltered. However, I cannot make a swim by swim decision and I have to be fair to everyone. Safety is the number one concern here.

Even for one of the safety boats, which had a petrol engine, it was difficult in the waves, so with a dinghy and electric engine it would have been impossible. Hopefully, that situation won’t repeat itself this year, but the weather is unpredictable and if the lake becomes dangerous because of the wind I will do the same, so please be patient if it does happen.

WEEDI’m writing this just over a month before the start of the event, so I don’t know as yet what the weed situation will be on the lake - it changes year by year and some areas will be weedier than others.

What was interesting, last year, was that the areas where the weed had been cut right back it fished worse than it had in previous years, so if you have a weedy swim, rather than moan about it be positive as it is likely to hold carp. A lot of weed drifts around after the weed cutter has done its job and it can turn up in new areas after strong winds, and this could be the case during the event. If you find weed rafts etc in your swim that you need to get over, then the easiest way is to row over them rather than trying to use your outboard and getting it clogged up with weed.

RUBBISHAs was the case last year, you should all ensure that you take all of your bags of rubbish away with you at the end of the match. There are plenty of containers around the lake, and also in the car

parks and at the boat launch areas. The clean up after the event in 2010

was much, much better and very little was left to clean up, in fact, only a couple of teams let everyone down. Madine has responsible lake owners who recognize the need to be more environmentally friendly, to recycle more rubbish and keep the place clean.

We as carp fishermen should do whatever we can to help with this, not only at Madine but each and every time we go fishing.

I look forward to seeing you either prior to the event or whilst fishing, as I do try to get around during the week to see as many of you as possible.

Fish well, respect those fishing around you and any fish that you catch, as fish care is very important.

Please respect the Marshals in your section as they are my eyes and ears and, above all have fun and enjoy the World Carp Classic 2011.

lesThe following information is a small selection the rules. If you have forgotten or lost the full set we provided, please ask to view your section marshal’s copyIIE DU BOISTHE BIG ISLANDThere will be only two daily crossings between the mainland and the big island. On each crossing priority boarding will be given in the following order: to officials, accredited media and only then to competitors and other team members.

It will be the competitor’s/team member’s sole responsibility to ensure that they do not miss the return crossing, especially the final daily crossing as no other crossings will be permitted.

A few reminders on the rules (Please comply with full and official Rules as provided)

The following is a small selection only, briefly covering just a few rules. If you have forgotten or lost the full set of rules we provided, please ask to view your section marshal’s copy.

GENERAL RULESl In the occurrence that a pair misses their call to come on stage, the draw will proceed in order, without them.l The missing pair will then be recalled to the stage after the draw has been completed and prior to any possible late arrivals/registrations.

RECORDING A CATCHl Each fish must be witnessed by at least two marshals or by one marshal and one competitor other than the captor, fellow Team Member, Team Runner or Team Helper. l If a Marshal is not immediately available, carp must be retained in a carp sack until such a time as a Marshal becomes available.

l Only one carp should be placed in each sack.

BOAT & SAFETY MEASURESSpot checks of boats will be conducted by Marshals throughout the competition and Local Authorities may also conduct their own checks. If a boat is found to be non-compliant by Local Authorities, it is at their sole discretion to impose local laws, which could include a fine and/or confiscation of boats.

RESPECTFUL CONDUCTPlease give your respect and assistance to the Event Officials and Marshals and allow them to do their work quickly and efficiently. If you

give them your full cooperation and comply to their requests wherever possible it will help to ensure the smooth running of the event and avoid any unnecessary conflict. Also, please show respect at all times to your fellow anglers, the fish, and members of the public, and of course the environment.

