Model Making

Tools:AutoCAD, 123D Make, Rhino, PhotoshopHand-crafted and laser cut models

In this intensive we have covered the basics of AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, 123D Make and learned how to use them as tools for model making. During the course we have analyzed Steven Holl's MIT undergraduate dormitory building Simmons Hall through diagramming and building free-hand, laser-cut and digital concept and study models.

The first assignment for this studio was to analyze an assigned building through model making, sketching and drafting, with the goal to uncover a design's conceptual, spatial and material qualities - and to effec-tively represent these graphically.I have proposed a reading of the Glenn Murcutt Simpson-Lee House as a se-quence of spatial conditions that lead the guest to experience a gradual relief and an increasing sense of solitude within a natural environment.

Design Development

The goal for this project was to develop a cohesive design of a youth hostel and a ferry terminal informed by the analyses of spatial qualities of the site and adjacent area for three client groups: commuters, North End residents and out-of-town visitors, who may walk the Freedom Trail or the Harbor Walk.

"Fountain of Exhaustion" by Pavel Makov "System of Funnels" Concept Model

Funneling of Spaces

During the site analyses I have focused on the "funneling" qualities of the spatial conditions of the site and the adjacent area. I wanted to link my design with a similar logic of opening and narrowing passages-spaces with an emphasis on preserving as much of the existing park space as possible, enhancing existing and introducing new views.

Page 10: Work sample portfolio ivan grekov

10

A necessary step in my process was construct-ing a site model with my design interventions measured out and planted to see how the overall design fit together in the context of the immedi-ate surroundings.

Site Model General Massing and Layout

Page 11: Work sample portfolio ivan grekov

11

The proposed design for the ferry terminal connected the existing waterfront platform with the Harbor Walk giving better access to the waterfront. The space between the ticket booth and the waiting area holds a turnstile threshold. The overhanging roofs create tunnel like spaces where the "funneling" effect takes place. The waiting area has three large wall-to-wall windows to allow the people waiting to take advantage of the opening views.

Additionally to the assigned program I have planned a walkway connecting Commercial Street to the waterfront in a space between the tennis courts and Charlestown Bridge. This was a result of a dense foot traffic concentration on the corner of the site and the fact that the proposed space was not functioning to the sites benefit.

Walkway

Page 13: Work sample portfolio ivan grekov

13

I started with sketching out perspectival views of the walkway in an attempt to capture the users experience and to test out my idea. Not only have I found that the idea was working, I also discovered ample room along the walk for additional public spaces. This lead me to add two platforms, one elevated and connected to the sidewalk along the bridge, allowing for a panoramic view of the site and courts; and one near the waterfront giving visi-tors a more private and relaxing area with benches along its perimeter. The "funneling" occurs here as one either ascends or descends (narrow part of the funnel) to these platforms (widening part of the funnel)

The third and last intervention was the Youth Hostel. Through an iterative process of making models, sketching and drafting I have come up with a model that would give the guests equal commodities while following my strategy of preserving the existing "funneling" conditions. The first floor of the hostel would hold the reception desk and common area. It would have large glass wall-to-wall windows to give a it sense of transpar-ency. The elevated rooms would be facing the river and giving the guests a panoramic view of the river and park. Each of the nine rooms would house four guests and have access to balconies flowing along its facade.

The "funneling" occurs in this design in the men-tioned before "transparent" first floor, the views from the rooms and the connecting flights of stairs located in the side of the building facing Commercial street. The walls of that side are also covered with bay windows allowing the building to feel "lighter".

"Located at the intersection of the Roxbury and Dorchester neighborhoods in Boston, Grove Hall has a strong cultural and agricultural legacy, unique architecture, as well as a long history of civil rights activism. Presently, many organizations located around the community, in addition to support from the locals and outside research-ers are working together to help make Grove Hall a more resilient, inclusive community as well as improve on the local economy and create a healthier environment. For our Gateway project, we are build-ing off this and designing a S.T.E.A.M. school which will help with providing affordable educational opportunities as well em-powering the community by keeping it active and engaged."/Excerpt from our final board

For this project I have worked as an intern with Earthos institute to brainstorm programming ideas for a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) school in Roxbury which was to be combined with co-working spaces, daycare and a bioregional urbanism and urban agriculture center.

My contribution to this project was designing a prototype for renovating a house located at 140 Thorton Street, Roxbury, MA. The client was looking to upgrade the existing building to a self sustaining net-zero house for low income families and splitting it into two apartments. In my proposal I have changed the slope of the roof for maximum solar energy harvesting, laid out floor plans to maximize bedrooms per apartment and designed an addition that included a private balcony/porch and master bedroom for each apartment and a connecting stairwell. In this design, I have attempted to keep as much of the existing walls as possible, adapted the basement for living and thickened exterior walls for better insulation.
