    WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

    Chivalry Code for

Women What is it that makes eventhe youngest of knights protect alady to the end? Ladies of the courthave been taking for granted therespect that is shown to them bythese knights and Noblemen.Chivalry is a Code for women. Noble ladies are put up on apedestal as pure and virtuousfollowing the example of the great

virgin mother. With such animpossible task set for us there iscomfort in the knowledge that wewill forever be protected by men.Through all the terrible wars andillnesses it is nice to know that youwill forever command the respectand protection because of the codefor women.

Marriage or Love There have been somewhispers in the shadows about the

concept of love before duty. That itis more honorable to marry for lovethen for your honor. Well I feel thatit is my job to stop this insanenotion right here. Marriage isarranged for the good of the familyand the girl. The dowry is animportant part of our world. IfGods will is that you should lovethen it will come after marriage.

Girls you must have faith inyour family and believe that theyhave your best interests at heart. They will make a match that willnot only benefit you but the wholefamily. This is the true meaning ofmarriage not love helping yourfamily and ensuring your ownfuture.

The latest trends infashion and jewelry have been

    portrayed by the noble women

    throughout the land. Since

    peasants have little money to

    spend on clothing their trends

    are of no importance. They

wear long ugly gowns that do

    not reflect the latest trends.

    Instead for clothing advice

look to the royals or nobles ofthe land. Their fur-lined

    garments and long wide

    gowns with embroidery on the

    edges are beautiful. Their

    fitted tunics and hose reflect

their personal style as well as

    social class. Royals are the

    only ones allowed to wear

    purple or gold silk. During

    these times of the crusades

    more and more fine silks,

    satins, damasks, brocades,

    velvets and broaches are being

brought to our land. We hoard

    the viciously but for good

reason. The more jewels andsatin you wear the higher you

are on the social ladder. The

    form fitting shape with tight

    lacing and corsets are also

    popular currently and

although it makes it hard to

    breathe it gives you a

    wonderful shape that the men

    love. The pointed headdress

    and double horn is also

    currently in fashion with

    different type and size veils

    depending on the woman.

    Shoes, although sometimes

    uncomfortable were pointed

with exaggerated toes. Leatherstudded belts show signs of

    money as well as gloves.

Broaches and rings were also a

sign of royalty or high upper

    class.

    To the scribe of this

    magazine,

As the wife of a noble

lord I have many duties that I

    am responsible for for my

    daily duties. As my daily

    routine I begin by attending

    mass at dawn with our

    morning prayers. Then my

ladies in waiting serve me and

pick out my outfit. I dress and

    eat breakfast in the main

    dining hall. The we discuss

    tournaments, betrothals,marriages, poetry and courtly

    love. Then throughout the

day I oversee the education of

    young girls that have been

sent to my household to learn

    manners and get a good

    education. Sometimes when

my husband is away I look

    over the finances and collect

    the rent, as well as

    supervising the farming and

    settling disputes. After these

    discussions I have a

    midmorning meal and

prayers. Then I attend to my

    housewifely duties supervising

    the meals and stores. After

my regular duties I sometimeshave leisure time for dancing

    practice and embroidery. I

have an evening prayer with a

    nighttime meal and then

    entertainment, including

    music, dancing, juggling,

    acrobatics, and jesters. Before

    bed I have final nighttime

    prayers and my day is

    through. I begin this over

again the next day, as routine

    is very important to our

    society. This routine,

    although proper and

    important is tiresome and I

    wish for more activity within

    my daily routine. Please help

    me.Signed most graciously,

    Elizabeth Beaton of

    Yorkshire

Dearest Ladies of theCourt, I will not disclosemy name for the sake ofprivacy especially sincewhat I am about toimpart to you is ratherpersonal. I amapproaching myseventeenth year and amstill working on the smalllot of land designated tomy father. The problem

that plagues at my mindis I am lacking in suitorsand I fear that I willbecome an old maid. Awoman of my age shouldbe married and runningher own household. I

know my place as adaughter of Eve this iswhy I work hard and

long. I am up at thecrack of dawn, sometimes earlier in thesummers to get to work.I spend my day dutifullypreparing the food, washing, working out inthe fields, making thepreserves, and lookingafter the other children

and animals. The workin the fields ends at dusk.In order to make moremoney I sell cheese andmilk as well as doing oddjobs. Yet I am without ahusband.

Most of the girls my ageare with child or theirsecond or even third, but

I fear that I will becomean old spinster alone andbitter. My father is happyfor my help but angers atthe extra mouth to feed.I have begun to considerjoining the GilbertineOrder, one of the fewconvents that acceptmere peasants. In truth I

owe God for he sent mea traveling nun who wasliterate and taught mewhen I was little. Tell meladies of The Courtwhat should I do?