The very last thing we want is for us to be put in a position where we have to issue warnings or take action against wrong-doers and rule breakers. The rules, as set out in full, are there to protect the angler, the environment and the fish, and they have been carefully thought through, tried and tested. Please read them thoroughly to familiarise yourself with them, and adhere to them fully.

l Official photos are to be taken by the Marshals on their mobile and relayed to HQ immediately.l Three photos are required to display: the angler and fish with peg board in view - competitors signed catch log card - the Marshals log card.l Marshals to wait for a return text from HQ to acknowledge receipt of all photos before authorizing the fish to be released.l All fish to be returned to the

water in the presence of the Marshal only after authorisation.l Several other shots may have to be taken, so please allow official photographers to carry out their requirements without hindrance.l Competitors, Team Runners and others are then welcome to take their own photos, but only after careful consideration by first monitoring the comfort level and welfare of the carp. l If requested by a Marshal to do

so, the fish should be released back to the water immediately, or sacked up to recover if deemed necessary. l Do not attempt to release a fish that cannot swim away strongly. It is far better to allow it to recover quietly in the confines of a carp sack for a short time before trying again. l Your Marshal will assist you in making this decision should you have any doubts.

y Reigning Champions, George Csonka and John Roberts of England had a remarkable story to tell, and we can share that with you here ..

later, after the pain... it was a pretty uncomfortable week for both of us, John for obvious reasons and me, because of the situation we were in... I had to stop wearing my chest waders and spend the rest of the week in a pair of wellie boots and shorts. I was totally drenched, constantly, but I couldn’t allow that to deter me from the fishing in any way. The lead was changing hands for the first few days between PVTV 1 and us so we had to fish hard.

‘We were fairly confident that we could match their numbers and as our fish seemed to be of a better stamp, hopefully, we would pull away from them at some stage.

As it turned out, Team PVTV1 were a little unfortunate and lost a few fish, which obviously helped our cause, but that’s fishing, it could have been us who were losing fish!

Because of my enforced modus operandi, I never actually saw very many of the fish until much later because, after handing them to John to deal with and sack up, I was straight back out there, repositioning the rods. The biggest carp was just over 50lb and I never saw that

get the boat through so we had to push it out as far as we could to about 15 yards out, where the water was at thigh depth. That was all we could manage, otherwise, if we went any further it was too difficult to actually get into the boat.

It was John who hooked the first fish, but as he tried to get into the boat – because he is disabled with major back problems – it was too difficult for him and he slipped, unfortunately hurting his back severely as he fell. From that point on John was almost completely out of action in fishing terms. However, John helped me throughout the rest of the competition doing whatever he could, like taking the fish off me and sacking them so that I could go straight back out to reset the traps. Without John being there, doing what he could, there is no question that it would have been a much bigger problem for me and I really mean it when I say that winning it was only made possible with Johns help. Anyone put in my position would have done what I did, but not everyone put in Johns position would have done what he did!

The World Carp Classic 2010 was a truly outstanding event, and one which produced some incredible drama throughout the entire week.

With many records ultimately being broken for a third successive year, the highly charged emotion elevated the intensity of pre-match anticipation amongst the anglers to a new level, and it was certainly not lost on the occasion. Madine is without doubt a remarkable venue and even when its banks are occupied by 260, albeit highly competent world class anglers, it can still produce amazing results. For many anglers, Madine once more provided action and with a record number of anglers catching fish the race for prizes was kept open right up to the closing moments of the event.

At the draw, George Csonka and John Roberts of England had the amazing good fortune to pull out the exact peg that they most desired. The pair were so confident that the peg would ultimately prove to be the winning peg that, earlier that day, they had left a message for whoever drew it. The message simply read “World Carp Classic Champions 2010”. However, just by saying something can happen doesn’t mean that it will so, when the pair then drew the peg, the self-inflicted pressure was on them to back up their words! We all know the outcome - they were prophetic words indeed.

We interviewed George just a couple of weeks after the event. Here is their story:

‘Although competition angling wasn’t really my scene, when John invited me to fish in the team back in 2000, we caught the biggest fish of the event at Madine that year.

The following year we fished together in the WCC on Lac Amance then, a few years later, we fished together in the competition here on Madine in 2009. We didn’t intend to take part in the event in 2010, but it proved too hard to resist.

