  • Susan Thorpe

Question: Why did you choose this apprenticeship and what have been some of the highlights for you so far?

This quarter we would like to highlight a trainee Susan Thorpe. Susan has worked at The Crazy Joker for the last 14 months as a cook in a fully equipped cafe, catering for a large number of people, her very demanding role includes liaising with business partners Shelly and Michelle, ordering and preparing food items for their cafe style menu, and catering for events at the centre .

When asked the question: Why did you choose this traineeship and what have been the highlights for you so far? I chose this traineeship so I could learn new skills and techniques in the kitchen to develop my knowledge as a cook. Then apply this in my daily work role. The best part of my traineeship is the way it is delivered in the workplace and all the new things I have learnt. This ts ideally into my busy life.

In relation to Susans capabilities work skills Trainer Peter Groucott has commented that Susans work is consistently awless, and has shown great commitment in her theory and practical tasks. Peter also commented that he has seen Susan utilise the skills she has learnt and put them to practice in the kitchen.

Question: In your opinion, what has been the impact of training apprentices for your business?

The Crazy Joker Rockhampton has three trainees: Susan Thorpe, Jade Chapman, Jason Nicholson.

The greatest benet of having trainees in our workplace is being able to build on the emphasis of team relationships, these trainees through their hard work and consistency will be rewarded with recognition of their achievements. This process enables us to keep sta and develop their knowledge and skills within the workplace while setting goals for them to achieve .

Michelle Osborne and Rebecca Laver, Owners/Managers of the Crazy Joker said the support that work skills delivers is brilliant, their Trainer is continuously following through to ensure the trainees are on track, identifying any issues, and then working through these problems till they are resolved.

After months of planning, Vicki Adams and I have completed a rather extensive feedback exercise that began with us ying to Mackay from Brisbane. Our aim was to visit with as many Group Training Organisations, Australian Apprenticeship Centres, Skilling Solutions QLD oces, Employers and Industry representatives as possible over the course of a week.

Armed with an itinerary that would see us driving back, stopping at Mackay, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Maryborough and Hervey Bay, we saw at least 60 clients and had many cups of coee on the way.

We met with Australian Apprenticeship Centres including Mission Australia, MEGT, Sarina Russo and Busy at Work. They all gave us valuable feedback on how work skills trainers were progressing with students participating in Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

We also spent time with Group Training Organisations on how best we can all work together to ensure excellent customer service to our clients and working on how to develop business for the future. We saw a number of

Group Training Organisations including Torgas, Wide Bay Apprenticeships, MRAEL, Capricornia Training Company, Migas, and Axial Labour Hire.

Vicki and I met with numerous schools, new employers and job networks introducing ourselves and letting them know all about how we oer one on one, in house training and assessment. We also discussed our new on line induction process as well as our upcoming Learning Management System that we will be rolling out in the New Year starting with Automotive Vehicle Painting. Everyone we met was very forthcoming with their needs and some even gave us a tour of the workplace and facilities. We had many fruitful discussions on how best to t into their business and work together as one team.

We listened to all concerns and gathered constructive feedback on our Road Trip which we will now use in order to improve work skills procedures and learning outcomes. The trip allowed us to achieve maximum customer service and provide a better understanding on how things work in Rural Queensland. Overall, our trainers are doing a fantastic job with training all over Queensland and many more new organisations are excited to be working with us in the New Year.

We would like to thank everyone we met for their time and friendly approach as we not only enjoyed our trip but the opportunity to spend time with you all. We are looking forward to working with you all in the future and to catching up with you all again in the New Year.
