FLUID MOTIONURBAN FOOD MARKET & SOCIAL HUBThe objective of this project is to develop an urban food market and social hub in conjunction with the Atlanta beltline – an urban renewal program of pedestrian paths and parks designed to connect neighborhoods surrounding the city core. Strategically, the design acts as a fluid continuation of the beltline through a multi-level open market space. The main plaza also connects with an adjacent parking lot, creating a new access point to the beltline. The idea of fluidity and movement on the beltline, along with site relationships, inspired the dynamic form language. An iconic hyper-parabolic roof structure creates a highly visible landmark. Two enclosures support the large-span roof and house restaurants, public education facilities and administrative offices. These interior spaces offer year-round activity and purpose for the design.

Page 6: Ivan Huber | Portfolio 2014

PARTI SKETCHThe essence of the project is to treat the food market as a fluid continuation of the beltline supported through circulation and aesthetic intent.

The objective of this project is to design a living/working retreat for two clients – a deep ecologist and a surrealist painter. The retreat intends to reflect their personal interests architecturally. The site plan allows for farming and gardening along with an architecture that is unified with the landscape. The program includes a dwelling space of about 800 sq. ft. including spaces for living, working, food preparation, sleeping and bathing.

LIVING WALL CONCEPTThe design concept features a large “living” wall that divides the site into “cultivated” and “natural” space. The wall is made of concrete with intentional voids that promote plant growth on the structure. The living wall form gestures at a familiar Appalachian vernacular while the dwelling space is simple with emphasis on craftsmanship.

HOLD TIMEA VESSEL FOR WATER AND LIGHTThe vessel for water and light is intended to be a destination for meditation and reflection. The architecture is meant to facilitate reflection on the surrounding natural environment and the user’s place within that environment. Water is used to define spatial volumes, act as a reflecting surface, and be an active element of the design as water flows through the structure integrating pieces to the whole.

Materials are also an important part of experiencing the space. Concrete and stone are used throughout the structure, indicating its permanance within the site. Copper is used as a reflecting surface and for its unique patina properties and reaction to water and weather over time.

Page 25: Ivan Huber | Portfolio 2014
Page 26: Ivan Huber | Portfolio 2014

INSPIRATIONThe essence of the design is to act as a vessel for the dynamic power of a mountain stream. The architecture intends to reflect the permanence of the surrounding site and have a feeling of history, memory and belonging.

CHELSEA KUNSTHALNEW YORK HIGH LINE ART MUSEUMThe objective of this project is to develop an art museum, or kunsthal, in conjunction with the New York High Line park. The site is adjacent to the High Line and the museum acts as a new access point for the High Line. The program includes galleries, administrative offices, a museum store, cafe, auditorium and outdoor spaces within a 60,000 sq. ft. plan. The design centers around the historic context of the site and the natural elements of the Chelsea neighborhood in the midst of a highly urbanized landscape.

Page 30: Ivan Huber | Portfolio 2014

PARTI SKETCHThe essence of the project is to bring awareness to the historic site and the natural environment amidst a highly urbanized context. The parti sketch represents the natural elements of water, earth and air in an architectural composition.

TOUCHING THE VOIDARCHITECTURAL VISUALIZATION EXERCISEThe objective of this project is to design, visualize and digitally fabricate a structure based on a simple cartesian volume intersected with a highly organic void shape. The initial concept went through design development -- applying a structural design, designing a “skin” treatment, sectioning the CAD model to explore tectonics, and finally a 1/4”=1.0’ scale digitally fabricated model. The design was also rendered to create a compelling visual representation of the architecture.

Page 40: Ivan Huber | Portfolio 2014

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENTThe design started with a simple cartesian box intersected by organic shapes. These shapes were substracted to create dynamic voids. Next, a structural system, floor plates, a roof plane and diagrid curtain wall system were added.

40

Page 41: Ivan Huber | Portfolio 2014

41

Page 42: Ivan Huber | Portfolio 2014

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENTThe model was sectioned into a managable size for digital fabrication. A “skin”/facade system was applied as well as a diagrid system for glazing the voids. Finally the CAD model was translated into components and systems for digital fabrication.

HAIKU HOUSEAFFORDABLE HOUSING PROTOTYPEHaiku is a housing concept focused on affordability, minimal environmental impact, and a modular construction allowing for future relocation.

The proposal is structurally modular: each of fifteen wall panels and three roof panels would be built off-site using advanced framing timber construction and bolted connections allowing for truck delivery and installation on the site. The house is cladded with a rain screen of cement fiberboard panels and cedar furring strips. The structure also features a pin foundation that is minimally invasive to the site and allows for future relocation.

Energy efficiency is gained through site location and orientation taking advantage of passive heating and cooling as well as cross-ventilation. The butterfly roof design is intended to aid in rainwater collection. A cistern may be implemented to collect gray water for gardening and other activities. The pin foundation allows for minimal disturbance of the natural ground and topsoil. This detail is also important for future relocation of the home.

7 SITE DEVELOPMENTThe unique site is occupied by several existing structures - a church, fellowship hall, and pastorate. The client is a youth pastor who frequently entertains guests from the church. The concept offers clear delineation between private and public occupancy for such occasions. The house is also set on the back of the site near the tree line offering a retreat from nearby commercial zones, better connecting the home with the Nicholtown neighborhood.