As it turned out, this year turned out to be the best it could ever be for us. We were obviously delighted to get the swim we ideally wanted, although we already knew that it wasn’t going to be too easy to fish from. The problem was that there was a large weed bed stretched out directly in front of the swim and for about 40 yards out. As we had feared, the weed proved to be far too heavy to

until the following morning when the marshals came to weigh it, but it didn’t matter, this was a small price to pay and we wanted to win the event. By the Wednesday night I had completely run out of dry clothes and having to wear soaking wet wellie boots meant that my feet were continuously drenched. Worse still, to accompany my boots I only had a pair of shorts to wear... I was freezing.

In fact, on the Thursday night, because I was so cold I suffered a temporary loss of feeling in my fingers and I kept dropping the boilies as I was trying to put them on the hair. Because my fingers were so numb I was bent over for ages, fumbling with them but determined to pick them up, and when John asked in a bemused voice “what are you doing?”... I replied “well, they’re not escaping; they could be the boilies that win us the competition!”

Working off of a moon-phase chart, I had evaluated everything and considered that on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday it would fish really well, and that Friday was a only a ‘maybe day’... you might catch, but you might not. Up until the Friday we had been catching fish regularly throughout every

day and evening, so at about 5PM on the Friday, I said to John, look mate, we haven’t had a take all day today and if we aren’t catching here it will be the same story everywhere on the lake. If the fish have stopped feeding completely we’ll be ok, but if we can manage to nick another fish, it could be enough for us. It was a nerve-wracking night for us and no doubt PVTV1, as they were still in contention and a couple of good fish could decide it.

‘Finally, we were told that we had won it, and we were obviously over the moon with that news, but all I really wanted to do was collapse in a heap and go to sleep.

I could barely walk, and not just because of sleep deprivation. The soles of my feet, having been continuously ensconced in wet wellies all week, were splitting and extremely sore, and I grimaced at every firm handshake of congratulations because my hands were suffering just as badly, with split skin everywhere. I watched the prize giving with great interest as almost every swim that I had put on my top list had produced fish and the anglers

occupying them were among the prize winners. It was a great moment when our names were called out to go on stage, and to stand there, receiving the trophy and the applause was amazing. It is now two full weeks since we claimed the World Carp Classic Title for 2010 - and I can still barely walk. Was it worth it? You bet it was, every painful step of the way!’

The move will see the Richworth Cameras on the banks of some of Europe’s top fisheries filming the companies’ consultants.

As the competition continues to expand year upon year, it continues to draw anglers from countries that have never participated previously.

This, of course, creates further global interest and international media attention. An example of that occurs yet again this year, as it did last year with the participation of the team from Australia and in 2009 with the inclusion of Japan. This time around it’s the turn of teams from Denmark and China to make their debut in the event. We would like to give these teams a special mention here and wish them well for the competition. afternoons before the peg draw are a tense time for competitors.

So, over the past two years, WCC Team title sponsor, Carp Connections, has established an interesting and entertaining side attraction that takes place during the build-up to the main event, to add some spice for the teams competing – the Gladiator Games.

This competition is an obvious crowd-pleaser, with its mad-cap themes of wader-filling, rope-pulling and weight lifting, to name but a few!

A team consists of three registered pairs and the competition has a prize table for 1st, 2nd and 3rd best team. The winners are calculated on the combined weight caught by all 3 pairs.

Each of the first three teams will win a week long holiday for six anglers to Fishing resort Du Der. Over 100 acres in size, covering four lakes, the venue boasts an incredible stock of fish with 1,500 carp all over 20lbs+ and several mirrors and one common over 50 lbs this is a superb holiday.

The Games takes place at Carp Connections beach, Madine 2/3, just next to the sailing school, so, whether you want to take part or just watch the spectacle, there is


no doubt that these Games are a lot of fun.The competition is the brainchild of Carp

Connections’ Hans Sissingh and are run in association with JRC, Shakespeare and Berkley GULP, who provide some great prizes for the victorious gladiators as the spoils of war.

Your host for the frivolities is none other than Hans himself, who is sure to make himself heard with the aid of his trusty loud-hailer... you have been warned!

