Computer
6th Grade Computer
Applications
Sixth graders began their Information Literacy unit, also
known as Internet Research. We teach students to use the strategy FSER when finding information online. Focus, Strategize, Evaluate and Use Responsibly. Each step is important in order to find good quality information, especially when we know that not everything online is reliable. Focusing is choosing a very specific topic and deciding
what strong keywords will be. Strategizing is deciding what tool to use to find the information. We can choose between search engines such as Google or Bing, and subscription databases such as BadgerLink. Evaluating your results means we evaluate whether or not the source is credible. We look for a reputable author, the date the information was created and updated, and whether or not the information matches what
we already know or what we've read on other websites. Using
responsibly means we record the information in our own words and cite the source.

World Studies
5th Grade World Studies
Fifth graders are currently in the Hmong unit and are busy learning about the story of the Hmong people, the challenges they have faced, and their journey to the United States. A large focus during this unit is the topic of immigration, the difference between being an immigrant and a refugee, and the difficulties immigrants and refugees face when relocating to a new home.
Fifth graders are looking forward to their field trip on April 25th to the PAC to view the performance titled, “In To America.” This performance will discuss the history of immigration to the United States and will strongly support the conversations we are having in World Studies. Be sure to ask your child what they thought of the performance!

CHOIR INFORMATION:
“Choir Rehearsals”
The final performance will be a trip to Sunrise to sing for the students there on April 30th, during the morning. We will return just in time for recess. Please look for a permission slip for this trip to come home and return it promptly.
We will have an ice cream party on Thursday, May 2nd during lunch and recess to celebrate the year. Students are welcome to bring an unopened topping, no nuts please, labeled with their name to contribute to the party.
Healthy Living 6
th Grade
Eating well can have a positive effect on
physical, mental and social health. With the
introduction of our nutrition unit, maybe,
hopefully, you’ve noticed an increased interest
in the food labels of the items you bring home.
It is not just that the food items we eat (i.e.
goldfish crackers) may contain ingredients that
negatively affect our bodies, but they also may
not contain the vitamins, minerals, protein and
fiber that our bodies need to function at their
best levels. Sometimes, when we fill up on
those less beneficial food items, we don’t leave
room for foods that our bodies need. Any help
you can offer at home (sending fruits and
vegetables for snack) would reinforce this
message. I have reminded your children that
my job is to teach them how and why they
should choose to eat healthy. Their job is to
make those healthy choices. The emphasis in
this unit is on eating the “healthy plate” and
getting the “essential nutrients” in their foods in
order to positively impact their physical, mental
and social health.
Nutrition is one component of our physical
health that impacts social and mental health,
but, the other important piece is activity.
Activity has so many positive impacts including
improving lung and heart function, improving
the immune system, and releasing those “feel
good” endorphins. Like reading for 30 minutes
each day helps students become better readers,
30-60 minutes of activity each day will make
for healthier students.
Thanks for your support.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns,
please contact me.

5th Grade Art
The 5th grade students will be creating a sculpture made of plaster gauze. The students will learn how to plaster their hands and fingers with plaster gauze, and design a sculpture from their hand and fingers. The students also will design a base (made from cardboard) for the sculpture to sit on. This base will create a mood that will bring the fingers and hands to life. The 5th grade students will use paint, hot glue, feathers, beads, sequins, leather and other materials to help make their sculpture unique! When the students are all finished with their plaster project they will fill out a name tag. After they are finished with their name tag they will use their chrome book to fill out their check off sheet (self- assessment) on our Google classroom. The plaster projects will be displayed in the display cases when they are finished.
The Elements of art we have covered are: Color, Value, Form, Line, Shape and Texture.

6th grade has begun to
learn about the elements of
music, learning what to

historically important
composers. We will also
draw comparisons to
popular music.

ACP update - Sixth graders will be participating in their final ACP iChat of their sixth grade year. During this iChat students will talk about the career cluster they chose to research about
during their research unit in Computer Applications class. We will look at ways that they can explore career clusters of interest during the summer and while in middle school. Our goal is to help students to explore career clusters and to understand the importance of knowing their skills, interests, and personality when beginning to consider what could be good fit career options for themselves. During their middle school years students will begin to connect their knowledge of who they are and their knowledge of career clusters to help them rank their interests as they prepare for course selections in high school. Academic and Career Planning is a process that we encourage our students and parents to think and talk about throughout each student’s educational journey.
Save the Date: New Student Orientation at JRG

FAMILY RESOURCE INFORMATION/
OPPORTUNITIES TO DONATE
You may or may not be aware that the Kimberly Area School
District has two clothes closets that are located in two of our
schools. One of the clothes closets is at Mapleview
Intermediate (920-788-7910) and the other is at Westside
Elementary (920-739-3578). If you would like to donate or are
in need of some assistance with resources, you can contact
Mapleview or Westside. In addition to the clothes, Woodland is
frequently being offered ways to support our families if they
should fall upon economic hardship. Please reach out to your
child’s teacher or school counselor if you are in need of any
assistance throughout the year.
When to Keep Your Child Home
Children should be kept home from school when they don’t feel well. It is important to get the rest they need to
recover, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and the staff. If you are unsure of when to keep your
child home, please contact the school nurse or your family medical provider.
The following symptoms may suggest a communicable disease. Children who have the following symptoms should
be kept home from school until a doctor has seen them, they no longer have symptoms indicating a communicable
disease or they have received treatment for at least 24 hours for certain diseases.
SORE THROAT
An oral temperature of 100.4 or higher indicates a fever. If your child has a temp of 100.4 or higher at school he/she will be sent home. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.
If a fever is accompanied by a sore throat, stomach ache or head ache it may be strep throat. Strep throat is diagnosed by a throat culture obtained at a medical clinic. If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, your child must be on appropriate antibiotics for 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.
If your child has an episode of vomiting and diarrhea at school, he/she will be sent home. Anyone with these symptoms should stay home until symptoms are absent for 24 hours.
A cough may be a sign of many different illnesses. If a cough is accompanied by a fever, sore throat, body aches or any other symptoms you should keep your child home. Any cough that lasts for more than several days should be discussed with a doctor.
Rashes and infected sores needed to be diagnosed by a medical provider. Many skin rashes such as impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, Fifth disease or Hand Foot and Mouth disease are very contagious. Students may return to school once the rash has been diagnosed and treated for 24 hours or cleared by a doctor. Open sores from illnesses such as chicken pox and impetigo may need to be covered at school with bandages for several days.
Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation is usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school that can safely provide.