HOW TO ENTER:It is completely free of charge to enter the Gladiator Games, however, it is only open to registered teams who have signed up at HQ. So why not head on over to HQ, register your team. Events include:

It is not without good reason that all life on earth is affected by or even controlled by the gravitational affects and other factors such as reflected light from the sun.

The words lunatic and lunacy are derived from noted abnormal behaviour in humans caused by the moons influence, and there exists a factual and statistically significant correlation between the solunar effect and many human ailments. In regard to other life forms the evidence is clear, with some creatures being affected far more than others or in different ways for different reasons.

That aside for the moment, for many years I tried to unlock many of the mysteries that I was confronted with in relation to carp angling in general and, gradually, piece by piece, I discovered new information that fitted into the vast

overall conundrum. The main problem with trying to pinpoint and understand exactly why carp do certain things, or react in specific ways, is that there are so many variables to consider but, undaunted by the enormity of the task I kept chipping away at different elements as each presented itself.

The search for information led me in many directions over the years and like a never-ending maze it offered a tantalising choice of paths, some of which were interesting and would lead me on to the next junction, but many were dead ends of no significance. There is no question here, to understand just one element you may need to fully understand a number of others before you can even begin to comprehend where it fits in to the bigger picture.... Like a jig-saw puzzle, where you need to be able to determine a common denominator, a shape, characteristic or colour in combination, and you need to refer back to the bigger picture for clues.

One of these paths led me to an aspect that enthrals me; the concept that not all carp are caught, and that known, uncaught mystery fish exist in almost every body of water. This could be that not all carp eat the same food and, as 99% of anglers offer virtually the same thing, boilies, the 5% of fish that never fed on them were very unlikely to ever be caught by the 1% of anglers’ not using boilies. - Put in simple terms, we don’t actually use bait which is acceptable to them and

they don’t recognise what we do offer as being food. But could

there be other reasons I had yet to discover?

The subject of certain carp being only natural feeders is a very interesting one in itself, but there are several aspects that can be alluded to that confound many theories. The most basic explanation I can offer here in limited space, from what I can determine, it’s mostly genetics at work and that common carp make up a very large proportion of the uncaught mystery fish.

My desire to understand this aspect indeed led me on and required me to learn other aspects, and what I discovered was quite revealing.

Not only were these uncaught monsters feeding differently, on a natural food source, but due to this habit they most often fed in vastly different areas, for obvious reasons. Not being shoal fish, or more specifically, being large fish in possibly very small groups, demands a different routine. This led me on to explore other avenues of thought.

Natural feeding fish have a heightened or more natural usage and dependency on their sensory devices, and the ability to use electro-magnetic detection to hunt for food is crucial to any predatory natural feeder. Every living organism emits an electro-magnetic signature and many predatory fish are fully dependant on a sensory ability to detect this field. It was also interesting to discover that light-emitting bacteria existing in fresh water are not only bioluminescent but, in mass give off a significant electro-magnetic footprint. It is reported to take three days to proliferate, I learned, and that fact posed another question about our own 3-day bait theory. It is often said that, especially on big waters, it can sometimes take three days before carp will move in on a bed of bait - is that perhaps because these carp are wilder in nature and are more in tune with natural feeding? It is surely possible that, after the three days, carp unfamiliar with angling bait are attracted by the massive electro-magnetic footprint or bioluminescence produced by the bacteria on our bait and not to the bait itself which, by

Apart from natural feeding habits there are of course many other aspects that determine where carp will be and whether or not they will feed. Environmental aspects are certainly a major influence in that respect and that is another area I concentrated my research on. I cannot accept the philosophy of others without understanding how their theories were formed and what factual elements were used to base them on. I much prefer to research available sources, hopefully discovering aspects along the way to determine things for myself and form my own theories.

We all pretty much understand that weather conditions directly affect the aquatic environment and therefore the fish, which are immediately affected by every small change. We also know that oxygen levels, water quality and many other elements determine where carp will be. It is now generally accepted that barometric pressure has an influence in all of that too. Likewise, many anglers believe in the phenomenon of the affects of moon phase, and even if it remains a bit of a mystery to most ‘why’ it has an effect, many anglers are happy to believe in it because, through results, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that it does.

My own theories are constantly challenged by me to determine if they are correct and in relation to the moon phase theory, I now believe there is a correlation to water pressure, pretty much as if it alters or adds to the affect of barometric pressure.

I monitored the affects of moon phase during the course of a one-month fishing session on a large, deep water in Spain and going by the timing of my captures in relation to the position of the moon, it revealed something very interesting indeed.

The bottom line is that I now believe that as far as having an effect on carp goes, the moon phase is on a par with barometric pressure, which I consider to be of great significance in my angling. My theory may seem a little raw, but there was a noticeable pattern

which allowed me to think more clearly about the moon phase phenomena, in particular the claim of it producing big fish at certain phases. This factor became very clear to me over this, albeit short period of time.

In fact, it was so obvious that it left me scratching my head as to why I had not noticed it previously. Firstly, to understand my theory on big fish captures on certain moon phases, you may need to know my beliefs on barometric pressure; it drops, so do carp, it rises and so do carp. As water pressure increases or decreases it affects a carp’s ability to maintain neutral buoyancy and causes it to naturally rise or fall in the water accordingly. It’s largely a question of carp not adjusting their swim bladders and temporarily moving for what may be a short-term barometric change.

Basically a full moon, because of its gravitational pull, has the affect of decreasing water pressure, which is effectively an increase in barometric pressure, and all carp will respond to that by rising in the water, up off the bottom and thus away from your bait. When the moon is directly overhead the affect is much more noticeable, and as the moon drops lower toward the horizon the affect lessens. In fact, what occurs is a gradual but continuous change in water pressure and carp move up or down in the water accordingly. As the moon drops in the sky they will drop in the water and, dependant on the depth you are fishing at, begin to feed on your bait once more. By fishing baits at different depths the results proved this to be the case beyond question.

Now, this is where the really interesting bit is for me. Larger carp, being required to feed at different times and/or in different areas because of the natural food source, I think, respond differently to the reduction in water pressure and whereas shoal fish rise in the water, the needs of a big, hungry carp may demand that it takes the opportunity to feed whilst the smaller shoal fish have vacated the baited area. Not only this, but it is likely that a large carp may well live most of its life in the deeper parts of a water, and its constant search for food may

dictate that rather than move directly up in the water in response to water pressure changes, it moves laterally into shallower areas to continue feeding, and that would include the type of depths that we are fishing.

In the course of the month that I studied this, noting the affects around the clock, there was a distinct and predictable pattern that emerged. This pattern corresponded with the position of the moon, so as each day passed, the timing of noticeable feeding action (runs) shifted. There was a definite correlation between the two that was only interrupted on one occasion... one particular time when I would have expected action only from big fish, only small fish were forthcoming. That fact, far from being a negative, can be easily explained by the presence of a huge drop in barometric pressure which to all tense and purpose nullified the less significant lunar pull allowing the smaller carp to continue feeding.

For me, this session proved beyond any doubt that the moon phase has a direct and significant effect on carp, and according to the position of the moon I could predict with some confidence whether I would catch smaller shoal fish or their larger brethren.

From now on, big moon, big fish is my motto. Tight lines to all competitors for the World Carp Classic 2011.

Congratulations and thanks go to the organisers of the hugely successful 2011 World Carp Classic Qualifying Events. Many congratulations also to the victorious anglers who won through to be with us here at Madine!

The Czech Republic Qualification match for the World Carp Classic took

place from 27th to 29th May 2011 on Lake Hejlov, 8 km from Pelhřimov and Jet Fish headquarters.

The competitors gathered on the bank on the 26th May for the peg draw and a barbecue

afterwards. Unfortunately there was bad weather, with thunderstorms and heavy rain, and the temperature dropped making it cold. As a result the fishing was slow and takes

were coming only from smaller carp, with the biggest carp weighing 14.05 kg.

In an extremely close contest, 3rd place went to Leos Sin and Jiri Vilhan with 37,03 kg. In 2nd place and runners-up were Fero Stary and Vlado Deak with 40,27 kg, and the ultimate winners of the Jet Fish Sponsored Czech Republic Qualifier were Jiri Kral & Petr Hrubes with 42,98 kg.

Congratulations go to Jiri and Petr who will now go forward to fish in the World Carp Classic at Madine to represent the Czech Republic with our best wishes.

The inaugural Daiwa Tzaneen Carp Classic was held from the 28th June to

the 2nd July on Tzaneen Dam, Limpopo. With a minimum weight for the carp set at

7kg, tactics were very different to any other angling tournament held in South Africa. The high minimum weight combined with the rules being very close to how specimen anglers fish naturally, the event attracted the cream of SA’s specimen Carp anglers.

Day 1 produced just two fish over the minimum weight and Day 2 was equally difficult; with a few more fish coming out. On Day 3 Conditions were very tough, but a pattern of which pegs could be

in contention, emerged.The big prize of the evening was the Wild

Card selection to accompany Hennie du Preez and Andries Maree to the World Carp Classic in France.

After much deliberation they finally decided upon Bruce McKinley, who was very excited about joining the team, and will make a worthy companion to the overseas campaign.

The Daiwa Tzaneen Carp Classic 2011 is an annual event and the gateway for all South African’s to fish the World Carp Classic. Next year we’ll be holding qualifying events in various provinces, with the final

again to be held in Tzaneen.d end June, early August.

It was the 2nd time that a World Carp Classic Qualifying Event had taken place at this

beautiful lake in Pobiedziska The event, organized by Karp Max magazine,

took place between 25th and 29th May and saw 17 pairs battling it out on Dobro Klasztorne Lake near Poznan in central Poland. In total there were 73 carp caught for a weight of 566.2 kg.

WCC Qualification Events 2011

The Danish Qualifiers consisted of four qualifying events held in

late May set in three different lakes. One qualifier took place in Viborg another

in Langesø and two in Pedersborg, with only one pair from each round going through to fish in the final.

Four teams qualified for the final in Glumsø, held at the beginning of July.

The contestants started fishing at 10:00 on Friday, but nothing happened until evening, when the Langesø winners were the first to put a carp on the bank. Eventual winners were Niels

Alex Larsen - a rock’n’roll drummer - and Brian Westergaard, the owner of CcMoore.dk and sponsor of the championships. The pair obliterated all opposition by catching 10 carp between them in the 48-hours and won hands down.

The winners, Niels ‘Lucky’ Larsen and Brian Westergaard are really looking forward to visiting Madine for the very first time. They are both experienced anglers and have caught several 50’s and 60’s from difficult European venues. We wish them the best of luck!

Amsterdam’s DuQ (Dutch World Carp Classic Qualifier) has

been a tough one!On the morning of the match, heavy

storms caused a dangerous situation on the banks of the 210 acre Amsterdam Sloterplas.30 pairs worked their way through heavy rain as they boated out to get to their swims but, an hour after the start, due to huge waves, there was no more rowing out lines, baiting by boat or any other use of

boats permitted until further notice.On the second and third day of the match

the winds dropped off and with the water now calmer the boat ban was lifted. However, not many fish were caught. After a struggle and some hardcore fishing, finally, four carp were landed, of which two were beautiful linear carp.

Third place (PENN reels) went to a well known Dutch pair, Rubert Kasmin and his vice Ricardo Schroder, who have fished in the World Carp Classic for many years. Another pair, Coen vh Klooster and his vice caught the very first fish of the event to secure 2nd place (Pure

Fishing Resort Du Der).Winners of the event were Ference vd Vorstenbosch put themselves

into the final at Lac de Madine with the capture of a very

nice 30lb Linear.Both 1st and

3rd place pairs are members of Team Carp

Having assisted Ross Honey for a number of years in relation to the World Carp Classic, I have learned much that has dispelled any perpetuated myths that existed.

Yes, Ross is first and foremost a businessman, but he is also an avid angler who cares about the sport far more than is generally recognised.

It might surprise you to learn that, for many years, Ross has been quietly active behind the scenes trying to do his bit to put something back into angling, and in ways that are way beyond the capacity and means of the vast majority of us.

Make no mistake here; Ross is very passionate about angling, and when he is in a position to put something back, he will. I should also add that Ross really didn’t want me to include the above, but I managed to convince him that it was important to do so, despite his claim ‘as far as I’m concerned, it’s not about Ross Honey, it’s about doing something positive for angling’.

Conceptually, Angling Spirit is exactly what it says on the can... it was born through one man’s belief that as an angler he should contribute towards the continued well-being of the sport, and that there exists a certain responsibility as an organiser to ensure that it happens.

For most of us, holding the ethos

of leaving nothing but footprints and taking nothing but photos is perhaps the limit of our personal input back into angling, even though we could very easily do so much more with only the investment of a little time and thought.

With no litter and the rodents that it attracts - thus void of the serious threat of disease that rodents pose to our health - some of the most stunningly beautiful venues would not have been shamefully reduced to eyesores and environmental wastelands.

In the spring of 2010, while sitting in a product development meeting, it was announced that our carp consultant Dave Lane would be leaving the company for pastures new, and it dawned on me that here was my chance to represent JRC in the World Carp Classic.

With some less than subtle arm twisting, it was agreed that I would be one of the UK JRC pair to compete in the event. To say I was pleased was an understatement!

Now up until this moment, the idea of carp fishing competitively had never really been of any interest to me – carp fishing is normally a very solitary and personal obsession – but to put you’re angling skills against some of the best anglers in the world, and fish the mighty Lac Madinne, was a chance I could not let pass. Having spoken to Dave Lane about the event and Madine, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. He had fished it every year the event had taken place and had only caught one double figure carp! It was clear that you needed a good draw and a good plan of action to make the most of what you got.

The event was getting closer and I was pestering everybody I knew to find out as much about Lac Madine as I could. By far my best source of information came from my good friend, and JRC carp category manager, Jan Mertons, who had fished the venue several times for pleasure and at the WCC.

In the 2009 WCC despite not getting a very good draw, he proved what could be done by working hard with good angling skills and the swim you get, and was rewarded with a fantastic mirror carp of 23.6KG (52LB). I had set my sights on just catching one! Catching a fifty would be stuff of dreams.

At this point I still didn’t have a partner for the event, but that soon changed with the arrival of the one and only Olympic gold medal winner, Dean Macey. It was announced he would be my team mate, and we very quickly got together to get

acquainted and make plans. It is always a worry meeting someone

new, let alone having to spend 10 days together, but my worries were misplaced as Dean is one of the most likeable people you could ever wish to meet. His competitive streak could only be an advantage for the event and the fact he is such a tart in front of the cameras would take the heat off me! (the only time I like to be in front of a camera is with a big slimy carp)

With everything in place and the van loaded, it was time to leave for Dover. We were both like children – excited for what lay ahead in the coming days. The whole trip was spent talking tactics and trying not to get lost. Within no time, we arrived at the main entrance to Madine and we could not believe our eyes, it was amazing. The whole drive leading down to the main hall was lined with all the nations flags, as well as giant sponsors banners .. 20 feet high. You could feel the atmosphere and we hadn’t even got

out of the van yet! Over the next two days we really got to

grips with what the event was all about. It was as much about the atmosphere as it was the fishing, with everyone catching up and having a laugh over a few beers.

After registration it was time for the draw in the main hall. As we walked in you could see that this was a world class event with the grand stage stacked with all the prizes. People from all over the world were in the hall waiting for their turn to draw for a swim. This was when the tension started to build. After what seemed forever, it was our turn to draw. We got peg 11 on the main island and we were both very happy with it. After the draw it was a real party atmosphere, with everyone buzzing with the live music and thoughts of the following day.

The next day, we got up early and made our way to the marina to be ferried out to the main island. We were not looking forward to carting all that gear to the boats, but to our surprise there was an army of marshals waiting to help us! These lads are great. Very helpful and without their efforts the event

would not be possible.After a short boat trip, we arrived at what

would be our home on the bank for the next five days. What a setting we would be bivvied up in – a hazelwood on an island in the middle of an inland sea. After a few hours of setting up a week’s worth of gear we were ready and waiting the horn for the start.

When it came, it was like an armada of boats heading out into the lake to bait up and start fishing, it was an incredible sight.

Now started the waiting game, it was all down to the carp .. were they there? Would they feed? Had we put enough bait in, or too much? We waited 24 hours to find out.

Just as it got dark, one of Dean’s rods screamed into life, an absolute one tone belter. If Dean had moved as fast as he did getting to his rod earlier in his career, he would have more Olympic gold medals than you could poke a stick at!

After a good hard fight, the fish was in the net and Dean was already dancing round the swim. We were off the mark. What a first

fish, a stunning mirror weighing over 20 kg. We had already beaten our target of not blanking as a team and got the rods back out, hopefully for another. Again we waited a full 24 hours for the next chance and this time it was my turn.

After a few scary moments trying to land the fish with the H block marker all tangled up with it, it was in the net again. Dean was dancing around the bank. This was another mirror weighing 15+kg. We had both now caught and would have been happy with that, but it was not to be the last fish for me.

In the early hours of the fourth day, my right hand rod peeled off nice and steady (always a good sign of a good fish). I leaned into it and was met with what felt like a very heavy fish. The fight was very slow and powerful. The fish just plodded up and down the marginal shelf. I must admit, I did start to wonder if it was a catfish – any other time I would be happy with one, but not in a world carp match.

The fish was now in the net and we could not believe it! It was a carp, and it was massive. Dean ran to get the marshal to weigh the fish and it bounced the scales round to 25KG (55LB)! It was me dancing around the swim this time!

That was the last fish we caught, but we had both exceeded our expectations and to top it off, we got on the stage at the closing ceremony, as the 25 kg carp I caught won the biggest fish in section

I would like to thank all the competitors for their hospitality during the event. Everyone we spoke to were a pleasure to be around.

This year I have a new team partner Stewart Downing, who is a great friend and has been waiting a long time for his chance to compete. If its half as good as last year he will have a great time.

Also, the Qualifying matches are open to all residents of the host country, which maintains the ethic that the World Carp Classic is inclusive, not exclusive.

In 2011 there were Qualifying matches held in Denmark, South Africa, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Poland, each producing pairs who will now fish in the World Carp Classic here at Madine. As momentum continues to build it is impossible to predict how many, or where with Qualifying events might be held in the future, so you would be well advised to check regularly for any Qualifying matches that might be taking place in your country. All dates and locations will be announced, as and when we receive confirmation, on the official World Carp Classic website.

The only criteria required to participate in a National Qualifying Event is that you have to be a resident in that country. For 2011, all countries were allocated a minimum of three places and this will again be the case for 2012. If for any reason these places are not taken up either by a Qualifying event or Open entry within eight weeks of being made available, they will be reallocated to the country with the highest demand. The places will go to the anglers at the top of the waiting list. The number of places allocated per country has been based on historical participation to date.

Places for the 2012 World Carp Classic will be made available immediately after the 2011 event has been completed. The following countries have national representatives through whom

competitors will need to reserve places; Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Poland, South Africa and Denmark. For all other countries please deal directly with Angling Spirit.

Many of you will have heard that, in June of this year, the World Catfish Classic took place on the river Ebro. The event host town, Chiprana, received the event extremely well and a warm and welcoming time was enjoyed by all. Title Sponsor, Berkley, remain fully committed to the event and The World Catfish Classic will take place again in 2012 on the upper Ebro at Caspe. We feel extremely proud of what has been achieved with the event and also what was achieved by our ‘Friends

of the Ebro’ initiative. We are looking forward to

whatever the next challenge may be, and we will keep moving forward, rising to each test as it presents itself. On that note, over the past few years we have received invitations from the owners of venues around Europe who would like to host the World Carp Classic. All that will be said here and now is, we have carefully considered the proposals and have looked into which venues might be the most suitable.
